IREX
Pellistor Replacement IR Gas Detector
C2H5OH C 3H 6 LPG
IREX is an innovative infrared (IR) flammable gas detector designed specifically to directly replace pellistor (catalytic bead) type flammable gas detectors. IREX operates from control systems designed solely for use with pellistor-based gas detectors: it produces a mV Wheatsone Bridge type signal (as per a pellistor) and operates from as little as 2.9Vdc. IREX is supplied with an M20 type fixing enabling originally installed detector junction boxes and cables to be retained.
IR Technology versus Pellistor Gas Sensors Pellistor sensor technology has provided effective flammable gas detection at low cost for many years. Pellistors do however have several disadvantages: • Pellistors do not fail safe: sensors can be ‘poisoned’ and rendered insensitive to gas by silicones, lead, sulphurs and chlorinated compounds. • Pellistors must be operated behind a sinter (flame arrestor): which may become blocked, thus preventing gas from reaching the sensor. • Pellistors may burn-out: if exposed to gas concentrations in excess of 110%LEL.
All of these issues are overcome using IREX.
• Pellistors are high-maintenance: sensors must be regularly tested with gas to ensure they are still operational. Sensors typically last 3-5 years, after which they must be exchanged. • Pellistors need oxygen: their ability to detect gas reduces significantly in oxygen deficient atmospheres.
The IREX concept enables pellistor-based gas detection systems to be upgraded to dual-wavelength IR gas detector technology without incurring the very significant costs associated with upgrading the control system and re-installation. STAY-CLIR optics: optical components are treated with a patented coating to prevent potential obscuration in condensing atmospheres. Unlike conventional IR gas detectors, IREX does not require heated windows or mirrors. As a result IREX consumes only 1 Watt of power which ensures compatibility with a wide range of control systems.

Sinter-free operation: pellistor based detectors and other IR type gas detectors are fitted with sinters (flame arrestors) to achieve Exd Flameproof certification. Sinters slow response time significantly and can become blocked by contaminants: a dangerous un-revealed failure.
3rd party validation: IREX has been independently tested for reliability and performance in harsh offshore conditions by Micropack Engineering Ltd a highly respected test authority. This, along with 3rd-party approval to the performance standard EN60079-29-1, demonstrates IREX will operate dependably in any application.
IREX Accessories: • Spigot gland: for mounting IREX to existing M20 junction boxes (supplied) • Mounting bracket: suitable for wall or pipe mounting (not required if spigot gland is used) • Sun Shade/Collector Cone • Duct sampling unit • Calibration cap (required if ambient air speed exceeds 2m/s)

Detectors Infrared flammable gas detector you can trust
Nimbus
Nimbus Nimbus is compact and lightweight but rugged. Maintenance is simple, and because it is compatible with handheld and laptop computers, units can be checked by a single engineer. It can be integrated into existing systems with ease. Nimbus protects staff and property without making your life complicated.
Rugged & reliable
Simple maintenance
Nimbus has been designed to be lightweight but tough.
Nimbus has a local external status light which shows, at a glance, if the unit is in normal function or fault. When a hazard is detected it indicates both rising gas and alarm levels.
Even in the dirtiest conditions Nimbus still functions. The optics operate at up to 90% obscuration. While still detecting gas, at 75% obscuration a dirty optics warning flashes so you know when to clean Nimbus. Dust and water ingress are not a problem either as Nimbus is rated IP66 and IP67. Allied to this Nimbus has full approvals from both EUROPE and North America.
The status light clearly indicates 22 further conditions for instant diagnosis. Nimbus is simple to use even in inaccessible areas. A duct mounting plate is available, which incorporates a remote gassing port to allow calibration checking without requiring entry into the duct.
Nimbus has a MTBF of 10 years. This figure has been independently assessed using the MIL Handbook 217F/2/12/91 In short you can rely on Nimbus to protect you.
One man calibration
Flexible installation
Nimbus is compatible with Windows software, which means that a Windows compatible portable PC can be used to check gas levels, find faults and change configurations in the field. Only one person is required to do this.
Nimbus can be integrated into existing situations with ease. It has a RS485 output and dual redundant 4-20mA outputs, compatible with metric and imperial armoured cable and conduit.
Nimbus is fitted with an optical Communications Interface Module, to allow connection of a PC without opening the detector. For detectors installed in a hazardous area, the configuration and status can be checked remotely using the Modbus serial link.
The Modbus serial link allows addressable detectors to be looped providing a remote control and interrogation facility. For facilities where Nimbus is replacing a pellistor based detector the pellistor mimic means that existing cabling can be retained to reduce upgrade costs.
Nimbus, the total system solution It can interface with any standard control system, or combination of systems, new or old.
