COURSE MAINTENANCE David

The month of May did have its challenges, starting off cooler than normal delaying grass growing, followed by heavy rains and flooding conditions that spanned a week. We are finally ending the month on great grass growing and playing conditions Let’s enjoy it while it lasts, as summer is here and not going anywhere anytime soon

I am happy to announce that our maintenance staff is the largest it’s been in several years This has really begun to show on the property All cart paths were edged and cleaned to start the month out This will be a process that will be completed monthly Other details completed this month were flymowing and edging all bunkers, tee sign beds, and we began edging all trees near month’s end All of our fairways, collars, approaches, and tees were sprayed with their first growth regulator application of the season, along with some fertility All roughs on both courses were treated as well As a reminder, growth regulator is applied to all surfaces on the course Not only does it slow horizontal growth of the turf but promotes more lateral growth and strengthens the turf to tolerate more wear and tear when applied at the optimal rates

All tee boxes were evaluated and reshaped back to an appropriate size and direction in correlation to landing areas They are just about healed and are looking much better We will do the same process to all collars, approaches, and fairways in the month of June The sod we planted at the end of April is doing great These areas are close to being established We are currently prepping a few more areas for sod on North #6 collar and North #7 fairway In June, more sod will be added to needed areas, and lots of mowing and detail work.

Lastly, a friendly reminder to repair all ball marks, sand divots, and adhere to the blue stake rule and all stake and ropes on the course These practices go a long way in preserving the courses and are greatly appreciated by the maintenance staff

Hopefully you have had a chance to see the ProDown videos we have been putting together, where I am taking on Members in a one-hole golf match While I have been successful thus far, I have so much respect for the guys I have faced and truly enjoyed the experience of playing with them Looking forward to my next match against Kevin Tobias. I had the chance to play on his team in the STPGA Pro-Pro-Am-Am in Lake Charles and I know he has game so it will be a challenge to remain undefeated With that said, it is a challenge I am looking forward to.
