What is art? What is an artist? What is the dialogue between the artwork and the viewer? This new contemporary art museum, located in Antwerp, seeks to respond to this conversation by breaking the barrires of the conservative museum idea and creating a story that revolves around the freedom of personal discovery and contemplation within the building.

By communicating with its surroundings at designate “public” floor levels, their transparency, and exposure; the vertical narrative becomes apparent as both serving & served spaces create codependent sequences in terms of controlled & free spaces.

The Why Factory (T?F) is an international think-tank and research institute led by Professor Winy Maas, who is also a founding partner of MVRDV. Its primary focus is to explore the potential development of urban areas through the creation of models and visualizations for future cities.

The educational and research components of The Why Factory converge within a research lab and platform, aiming to analyze, theorize, and build future cities. By examining the existing world, The Why Factory investigates and presents future scenarios that go beyond the current reality, encompassing both broad and localized perspectives. It generates concepts, constructs, and envisions speculative societies and cities, blurring the boundaries between scientific inquiry and fictional exploration. Consequently, The Why Factory serves as a mechanism for generating future world scenarios.

Pixel Planet represents an innovative initiative that delves into the potential of prefabrication in the field of architecture. This visionary endeavor expands the boundaries of modular architecture, envisioning habitable environments within a pixel-based realm. In our pursuit of sustainable development, we consider factors such as carbon emissions, energy efficiency, economic viability, circularity, and self-reliance. To accomplish this, we have devised a pixel generator that empowers users to customize their desired units, clusters, and landscapes, tailoring them to their individual preferences and requirements regarding CO 2 emissions, energetic performances, cost assessment, circularity and self sufficiency. Located near the recently constructed Waal bridge, the abandoned NYMA site can be found in Nijmegen. It was at this site in 1929 that the NYMA rayon silk spinning mill was initially established. As time progressed and reached the 1960s, production operations were relocated overseas, leaving the NYMA site to focus on manufacturing semi-finished goods. Unfortunately, in 2009, the company permanently ceased its operations. However, the historical significance of this Waal-based location has prompted its redevelopment as a thriving hub for urban innovation.

Although numerous structures on the premises have been demolished, a few distinct factories still remain. Among them, Factory AB, which includes the coil bleach, C3, and the water tower, holds a prominent position. In order to revitalize the NYMA site, we have devised a design plan for the NYMA makers’ place, centered around this particular factory.

By encasing the building with a protective shell, the original concrete structure remains untouched and is revealed to the viewer. Behind the glass, both the creators and the building take center stage. Emphasizing sustainability, energy efficiency, and circularity, these principles have guided the design process. Consequently, the entire building is maximally insulated, enabling the roof to function as an efficient energy generator.

While numerous architectural interventions have been incorporated, the primary focus always revolves around the building itself and its eventual utilization through an organic process. Gradually, the building will be integrated into practical use, with phase 1 expected to commence in May 2023.

The NYMA makerspace seeks to foster a harmonious synergy among craftsmanship, innovation, culture, and art in Nijmegen. Furthermore, it aims to fortify the creative manufacturing industry in the region.

To enhance the library’s atmosphere and encourage collaboration, our project involved integrating interactive furniture into the space. We proceeded to establish five key design elements: partial privacy, secluded areas, meeting spaces, casual seating, and visual appeal. The objective was to create flexible areas within the library that could adapt over time, accommodating not only study spaces but also providing retreats and inviting informal zones.

Our concept, known as ‘Apart But Together,’ explores the interplay between different levels, resembling an engaging undulating indoor landscape. This walkable landscape introduces new possibilities for future utilization of the TU Delft Library.

The lingering thoughts in our subconsciousness create distorted realities. We often travel within these spiritual spaces when we think of reliving a memory. Even though the feelings we transcend to the present time rememberings are accurate, the visual representations and imagery of them could become shifted, manipulated and distorted; and even contemplated, with a fictional twist.
