SOLUTION

Demonstrate an understanding and control of typography and typographic variables by designing a multi-page type specimen booklet. Showcase the typeface’s best features and qualities while showing the full array of characters and the various widths and weights within the type family. Include a brief history of the typeface, at least two anatomy diagrams, three quotes pertaining to creativity, and a creative, well designed cover.

Mort Modern Pro is a serif typeface in 56 styles inspired by mid-century advertising lettering. Because of this, I wanted the book to reflect a modernized midcentury. The teal, yellow, pink, and orange colors are reminiscent of the mid-century, while the stark black background gives the book a slick, modern look and feel. To show just how extensive the typeface is, I created a two page spread with blocks of color that feature a character of each weight and style, and a cover that showcases a variety of the typeface’s many glyphs in the same playful, eye-catching way.

SOLUTION

Develop a thoughtful, effective restaurant menu by utilizing a well-planned layout, offerings in multiple categories, well-written descriptions, and associated pricings. Demonstrate an understanding of clear typographic hierarchy, as well as appropriate font pairings and color in alignment with restaurant concept. Consider utilizing unique materials and creative construction.

For this project, I wanted to conceptualize a sophisticated, refined menu design that would reflect an equally sophisticated restaurant. The Glass House is a fictitious high-end cocktail bar & eatery located in Boston, Massachusetts. The waterfall pages are made of textured paper, giving them an elevated air of elegance. The pages are connected to a backboard - laser cut and engraved with the restaurant logo on the back - by a gold clip.

SOLUTION

Design and construct, first by hand, unique and creative packaging for a fictitious brand of sunscreen of your creation. Create the box as though it contains the sunscreen, and the bag as though it is from the store that sells products of that brand. Demonstrate an understanding of brand cohesion through brand identity design elements.

Mineral Beauty is a fictitious high-end skin care company that creates mineral sunscreens. Because this company sells expensive, high-quality products, the branding and packaging had to reflect that. As a result, I utilized a soft serif font paired with a clean, unobtrusive sans serif and a gold, grey, and white color palette. I also created a geometric pattern that matches the logo icon to help create more visual consistency and cohesion between products and packaging.

SOLUTION

Demonstrate an understanding of the four basic keyframes (position, rotation, opacity, and scale) in AfterEffects by creating a kinetic typography lyric video to a song of your choice. Videos must be at least 2 minutes in length and must include non-text layers, transitions, and layer effects.

“Selling the News� by Switchfoot is a grungy, biting, protest song. Its message and fast pace made it the perfect song to create a kinetic typography lyric video for. The style and imagery came naturally, but the real magic is within the transitions. The energy and movement of the song is captured within the quick, dynamic transitions between the lines of the song. Watch the video at erintaylordesign.net/design/selling-the-news.

rosewood manor CREATING AN ELEGANT EXPERIENCE FOR A HAUNTED MANSION HOTEL CHALLENGE

SOLUTION

Create a single-page, long-scrolling website for a fictitious boutique hotel of your creation. Develop the concept, branding, story, and services offered, as well as the written and visual content. Utilize the classes and components available in the Zurb Foundation 6 framework to create the page and interaction design.

Rosewood Manor is a fictitious haunted mansion hotel located in Newport, Rhode Island. The mansion hosts various events including weddings and concerts, and holds annual midnight ghost tours for those who wish to learn more about the history of the mansion and get a glimpse of the supernatural. The website highlights complimentary services that appeal most to guests, including a bar and lounge, complimentary wifi, and complimentary chauffeur services which make local exploration more convenient.

frankenstein A CLOSER LO OK INTO THE HEART OF FRANKENSTEIN’S MONSTER CHALLENGE

SOLUTION

Demonstrate an understanding of layout, composition, typography, and the principles and elements of design by redesigning the cover of a novel of your choosing. Covers must be created by hand with the use of creative materials and must include a front cover, back cover, spine, inside front flap, and inside back flap. Include the novel name, author, a line of information such as illustrator name or award designations, a synopsis, and a book review or critic quote.

Frankenstein is a classic gothic novel, filled with significant themes, rich imagery, and extensive symbolism. What surprised me most about the original story was the monster and how different he is from how he’s portrayed in pop culture. In the story, he is eloquent, intelligent, and above all else, wants to be loved by his creator. The cover reflects the conflict between the monster and his creator throughout the story. The heart - hand-stitched to the cover - represents Dr. Frankenstein’s creation and it’s desire for connection and love. The mismatched, scrambled letters hand-cut - represent the doctor’s descent into insanity as the story progresses.

SOLUTION

Using a theme from the first photo taken in class, create a short photo essay. Digital manipulation is not permitted.

Mortality, noun: the state of being subject to death. Similar: impermanence, temporality, humanity.

live music CAPTURING THE DEFINING MOMENTS OF A LIVE SHOW CHALLENGE

SOLUTION

Create photos that capture memorable, defining moments of a live show and embody an artist’s style and likeness. Work with constant subject movement in low light situations by balancing shutter speed, ISO, and aperture.

There’s nothing like a live show. The energy and sense of community is invigorating. Balancing all the most difficult circumstances a photographer can face including low light, flashing light, and continuous subject movement can be difficult and even frustrating, but being able to capture and immortalize moments that will never happen the exact same way again is something I am very lucky, and always thrilled, to do.

SOLUTION

Create an e-commerce website for a fictitious set of products of your choice and build it using WordPress and the WooCommerce plugin. Create 18 products across 3 categories and include a home, contact, about, and FAQ page. Create and maintain a consistent brand experience across a wide number of pages and user interface details.

The Anthem Society started as a blog for another project. It was a personal outlet that celebrated finding faith, community, and hope in music. I wanted to expand that idea into an online store that would create and sell tangible representations and reminders of the hope that is found in music. The Anthem Society store sells t-shirts, posters, and accessories based on the music of popular Christian and Christian-adjacent artists so people can carry that hope and share it with those around them.
