Erin Neises
interior designer
Erin Neises is a veteran at building relationships with clients as well as building things with her two own hands. Erin is a 2019 IIDA WI First Place winner for her innovative kitchen design. She spends significant time doing recon on her client to know them intricately. From there she gets inspiration to bring to life designs beyond her client’s dreams. The majority of her inspiration derives from traveling to ancient European cities, having lived in the Mediterranean culture, and the influence of mother nature. Having worked in the industry for over 3 years gaining commercial design experience as well as residential. Her long term goal includes building custom homes and bringing to life architectural details & design. There is nothing “plain Jane” about this designer. Erin currently resides in Madison in her newly remodeled modern farmhouse, enjoying biking through the hills and trees whether on her mountain bike or hybrid, and running through the Arboretum. 4

ENTRANCE
- Match existing bathroom color scheme, the timeless black and white, to the kitchen.
- Maintain the original character of the house in the newly remodeled kitchen for continuity.
- Add mudroom, i.e. bench, wall hooks for coats/ backpacks, and shoe area.
- A new main entrance into the kitchen requiring window removal.

1938 Farmhouse The Spicer’s dreamed their kitchen remodel would reflect its original era with a modern update. Their home charms with classic sectioned off rooms, large windows with mullions, tall ceilings, hardwood floors, two stories, thick dark wood trim and molding, and a brick exterior. They requested their newly designed kitchen to accommodate entertaining, increased storage options, and functionality with the materials and finishes.

42” clearance off the cabinets determined the island size to be 60”L x 25”W. A butcher block island countertop makes the space functional as well a central location for entertaining. EAST VIEW
11
SOUTH VIEW Recessed wood cabinet built-ins play off the old house style with the hutch-like appearance from countertop to ceiling, which increases storage as well as a touch of character.
New exterior door (far right) created space for the mudroom, which consists of a two-seat bench with drawers, a space for footwear, and hooks on the wall for coats, bags, etc.

Education facility
Mount Rainer Technical College is a fictious leading-edge higher education institution located in Seattle, WA. Their administration team had a vision to increase their reach to a large urban population. Dedicated to helping students reach their goals and create an evolving paradigm of learning, they developed a smallscale building in the north end of Seattle in a suburb called Shoreline. This project consists of two floors and serves many purposes; including a place for online students to gather, a place where adult students with small children have a daycare option, and a place for workforce individuals to obtain additional knowledge and skills.

LEARNING COMMONS – SOUTHEST VIEW
The learning commons offer both lounge and task seating for individual & group work as they take into consideration the user’s well-being. There are live walls and plants in every space as every human has an innate need to connect with life/ nature. The focus is to bring living plants, daylight, natural materials, organic patterns, etc. into spaces to support experiences & are known to reduce stress. The neutral color palette plays off the existing aged concrete walls and is replicated through the neutral carpet color. Color cohesion on both floors keep the spaces unified, soft, relaxing, and airy.

-
DRIVER: Provide learning spaces that adapt to a variety of teaching methods.
-
SOLUTION: Throughout the 10th and 11th floor there are a variety of learning spaces that offer the following; both private and public space layouts, which include group and private work areas, high and low tables, mobile furniture on casters, nesting tables to re-arrange learning spaces, adaptable technology in classroom settings, natural light via windows, biophilia, & acoustical ceiling properties to decrease noise and increase productivity.
PUBLIC & PRIVATE SPACES
2
- DRIVER: Balance public and private spaces where students can work alone or with others, whether inside or outside the classroom. - SOLUTION: There are numerous public and private spaces outside classrooms throughout the learning commons, in-between spaces, open tutoring, and faculty hub. Theses spaces are equipped with high and low table tops, glass walls to write on or white boards, mobile white boards, and furniture on casters for easy movement. There are 10 private/individual work surfaces or areas that people can choose from, and 11 public/ group work surfaces between both floors. This offers students multiple settings on both floors to work with others or alone outside of the classroom.

POSTURES - DRIVER: Provide multiple postures so users can sit, stand, lounge or walk throughout the space. - SOLUTION: The in-between spaces and learning commons are two great areas that offer both lounge and task seating for individual and group work. There are sectionals on both floors for people to relax out on and plenty of tables for task oriented work to be done as well as lounge seating to sit back and read or chat with a friend. There is also a variation is table heights from high to low to also add variation and needs of multiple postures for students.

120 year old farmhouse The Beck’s moved into their 1800 sf house 19 years ago. Three kids later plus numerous animals they have completely outgrown their house, which means time for an addition. This project includes new floor plans for the first and second floors. The main focus is the added great room, which is designed to drastically increase space, to keep the family centered, and include work surfaces for homework and leisure activities.

A second staircase added to the addition reaches the upstairs, which opens down into the kitchen & dining room. Walnut wood newel posts with black metal wire horizontal balusters frame the staircase while white painted shiplap runs through the entire space to give the farmhouse look. EAST VIEW
An additional 595 sf to the rear portion of the house accommodates a new kitchen and great room. Flanked on the fireplace are two arched topped shelf built-ins. The coffered ceiling uses rustic wooden beams with white narrow shiplap between the them. SOUTH EAST VIEW
45
Built-in desks increase work surfaces, include additional tall storage towers for the kids to put their school work and craft supplies. These are located on the back side of the family room which gives the family an open concept with space for them to work & play.
NORTHEAST VIEW
A drop down tv screen and in-ceiling projector (not shown) keep the family room feeling open & hide the electronics the majority of time. This keeps the family focused on family bonding.
