Second-year BA (Hons) Furniture and Product Design Student at Nottingham Trent University . Every project begins with my analytical and diagnostic thinking. I am a problem solver that thrives on a challenge and enjoy finding solutions. As a visionary and imaginative designer, my favourite element of the design process is ideation. I love having visions and starting to bring them to life through sketches, models and CAD. When I am working on a project, I lay everything out around the space. It makes for an immersive experience and I feel involved and intertwined within my project.

I am conscious of the current global sustainability issues. Our future depends on the responsibility designers have now. A good design exists as a positive, innovative contribution, with a purpose, aligned with the values of the Charles Eames (2015). I aim to source materials and manufacture in the UK and gather meaningful user feedback to ensure consumer satisfaction. I am a sympathetic designer as I want to reduce harm and manipulation in design. A bad design, to me is unimaginative and wasteful. The work of Fabian Oefner fascinates me. I share his curiosity and analytical thinking. Oefner (2013) said “there's an enjoyment in the analysis, discovering something by taking it apart, like peeling an onion."

Inspired by 80’s wine racks, I designed a frame and manufactured a prototype in the workshop.

The individual project enabled me to develop my analytical skills to design a product based around a common problem that surfaced in the Covid-19 pandemic. The flexibility enabled me to exercise my problem-solving skills. I developed a hallway storage solution to encapsulate commonly misplaced items like masks and hand sanitiser. Pint Place, shown in figure 16, re-purposes old pint glasses as pigeonhole shelves, encapsulated in a wooden rack frame. Inspired by the classic, timeless shape of 80’s wooden wine racks that evokes a sense of nostalgia. Inspired by the morals of Tord Boontje (1998), Pint Place “is made available through free drawings with building instructions, much like a DIY kit […] Constructions are basic, this makes it possible for everyone to build their own”. Making the design a free open source was an obvious decision for me. Design can be quite inaccessible, and I believe it should be something everyone can enjoy. My research into this project made me a more sympathetic designer as I put myself into the position of the user. The idea for re-purposing the glasses came from my experiences and my understanding of human nature. If a container is durable, we want to reuse it. For example, we all have a mum or grandma that re-purposed a biscuit tin into a sewing tin. This observation enabled me to design a product that can be made by ordinary people to evoke a sense of pride, with a rough homemade quality. This project influenced me to observe human behaviour. I am a big believer that there are ideas waiting to happen in difficulties people face daily. There are endless opportunities for improvement. The values this project has taught me will make me a more sensitive designer.

From researching John Lewis, I discovered that they were committed to “significantly reducing” their environmental impact (Anon., 2019-2020). Working on this brand project was an amazing opportunity for me as I share this value. My Evolution chair in figure 5 gave me the opportunity to educate parents, through design, on the harmful impact consistently replacing items and “built in obsolescence” has on the environment (The Lightbulb conspiracy, 2011), which is a passion of mine. This project enlightened me about sustainability and waste and my responsibility as a designer. It is impossible to create design and be completely sustainable because putting a product out into the world inevitably uses up energy and we have no control over the way the user treats its end of life. Like (Chouinard, 2009) I believe “there's no such thing as sustainability. There are just levels of it. It's a process, not a real goal. All you can do is work toward it.”

I was Inspired by the principals of Maartje Steenkamp’s height adaptable high-chair as seen in figure 24. With a new understanding of user sensitivity from the previous project, I made sure that the Evolution chair followed the “European standard EN1972” for chair heights. Inspired by the “Bright, multi-coloured objects with a rejection of typical shapes” (Barnes, 2018) of the Memphis movement and the glass and ceramic wear, as seen in figure 25, designed by the founder; Ettore Sotsass, I made a design that was bold and out of my comfort zone. Memphis is about challenging design and I think this is important for designers to do. Mia Hamborg’s bright, colourful, height adaptable shuffleMH1 table, shown in figure 26, inspired me to stack. Its humorous childish charm utilises the beads for more than just a function. This project made me think more about aesthetics as I would usually prioritise the function.

“When you need to innovate, you need collaboration.” -Marissa Mayer (n.d)
Working in a group of six, we produced concepts to promote flipped learning. This adaptability approach enabled both independent and collaborative working spaces. From our research we discovered that 95% of students we surveyed would find adaptable learning environments beneficial. Working for Pearson Lloyd as a consultant taught me a lot about myself. I began to think about the wider aspects of research and analysis, which I think now makes the design process a lot easier. Conducting ethnographic research and SWOT analysis broadened my understanding of why we design. It made issues clearer and therefore easier to connect the dots to make a useful design. Previously, I found group projects difficult. I am naturally confident designing alone, as I like to be immersed in my projects. However, this project enabled me to develop my group working skills and I enjoyed working as part of a team. I became more confident in this project because I spoke up and lead the group to enable all the work was complete. I found it interesting to see the group’s thinking and bounce ideas off each other. Marissa Mayer, (n.d) said “When you need to innovate, you need collaboration". Which is something that now resonates with me. Although cliché, there is some truth in the phrase 'teamwork makes the dream-work'. I also learned a lot about my skill-set in this project. I discovered that my strengths in my design process are model-making and CAD. In my first year I struggled with CAD, as it was new to me. I persevered and I can now confidently produce renders in Keyshot and Solidworks, that I am proud of.

Conclusion
Reflecting on experiencing individual, brand and consultancy projects, I enjoyed each for different reasons. I loved working for a brand and tailoring to fit their needs, however I really enjoyed the freedom that the individual project led. In the consultancy project, I was able to see a clear shift in myself and my confidence. After university I would love to work as a freelance designer, and perhaps become a lecturer of design to share my passion and help guide the future generation of designers.
