ERWIN LEE - URBAN DESIGN AND ARCHITECTURE PORTFOLIO
Conceptual Design Programs Used: Rhino, Autocad, Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign This development will create a complete community by seamlessly integrating a mix of residential, senior’s living, commercial, retail, leisure, office, and hotel spaces that allow residents to age in place within the neighbourhood. A high-quality public realm, with mews streets throughout, will create an attractive and vibrant destination that promotes active living and alternative modes of transportation. I assisted with the development of the concept plan. I am also primarily responsible for the graphics and revision of the Urban Design Report.

Conceptual Design Programs Used: Autocad This project aims to redevelop a current golf course site into a residential development with a variety of lot sizes. The site will feature a range of single lots, oversized single lots, premium lots, country lots, and apartment buildings to help densify the suburban neighbourhood. Additionally, the development will try to refrain from intruding on the existing properties that are on the golf course with additional entrances into the site. I was responsible for developing the initial concept plan and revising the layout based on comments from the senior planner and senior designer on the project team. AERIAL MAP

Conceptual Design Programs Used: SketchUp, Autocad, Photoshop This concept examines the potential to redevelop a current high school site into a residential development centered around a community hub. With three development options providing different densities, the site will feature a range of single home, semi-detached home, townhome, back-to-back townhome, and back-to-back stacked townhome building types to help densify the suburban neighbourhood. I was responsible for developing multiple concept plan options and creating the rendered plans, 3D massings, and perspective views. NORTH-EAST VIEW

Demonstration Plan + Urban Design Guidelines Programs Used: Rhino, SketchUp, Autocad, Illustrator, Photoshop This demonstration plan is part of a larger master plan, which aims to guide the transformation of a large site in Ottawa from a traditional employment centre to a vibrant, mixed-use neighbourhood. I helped develop the master plan, rendered plan, axonometric drawing, and perspective view to be used as part of the demonstration plan package. The graphics focus on the pedestrian mid-block crossing, as well as the sustainable design and technology employed in each block. Additionally, I assisted in preparing and revising the Urban Design Guidelines to be used for the development of the site. PERSPECTIVE VIEW OF PEDESTRIAN MEWS

Community Design Plan Programs Used: Autocad, Illustrator, InDesign This Community Design Plan establishes a land use planning framework for the East Urban Community (EUC) Phase 3 Area in Ottawa under the Ontario Planning Act. This plan for development provides a livable community based on: a Land Use Plan, Demonstration Plan, Area Park Plan (APP), servicing and transportation infrastructure plans, and design guidelines. It is envisioned that the EUC Phase 3 Area will be a hub of activity for the residents of OrlĂŠans and surrounding communities. Its mix of housing, shop and commercial services, combined with leisure and recreational opportunities will make it an attractive place to live, work, and play. With its compact form, mix of uses, and strong orientation towards walking, cycling, and transit, the CDP area will be a model of sustainable design and development. I am responsible for creating the various maps and graphics under the guidance of the senior planner and developer.

Urban Design Rationale Programs Used: SketchUp, Autocad, Illustrator, InDesign This proposed development in Kingston envisions a 10-storey mixed-use building that includes retail/commercial and amenity space on Princess Street and Albert Street, with townhouses on Frontenac Street. On the upper floors, a mix of residential units is provided, including bachelor / studios, and units ranging from 1 to 4 bedrooms. Internal amenity space is provided on every level, with a large outdoor amenity space above the 4th Floor. At Princess Street and Frontenac Street, a parcel of land is identified for future parkland dedication. A continuous, 4-storey (13.5 metre) podium is provided on Princess Street. I prepared the different diagrams, maps, and sections of writing for the Urban Design Rationale.

Presentation Boards + Diagrams Programs Used: Autocad, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign Many of the projects I have worked on require presentation boards and diagrams, whether it be for public meetings or workshops, open houses, or OMB / LPAT tribunals. These are a few examples of the presentation boards I have helped prepare, which include boards for a Community Engagement Workshop for the First Unitarian Church of Ottawa, Open House boards for the Elmvale Acres redevelopment in Ottawa, Open House boards for the East Urban Community development in Ottawa, and a shadow study for a meeting with Kingston city staff.

Shadow Studies
MARCH/SEPTEMBER 21 (SPRING/FALL EQUINOX)
The following shadow studies demonstrates the shadow impacts of the proposed development during the Spring/Fall Equinox, and the Winter and Summer Solstice. Due to its location on the north side of Princess Street, the development does not cast any shadows on this street.
/
While shadows are cast north of the development, they are generally present for brief periods. Additionally, because the site is a through-lot density was able to be relocated to the centre of the site, mitigating shadow impacts on the adjacent properties and Queen Street.
/
/
The proposed building has no impact on Princess Street on March/September 21. Sydenham Street west of the proposed development is impacted by shadows from 9:00am - 12:00pm. This still allows for a substantial amount of continuous sunlight in the afternoon (5+ hours). Shadows impact the south side of Queen Street for the majority of the day. However, the shadows mostly fall on the street itself. The proposed 45 degree angular plane mitigates additional shadow impact, minimizes shadows on the north side, and allows full sun access for future development.
/
/
The properties north of Queen Street are not impacted by the shadows that are cast until 12:00pm to 5:00pm, with only minimal shadow impacts that allow for abundant sun exposure throughout most of the day. Two buildings immediately east of the site are impacted by shadows from 4:00pm onwards, but still receive significant amount of sun during the day (5+ hours).

Scenes from Suburbia: Unreal Strategies for Real Change Thesis - Third Year Masters Programs Used: Rhino, Autocad Scenes from Suburbia: Unreal Strategies for Real Change reimagines the suburbs as a “landscape of dreams” in order to develop an alternate vision – for intrinsically the suburbs are tied to dreams of homeownership and community. Illustrations and short narratives informed by surrealism and speculative imagination provide the tools through which to investigate possible new futures for the paradigmatic suburb. In a realm between practicality and fantastical vision, these depictions strive to reveal the suburbs’ latent potential to become relational landscapes providing dwellers with orientation in the world, and a sense of connection to community, city and environment. Reimagining the suburbs infuses everyday life for suburban residents with delight and surprise.

Philosophy and Theology in the Contemporary City Gateway Studio - Third Year Masters Programs Used: Rhino, V-Ray, Autocad, Photoshop This project is the expansion and consolidation of the campus of the Dominican University College (DUC) - an affiliate of Carleton University with a focus on philosophy and theology. Adjacent to downtown and the new Lebreton Flats development, the DUC is in Chinatown / Little Italy, located near Empress Avenue and Somerset Street West. The DUC is a well-established institution within a changing community. The adaptive reuse program is an expanded library and a new classroom / conference facility that culturally and academically articulates the on-going scholastic mission of the DUC.

In Search of The Miraculous DSA Lisbon - Second Year Masters Programs Used: Rhino, V-Ray, Autocad, Photoshop This project is located in Cabo Espichel, which is less than an hour away from Lisbon, Portugal. Cabo Espichel stands on a high cliff overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, with a breathtaking view. It is a place of archaeological remains, religious cults, and until today, a pilgrimage destination. While barren and austere, it comprises an assorted ensemble of constructions including a chapel, a church, a dormitory, a reservoir, and a lighthouse. A project for such a site should be precise and “acupunctural, dealing sensibly with heritage and landscape. The program for this project includes a bus stop, a residence for artists, an art school and a museum dedicated to the oeuvre of Dutch artist Bas Jan Ader. Constructed primarily of glass and steel, three pavilions are designed to be a light and transparent addition, offering
