KEY
The point of connectivity between natural environments and urban sprawl originates the introduction of built program that facilitates physical, mental, and spiritual restoration providing balance to counter chaos. The built form becomes the nexus of the network of walking paths and intervening landscape. The building itself becomes an urban presence that begins to activate the space and leads the user through the separation of public functions happening below and above while the restorative and health related programs occur at the center.

EXPERIENCE THE
ATRIUM
The Atrium provides an activating atmosphere that promotes physical and mental wellness while connecting you to your surroundings. While all of the amenities are visually and experientially connected, the program is appropriately designated to their own individual floors. The first communal space occurs at the main level, the ivy café, located at the heart of the atrium below hanging vines is a great place to stop for casual snacks and drinks, while the bridge restaurant on the top floor offers high end dining, and seating areas that allow for assembly and lounging. The atrium fitness center occupies levels 00, 01, and 02 it includes a naturalistic rock climbing wall, competition pool, and a range of different workout areas from cardio, to weights, and even group workout rooms. All of these areas have access to views to the rest of the site and Dallas beyond. The restore salon and spa located on level 03 offers a luxurious escape from the chaos of every day life, providing high quality salon services, as well as relaxing massage and specialty therapy rooms. All of these experiences are just some of the possibilities offered at the atrium.

DESIGN CONCEPT The bones of an outdated high school will become the design inspiration for an adaptive reuse and remodel that pays tribute to the building’s mid century style. The new open layout will welcome and inspire students. The newly designated ‘Early College’ school will become a more mature environment for students to succeed in their studies. The teacher’s lounge will become a relaxing escape, as well as a quiet environment for getting work done. The remodel will reignite school spirit, teacher pride, and prepare students for life after high school.

PROJECT STATEMENT A complete set of construction documents was presented in this remodel of the Texas Tech University Law School offices. Included in the construction documents were reflected ceiling plans, dimensioned floor plans, sections, elevations, furniture plans, and a material schedule, as well as a design for a custom ADA accessible reception desk. The goal of the project was to create an environment that evokes a professional, yet comfortable environment where professionals, staff, and students may all convene.

CLIENT NARRATIVE
My clients, husband and wife Mike and Emily Schwartz live in Austin, TX and are relocating to their hometown of Chicago, Illinois to be closer to family. The Schwartz’s have just returned from a yearlong trip around the world with their two daughters Paxton and Taylor. They hit pause on work and school after Mike was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, and decided to travel the world before his condition worsened. Emily is closing her jewelry store in Austin, but wants to continue her passion closer to home so that she can care for Mike; she wants to open an exclusive high-end jewelry studio at their home in Chicago. Their home needs to be in close proximity to the hospital so that Mike can see his doctors when needed. The couple wants their home to suit Mike’s needs, as he will eventually be bound to a wheelchair, but they don’t want it to look anything like a hospital. The Schwartz’s were inspired by their travels and would love to incorporate ethnic items, and nature, along with their current mid century furnishings to create an eclectic and stylish haven. The Schwartz family loves to be outside, so they would love to bring the outdoors inside, and have an outdoor living space as well. Their daughters both play the piano, so the Schwartz family wants their grand piano to be a part of their new home.

SITE AND LOCATION
STREETS
My client’s residence is located in Chicago, Illinois. I chose the North Chicago neighborhood of Wicker Park for their residence and studio. Wicker Park is known for its hipster culture, art community, nightlife, and restaurants. I selected a large lot in the heart of Wicker Park that is situated on the edge of commercial and residential neighborhoods. The lot has mature trees that add to the surrounding beauty, and will make for a great view when inside or outdoors. The residence is close to multiple hospitals, public transportation, restaurants, art galleries, and parks, which are all a walkable distance from the home and studio. The crime rate is very low in this area, and it is in a great school district.

ARCHITECTURAL
CONSTRUCTION PROJECT STATEMENT In architectural construction, many aspects of basic construction were covered from materials to construction techniques. The two projects featured here are the construction of a wall assembly using non-tradtional materials, and the construction of a moveable joint, and non-moveable mortise and tenon joint. The wall assembly was completed with a partner, and the joint was an individual assignment. All projects were completed in the Texas Tech woodshop, and various tools and techniques were used to achieve the end product. Some of the tools used were, table saw, mortiser, mig welding tools, plasma cutter, drill, and a drill press.

ARTWORK PROJECT STATEMENT The following is a compilation of artwork completed in architectural drawing classes, or in my spare time. There were various mediums used for each project, from watercolor and ink, to colored pencil and pencil.
