The Making Of

Into the Stratosphere layout version 5

Now is your chance to learn more then you ever wanted to know about the making of the article “Into the Stratosphere”.

H

ere are five versions of the two page layout for the first article in our magazine. They were made on InDesign. The pictures were made on Illustrator. They were converted from ai files to jpegs so that there would not be any unwanted issues with the font. The headline in these layouts is “Into the Stratosphere”. All of theses have a deck and a pull quote. All five also have a folio, at least one piece of art, and a body copy. I played around with where I thought the headline, pull quote, and deck should go

until I found the one I liked best. The last layout has two more pieces of art then the other ones. The last layout is my favorite because the others have too much open space. I feehat the extra pictures makes it feel more completed. My favorite spacing for the head is on the forth one. I think it looks nice and crisp in three lines. However, with the extra two pieces of art, it looked to crowded with the headline arranged in this format.

Logic Behind The Art

Logic Behind the Art Many steps went into the making of the album art Into the Stratosphere. Here is a detailed explanaition of the steps involved

original photo

8 Cloud Coffee 2013

I

started with a picture that I took in the front of my house. I then opened a new document in adobe illustrator and set that picture as the background. I made a new layer and called it sky. On that layer I started drawing shapes around different shades of the sky. I used the pen tool to do this. I drew the shape around the first area of the sky and set the fill no none while I was drawing the shape. I then used the eyedropper tool to get the best color. I started at the back and moved my way forward. I went from the darkest area of the sky to the lightest. After each shape was done I hid it so that I could see the picture that I was working with.

After the first step

I

then made a new layer and started on the clouds. I hid the sky layer. Then I drew a shape around each area of the clouds. I set the fill to none while drawing the shape and used the eyedropper tool to find the best shade to fill the clouds with. I hid each sub layer so that I could see the picture. With the clouds, it was necessary to periodically set each sub layer to visible so that I could see how it looked and if I had missed any important difference in color of the cloud.

fter the clouds were the trees and the houses. I hid the cloud layer. I used the pen tool to draw a shape around the darkest shade of trees. I set the fill to none while I did this. After the shape was finished I used the eyedropper tool to pick the right color. I then hid that sub layer. I moved onto the next darkest shade in the tree that I was working on. I used the pen

tool to draw the shape of it. I had the fill set to none while I did this and again used the eyedropper tool to find the right color for that shape. I continued in this way until I finished the trees. Every so often I would make the sub layers visable so that I could see how the trees looked up to that point.

fter the sky, the clouds, and the trees, I went to work on the houses. I hid all the other layers so that I could see the picture that I was working with. I started with the darkest shade of the roof that was in the bottom right corner. I then

hid that sub layer and moved on to the next darkest. I continued that until I was done with all the houses in the picture. I then made all layers visible and started working on the text for the image.

Versions

T

here were four different versions of the artwork. The first one wasn’t square and didn’t have an album title. I fixed both these problems in the second picture. I made the image square. I added an Album title. I put the band name under one of the clouds and I put the album name on the top of the same cloud. On the third version I changed the font to

Cloudy and moved the album title so that it was floating in the sky. In the final version I Made the band name a littler bigger and I moved it to the bottom of the image. I also made the album title a little larger and made it look like it was floating away.

Variations

18 Cloud Coffee 2013

These are three variations that I did on the sky image. I made all of these using Adobe Illustrator. In the first one I only changed the color scheme. The effect to me seems to be a sort of dreamlike quality. The image altogether looks vague and faraway. In the second one I changed the color scheme again and I also added a brush stroke. The result has a sort of chaotic and nightmarish feel. The last one I kept the original colors but added a brush stroke. This one makes me thnk of a stained glass window.

Crazy Coffee Would you drink any of thes coffees?

T

his was originally the coffee cup that everyone drew. I got the original picture from http://tewview.files.wordpress.com/2010/08/coffee-cup.jpg. I placed it into a new file in Adobe Illustrator. I then used the pen tool to go over the darkest shape in the background. I set the fill to none

while I made the shape. I then used the pen tool to select the color of the shape. I made the whole picture in this manner. I then changed the color scheme to different groups until I got something I liked. These are three of my favorite results.

Wonderland Tea Parties T

his wonder of a teapot was originally one of the one hundred line drawings. I used a teapot from the classroom. I used Adobe illustrator. I used the paintbrush tool and I used a tablet. After drawing the teapot I highlighted all the lines. I then changed the brushstroke to Imperial Red.

The resulting image makes me think of all the various versions of Lewis Carol’s Alice In Wonderland. Below is a variation using the brush stroke called Elegant Curl and a veriation using arrow heads.

EVOLUTION of The Blue Cup

The image on the bottom right corner is the original blue teacup. This image was made in Adobe Illustrator. It was made using the paintbrush tool and a tablet. In the revised version on the left page I lowered the teacup on the page. I also add-

ed a shadow so that it appears to be firmly on the ground.. In the version on the bottom left of this page I simply changed the color scheme.

Value Drawings These are my value drawings. I made them using adobe illustrator and my tablet. I used varying shades of grey and white. I drew the pop can and the bowl at home. I used a small table lamp to control the lighting. I drew the pitcher in the classroom. The thing that I like most about the pop can is

that it looks full and it has the dimensions of a pop can. The thing that I like most about the pitcher is that the lines seem to give it movement and it has a feel as if it was made out of wet clay.

Shades of Orange I

made these pictures using Adobe illustrator, my tablet, the paintbrush tool, and different shades of orange. I tried to convey the shadows and highlights on the cappuccino cup, the espresso maker, and the teacup. I drew these in the class-

room. I used objects that were in the classroom. The thing that I like most about the espresso cup is the curved line rising above the cup that looks like steam. This was originally a stray line, but I liked the way it looks so I decided to keep it.

Bizarre Vases Did you want the vase made out of telephone chord or the one made out of feathers?

T

he image on the bottom right is the original one hundred line drawing of a vase. This was bade using Adobe illustrator, the paintbrush tool and a tablet. The image on the bottom left is a variation of the one hundred line drawing of the

vase. This image was made by changing the brushstroke to a feathery one. The image on the left page is another variation. This one was made by changing the brushstroke to one called spiral cored.

Mysterious Mugs Imagine drinking out of these mugs.

T

hese are variations of my one hundred line drawing of the mug. I mad the drawing using Adobe Illustrator. I used a tablet and I used the paintbrush tool. In these three variations I changed the brushstroke of the origi-

nal one. In the image on the left page I changed the brush stroke to hearts. In the image on the bottom left of this page I changed the brushstroke to soft edge marker. In the image on the bottom right I set the brushstroke to small circles.

The Gray Teacup

This image was originally a green teacup on a red background. I drew it in adobe illustrator. I used the paintbrush tool. I used a tablet. I got this variation by changing the colors to a harmonious group of purples. For the background and grays for the cup. The thing that I like about this picture is that it has an airy feel to it.

Sketchy teacup This image is another version of the green teacup. I drew it in adobe illustrator. I used the paintbrush tool. I used a tablet. I changed the color scheme to purples and greys. I then changed the brush strokes to one point and default brush. I think that this image looks like a sketch. It is that sketchy feel that I like about his image.

One lonely Pop Can This is a variation of the pop can that is featured in the article “Value Drawings. As previously stated, this was made in adobe illustrator. It was made using the paintbrush tool. It was made using a tablet and a pen. The color scheme of this image was changed from the various shades of grey in the

original image to shades of grayish blue. I think this image pops off the page a little more than the one done in all gray. I also think that this image has a lonely and almost depressed mood to it.

Crossed The Line

This is another variation of the pop can that is featured in the article “Value Drawings. Just like the others, this image was made in adobe illustrator. It was made using the paintbrush tool. It was made using a tablet and a pen. The color scheme of this image was changed from the various shades of grey in

the original image to shades of grayish blue. The brush style was then changed to one of the charcoal brushes. This image has a somewhat chaotic feel and looses its ability to show the pop can. However, I like the way the background looks and the movement in the can is very dynamic.
