emotional... but real....
my point of view towards architecture is about exciting EMOTIONS in people. when they are passing by, using it or just seeing a glance of it. for me architecture is an ART and it should PROVOKE some emotions, reactions good ones but not ONLY the good ones... because than it creates discussions and we can MOVE FORWARD. it’s not art if you can’t get into a good argument about it. for me, what we design should NOT create an OBSTACLE for people. i’m always trying to ENGAGE PEOPLE in using the building/installation any kind of design as much as possible wheter i’m talking about roof or walls etc.. it should be an experience for people, they should feel something, EXCITMENT, FEAR, ANXIOUS... i like to think that my designs give people a feeling of a whole NEW WORLD, something out of regular life, like they are going through some invisible portal that brings them to the fantasy world, somewhere where they can feel differentlythey should wonder what is next? what is behind that “portal”, I WANT TO SEE MORE...

2014 workshop
this project started as a workshop created by považská gallery in žilina. the task was to create a new space for the gallery and reconstruct the old building previously used as STEAM POWER PLANT. this industrial building was built in 1908 and in 50’s was turned into “ciachovňa”. this new function changed the whole disposition of the interior but also changed the exterior. two big hall spaces turned into two storey separate buildings which mostly were used as a space for administration. we thought this interference made in 1958 destroyed beautiful industrial feeling that this power plant had. we got rid of the whole second floor where we just kept few platforms connected with bridges. the rest of the second floor is indicated by scaffolding poles which are used as construction great for hanging art pieces. in case of a great need for space, thanks to this framework the second floor can be made temporarily. to KEEP SOME SPIRIT which was created in 50’s we also left several LOWER CEILINGS as flowing elements in this huge space. to keep this steam power plant feeling we designed huge WALL INSTALLATION showing the whole process of a working steam power plant. main goal was to attract mostly young people. today kids don’t spend much time at galleries, clubs are just more fun. we tried to create a place where during the day parents and grandparents would like to visit but during the night it changes into this wild extravagant place where young people would like to hang out surrounded by art. we created this MULTIFUNCTIONAL SPACE where all artworks can be easily moved in space just by hanging on created frameworks. this construction also gives an opprtunity for wilder range of art that can be shown(performed) there. we were thinking of “studio 54” where this AVANTGARDE ART can be shown. people are part of this artistic performance, acrobats can do their show, exhibition of living sculptures can be held there.
unexpected city: 2014
3014 years A.C.
2014 years A.C. 2 million years B.C.
2014 competition
Every city has it’s own beauty and every type of dwelling has it’s perks. Some people love to live in house in suburbs; others enjoy living in skyscrapers and having beautiful view. After many many years of people living on this planet we cannot say what is 100 per cent right and what is wrong. There is no rule about how to live. In prehistoric times cavemen used to live in caves and that was something normal usual at that time nobody ever considered living meters and meters above ground. Today we moved up a little bit and enjoy more sunlight then in the past and we live on the ground level mostly. Only future is a mystery for us but we think that we can agree on that most of futuristic movies and books are picturing cities as flying objects and that we would finally manage to reach the goal of flying. Our proposal of unexpected city is based on our past, present and future. We would like to give people the CHOICE, POSSIBILITY to decide what kind of living they would like to have. We engage all three levels in our design: underground, ground level and sky. Everything is possible everything is unexpected. We have learned after the centuries that whole life and system in it is one big circle. Very often we are going back to the roots because we found out that something was better that way. This circle goes on and on in every aspect of life. We are not deciding what is best for people in global because everybody is an individual and has it’s own specific needs we are giving them OPTIONS .
Our design also reacts on a fact that many green areas are being cut down because of expansion of the cities. We thought that that is unnecessary step and we could handle this problem in a better way. The answer is CONCENTRATION. Concentration is something that in today‘s world, which is lacking on great parks and trees, is very necessary to think of. It can help to obtain enough living quarters and work spaces for people but still preserve as much greenery as possible. We are trying to use all three l evels: underground, ground level and sky. Change the horizontal distribution of city to vertical. It can create interesting look of the city and connections between three levels. In this world even the famous saying “ONLY SKY IS THE LIMIT” is becoming untrue because in our world nothing limits us. The world is full of possibilities and we are creating this fantasy world with even helping our environment. When we divide city more vertically not horizontally, it creates much more space for vegetation around us. The whole city becomes healthier thanks to its ambient with more green areas surrounding the city. People don’t have to drive hours to get out of the city to be in a nature because nature is becoming a natural part (border) of the city. this proposal doesn’t need specific site plan, it can be applied on every city on the earth!!!

since time immemorial, man has dreamed about flying and living in the sky. this dream came true and nowadays it is possible to fly around the globe, live hundreds meters above the ground in skyscrapers, even go for a holiday on the orbital station. yet, there are many places on the Earth unconquered. one of these are OCEANS. Underwater world is very inhospitable, one could tell, it is environmnent similar to different planets or mystical worlds. to see places deep under water is very difficult and man has to be in a very good physical shape. for most of people, underwater world is unreachable. The proposal brings the possibility to see and EXPERIENCE THE WORLD DEEP UNDER . Based on the structure similar to oil platform, we proposed a floating vertical underwater skyscraper - SUBSCRAPER . the only part visible from above the water is a CORAL -like structure which creates entrance to the whole building. hotel is vertically divided, platforms are connected by staircase and elevators which take care of all the internal communication. hotel rooms and apartments are placed around the vertical core. basic idea was to ALLOW THE VISITORS TO EXPERIENCE THE UNDERWATER WORLD ,thus each room has a large window opened to the unknown places of the ocean. simple vertical shape of whole underwater part of hotel helps the water to flow around the object. the waterflows is the ocean are very strong and can be used to produce energy in similar manner than tidal power plants. turbines for creating energy are located on the secondary structure around the main volume. purpose of this structure is to hold the turbines and also, to hold som lighting systems, to provide some light in the dark underwater areas and to make them interesting to watch from the hotel. hotel would be, similarly to floating oil platforms, anchored to the bottom.

CONSTRUCTION OF BUILDINGS , but also using them during their life-cycle are, with traffic and industry is one of the greatest aspects AFFECTING OUR ENVIRONMENT and climate. the proposed pavilion would be constructed by a COOPERATION between CONSTRUCTION COMPANIES and METHEOROLOGISTS, CLIMATOLOGISTS as the manifest to show the importance of ecological behaviour in all aspects of life.
materials used for pavilion are mostly reusable in their essence. pavilion is constructed from SCAFFOLDING POLES . http://lp.macfilesdownload.com/mac/ibr/video-performer this part represents buildings, today’s cities, everyday life which is not usually friendly to environment. above this area flies the“CLOUD” made of meteorological balloons. the importance of environment stands above everything. most of the materials(scaffolding, meteorological balloons) could be obtained as a sponsorship from related companies and after the deconstruction of pavilion would be returned to be used again. whole pavilion seems like CHAOS OF VERTICALLY FIXED POLES. these are not located on regular grid. spaces between poles are variable, from 12” inches to 14”feet, creating maze with some opened areas suitable for concerts, lectures, exhibitions, openings and other public activities. on the other hand, pavilion creates visible meeting point and chill-out area, even without any special occasion. vertical poles seem to have no system, but from one point of view, all the poles get into right positions to create a SILHOUETTE OF THE CITY OF NEW YORK . from other angles verticality of pavilion resembles the RAIN falling from the sky(or the clouds). there is a cloud flying above. created by wrapping metheorological balloons into light fabric(net) and tied to the ground, we get light roof structure to protect area of pavilion from rain and sun. by the opening of pavilion, the whole structure consists of grey steel scaffolding poles. to make the public participate on the design process and develop the pavilion by time as well, everyone can take a COLOR RIBBON, write a message on it and tie it on the vertical structure. by the progress of the time, GREY “CITY” pavilion BLOSSOMS into big colorfull installation, creating this GARDEN . to the construction process of this proposal should be, as mentioned, included construction companies with metheorologists and climatologists. according to this connection, events held in the pavilion could be related to environmental aspects of architecture and building industry. in cooperation with related institution, there could be created a thematical frame for number of exhibitions, lectures, discussions, etc.

goal of this project waSTOSECUREINSOLATIONOFURBANSTRUCTURES.plot that was given to us was in the city center so there were more problems with surrounded built-up areas.toSECURE ENOUGH LIGHT and also the possibility toUSE THE PLOT TO THE FULLESTwas theMAIN POINTfor me.there is always a problem in citycenter with lack of green areas and parking that’s why i decided to put them there.also to attract more people i decided to put there a shopping center.i put it to the ground andLIGHTGUIDESare securing some natural light inside.parking is on the second underground floor and park is still on the ground level.to assure enough light to every house there,i put it in the air and thanks to solar analysis i came up withA GRIDwhere none of the towers is shadowing the rest.if any is overshadowing the other even in a small amount, different heights of the towers are taking care of it.3upper floors are living, rest is used as a staircase, elevator or communal spaces.houses are divided to6DISTRICTSand every house in one districtCOLLABORATE WITH THE REST.ROOFSare covered withPHOTOVOLTAIC PANELSwhich PRODUCE MORE ENERGY THAN HOUSE NEEDSitself so it createsLOW - ENERGY HOUSE.

GRAPE FESTIVALis a festival of music held in Slovakia with quite a tradition.as probably with every other summer festival having shadow is very crucial. organisers gave us instructions and exactly a vision what are they looking for. it was supposed to be a MEETING POINT so people don’t loose each other and can easily find soGOOD VISIBILITYwas imporant.somehow incorporated theNAME OF THE FESTIVALin design, create aSHADOWfor people and aPLACEwhere theyCAN HANG OUTwere another requirements.this is what we come up with. answer was to put on frame pipes and make it as cheap as possible
seating
shadow good visibility question was how to incorporate a name and make it visible
everybody loves to drink during festival so safety was important to
create a design where people cannot get easily hurt and cannot fall eventhough it is high above them.
pipes are creating this maze,so people first have to overcome something to get in the middle where mattresses where to hangout. also boards on top of every pipe create a shadow for people
final design was this big head-line where many pictures could be taken, visible from far, creating shadows for the rest but also a hang-out place. it was a big sculpture

whole design was inspired by my childhood and difficulties to pay any attention. everything behind windows was far more interesting then history of codification of slovak language orfractions. i thought of a program where kids wouldn´t be distracted during the lessons but would be rewarded afterwards. biggest distraction was OUTER WORLD and question was how to get rid of it but still get enough light inside=LIGHT GUIDES.they would bring enough natural light inside and on the outside would create a SCULPTURE,COMPOSITION,BECOME ARTIFICIAL FOREST for kids where they could play during breaks and use their imagination to become anything. it would be far more abstract and playful for them then any normal shape of school buildings. as KEN ROBINSON(educationalist, speaker, author)said:,,SCHOOLS KILL CREATIVITY" and i think we should fight against that and support not only math ,science ,languages but also INCOURAGE KIDS TO USE THEIR IMAGINATION MORE,create spaces for them where they feel like on the other planet. by removing windows i also prevented classrooms from being too exposed to sun that it creates bad environment. by using light guides i would be able to get light from top, nothing would be distracting and light would be brought also into darker corners which would not be possible by using windows. i also thought about decreasing amount of energy used for heating, that is why i put most ofthe school into the undergournd level. disposition of school is pretty simple, i tried to get rid of useless hallways and decreased whole spaces to minimum(also helps with reducing the energy loss)=no need of great spaces, classrooms are just for learning, ground level is for spending time having fun. i preserved most of the plot that was given to us, it is divided into 3 parts,a part of school that is on the ground, artificial forest made of light guides and real forest with gardens for kids playing.
future =getting rid of windows=getting rid of distractions KIDS PAY ATTENTION

our main goal was to use containers to the fullest. we were tryingNOT TO REPRESS INDUSTRIALIST SIDEof this material by creating "farnsworth house"so that people would not be able recognize that it is all containers but make it the main design component. we wanted to softer it up and create thisORGANIC ILLUSIONthat would be visible from far away but when you come closer you can see mainly the containers. bondi beach is very famous and beautiful place next to tasman sea which inspired us to create thisORGANIC SEASHELLright on the cliff. the whole site plan it´s positioning reminded us about sydney opera house and we wanted to create a reference to this important symbol of australia.
architectural competition
climate of sydney is very famous for it’s high temperature during summers and not very cold wintes without any snow. we checked average temperatures during whole year and took it into consideration and conclusion was creating this ORGANIC TEXTILE MEMBRANE to secure good interior climate and inter-space around containers
with Tomáš Tholt the whole concept is based onSIMPLE PUZZLEof containers which are situated around central patio - interior/exterior area of house. patio is protected from weather influences byMEMBRANE SHIELD,but can site plan be opened directly to the sea and beach. each container represents one room and is opened to the exterior by large glass walls. swimming pool when privacy is needed, glazing can be blinded by curtains (made of container)

whole project was based on creating aSOLAR ENVELOPEwhich showed me the limits on how far i could get with my proposal without shadowing other buildings but securing enough light for my design. solar envelope gives you the limits but also creates a good basis for the form of a building because most of the time it creates crystalic shapes which can be very interesting. parcel was a VACANT LOT. i was looking at the panorama of the city and thinking what is bratislava missing and came up with this idea of aVIEW TOWER. solar envelope showed me where was the potential of situating the tower. another problem was, what’s with the rest of the plot?people should be able to do something there.then i came up with an idea of aLABYRINTH WITH TILTED WALLS created various types of emotions, experiences. but what’s up with walls? stairs are big phenomenon and almost everybody enjoys from time to time to sit there and rest. so there isHORIZONTALandVERTICAL LABYRINTH(made of stairs)and people can help wanderers to find right path. the form of a tower view is aSTEAMPUNK TREE. it should all scream this FUTURISTIC POSTAPOCALYPTIC MODERN VIBE.

task of this competition was to design a forest school-a new kind of education in a harmony with nature. the motto that i personally like is“THERE IS NO BAD WEATHER JUST BAD CHOICE OF CLOTHES”.based on this i came up with a proposal. every child has dreamt some day of a treehouse and just playing outside. i wanted to PRESERVE THE NATURE and create most natural thing on that plot. something that would BLEND IN, that is why the whole building should represent treehouse itself. part is elevated for better view and also to avoid of shadowing itself. basic shape is a house with saddle roof which EVERYTHING IS i repeated in a circle. the size of a house isJUST5X5METERSbecause there is no need for big spaces HAPPENING OUTSIDE. another important part of a design is central dome made of 3”pettals”. it can be rotating in every direction and creates aSHELTER for children butSTILLthey areOUTSIDE, breathing fresh air. to put a little twist to it every house straight from SOUTH is made of GLASS and everything on NORTHside is full house preserves WITHOUT HOLES to create heat-loss. this creates atypical houses and feeling of two kid starts to feel desire different designs from two different sides.

whole project was based on lots of physical models. we analysed our plot from several perspectives and and based on results we abstracted them and made new models which were inspiration for our proposals. i analysed the program of project that was given to us and according to NEED OF LIGHT(LX)in various rooms i sorted everything and put to 4GROUPS. that model was base for my project. it reminded me of a tree and i decided to use this pattern in a project and create this CONCRETE JUNGLE/FOREST.

square
plot of this assigned project was situated in city center. it wasABANDONED SQUAREwith a park areas and next to it were two university faculties. the program we were supposed to be following was an INFORMATION CENTER. for my proposal the most important thing was to build this centerWITHOUT REPRESSING FUNCTION OF A SQUARE.walking paths determined the shape of a center and to create this new functional square i moved it to the ROOF LEVEL. the form of a building was inspired by park areas of a whole plot. i felt a need to put there something that would beEASY for tourists to ask about, NOTICE, something that looks alive, like it’s a creature/animal crawling straight through the place and it’s limbs are creating guidance ramps to the top of a creature/square. because it is in a city center good walking connections were needed and i was trying to avoid making any obstacle for people by designing something there. i came up with a walking path straight through the center by creating a TUNNEL.people could go through without bothering to come inside the center but on the other side, it might inspire them to go there thanks to this tunnel. and see what’s inside. the whole roof could be also use as place for events such as summer cinemas, or music performances. it could attract also students from those nearby faculties to use this place more often for picnics relaxation etc. preserving of most important path through the center of square
current state of kollárovo square walking paths determined the shape of a actual center
basic shape would create an obstacle
need of some form that would blend in

muti-comfort house competiton’s rulesobligedustocreate living quarters, but only residents would benefit from this kind of proposition
from green park the whole comunity would benefit. need of preserving as much green as possible
my main idea was to create not just neccesary living spaces but also give a new spirit to this unused industrial quarter. i was thinking about ways how get the people to use this area more. the first question i asked myself was: ?WHICH PLACES ARE MOST ATTRACTIVE FOR PEOPLE TO USE? solution = PARK another question was: ?WHY SHOULD PEOPLE VISIT THIS PLACE? solution = LANDMARK with a function of a shopping center would bring more people to area and also it would become with it’s shape a sculpture of whole place, a meeting point. third asked question was: ?HOW TO PRESERVE A PARK BUT STILL CREATE LIVING QUARTERS? solution =TRAFFICABLE ROOFS whole idea of a project is that there is NO SEPARATION between public and private spaces. every inch of a plot is trafficable and accesible for everyone. there are big promenades between trafficable roofs which are people leading away from houses = creation of privacy. continuation of smaller promenades lead us to MAIN PROMENADE on the top of the shopping center.creates a great view and place for picnics.
the whole city was depopulated. need of a new impuls for the people to use it more. need to increase visit rate of people from nottingham but also of the turist. every great city in known for it’s symbol. for paris it ist eiffel tower, pisa is tilted tower, new york is known for statue of liberty. HOW ABOUT NOTTINGHAM??? there needs to be place that everybody would know, some meeting point.
basic shape came from simple block=landmark, because of height restrictions it was twisted and then tilted
paris
main loop (shopping center)was situated near the river to interact with it. continuation of the main loop creates smaller circles which stand for housing areas.

trafficable roofs were the solution for preserving the park areas but still create living quarters

specific heat demand

what a promenade
first floor divided to 3 segments housing & services
1 ground floor coffehouse
1underground floor cinema complex
simplicity of a loop makes it clear, elegant, sophisticated but still gives a dynamics to the whole area and becomes a sculpture
need of some landmark 2 floor lots of boutiques
