NO-MAD

PUBLIC ART INSTALLATIONS FOR THE HOMELESS With so many homeless people living on the streets, it is a constant effort to try and reduce the numbers of these individuals year by year. Social services, medical clinics, food centers, night shelters, and other amenities the city provides the homeless with are what help create homeless zones. These zones are what create the most problems for the city, the residents of these neighborhoods, and the neighborhood business owners in the city. Creating a balance between a major issue that creates problems, and artistic expressions that can communicate emotion is what this thesis attempts to balance. Can the local or world renowned urban artist coexist with the down and out misunderstood homeless population to create a diluted image of the street dweller? No-mad challenges the question changing peoples perception of what homelessness is within the urban context.

URBAN ART CENTER

CONTEMPORARY URBAN ART CENTER FOR URBAN STREET ARTIEST A contemporary urban street art center will be the final embrace the city of San Diego needs to give its vibrant street scene world recognition. San Diego is quickly becoming a well known urban landscape which many world renowned street artiest have swept for a blank canvas. The urban art scene is widely becoming internationally accepted by the modern day urban user, it is becoming a art form expression that is breaking though the urban block walls and onto the blank walls of white modern art museums. Locating a urban art center in a commercialized area with large empty block walls can be the catalyst to develop a city art walk district that will revitalize a vacating business area. The design re purposes two abandoned commercial buildings to add floor program with minimal site impact. The “bridge” is the urban representation of where a majority of street art is found.

MOUNTAIN VIEW LIBRARY DIGITAL MEDIA & BOOK STACK IMPROVEMENTS

The current Mountain View Beckworth Library is one many public libraries in San Diego county that is in need of digital media upgrades. Currently, the library has minimal floor space and can not support a digital media center for the techsavvy generations who attend the neighboring Education Cultural Complex. The building rest on a sloping grassy lawn with surrounding trees that nest it in a relaxing park setting. The heavy set symmetric structure has the potential to increase its program space by adding atop of what exist with little change. A out door performance/reading area, coffee shop, media room, book stacks, faculty offices and terrace space were added programs in the design. The added form stays true to its low supporting mass creating two new inviting entrances to the library. One entrance will face the main road adjacent to the parking lot, and the other will invite those from the grassy mounds though a sloping grass ramp. YANTALO HOTEL

OFF THE GRID VOLUNTEER AND PATIENT GUEST ACCOMMODATIONS The Yantalo Hotel project is a extension for the Yantalo Peru Foundation run and organized by Louis Vasquez. A Farming town with a population of 4,000, Yantalo sits in the heart of the Peruvian Amazon, about 5 miles from Moyobamba, the Capital of northern state of San Martin. The project asked for hotel accommodations for the volunteers and visiting family members of patients being treating at the Yantalo International Clinic. The hotel calls for the standard hotel amenities to serve guest and clinic volunteers comfortably with the use of passive systems to maintain operating cost. Solar and prevailing wind passive systems heavily influenced the building orientation and design. Farming is deeply rooted in the community of Yantalo so designing a ECO system master plan that allows volunteers to grow and harvest food for the kitchen was another method used for lowering the hotels operating cost. Utilizing local building materials (local trees for timber), maintaining operating cost and generating a simple yet well designed hotel for the Yantalo Peru Foundation are the design essentials behind the project.

LIGHT BAND APARTMENTS LUXURY HOUSING WITH PRIVATE PARKING ACCESS

The location for the complex presented a significant elevation change from the southeast corner to the northwest corner of the site. The change in elevation was twenty-one feet, with most of the site being relatively level near the center of the site. Taking advantage of the existing site conditions, the decision to generate a series of multi-story dwellings that would gradually tier off one another and manipulate the existing grade around each unit made it possible to provide some units with underground parking. The units with parking would allow those living in a garage unit direct access into their apartment from the master plan parking below grad. Providing a exterior exposed structure that would unite each unit to one another allowed floor plates to be located at various heights above the sloping grade. The multi-story units were arranged in a way that will maximize views and form private and shared terraces space that will connect neighbors as well as create private and public spaces above the sloping grassy grade below. Each unit filters in natural light though the top perimeter walls as no walls around or within the unit are structural barring.

BALBOA PARK

CONNECTION THE FORGOTTEN EAST MESA Several renowned planners have participated in the shaping of Balboa Park. Preparing either comprehensive plans for the entire park or designs for specific areas of it, such as Morley Field. Each plan is and should be a reflection of its time so to service and give the people whom experience the park a piece of current and past history. The East Mesa is compromised of 620 arches, the east half of the Balboa Park within the city of San Diego. Florida Canyon, with the remnants of the natural environment, the active recreational facilities developed in Morley Field, the former Arizona Landfill, the Park Nursery, the Golden Hill area, the City Operations Station, and the neighboring edge at the East Mesa perimeter are all sub areas that make up the east mesa. Continuing the prominent axis from the Central Mesa to the East Mesa can capture the parks true value and can be utilized as a modern design expression by building upon the open mesa and canyon slopes that remain today.
