Course Maintenance

John Freeman

In April, Golf Course Maintenance becomes extremely busy and aggressive with Agronomic practices Winter weeds are entering the final stages of their life cycle Summer weeds are continuing to germinate Our team has been working diligently to ensure we have post emerge herbicides where needed We are also on a mission to apply multiple light applications of pre-emerge herbicide to our entire property Our goal is to be weed-free from January to December Overall, we have been moderately successful The number one winter weed in the whole world is Poa Annua (annual bluegrass) We have kept it out of putting surfaces and, in most short, grass In some areas, rough grass could be better The poa germinated in thatch and has survived without having any root structure in the soil We will get aggressive with aerification and thatch removal as soon as possible

Winter has not been kind to putting surfaces in our area Many of my friends in the industry are experiencing the same challenges I am We are working daily to enhance the recovery of both Tif-Eagle and Mini-Verde We are increasing the frequency and rates of nutrients and bio-stimulants Additional practices to improve oxygen and water movement are also critical to recovery We are micromanaging these practices We are sodding areas where necessary As of April 20, we still need warmer nights and consistent sunlight to enhance overall course conditions

The carbon fertilizer is doing what it always does Salts are being buffered, and tees and fairways are much healthier Recovery is coming along nicely I was disappointed with the manufacturer of the Viatrac 3-3-3 They decided to produce a pellet instead of a crumble, and it took over a week to melt down vs a couple of days with the crumble I let the manufacturer know that the product would not be used again in the pellet form

We are still in line for bunker sand for both courses The manufacturers in Arkansas and California have yet to give a delivery date as of mid-April We hope to be notified of a date soon and will keep you updated once we receive more information

I want to extend a big "Thank you" to Mark Bond He modified six wood duck boxes in our storage area and has installed them in the swamps and back side of lakes on the Tournament Course Watching the Wood duck population grow in our water features will be nice Every bluebird box is occupied, and the Martin houses are fully occupied Thanks again to Mark for this nice touch
