We are full swing into Spring; there is no better time to be outside and kickstart your new cardio routine. Not all cardio is the same – if fact, there are three categories of cardio. Which is right for you?

High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT)

This consists of alternating between bursts of activity and timed rest periods Exercises include plyometrics or explosive strength training movements Think sprints, push-ups, and jump rope HIIT has become popular since you can build and preserve muscle while getting cardio at the same time These workouts do not take much time but will require more recovery

Moderate-Intensity Steady State (MISS)

This is the most popular type of cardio and includes any activity that keeps your heart rate in the 140-160 bpm range for a period of time Jogging, elliptical, rowing, and cycling are just a few activities that fit this category These activities can burn a lot of calories but carry a risk of burning muscle tissue for fuel

Low-Intensity Steady State (LISS)

This type of cardio keeps your heart rate in the 100-130 bpm range and has the highest potential for fat burning It does not tax the nervous system, helps to reduce stress, and requires little recovery time

All types of cardio have excellent benefits for your overall health. To determine which is best for you, you need to begin with the end in mind. If someone ’ s goal is to complete a triathlon vs. wanting to lose weight, there will be different approaches to cardio. Remember that a cardio routine is not a standalone training program. Cardio should be part of a comprehensive strength training program that supports your lifestyle and gets you closer to your goal.
