HUnGRY FOR HUNGARIAN

9 We can’t deny that it’s quite hard

for us to find fresh Hungarian food in Malaysia. Luckily we have Secret 009 Kalacs here in Publika. Secret 009 Kalacs serves Hungarian food such as Gulyas or Gaulash, a soup or stew of meat, and vegetables, seasoned with paprika and other spices, Chicken Cake, Olive Oil Grill Chicken, Nokedli and the famous Kurtos Kalacs. Kurtos Kalacs is a traditional wedding Pastry. It name as Kurtos Kalacs in Hungary languages. Kurtos means Chimney, where as Kalacs is a type of pastry between bread and cake. Kurtos Kalacs is made from sweet, yeast dough (raised dough), of which a strip is spun and then wrapped around a truncated cone–

shaped baking spit, and rolled in granulated sugar. It is baked above charcoal cinders while lubricated with melted butter, until its surface gets a golden-brown color. During the baking process the sugar stuck on Kurtos Kalacs becomes caramel and forms shiny, crispy crust on the cake. The surface of cake can then be provided with additional toppings such as chocolate, ground walnut or cinnamon powder. Secret 009 Kalacs was founded by Piroska, a 74 years old Hungarian lady from Hungary, who now lives in Malaysia. As a person who likes to cook and eat, she founded Secret 009 Kalacs and she would like to introduce her country food to Malaysian.

Who

would have noticed there is a hidden café at the most unlikely location? Located at the Regal Valet auto specialist centre, only a few might peer deep within and realise that something surprising has stirred here. For the food lovers you guys can go and visit Monkey Garage at Jalan Maarof, Bangsar another very friendly café in the hustling town of Kuala Lumpur. Not only known for the setting of the café that seems like a sanctuary for the locals, the café also serves daily specials such as on Tuesdays, customer can enjoy their lip-smacking Laksa Johor is, the straight-from-the-south recipe with spaghetti & creamy fish-&coconut gravy, while on Wednesdays there's a supremely hearty nasi tomato & ayam masak merah and on Fridays are currently reserved for nasi lemak & rendang.

You also can get a mouthful and delicious sandwiches from butter gipfel stuffed with scrambled eggs to pumpkin wholegrain ciabatta with hot beef salami & baguette with chicken & cheese here at Monkey Garage. We do not recommend the main course on the menu since it serve non-halal dishes. Not to mention their yummy desserts such as their speciality the Congo Bar, a basically a nutty blondie with chocolate chips. Of course since it is called Monkey Garage, you can enjoy their monkeyslove-bananas theme of a light such as smooth cheesecake with bananas & peanut butter and also a lovely caramel banana tart. You also will enjoy well the milk chocolate cake with marshmallows, banana cakes & other confections to tempt the sweet tooth. As on beverage, their Italian coffee and hot chocolate would definitely hit the spot on currently rainy days of Kuala Lumpur.

To meet and to feel

Art should be both splendid and sporadically

‘mean’, and to get from sensation to significance, it has to be missioned by persons, arbitrating between a sense of the past and an instinctive understanding of our surroundings. And perhaps, it is this objective which inspired Suarasa, brought to life with the intention of conveying together, a miscellany of works by artists of several generations Suarasa is merged from two Malay words, ‘sua’ (to meet) and ‘rasa’ (to feel). Rasa, of Sanskrit origin, meaning ‘juice’ or ‘essence’ represents a crucial spiritual state and is the passionate leitmotif of an objet d’art or the prime sensation that is educed in the individual who sees, reads and perceives such a composition. Now, after the success of Suarasa and Suarasa II, Suarasa III now beckons, featuring yet another formidable group of 27 artists showcasing 26 diverse works, a few returning from Suarasa II.

Fadilah Karim for one, the intensifying star; a wunderkind whose works of ‘shiny-not-sohappy-people’ making a return after her incredible two-woman show Msyt{EO}ry in MayJune this year, Aznan Omar’s aluminum plate Cyberlife of Obsession on communication breakdowns/meltdowns, Mastura Abdul Rahman’s ‘controlled’ fairy tales come to life under a Moon luminesce, and much more drama, of the primal, fantasies, politics of human conditions and so much more. Suarasa III is located at Segaris Art Center at Publika Shopping Gallery and is open to public from October 22nd 2014 – 14 November 2014, 10am – 7pm daily (including weekends and public holiday). The admission is free.

buried in art and coffee

Forget Starbucks when you’re in Malacca, and head to one of the best coffee places in the city, Calanthe Art Cafe. Located in a narrow alley just off the well-known Jonker Street, the cafe is like a quiet oasis, even though the decor doesn’t quite say the same thing – it is vibrantly furnished, with eclectic and creative touches such as rattan furniture hanging from the ceiling, hand-painted walls, and little trinkets on shelves throughout the property. Calanthe might be one good-looking cafe, but its wide array of coffee selections is what makes it famous. Besides that, the cafe also offers one-of-a-kind blends such as green tea coffee (green tea and coffee with whipped cream on top) and ‘Jealousy,’ a rich espresso blend with a dollop of mint paddy syrup; and ice-blended drinks such as ‘Cendol Ice Blenz’ (palm sugar and coconut milk topped with red beans and cendol) and ‘Pink Lady’, a concoction of vanilla, ice, whipped cream and strawberry sauce. Alongside coffee, other delicious drinks such as milk shakes, smoothies, teas, and soda mixes are also on the menu, all creatively-curated for the non-coffee drinker. With the tagline ‘The First and Only One’, Calanthe is unique, serving specialty coffee drinks from all the 13 states of the country, so if you’re an adventurous coffee aficionado, this is definitely something you want to try.

The Timeless Town

49

Malacca is the historical state of Malaysia, rich with heritage buildings, ancient landmarks and colonial structures. It was here that colonial forces first made contact with Malaysia, which eventually shaped the country into its current economic and political system. Today, in Malacca, you can still see the imprints of British, Dutch and Portuguese forces left behind in forts, museums, churches and towers. You'll learn about the rich heritage and history which has shaped Malacca into the unofficial historic capital of Malaysia. The most prominent contribution that Malacca has lent to the Malaysian cultural landscape is the Baba-Nyonya culture. Possessing an entirely new blend of customs, traditions, food and lifestyle, the Nyonya are especially prominent throughout Malacca.

Although the city is a mix of old and new with historical buildings standing side by side with ultra modern shopping centres it retains this seamless blend of cultures. At the Jonker Street located at small streets in Chinatown in the city centre, tourists can experience and taste lots of authentic and rare food. Along Jonker Street there aren’t a lot of sightseeing opportunities unless you count the noisy Chinese New Year song-and-dance show that takes place this time of year. Visit Malacca for the cultural experience of a lifetime. Malacca is a small city with many eye-catching sights and attractive modern establishments. It is easy to get around on foot or trishaw to explore the many places that make it unique.

For the love of mural Murals are getting viral nowadays. From just an art of vandalism, things are getting more serious when it gets recognition and acknowledgement from the government. We also can see a few 3D art museums are open in Kuala Lumpur, Penang and even Port Dickson. These kinds of arts were even appreciated when the government take the chance to enhance the back alley called #lorongbelakang project, the Laman Seni 7. It was the initiative of Ma jlis Bandaraya Shah Alam (MBSA) to change the back alley environment become cleaner, safer and can be visited by people. The artworks were chosen through the Laman Seni 7 Competition which were categorized by 3D Painting, 3D Installation, Street Furniture dan Painting On Site.

Depending on how detail you are in appreciating art (or photography for that matter), you can easily spend one hour at this Shah Alam attraction. Bring along your cameras, gopros, smartphones, selfie stick and have a fun and ‘hipster’ your time here at Laman Seni 7. Organised by KHZNH Studio, Laman Seni 7 is bigger, grander and more exciting. You can get here by driving or ride a bus to any of these landmarks and Laman Seni 7 will be within walking distance such as Tutti Fruitti Seksyen 7 Shah Alam, Islamic Steakhouse, Restoran Wong Solo Seksyen 7 Shah Alam. Once you are at the above landmarks, just walk into a nearly back alley and you will be able to spot the murals. If you can’t find any street art or murals and can only see mices, stink drainage or even a guy doing dishes, then you are at a wrong back alley!
