_Kerslake Hall G r a d u a t i n g P r o j e c t [ 2 0 1 2 ] The design intent for this tradi tional residence hal l was to create social opportuni ties and interaction amongst residents, to build a communi ty. Transform and flexibili ty are the key design concepts; by designing elements and spaces wi th flexible and transforming quali ties al lows the resident greater variety of choice and personal control while residing in such a ‘public’ living environment. Choice in al ternate social, study and sleeping environments, and greater personal control in obtaining the desired level of privacy and social interaction wi th other residents.

Due to the increasing number of female enrolments at universi ty, an investigation of current student accommodation facili ties is required. Are residence hal ls, in general, addressing current ‘social satisfaction’ needs; the desired level of privacy and social in teraction?

A resul t from the design proposal testing of an existing layout provided evidence that the design layout can in fact affect social satisfaction. This indicates that i t ’s not the residence hal l style (as a whole) that affects social satisfaction but the design layouts of the individual spaces.

A survey was conducted on al l residents in three di fferent styles - uni t-style, corridor-style and tradi tional hal l resul ting in a discovery of some distinct di fferences in gender, and issues addressed by women in the public spaces. These areas were further investigated through a series of speculative design proposals of di fferent terri torial gradients of personal control, to identi fy key design att ribute s which could improve social satisfaction.

Ro bert O’Co nno r ’s artwo rk
_RoC Art Hotel 3 r d Ye a r P r o j e c t [ 2 0 1 1 ] The brief was to redesign an existing hotel into an art hotel using a local artist. Tasmanian artist, Robert O’Connor, has a fresh, bold and slightly controversial style. There is a comical element in his work that removes the seriousness from the classical depictions, and through mul tiple layers of en cryptions, modi fies i t int o the 21st Century. The core concept for this hotel is the experience. B y playing wi th the mind’s perception i t stimula tes curiosi ty and exploration. These ideas are reflected through a play on sc ale, depth perception, and material use.

Guests were encouraged to participate in creative making activi ties which cul tivated new li fe to the spaces through the night. The pop-up event was made entirely from biodegradable, recycled and reused materials.

This group project was a col laboration of the Interior Design Honours students who celebrated World Interiors Day and i ts theme, ‘Find the new in the old’. The theme was interpreted in the form of a li fe cycle through birth, death and re-creation; using the inspiration of the autumn leafs, seasonal change and transi tional period.

_Greenthumbs Kitchen 2 n d Ye a r P r o j e c t [ 2 0 1 0 ] The brief was to design a restaurant along the Tamar River, Launceston, Tasmania, for renowned cook Stephanie Alexander. Alexander ’s philosophy in cooking was interpreted as ‘the link between the garden, ki tchen and table’. Wi th this in mind my design intent wa s connection, and the cycle of li fe and death. Polar opposi tes and interconnection formed spaces and elements wi th metaphoric symbology. These analogies were also translated through forms of di fferent eating experiences, intimate and secluded, open and lively, as wel l as seasonal and time of day.
