The beginning and starting point of Erwin Van den Brande’s works are images, movies, objects and scenes from everyday life that amaze, inspire or bring him piece of mind. It is all about man’s quest for tranquillity, aestheticism, for “being” instead of “doing”, for confirmation and structure in our life. This often reveals humanity’s pettiness and a sense of absurdity. Erwin Van den Brande’s images intend to derive reality of its context and thus render it timeless. He portrays reality as he experiences it, not as he or we see it. This allows him to distance himself from the actual world and from society. The images’ aim is to create an idyll and a utopia: a space for reflection, contemplation and tranquillity. A stimulus to daydream. The common thread through his work is nostalgia, with which he connects the “past” to the “present”. This nostalgia is emphasized both thematically and formally. For example, by means of reusing existing images, desaturating colours, playing with focus and highlighting elements from the past. Digital collages complete this by using the various aspects of a topic in one image. Erwin Van den Brande’s images have a clear and defined line, are abstract and focus on the essence. The colours are desaturated to combine the strengths of both colour and black-white pictures. With their vast aesthetic appeal, Erwin Van den Brande’s images want to take the spectator on a journey of reflection and contemplation.

THE WORLD THAT SURROUNDS US

"Sometimes its necessary to take ourselves out of the stress and worries of everyday life, the rituals of work and deadlines, bills and future plans and see the world for what it is, a place outside human interference that can offer us a small measure of peace and tranquility. And that is what Erwin Van den Brande has done in these photographs from his series ‘The World That Surrounds Us”. This collection of pictures look to decontextualise familiar scenes in order to make them timeless, captivating, a respite from the modern world, from consumerism and cultural dictatorships. It’s an attempt to create an idyll, an open space for contemplation, rest, peace, a sort of zen garden in which we can lose ourselves in the moment without care for the past or future. To this end the photographs are simple. They want to transport us to a place we can never reach, they are a view of an impossibility that we can glimpse at but never grasp. They appeal to our suffering but torture us in their reflective glory. This duality makes them difficult to look at for the longer you wallow in their aura the more likely you are to fall short, count your shortcomings, take residence in the worst aspects of your life. So tread carefully. Rest easy. Breathe deep."

THE RULES OF THE GAME

"I have always been intrigued by how lines control our lives on the road, on a parking, an airport, museums, sport etc.. We all know the meaning of those lines very well. We just need to see a few lines and we realize what they mean, where they are coming from. Therefore I have made a collection of very abstract images about lines in sports and on our roads. In my search for lines I was impressed on how many spots we can find around us where people can play their game between the lines." Quote Erwin Van den Brande

DIGITAL DEGENERATION

What would happen if you take a print of a picture, scan it to your computer and then upload it to different social media, download it on your mobile device, upload it to other social media, take print screen, upload it again and so on... ? The images tend to loose quality and fade away like our memories fade away with time. We still have the photographic negatives of the pictures we have made with analogue devices in the seventies and we still can print them perfectly and razor sharp. Since we use digital photography, we all have lost images or some pictures are reduced in quality. What will still be there in 100 years of all those images stored on the Internet, social or digital media? Will they still be sharp and will they still have the same color?

WATER SKYLINES

An avid collector of the work of the artist asked him to take some images of the coast and its sea. The images had to be both nostalgic and peaceful. Besides that, the images needed to be powerful and illustrate the vastness of the sea. Even though upon first glance the images appears effortless, there is more to it than meets the eye initially.

THE GREAT WAR: 1914-2018

The Yser Tower is a memorial along the Belgian Yser river in Diksmuide. The tower standing tall this day is a rebuild of the original. The first tower was built after the First World War but was illegally demolished with dynamite in 1946. Several years later, a new and higher tower was built on the same place. The rebuilt tower (84 m) is the highest peace monument in Europe. The Yser Tower symbolizes the demand for “No More War", enscribed into the tower in the four languages of the fighting forces in that area during the First World War (1914-18). The Yser Tower site is also the burial place of some of the Flemish soldiers killed on the battlefield. These soldiers have become examples and heroes for Flanders. The Yser Tower houses a museum on War, Peace, and Flemish Emancipation, that belongs to the United Nations network of peace museums. During visit of the artist the tour guide asked a group of 10 year old youngsters if they knew where chemical weapons were being used in the world at this moment in time. Surprisingly they all knew where. Then the guide explained that during the First World War, in this region, chemical weapons were used for the first ever time in history. We have to realize that is was exactly 100 years ago. Outside the artist took this picture in the trenches that were used in WW I.

NOSTALGIA BY VIEW-MASTER

Nostalgia is a sentimentality for the past, typically for a period or place with happy personal associations. The word nostalgia is learned formation of a Greek compound, consisting of νόστος (nóstos), meaning "homecoming", a Homeric word, and ἄλγος (álgos), meaning "pain, ache", and was coined by a 17th-century medical student to describe the anxieties displayed by Swiss mercenaries fighting away from home. Described as a medical condition—a form of melancholy—in the Early Modern period, it became an important trope in Romanticism. Nostalgia can refer to a general interest in the past, its personalities, and events, especially the "good old days" from earlier in one's life. The scientific literature on nostalgia usually refers to nostalgia regarding the personal life and has mainly studied the effects of nostalgia induced during the studies. Smell and touch are strong evokers of nostalgia due to the processing of these stimuli first passing through the amygdala, the emotional seat of the brain. These recollections of one's past are usually important events, people one cares about, and places where one has spent time. Music[ and weather can also be strong triggers of nostalgia. Nostalgic preferences, the belief that the past was better than is the present, has been linked to biases in memory. Although nostalgia is often triggered by negative feelings, it results in increasing one's mood and heightening positive emotions, which can stem from feelings of warmth or coping resulting from nostalgic reflections. One way to improve mood is to effectively cope with problems that hinder one's happiness. Batcho (2013) found that nostalgia proneness positively related to successful methods of coping throughout all stages—planning and implementing strategies, and reframing the issue positively. These studies led to the conclusion that the coping strategies that are likely among nostalgia prone people often lead to benefits during stressful times. Nostalgia can be connected to more focus on coping strategies and implementing. them, thus increasing support in challenging times.

Nostalgia by View Master - The Fermi Paradox Digital Collage

The Fermi paradox is the apparent contradiction between the lack of evidence and high probability estimates for the existence of extraterrestrial civilizations. This paradox was made by physicists Enrico Fermi (1901–1954) and Michael H. Hart (born 1932). One of the arguments for this paradox is that technological civilizations may usually or invariably destroy themselves before or shortly after developing radio or spaceflight technology. Possible means of annihilation are many, including war, accidental environmental contamination or damage, resource depletion, climate change or poorly designed artificial intelligence.

Nostalgia by View Master - #Metoo Mixed Media

Erwin Van den Brande responds to a current trend he's observed, namely the timidity around nakedness and sexuality, which stands in stark contrast to the sexual revolution of the 1960s. Using vintage View Master images and nude images he created himself, he calls this prudery and voyeurism of 2018 into question.

MUSE OR DAY-DREAM ?

As a verb, to muse is to consider something thoughtfully. As a noun, it means a person — especially a woman — who is a source of artistic inspiration. In mythology, the Muses were nine goddesses who symbolized the arts and sciences. Today, a muse is a person who serves as an artist's inspiration. Often filmmakers talk about a certain actor being a muse — meaning the actor inspired a movie. Writers, painters, musicians, and other artists have muses. Muse can also refer to thinking deeply. If you muse about something, you're giving it serious thought. You can't muse in five seconds. People muse on certain ideas for years.

"LE MEPRIS"

American film producer Jeremy Prokosch (Jack Palance) hires respected Austrian director Fritz Lang (playing himself) to direct a film adaptation of Homer's Odyssey. Dissatisfied with Lang's treatment of the material as an art film, Prokosch hires Paul Javal (Michel Piccoli), a novelist and playwright, to rework the script. The conflict between artistic expression and commercial opportunity parallels Paul's sudden estrangement from his wife Camille Javal (Brigitte Bardot), who becomes aloof with Paul after he leaves her alone with Prokosch, a millionaire playboy. While founded on Alberto Moravia's story of the progressive estrangement between a husband and wife, Godard's version also contains deliberate parallels with aspects of his own life: while Paul, Camille, and Prokosch correspond to Ulysses, Penelope, and Poseidon, respectively, they also correspond in some ways with Godard, his wife Anna Karina (his choice of female lead), and Joseph E. Levine, the film's distributor. At one point Bardot dons a black wig, which gives her a resemblance to Karina. Michel Piccoli also bears some resemblance to Brigitte Bardot's exhusband, the filmmaker Roger Vadim.

"MARIE-ANTOINETTE" INSPIRED BY SOFIA COPPOLA

"Marie-Antoinette" is a 2006 historical comedy-drama film, written and directed by Sofia Coppola and starring Kirsten Dunst. The film is based on the life of the Queen in the years leading up to the French Revolution. It won the Academy Award for Best Costume Design. In several 2006 interviews, Coppola suggests that her highly stylized interpretation was intentionally very modern in order to humanize the historical figures involved. She admitted taking great artistic liberties with the source material, and said that the film does not focus simply on historical facts – "It is not a lesson of history. It is an interpretation documented, but carried by my desire for covering the subject differently." The film received both applause and some boos during early Cannes Film Festival press screenings, which one reviewer supposes was because some of the French journalists may have been offended that the film was not sufficiently critical of the rÊgime's decadence.

GLOBAL CITIZENSHIP FOR THE ANTWERP MANAGEMENT SCHOOL

As a result of living in a globalized world we see we have an added layer of responsibility. We also are responsible for being members of a world community faced with problems that no single country by itself can solve. The major challenge that we have is to build a sustainable values-based world community that can solve the global issues we all face. What might our community’s values be? They are the values that world leaders have been advocating for the past 75 years, including human rights, religious pluralism, gender equity, environmental protection, sustainable development, poverty alleviation, the prevention and cessation of conflicts between countries, the elimination of weapons of mass destruction, humanitarian assistance, and the preservation and celebration of cultural diversity." source: Global Citizen Initiative. Global Citizenship and is one of the pillars of Antwerp Management School. The background of the artwork is a world map made up of old stamps of traveling passports. This should make us feel that it is about our planet. The stamps refer to the national way of thinking. The "degradÊ" on the background should show the viewer that the usage of those stamps is the past and that we should move towards a global citizenship. In the foreground you can see pieces from passports from different countries. It must show us that we are still part of a country, culture, race, and religion, which is important because it gives meaning to our existence, and will shape us further. But without land-stamps because we need to think more globally. The artist has chosen images from passports that represent nature. Because nature is our most important asset we have on our planet. Some images feel more spiritual because spirituality should help us in our path to Global Citizenship, and in the pursuit of its values. The pieces from the passports are globes or spheres. This gives the idea of planets in the universe. From left to right: Macao, Turkey, Mexico, China, Tajikistan, Thailand, US, Norway, Belgium and UK.

WORLD WIDE ART PROJECT FOR ABBVIE

Abbvie - the pharmaceutical company - asked the artist and a few dozen other artists worldwide to create an artwork about a patient with hepatitis C. With this initiative Abbvie wants to put the impact of this disease on a patient's life in the spotlight. The patient assigned to the artist didn't want to be recognizable, as he was ashamed of his condition. Spirituality helps him to look on the bright side and help him deal with his fear, guilt and shame. As all of us, his story is still unfinished as his future still needs to be written.

WHEN EMOTIONS BLUR AWAY

Research shows us that images when they become blurred produce a different and often stronger emotion. Shooting blurred photos can be considered opposite of black and white photography - while black and white is about hiding colors to bring out shapes and shadows, blurring helps to reveal colors by hiding shapes and shadows. Blurred images have an effect on our emotions and how we interprete images. Blured images gives us a feeling of mind-boggling motion. They evoke memories because colors and shapes alone can trigger some memories stronger than same image with details. Because only the colors and shapes match memories of other people, not the details. Blured images also initiate curiosity. Since blured images also can suggest that someone is leaving they can generate nostalgic feelings. An interesting subcategory is a combination of the opposites: black&white blured images - where distractions by both details and colors are hidden away to bring out larger shapes or patterns. I prefer to work with desaturation of colors, where the strenghth of both - black&white and colors - are combined.

Erwin Van den Brande works and lives in Antwerp, Belgium. His work is described as Universal, timeless, yet modern and refined. His imagery entices the observer, allowing the observer to dwell upon the image, without infringing on the aesthetics. At the early age of 17 years old, Erwin Van den Brande was already a photographer. As many 70’s youths he was confronted with the budding medium that was photography. As so many others, he discovered the joys of having his own dark room. Albeit in those days his areas of interest were typically rock concerts and holiday photography, he was awarded various prizes. In that respect Erwin Van den Brande was ranked 2nd during the Procter&Gamble competition for best “Dreft” advert and he won a photography competition pertaining to old buildings in Mechelen by entering a photo collage. During a lengthy period, for various reasons, photography was placed on the back burner. More than 2 decades later photography was taken up again and Erwin Van den Brande enrolled himself in a photography school in Antwerp. He was subsequently, once again, captivated by photography and found inspiration from contemporary photographers from the 60’s and 70’s. Erwin Van den Brande enjoys frequenting photography expositions and a yearly trip to the Photo Festival in Arles (France) has become a tradition. The future of photography mainly interests him: how will photography evolve in the coming years, what will be the impact of digital processing, how will other art forms affect photography? Additionally questions pertaining to aesthetics: what makes a photograph attractive, how do other cultures in other countries view photography?

The beginning and starting point of Erwin Van den Brande’s works are images, movies, objects and scenes from everyday life that amaze, inspire or bring him piece of mind. It is all about man’s quest for tranquillity, aestheticism, for “being” instead of “doing”, for confirmation and structure in our life. This often reveals humanity’s pettiness and a sense of absurdity. Erwin Van den Brande’s images intend to derive reality of its context and thus render it timeless. The images’ aim is to create an idyll and a utopia: a space for reflection, contemplation and tranquillity. A stimulus to daydream. The common thread through his work is nostalgia, with which he connects the “past” to the “present”. This nostalgia is emphasized both thematically and formally. The colours are desaturated to combine the strengths of both colour and black-white pictures. With their vast aesthetic appeal, Erwin Van den Brande’s images want to take the spectator on a journey of reflection and contemplation.
