Sushmitha Bommidi a Hyderabad based Fashion Stylist/Designer with an under Graduation in Bachelor of Design (Fashion) B.DES from KIIT University, Bhubaneshwar. Currently working as a Design & Production Coordinator for Brand ‘Kaluva by Neeraja Kona’. She started as a freelance stylist working on weekends & on free time which got her into movies as a costume designer, later assisted Neeraja Kona in styling for a couple of Tollywood movies and celebrity promotional shoots & events. She even works as a visiting faculty at Bonfire institute of design, Hyderabad. Recently worked with Dharma Teja Jastigaru (Director) for his upcoming web series as a stylist with Nandini Rai as the lead, one more web series of Nandini Rai with Bharani KDharan. What Fashion Styling is & What Fashion Stylist work involves? A Fashion Stylist works for individuals, fashion houses, celebrities, and clothing brands. Their core domain includes professional fashion consultation, choosing and coordinating outfits for models in photo shoots and actors in television and film, choosing props and accessories and preparing them for shoots. A major part of the job involves planning what would look good on celebrity/client, deciding from where to buy or hire these dresses and accessories depending on the budget, bringing them to the shoot and dressing up the actors. They generate the kind of image that the newspapers, magazines or advertising agencies wish to portray. Simply its managing everything that brings out fashion.

Stylists can provide a wide range of services which includes Personal Styling/Celebrity Styling, Editorial Styling, Wardrobe Styling, Commercial Styling, Corporate Styling, Catalogue Styling, fashion Show Styling, Photographic Styling, Product/ Merchandise Styling. Climbing out from the glossy pages of magazine editorials, the cult of the stylist was in full effect. But behind the scenes jobbing stylists, usually vulnerable freelancers with little security and backache from lugging clothes and accessories around town, a stylist reconfigures garments in new harmonies for clients hungry for something different.

Styling Tips by Sushmita: Know your body type and shop

Pear-Shaped If you are having a pear shaped body draw attention to your upper body and distract from the wider bottom. A well-fitted top with a big bow or bright colors, shoulder pads, ruffle tops, short cardigan can work. Paneled, pencil, straight skirts are advisable. Wear wide-legged pants and avoid skinny fit or thigh pockets.

Rectangle-Shaped If your body type is rectangle try to add definition to your chest and body. Play with diverse cuts, prints, textures, colors and details, with your shape you can rock a variety of looks. Jackets, any tops, dresses, sweetheart necks, bustier and v-necks can work great. Belts will be best wardrobe investment, hip-length jackets/blazers, flirty skirt styles, pencil or flared skirts can be experimented. Avoid crop tops, square necks, baggy or boxy tunics.

If you are an apple-shaped person elongate the torso, draw attention to the legs to create the illusion of a waist. Opt for structured pieces as they will add definition and hide the extra weight. Invest on V and wide necks, knee-length A-line skirts, wrap dress, flared bottom, boot cut straight-legged jeans. Avoid high waist, shapeless, boxy, gathers tops/ dresses. Hourglass Shaped If you have an hourglass body highlight your natural curves and proportionally balance both upper and lower body at the same time. Flaunt your well-defined waist. Invest in scoop, sweetheart, halter and V necks, peplum tops, A-line, full circle skirts, belts to accentuate the waist, boot cut, and straight-legged pants are suitable. Keep away from high necks, low rise jeans, boxy tops, volume-enhancing details like ruffles and bows. Now that you know your body types and can balance the proportions. Let’s get into a few styling ideas. Own classics; leather/Denim jackets Classics like these are timeless, and every girl needs them in her closet. They come in handy all through the year in one way or another. Denims are must & forever in trend. Even if you are switching to a capsule wardrobe, you need these. Look 1: A printed dress, classic denim jacket, black leather cross bag, cool sneakers, sunglasses. Look 2: black blouse and slip skirt, black heels, red crossbody bag, denim jacket. Elegance/Classic Chic The elegant fashion style displays unusual effectiveness and simplicity. Elegant outfits are high-quality, chic, classy, sophisticated, timeless, and smart. They compliment your features perfectly. It is an elegant and easy-going fashion style with classic and feminine clothes. It’s a perfect combination to look stylish and laid-back with timeless and sophisticated pieces. Modern, simple, and it includes classic shapes, clean cuts, and androgynous silhouettes. This kind of look makes you look quite a hippie and gipsy and that is what it stands for. The classic bohemian look has always been a standout thing and is kind of every girl’s favourite as the focus is on chains, fringes, and other eye-catching accessories.

Sexy Style This is a way of dressing where you show a lot of skin and get lots and lots of eyeballs at you. You look sensual and hot. In this style of fashion, you wear clothes to accentuate your figure and highlight your bodily assets in the best possible way. You can even experiment by draping a piece of fabric in different styles using safety pins and belts or can be knotted to secure them.
