CENTRAL CORE
the area that provides the most comfort to the residents/ patients with acrophobia. contains the main vertical circulation for the entire building and resident apartments for patients with the more extreme cases of acrophobia.
OUTER CORE
the area the provides comfort but also encourages the patients to slowly face their acrophobia. majority of the therapy offices, group meeting rooms, and training facilities are located within the outer core.
EDGE CONDITION
the area that provides the least comfort for the residents/patients. this is the area of the program that challenges the patients to conquer their acrophobia by providing direct access to an edge condition and exposing the patients to the height of the building.

OTR BREWERY DISTRICT SUMMER 2015
A BRANDED ENVIRONMENT GOAL design and define a district brand using environmental graphics and placemaking for the Cincinnati Brewery District located within historic Over-the-Rhine. SITE Over-the-Rhine north of East Liberty Street and south of McMicken Avenue, Cincinnati, OH CONCEPT “authentic.” as a group we wanted to capitalize on the history and rich character of the area, keeping all of its current charm while bringing a sense of place to the entire area through beer gardens, banners, murals, and other district markers. COLLABORATORS Kyle Bennett, ElAsa Crawford, Karen Hatfield, Jessica Ping CONTRIBUTION as a group we developed our concept through numerous brainstorming and benchmarking exercises. specifically focused on the beer gardens, street placemaking, and the slogans and copy. BRANDING & LOGO
when it came to branding and the major logo, we went for a “historic with a modern twist” aesthetic, playing to the re-emerging breweries and maker spaces inhabiting the historic buildings. therefore, a strong sans serif leads the branding with a secondary slab serif, providing a slight historic vibe.

STREET SIGNS & BANNERS
the street signs and banners became “markers” through out the project, small visual reminders for patrons to reflect on their location within the city. the street sign toppers would sit above the local street signs within the district and the banners would dawn the telephone poles and street lights.

DISTRICT
ICONS
hops, barley, and gears are the three icons that populate the street signs, banners and branding. hops and barley clearly calling to the districts name and brewing history and the gears referencing the new maker spaces and industrial heritage of the area. COPY
the copy and slogans were written to provoke a sense of nostalgia and pride. referencing to the area as “home” and well built over a long and bumpy history, letting the world know that Cincinnati’s brewing and industrial district has not been forgotten [the buildings, companies, or the people]. MURALS & TAGGING
murals and tags already populate the area, some historic signage and some unwanted graffiti. however, both supply character and landmarks to the area. we used murals and tags as a placemaking and marker tool throughout the district.

CASA DA MÚSICA FALL 2014
A THEORETICAL EXPLORATION GOAL theoretically dissect design concepts and architectural intent of Casa da Música [by Rem Koolhaas and OMA] in Porto, Portugal to gain a deeper understanding of the buildings concept and construction process. CONCEPT breaking down the Casa da Música into a simplified form to showcase the major program solely as a function, but not form. reveal the concept of a box within a form within a box. COLLABORATORS Ghislaine Garcia, Emmanuel Manolukas, Giovanna Lang, Connor Hymes, Diego Macias CONTRIBUTION research was done individually, then brought together and compiled. concept for model series was conceived over the course of several group meetings, and then refined. each person participated in the construction of each piece of the model. specifically focused on the architectural intent and the facilitated relationship between function, construction, materials, structure, and the desired aesthetic presentation. also complied and edited the process publication PUBLICATION http://issuu.com/erinmkline/docs/theory_book_single

OMA’S ARCHITECTURAL INTENT
re-address the relationship between the hollowed interior concert hall and the public outside. the building reveals its content to the city without being didactic; at the same time the city is exposed to the patrons inside in a way that has never happened before. FORM VS. FUNCTION
the main idea was to have the concert hall as the most acoustically perfect shape; a rectangle. however, Rem Koolhaas did not want the “shoe box” to be the main drive for the aesthetic form. thus, he took a solid orthogonal mass from which he then carved out a “gem-like” form. this form houses the “shoe box” auditorium in the heart of the structure and all other program revolves around it. THEORETICAL INTENT
after studying Koolhaas’ architectural intent and relating it to the theory of deconstructivism, the team began to discuss a deconstructed model to represent the non-orthogonal form and the very orthogonal program. the goal was to show the strong “carved” building mass in comparison with needed and desired shape of the auditorium. MODEL CONCEPT
the concept of the model series is the idea of the Russian doll [one form that fits into another inside another]. the first part showing the “block of stone” where the carved form came from. the second piece is the carved form with key programmatic element removed from the mass, and the third is the rectangular auditorium. all three parts can collapse into one another revealing the original program form.

PRAIRIE SANCTUARY SUMMER 2015
A MetroLAB DESIGN STUDIO GOAL design and build a self sustained tiny house for the grounds keeper of the Kamama Prairie. SITE Kamama Prairie in rural Adams County, OH CONCEPT simple construction and small foot print that melds into the landscape. the concept started with using a re-purposed shipping container for convenient transportation to the site, and was later built upon by using reclaimed materials from the site. COLLABORATORS Michael McInturf’s 2015 summer semester studio [15 students] CONTRIBUTION took on a leadership and organization role. focused on the bathroom inside the shipping container, the millwork and kitchen area, and the millwork connection details.

ZY1: ZIDELL BLOCK SPRING 2015
SELECTED WORK FROM INTERNSHIP AT ZGF ARCHITECTS GOAL design the counter-part to the existing Emery Apartments along SW Moody Avenue with a retail/mixed-use and residential program that will serve the South Waterfront District and OHSU. the secondary goal was to create a transportation hub by capitalizing on the four means of public transportation within a five minute walking radius. SITE SW Moody Avenue and Gibbs Street in South Waterfront District of Portland, OR CONCEPT the design concept of ZY1 is carried from the Emery Apartments: the rapids and oxbows of the Willamette River. CONTRIBUTION concentrated on the massing of the residential tower and its relation to the Emery Apartments. worked on building elevations and plans. completed the client presentation renderings and Design Review diagrams.

PLANE VS. WRAPPER
throughout the project there was a discussion about how the bars of ZY1 were to be perceived in plan and perspective. as the discussion grew, it was apparent that the language needed to be similar to the Emery Apartments. it was crucial to diagram the Emery, which had one “wrapper” that skinned the back bar of the building and a single planar corten steel wall. taking this language to the bars of ZY1, the back bar became the “wrapper,” and the two front bars took on the single “plane” aesthetic. this allowed the two buildings to read as a pair between two strong linear landmarks.

the tech office is placed in the center of UCHS campus. new cross through roads are being proposed for better car and pedestrian access. the initial concept is mass versus void. then the stacked program of an office begins to manipulate mass, and finally the amenities create pockets to break the massing of the office program.
