A Message from the Chairman & President 2014 marked the beginning of our new community impact model through which United Way of Southwest Alabama (UWSWA) began investing directly in programs and services that support the four building blocks for a better life: health, education, financial stability, and essentials. As a result, UWSWA funded 79 programs run by 45 partner agencies in 2014. In this annual report, we have highlighted many of the programs that align with UWSWA’s community impact model and are demonstrating a positive impact. While we cannot include everything UWSWA and its partners have achieved over the past year, these featurettes celebrate hard work and accomplishments that will inspire further change. As we enter into a new year, we are excited to continue the work with our existing partners while adding new partners, advancing further the call for southwest Alabama to LIVE UNITED. Simply said, our partners find solutions to regional issues—from increased high school graduation rates to lower poverty rates—and are changing the story in our community, one person at a time, from cradle to career and beyond! This past year demonstrated how important it is for our region to experience the power of unity. Despite the decrease of financial support from all government funding sources, the community of southwest Alabama came together to advance the common good and create opportunities for a better life for all. Faced with these government funding cuts, you—our donors and supporters—rose to the challenge, allowing UWSWA to reach our 2014 campaign goal of a 1% increase over the 2013 campaign results. This resulted in raising more than $5 million through workplace campaigns and personal donations. It is also the third year in a row the campaign has increased over the year before—growing the campaign total by more than 10% over the past three years.

We recognize, however, that it takes more than dollars to change lives. It takes passion. It takes commitment. It takes a community of everyday superheroes. On January 1, 2015, UWSWA launched United Way Volunteer Connect, a website that matches donors, advocates, and volunteers with service opportunities in our neighborhoods. It is our vision that this free platform will increase volunteerism and further mobilize resources to meet community needs in southwest Alabama. As you read through this report, we hope you will take pride in knowing that you—our donors, partners, and friends—have made a difference for so many in our community. Thank you for proving that not every superhero wears a cape!

Featured Program: The MAEF Reading Buddy program, in partnership with United Way, helps students improve their reading accuracy and fluency by giving them the opportunity to read aloud to a community volunteer for at least one hour a week for a school year. Studies have shown that students who do not learn to read by the fourth grade are less likely to graduate from high school, so UWSWA has teamed up with Mobile Area Education Foundation (MAEF) to help students improve their literacy skills. UWSWA assists MAEF with recruiting and screening volunteers, as well as promoting the program and volunteer opportunities to the community.
As of fall 2014, 122 volunteers have been placed in 39 schools reaching 123 students.

As a VITA provider, UWSWA recruits and trains volunteers to assist individuals with tax preparation and educate taxpayers about the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and other tax credits for which they may qualify. The VITA program also provides free tax services for taxpayers 60 years and older through the Tax Counseling for the Elderly Program (TCE). And, the Facilitated Self- assistance program (FSA) allows tax payers to prepare and e-file their own tax return, using brand-name online software, from any place with Internet access, at any time and at no cost. UWSWA also serves as lead for the SAFE Coalition, a group of agencies delivering VITA filing assistance.
UWSWA is a founding community partner and steering committee member of BankOn South Alabama, which was launched in 2014. BankOn South Alabama is a collaboration of financial institutions and community organizations in eight counties in South Alabama that are working to reduce the number of people who do not have checking or savings accounts—the “under- and unbanked.”
There are approximately 30,000 under-banked & unbanked individuals in the Mobile area who might use costly alternative checking services.

Featured Programs: Since its creation in 2007, United Way 2-1-1 has been the premier referral resource for people who are seeking health and human services information. Through a UWSWA partnership with Lifelines Counseling Services, trained and caring operators answer questions and provide referrals to individuals seeking assistance.
In 2014, United Way 2-1-1 continued to serve our communities by answering 8,543 calls and providing more than 12,000 referrals. The Emergency Food & Shelter Program (EFSP) is a federal grant program governed by a local board and administered by UWSWA for Mobile and Washington counties. Agencies use ESFP funds to supplement their clients’ food, rent/mortgage, and utilities.
The most recent funding cycle brought a total of $169,255 back into Mobile and Washington counties to help people who are in need.

A Message from the Campaign Chair Considering the ever growing needs in our communities, at the start of the 2014 campaign, I issued a challenge to raise 1% more than the 2013 campaign. Immediately, numerous individuals and companies accepted the challenge and through their efforts helped us reach our goal. Once again, we have increased our campaign total from the prior year for the third year in a row. In addition to leading the call for raising money, this campaign also helped heighten awareness of the increased needs of people right here in our community. By transitioning to the Community Impact Model, UWSWA has been able to demonstrate how your donations to UWSWA can be a positive force and make a real and lasting difference. A total of 79 programs were funded in 2014 with the total amount invested in those programs exceeding $2.4 million. For me, one of the most compelling reasons for you to invest in UWSWA, is the careful oversight given by the UWSWA staff and volunteers to insure that we are supporting programs with proven outcomes— programs that help our neighbors and friends, and make our community stronger. While we celebrate achieving the goal of a 1% increase, that is not the important thing; it is what the money makes possible that is important. The lives it can change forever. The impact those funded programs have on individuals and families. The magnitude of what can be accomplished when generous people and effective health and human service programs work together is astounding—some might say heroic in size. The information you have read on the preceding pages is just a small window to view the change right here in southwest Alabama caused by your generosity. I want to thank those who joined us in keeping the momentum going during this year’s campaign by accepting the challenge and giving at least 1% more than last year—you truly are a campaign hero. The success of this year’s campaign goes far beyond the power of a single individual, though. It is our collective efforts as a community in supporting the campaign that makes it a success. We are thankful for the thousands of individuals and hundreds of local businesses that participated in our Donald Keeler 2014 Campaign Chair 2014 campaign and we want to take this Vice President of opportunity to thank this generous Human Resources, community for your support. 1926 society Early in 1926, Miss Elizabeth Fonde, Mrs. Lelia Hall, & Mrs. Corinne Wilson expressed to the President of the Mobile Chamber of Commerce, Mr. J.L. Bedsole, their concern regarding the need for a community-wide fundraising campaign. Mr. Bedsole suggested the formation of a Community Chest in October, 1926, & was appointed Chairman of the Community Chest of Mobile County. Over the years, the original Community Chest evolved into United Way of Southwest Alabama. Membership in the 1926 Society is reserved for our most generous benefactors & complements other recognition societies to which a donor may belong. Once a donor has given a cumulative total of $25,000** to United Way of Southwest Alabama, they will be recognized with lifetime membership. The society was named for the year the United Way of Southwest Alabama was founded and the giving circles are named in honor of the four pioneers who brought about its creation.

Get Connected. Volunteer Connect.
Launched January 1, 2015, United Way Volunteer Connect is a volunteer recruitment and management website developed to increase volunteerism and mobilize resources to meet community needs in southwest Alabama. For more information, visit www.uwswa.org
Hundreds of volunteers make a difference during United Way’s annual Day of Caring, which is a great opportunity for team-building and enables volunteers to have a hands-on impact in the community. Each year, volunteers spend one day at United Way partner agencies, meeting their needs by completing projects the agencies haven’t had the time, money, or staff to address. The 2014 Day of Caring saw 35 companies, totaling more than 500 volunteers, lend a helping hand at over 30 locations throughout Clarke, Mobile, and Washington counties. In the past 21 years, more than 5,000 volunteers have participated in United Way’s Day of Caring.
