NARRATIVE LOOP Instructor_ Bernard Tschumi Advanced Studio_ Interactive Program Time_2015 Fall Partner_ Emilie Wang

The site of studio is a typical Manhattan block, made up of six programs (100’x200’x100’ ). We will have one of the six blocks and share a INTERACTIVE GALLARIE in the front of each of our blocks and our concept should base on this basic ideology. Just as tunnels underground mentioned by “The Burrow”, Franz Kafka’s story. I try to introduce a series of narrative spaces as my main circularion to explore an informal auditorium which happens inside a formal auditorium, a system inside a system. Trying to use this juxtapostion to explore a new way to express architecture for public mass and furthermore enhance the interaction between them.

PERSPECTIVE SECTION

AXONOMETRIC PLAN

UNFOLDING NARRATIVE PLAN SEQUENCE The programmatic circulation creats not only an informal experience for the six auditorium, but also a coherent spatial sequence inside a typical Manhattan block. This can give us another way to express architecture, which can be seen as a story. The circulation is a way for people to follow or to discover like a main clue. There will be three types of space, public programmtic circulation space, auditorium space and the in-between space between outside envelop and inside auditorium box.

IN NATURE Instructor_ Leslie Gill/ Mike Jacob Advanced Studio_ Color Studio Time_ 2016 Spring Award_ Selected Work in GSAPP Abstract

The project is about the new way how human beings engage with the landscape in Arctic area. Svalbard is a long history island being used by human beings due to the abundant mineral resources. At the same time, this brought a unfriendly way for people engaging with the landscape here. So instead of constructing a completely new building, a series of surgical land intervention are performed on the existing gentle topography and existing mineral footprint. Through preserving the topography and landscape, and adding simple elements of architecture, architecture here encourage new human engagement in fragile Arctic area. Not only show the idea of preservation related to the past, but also introduce a new way for human beings to engage with nature in Svalbard in the future.

TECTONIC SECTION This section shows the relationship between the geological columns with the building and the landscape. The same materiality perception and color environment between the Arctic earth and the columns can integrate the atomosphere and materiality of the whole building. A 30cm-thick, white concrete roof billows up to 12.5m above the damaged mineral basement. Freely dispersed columns grow seamlessly from the earth to the arctic sky, while the interior is marked off by walls of double 20mm-thick glass. There’s a clear formal relationship between the walls, the floor, the columns and the roof through the interplay between the materials and the subtle edge detailing. All the elements work harmoniously together in the composition, but the starring role clearly belongs to the geological columns.

DICTYO-CITY, RETIFORM LILONG SAMPLE PLATE Instructor_ Fei Ye XAUAT Excellent Final Design_ 2nd Honor in Shaanxi Province Time_ 2015 Spring Site_ Shanghai China

How cities we live in will become after several years? I purpose that future cities will not only expand Two Dimentional but also vertically to the sky which can be defined as “3-Dimentional Growth” . Core tube structures and the plates linked them will become a web together as the basement for future occupancy. So this design will focus on the variations of contexts in this future “Dictyo-City”. Shanghai is a complex site to discuss this thesis due to the contradiction between its fast development and cultural background. How to decompose the cultural and contextual spirit in Shanghai and then to materialize and locolize it for the future “Dictyo-City” is the key issue to be responed through this design.

RE-THINKING BIM Instructor_ John Lee Visual Study_ Renovation Time_2015 Fall Site_Washington Park, New York

The “ReThinking BIM” class is a visual study seminar which needs us not only to build a real building in New York but also to design a series of parametric “Adaptive Components” by using the tool of Revit. We will use Chamelon to link Revit with Rhino, Grasshopper and its plugins such as Kangaroo Physics, DIVA, Weaverbird and Hammingbird in order to represent a entire project.

MOVEMENT AND SPACE

Student Movement Points

Instructor_ Lorenzo Villaggi Visual Study_ Measure Time_ 2016 Spring Award_ Selected Work in GSAPP Abstract 2016

Low

High Productivity

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS and the PROXIMITY of a student to MOVEMENT is consequential to his/her productivity especially for creative designers such as architects. We believe there is a positive correlation between those students exposed to more social interaction and productivity during studio hours in GSAPP, with those able to be more productive who are more susceptible to social influences. I hope this result can be used as DATA resource as guidence for future design model. Develop critical arguments about the use or systems of space, strategies enabling feedback loops within the conventional architectural design process.

WALKING ON THE FACADE Instructor_ Fei Ye Basic Studio_ High-rise Studio Time_ 2014 Summer Site_ Shanghai, China

DESIGN PROCESS

Ancient lanes and neighbours are seperated by crowded modern traffics and blocks in modern Shanghai. Furthermore, the communications of residence become weaker. High-rise is a way for modern city to mitigate population pressure. But modern high-rise still neglect the neighbourhood system and just built as a living machine. So in this project we can find another way to rebuild sky lanes linked space to balance this paradox. Giving residence another way to live in an interactive skyscraper just like “Walking on the facade.

GROUND FLOOR PLAN(FIRST FLOOR)

UNFOLDING FACADE DIAGRAM

SECTION & DETAIL Steel beam with the reinforced-concret slab can reduce the load-bearing and better link the vertical core and sky lane outside. Thus to form the sky yard as the public spaces for residents to use. Lanes and Yards can offer many opportunities for neighbourhood meetings and communications. Helps to break the boundary of floors in traditional high-rise and rich the spatial relationship inside architecture.
