COURSE MAINTENANCE

John Freeman

The month of May was brutal as we received close to 10 inches of rain in 17 days Heavy downpours destroyed our bunkers on three different occasions Bunker restoration has taken a toll on our crew, but they are committed to full restoration This process begins with removing silt and debris Fortunately, we use bunker machines with hydraulic push blades to move sand from low areas back up the slopes We must then manually distribute the sand with hand rakes Mechanical rakes are used to break up and level the sand in all areas once the manual work is done around the top edges With our labor tracking system, we have found it takes approximately 500 manhours to restore bunkers on both courses We would much rather use this time to detail the property
June is a busy month for golf course maintenance here at Golf Club of Houston Greens aerification of all 47 greens will be our major focus Hopefully, we will have mild weather, no rain, and sunshine to make our job much easier, allowing for better results The process will include 3X vertical mowing at approximately 1/8 inch depth, mowing and blowing debris, aerifying with 7/16 inch coring tines, sweeping up cores, top dress heavy enough to fill 90% of the holes, brushing sand into holes (3X), blow off debris, apply gypsum and turn on the water Potentially follow up with light sanding to fill holes that settle out after irrigation And finally, apply long-chain carbon fertilizer (nitrogen plus potassium) to enhance recovery We will monitor the moisture in the root zone daily to ensure optimum moisture is available to enhance recovery
For the first time in over a year, Willie and I have an almost full staff. We are still looking for an Assistant Mechanic. We are spending many hours training the new employees, and most are doing OK. Guiding our staff and the weather are two of our biggest challenges. Fortunately, our equipment is dependable except for normal wear and tear. Please bear with us as we continue to push the crew to “aim for perfection” in every maintenance task.
