irst and foremost, I hope you’re staying safe and taking care—these are undeniably trying times. Since you’re reading this, there’s a good chance you already believe in the power of print media. In the midst of this global pandemic, we all need upbeat, positive mediums to help ease isolation, stay connected to our community and search out lighter moments and laughter. Our goal at Escarpment® has always been to be an irreplaceable tool for local businesses and non-profits who need to stay connected with their customers and communities—this has never been truer than it is now. Small, local businesses are taking a huge financial hit this spring, with retail and hospitality being amongst the worst affected. It’s important we band together to help support independent businesses as best we can. So how can we help? Purchasing a gift card is a manifestation of customer loyalty, as every purchase made is a guarantee of a future visit. Many businesses are offering E-commerce, phone orders and pickup/delivery on everything from ready-made meals to beer to diamond rings (thank you D.C Taylor Jewellers!).
We have set up a page on escarpmentmagazine.ca that lists how local businesses are continuing to service Simcoe, Grey and Bruce Counties—we welcome your additions! As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, so too does the response of various local health care workers, hospital staff, emergency services and countless others—we are thankful for their hard work and dedication to supporting all of us through this very difficult time. I wish everyone the best of health and I join you in looking forward to the end of these difficult days. But for now, let’s remain vigilant and thoughtful of others as together we celebrate Spring on the Escarpment.

e began working on this issue in early January. Much of the content was already decided on, and contributors were hard at work crafting their stories, editing photos and cramming in last minute adjustments before our March first submission deadline. On the publishing side, this magazine was going through a major change. Deena Dolan Findlay—the driving force behind Escarpment Magazine for 21 years— officially retired after the Winter issue. It was around this time that I realized Deena had done far more than just “put the magazine together”. Simply put, a “Graphic Designer” wasn’t going to cut it—we needed a “Super Art Director, Graphic Designer, Photo Editor, Creative Genius and Publisher Hand-Holder” all-in-one. While we were finishing Deena’s last issue, Deena had a chance encounter with Susan Meingast, a Thornbury local with a plethora of magazine experience. Deena immediately recognized Susan’s incredible artistic talent, keen eye, and passion for print media. She was introduced to the rest of the team and we knew instinctively, that Susan was our all-in-one candidate. Susan hit the ground running, and by late February we were well on our way. Then it happened… COVID-19. The community response to this pandemic has been nothing short of exceptional. Social distancing measures were adopted almost immediately. Many businesses quickly amended their services offering curb-side pickup, home delivery, 16 escarpmentmagazine.ca
and online shopping, while some local businesses have made the tough decision to cease operations in order to support the cause. Our community has come together to be “apart”. When the dust settles, our local businesses will need our support more than ever. These pages are packed with locally owned operations that are already feeling the economic pressure this pandemic has caused. I am thankful that they have decided to advertise with Escarpment Magazine—without them, this publication would not be possible. When their doors open again, please let them know that you appreciate their support as well. This issue also marks the first time an artist other than Deena has been featured on our cover. We are excited to introduce our readers to a different local artist each issue and we congratulate Jennifer Woodburn for being our first featured artist! We hope you enjoy reading about Jennifer’s journey, beginning on page 60. Fortunately the Escarpment Team was able to work remotely while pulling together the spring issue. It certainly wasn’t ideal with our recent changes, but our team rallied, much like our community. With most of our articles already completed, and due to the uncertainty about how long socialdistancing would last, we decided to stick with much of our original content, amending a few editorials to reflect the changing social climate. I am grateful to live in such a wonderful place with a strong social conscience. I am also thankful we found Susan. Under these circumstances, Deena is the only other person who could have pulled off such a beautiful issue. The Creative Director has retired. Long live the Creative Director.

In 2016 Escarpment Magazine publisher Deena Dolan Findlay initiated a four-year “phasing out” retirement plan... after stepping back her responsibilities, she stayed on as art director. t was a lingering winter day in 2001, when a glamourous woman in a long black fur coat trailing in the snow, came to our door, slightly late because of bad directions to our property. It was Deena Dolan Findlay, publisher and editor of Escarpment Magazine. It was the most enjoyed magazine in all the area around Georgian Bay. I had recently met Deena and warmed to her immediately. This woman had flare and magnetism galore. She was gorgeous and talented in more ways than I could know, even after several encounters. She had come for a photo shoot of our home for a feature in her magazine.

I guessed she had chosen this place we call Little Creek Wolf Range because it was newly built and a bit unusual in that it didn’t look new. I didn’t realize it had acquired some notoriety. Deena was unphased by our two big malamutes leaping up at her, vying for her attention and friendship. She showed no annoyance at the trouble in locating us. She produced from this one brief photo shoot a feature article that was artistic, lively, good humoured and colourful, a character revealing portrait of the good life on southern Georgian Bay. Those are also the long standing characteristics of her magazine. Though one should also add, smart and informative. Over the years, Deena established informative columns and articles on sports, Nancy Greene’s column on skiing, Dr. John Bowman’s column on sport medical practice, long time friend Phyllis Meiklejohn’s favourite recipes, plus articles on real estate, gardening, farming, small business Imagine trying to fill the shoes of the most talented person you know. in population and development of Southern Georgian Bay. Business is not without some nasty manoeuvres and sharp elbows. Deena knows how to defend what she values and, as her son Clay says, “double down” and make smart changes like moving to full colour, high quality gloss paper and expanded distribution. In 2006, she rebranded and trademarked the magazine to Escarpment to ensure its distinction. Confident but without egomania, Deena can let go and move on. She put her succession plan in place, selling the publisher rights to Clay who learned all about the publication after he was taken on as the talented photographer in 2006 at age 25. Deena appointed her daughter Cara, Editor-in-Chief after grooming her from the very first issue, using articles Cara wrote while living at Whistler. Confident in the abilities of Clay and Cara to take the magazine to new heights, off she goes into the next phase of her life — perfecting her art of painting, staying active, spending time with friends, family and grandchildren and making the most of life with her second husband Doug Findlay. explore. We were in a bit of a rut though visiting the same go-to trails and, while they were beautiful spots, we were keen to explore more of the escarpment and go on longer adventures. At the same time, we were often hearing from other women that they would love to get out more too but for various reasons didn’t—new to town and hadn’t met anyone to hike with, knew some trails but didn’t feel confident in navigating new ones, or just needed the added incentive of having people to get out with. A clear need was being identified and Nicole Kertcher, one of our crew, put out the idea of starting a womenspecific hike group for the region. A solid champion of community, Nicole had initiated something similar a couple years back; the Collingwood Ladies Ride
Crew, a facebook group that organized a weekly ladies trail ride. The group had made a significant impact on helping women grow their riding network so why not do something similar for the hiking community? The Collingwood Women’s Hike Crew, open to all women and femaleidentifying people, hosts group hikes at least once a month on a Saturday or Sunday morning. The hikes, led by Kertcher, Chloe Greenhalgh and myself, explore a different section of the Bruce Trail from Nottawasaga Bluffs and Kolapore, to Beaver Valley and Hoggs Falls. The summer hikes are roughly 10km and of moderate difficulty making them inclusive to a wide-range of women regardless of age, trail experience and s
And then another, and another. Soon the tent was crowded with a couple dozen women, voices animated and excited as they introduced themselves to each other. Nobody seemed to care about the downpour or the slightly cooler than normal temps on this early Saturday morning. The weather wasn’t going to put a damper on our plans. Clearly, we weren’t the only ones who had been looking forward to being part of something like this. The Collingwood Women’s Hike Crew started, as most ideas do, from a combination of personal desire and identifying a community need that had yet to be satisfied. In my own immediate circle, we had a solid crew of 4-5 women who got together often to hike, bike and

fitness level. You can expect to be out between 2-3 hours depending on the chosen trail and whether there are sections that we will want to stop and spend time exploring such as a waterfall or beautiful lookout. The group started with a commitment to host five hikes over the summer of 2019, but as the leaves began to turn there was a lot of interest in the hikes continuing so the group now hikes together year-round and has added some full-moon night hikes. Kertcher, the territory manager for Salomon footwear and bags, also had some ideas on how to make the initiative even more community oriented. At the hikes, members can demo Salomon hiking shoes and hydration packs, in turn supporting local shops Skiis & Biikes, VO2, Sporting Life, and Squire John’s who carry them. The summer hikes also showcase a local business that supports a healthy, active lifestyle— such as the Collingwood Kombucha Company who came with samples of their small-batch kombucha and talked about gut health. Members have also come together to support other women in our community— fulfilling a Christmas Wish List for a mom and daughter through My Friend’s House over the holidays, volunteering as hike leaders for the upcoming ‘Hike or Bike for Hospice’ event that supports the Georgian Triangle Hospice, and a ‘Gear Up’ outdoor clothing swap is in the works which will give members the opportunity to share their extra hiking equipment and technical clothing with other members who need them so everyone has the gear they need to get outside and explore. All hikes are managed through a Facebook group, and the hike details are also posted on Instagram. The idea with the Facebook group is that not only will people be able to come out for the organized group hikes, but the page is a forum for members to connect with each other to plan other hikes, meet other active and outdoorsy women, and build their play network. The group already has over 300 members and there is always room for more. As we waited for the last few people to arrive, the sky began to brighten and by the time we reached the trailhead the heavy raindrops had turned to a warm, light mist. 32 escarpmentmagazine.ca

After hosting a Rainbow Ski Weekend at Blue Mountain Village two years ago, Collingwood locals Andrew Siegwart and John Miller were struck by how many local LGBTQ people came to the festival—people of all ages, backgrounds and gender identities.

“A festival which will connect our entire community; to each other; with allies; in support of local businesses; integrating local service agencies and resources.”
“We heard from people that there were not always opportunities for the community to come together, meet new friends, find ‘queer-friendly’ resources and networks,” says Andrew. “The community was proud that Blue Mountain created this event just for them.” Soon afterwards Andrew and John launched The Rainbow Club, a grassroots social network for the LGBTQ Community in the South Georgian Bay and surrounding area. “Our events took the shape of nights out at local restaurants, games nights, outdoor outings as well as charitable events to raise money for local youth. We created an online community that is more than 500 members strong and a dynamic place to share information, ask questions, make connections and more. A pride event anchored in Collingwood emerged as our logical next step—a festival which will connect our entire community; to each other; with allies; in support of local businesses; integrating local service agencies and resources; as well as ensuring the visibility of our local LGBTQ Community’s needs.” Late last summer Andrew and John enlisted the help of Lori D’Agostino, an award-winning event production specialist, in planning the first-ever pride festival in Collingwood, July 17-18, 2020. Collingwood Pride will be a festival and celebration for everyone; including local and visiting lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, queer or questioning individuals and our collective friends, families and allies (LGBTQ+). It will be a weekend long celebration of our community’s diversity, vibrancy and strength. “LGBTQ youth still experience barriers and discrimination that others do not,” explains Andrew. “Diversity and inclusion strategies are needed and desired by local employers, health and support resources for parents of LGBTQ youth are not plentiful or easily found, queer positive gathering spaces for our community are needed, visibility and acceptance by local governments has been slow—as evidenced by how long it took to get a rainbow flag raised in Collingwood to celebrate Simcoe Pride. a quarantined fitness instructor to do? As we face our own social distancing, and how it relates to our mental and physical health, Public Health authorities are encouraging outdoor activities for healthy individuals—just as long as we give one another a wide berth. In addition to relieving some of the restlessness of being cooped up at home, moderate exercise contributes to good health, which in turn helps us maintain sturdy immune systems. Thankfully we happen to live in a place that boasts incredible nature walks, bike riding, hiking and trail running. One of my favourite hikes is Cascade Trail which begins at Blue Mountain’s South Base Lodge. This well-maintained path weaves through the forest, up natural and man-made steps, over timber bridges, alongside a babbling brook and culminates at the top of Blue Mountain Resort where you are rewarded with my favourite view on the Escarpment. Situated on the bendy road of Grey Road 119 the Blue Mountain Lookout gives a bird’s eye view of the Village at Blue below and Georgian Bay. On a clear day you can see as far as Wasaga Beach and Christian Island to the northeast, with the iconic Nottawasaga Lighthouse taking centre stage. Erected in 1858, the Nottawasaga Lighthouse was one of six Imperial Towers built to light the shores of Lake Huron and Georgian Bay. The whitewashed limestone structure rises 95 feet above the shore and is visible for miles. It played an important part in the establishment of safe navigation routes along the coastal waters of Lake Huron, guiding ships to safety in Collingwood Harbour. If you’re able to tear yourself away from the incredible view, Route 66 is a segment of the Bruce Trail that runs along the top of Blue Mountain and is used by hikers, runners and cyclists. Heading 42 escarpmentmagazine.ca
west from the top of the Silver Bullet Gondola, the Bruce trail continues past Swiss Meadows to Loree Forest and beyond. An easy jumping off point for more challenging mountain bike trails, this is a moderately used path so be prepared to see other people— remember to keep a distance of about six feet so everyone can enjoy a little exercise. If you’re in the mood for a seriously challenging workout, head to the far-south end of Blue—The Grind is a 219 m up-and-down hiking trail/uphill only cross country (xc) mountain bike trail, and boasts an average grade of 9.7%. Known as one of the most difficult climbs in Ontario, last year’s Sea Otter Festival featured “The Grind Challenge”, which offered xc mountain bike riders from around the globe the chance to usurp the virtual King and Queen of the Mountains (this refers to course records on Strava, the popular social network for athletes). Fitness classes and gyms are popular for a reason—leaving the house to exercise can provide a jolt of motivation and much needed cerebral breathing room. Exercise is also known for its mood-boosting abilities, and many of us could use a lift. For the foreseeable future working out is going to be an individual activity—thankfully the Escarpment is Mother Nature’s gym, with its natural stair climbers and endless treadmill of trails. We should all practice self-care and getting outside for a little fresh air and fun will have an immeasurable impact on our mental and physical health. We’re each going to have to sweat this one out on our own. Might as well take it outside. E *please check with brucetrail.org and bluemountain.ca for updates and closures due to COVID-19

Co-ed “modified contact” begins at U12, and “full contact” begins at U14, which is also the age at which genders are split. With dedicated and qualified coaches in each age division, the Titans’ mission is to teach the core skills of rugby in a fun and safe environment that promotes team play and respect. With a maximum of two practices a week during the May-August season (younger kids practice one night a week) the time commitment is relatively relaxed compared to other sports. U8 and U12 practice at Collingwood’s Legion Field, while U14, U16 and U18 train twice a week at the junior pitch at Harbourview Park. The Titans collaborate with other rugby clubs such as Fergus, Barrie, and Bruce County/Owen Sound— tournaments take place on weekends throughout the summer, with the pinnacle event, the Titans Minor Rugby Festival coming to Fisher Fields in Collingwood on Saturday, July 25. Titans President Sean Rennie and Vice-President Todd Hammond first met on the rugby pitch at University. “I went to Waterloo and Todd went to Laurier,” remembers Sean. “We were the cross-town rivals. Then we both moved to Collingwood and discovered we could work together to grow the sport.” Because
they are both teachers, Todd and Sean understand how children and teens benefit from playing a team sport such as rugby. “We wanted to make the club accessible to everybody,” says Todd. “For athletes who play other sports, rugby is a relatively short season. So, at the end of the summer you still have a month to get ready for your next sport, whether it be skiing, hockey, or whatever it may be.” By all accounts Rugby is a classic contact sport and the rules of the game are designed to prevent serious injuries. Concussions remain a serious concern and protocols have been put in place to ensure players safety. “Rugby is an honorable sport,” says Todd. “International rugby has been very proactive in regards to head injuries. Canada rugby has done an incredible job of addressing the style of play and safety on the field is the utmost priority.” “It’s not a blood sport,” adds Sean. We teach the proper contact technique, with logical progression. The goal is to get kids to tackle properly and safely. There is no head contact, tackling is done below the shoulders. We take a lot of pride in teaching the proper way to tackle—which is probably another reason why our teams have been so successful. You respect your opponents and that’s what is truly beautiful

unchanged for a century and a half. Canada won its first ever Olympic rugby medal at Rio 2016 when the women’s rugby sevens team captured bronze in their inaugural Olympic tournament, garnering the attention of Canadians, captivating fans and increasing the global popularity of rugby. Established in 2007 by Kirsty Stevenson, the Georgian Bay Titans Rugby Football Club’s numbers have risen steadily over its first 13 years but saw a clear bump after the 2016 Rio Olympics. Not only is rugby a great way to improve overall fitness, but it’s an easy way to make new friends and learn new skills. Based in Collingwood, the Georgian Bay Titans Rugby Club is the only rugby club in the Georgian Triangle and offers a variety of mixed gender for ages six through 18. In terms of fun, rugby ticks all the boxes—power, pace, hand-eye, physical collisions, evasive skills, and the games are quick. In its first season the Titans fielded three teams, with a membership of 60 players. The club has continued to grow, with more teams added each year and the introduction of a flag rugby program for younger players. The club now has over 180 members. Beginning at U8, children aged six and seven play “flag rugby” with an introduction to “contact rugby” in U10.

about the game—players take care of one another.” The Titans enjoy a close relationship with local service clubs like the Collingwood Optimists, participate in various community activities and have an ever-growing volunteer base. “We’ve done really well with our fundraisers, led by one of our rugby moms, Carrie Rhys,” says Sean. “Her ideas and the goals she set for the club are incredible. She managed to get the whole club to buy into events like the Titans Family Spaghetti Dinner and our ‘Beer Up’ fundraiser for the adults, which together have raised thousands of dollars. Fundraising has also allowed us to get proper equipment for the kids; proper flags; good balls; a new sign at the Harborview practice pitch. The Town of Collingwood has also supported us, giving us access to great fields. The Royal Canadian Legion in Collingwood has given us access to their pitch, and the Optimist Club of Collingwood gave us the start we needed for our ‘Mini Program’. If it wasn’t for them, we wouldn’t be where we are today.” “The coaches are also dedicated volunteers,” says Sean. “We always get comments on the seriousness of the coaching and the fact that they love coaching, which really shows on the field. It makes the sport about fun. We’re a competitive club but everyone gets to play. Up until junior rugby we don’t keep standings—it’s all about getting on the field and playing. Practices are based on small area games, learning 48 escarpmentmagazine.ca

skills then practicing those skills.” The inclusion of rugby in the Olympics has undoubtedly elevated the international profile of the sport and has caught the attention of Canadian families. “We have had several athletes from the Titans graduate into University programs,” says Todd. “The big push today is to create provincial teams. Last year we had six athletes make provincial teams. It’s exciting to see that progress. Our next real area of growth will be in girl’s rugby.” In the lead up to the 2016 Olympics, Rugby Canada reported that female rugby registrations increased by 26%. Unlike other Olympic sports like gymnastics, swimming and even golf, where either or both the set up and the specifics will vary depending on your gender, rugby has one set of rules for everyone—the women’s game is identical to the men’s game; rules; pitch; and ball size. “With women’s rugby on the world stage, we’re excited to see growth in our female rugby. One of our female athletes made the Ontario U16 sevens team.” Whether you want to play socially, have eyes on the Olympics, or fall somewhere in between, Rugby is a social sport with lifelong benefits. “Sean and I have both lived in Australia,” says Todd. “We’ve seen how rugby can make you a part of the community in any part of the world. And I know for my own children, when they got to play rugby in Australia, they immediately had twenty new friends. It’s a social sport that gives back to the players and their families.” In many locales it’s tradition for the home team to host a post-match meal. So, the opponent that scored on you will, after it’s all done, sit down and share a meal with you. And, unlike other sports where height or physiques automatically weed players out (think height in basketball, volleyball or gymnastics, speed and agility in soccer and track and field), in rugby there are positions for players of all sizes, shape and speed. Since rugby is typified by its versatility, athletes possess a blend of strength, agility, endurance and toughness. A Simple Concept: 100+ Women. $100. One hour = over $150,000 for local charities by Cara Williams
W MEN
WH
CARE
In August, 2017, seven women organized
s
themselves into a steering committee to create 100+ Women Who Care South Georgian Triangle. Their intent is simple, fun, and impactful; four times a year over a hundred women come together and write a check for $100. Their donations are then combined to make a big difference by giving +$10,000 to a local charity. The concept is so compelling that by the first meeting the group had over 110 members. Today membership is over 175 women. What a difference this group has made to the South Georgian Triangle community! In one-hour meetings, four times a year, they have donated over $150,000 directly into the hands of ten charitable organizations serving those in need from Meaford, Creemore, Wasaga Beach, Stayner, Collingwood, and more. Members of 100+ Women Who Care nominate charitable organizations they want to support and all nominations go into
a hat. Three charities are randomly drawn before each meeting. For each one, the nominating woman will have 10 minutes to make a brief presentation and handle any questions. Members then vote, and one charity is chosen for the group donation. Each member then writes a check (or donates online) for $100 to the chosen charity. The two charities presented who did not receive a donation are eligible for a subsequent meeting, and in the meantime have raised awareness in the community as to their needs and even, in the case of several, attracted volunteers. The other inspiring part of these meetings is that they always begin with an update from the charity who received the last donation as to the difference the +$10,000 donation has made in their ability to serve others. Senator Gwen Boniface, speaking on the floor of the Senate last year, described 100+ Women Who Care South Georgian Spring 2020 53

Level UP! How summer camp
helps your children grow by Cara Williams illustrations by Jenn Hartley Boyce
with
During the summer months children mature and grow at an amazing rate—summer camp experiences have immeasurable benefits for kids’ development, including improved self-confidence, co-operation, teamwork, and Summer camps push children to test their own limits in a safe environment, allowing them to develop the independence necessary to become successful learners. The experiences, bonds and memories made at camp are ones that have such a positive profound effect on children. Whether s
so many distractions available, the days of children entertaining themselves with only his or her imagination are becoming rare. Research is pointing to the value of outside play to a child’s development and how this can positively affect a child’s intellectual, social, physical and emotional skills, all of which contribute to success in school and life.

“ We will focus on helping to uplift each child and create a shared sense of community through sport and play ... ” its overcoming shyness, becoming more independent learning a new skill, or making friendships that will last a lifetime, Blue Mountain’s camp counsellors are always there to ensure every camper has a positive experience. “Anyone who’s enrolled their child in a camp program can see the positive effects on their child’s growth firsthand,” says Ashley Amis of Blue Mountain Resort. From building confidence, to growing skills such as swimming or riding a bike, to building sandcastles, Blue Mountain’s summer camps offer no shortage of lifechanging experiences. “New this summer, campers can unlock a new achievement every day with our ‘Level Up’ program.” Level Up is an achievement-based schedule that helps to emphasize the growth potential camp has for children—campers will earn badges for each activity attempted and conquered throughout their week at camp. “We will focus on helping to uplift each child and create a shared sense of community through sport and play,” says Ashley. “One child’s win is every child’s win. At the end of their camp program, children will be able to walk away with a card full of their achievement badges—a reminder of what is possible when you challenge yourself 58 escarpmentmagazine.ca
individually and work together as a team.” Blue Mountain offers customizable day camps guaranteed to keep kids of all ages on the run and engaged with exciting new adventures that appeal to all ages. With an emphasis on fun, Blue’s summer day camps are modelled after over-night camps, introducing kids to a variety of social settings that encourage bonding with counsellors and making new friends. Mountainside campers get to experience all that the resort property has to offer, including daily hikes, signature attractions like the Woodlot Low Ropes, Climbing Wall and swimming lessons at Plunge! Aquatic Centre. “It’s such a great feeling to be a part of teaching swimming skills and then getting to see [the campers] improve on those skills each day,” says a Blue Mountain camp counsellor. “Nothing beats seeing a camper retrieve a toy off the bottom of the pool for the first time. It just feels awesome to be a part of those little victories all summer long.” Blue’s Beachside Camp is packed with waterfront beach activities like stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking, supervised swims and more. “My favourite day at camp is Fridays when we join the Mountainside
and Beachside camps together to host ‘The Camp Cup’ at the Blue Mountain Beach,” adds another camp counsellor. “It’s fun to watch all age groups participate in team activities to try and win the ‘CUP’. They use skills that they have learned throughout the week like, swimming, kayaking, team work, creative play and of course fun. It’s just the best day.” Regarded as one of the best teaching centres in the area, Monterra Tennis Camp programs run rain or shine all summer long inside its state-of-the-art facility. OTA certified coaches use a progressive learning method that helps campers succeed while having a truly enjoyable time. Campers learn the basic fundamentals for each stroke including forehand, backhand, serve, and volley. Talk about a full day! All this in a safe and stimulating environment. Blue’s amazing staff is dedicated to delivering a great experience— full of fun—with a focus on building lasting friendships and developing social and life skills. But there’s a perfect mix of goofiness too. Level up! It’s summer! E For more information on dates, themes, and sample itineraries check out Bluemountain.ca

Jennifer Woodburn is a resident artist at the Loft Gallery in Thornbury. Below: Path to Open Water acrylic on canvas, 24"x 48".
Her interest quickly grew into a passion. Although she prefers acrylic on canvas, Jennifer has dabbled in watercolour and gouache, as well as oils. “In the early days, because I was painting at home with a toddler in the mix, I wanted to work with something that was easy to clean up and non-toxic. Acrylic checked all the boxes, and it also reflects my personality type—I’m highly impatient. Acrylic dries quickly and layers easily if I change my mind. It has a flexibility that I’ve enjoyed working with for over twenty years.” Inspired by the natural world, line, shape and colour are all major components in Jennifer’s work. She cites Wayne Thiebaud and Wolf Kahn as her main influences, along with renowned Canadian landscape artists, the Group of Seven. “My husband Mark is from Ontario,” explains Jennifer. “When we moved to Clarksburg to be closer to his family I made the decision to throw my hat in the ring and try to make a career out of painting. I was going to give it two years.” Jennifer enjoyed success from the outset. Today, countless Jennifer Woodburn paintings are collected, displayed and adored in personal residences and art galleries including Loft Gallery in Thornbury, Scandinave Spa in the Blue Mountains, Butter Gallery in Collingwood, Paula White Diamond Gallery in Waterloo, Ryan Fine Art Gallery in Port Carling, Eclipse Gallery at Deerhurst Resort in Huntsville and Stephen Lowe Gallery in Calgary. Having lived in Saskatchewan, British Columbia and Colorado before settling on the Escarpment, Jennifer is inspired by both wide-open spaces and mountain vistas as well as the tranquil calm of lakes and streams. Illustrated with vivid colour and dramatic skies, Jennifer

recreates simpler forms from what she sees in Canadian landscapes and rural architecture. “Mine is a graphic take on life,” explains Jennifer. Featuring all four seasons, Jennifer’s Birch series celebrates the vibrant, lush forest with joyous riots of colour. Her Water series captures the beauty of windswept trees and the rocky Canadian Shield reflected in tranquil lakes and rivers. Beginning with painting the canvas with black gesso, Jennifer sketches her design before adding layers of colour. The resulting black lines break up the bold strokes creating an almost stainedglass effect. “Through the relative chaos, I find the design in nature and dance with it on canvas. Using line and simplifying what I see, I look for interesting shapes and colours, and explore the spaces in between.” Jennifer primarily paints in her Clarksburg home studio, and often creates as a resident artist at the Loft Gallery in Thornbury. or those fortunate enough to have experienced one of our spectacular Lake Huron sunsets, you’d be sure to agree that it’s the fabulous way to round out a perfect day spent in Kincardine. But what if we told you that the sunset is just the beginning? Because around here, when the lights go down, Kincardine After Dark is just lighting up. Kincardine After Dark (KAD), is a movement. Celebrating and promoting the live music and entertainment scene in Kincardine—and not just during our peak seasons. Year round, and multiple times throughout any given week, arts and culture come to life. Showcased through live music, events, evening shopping and various other mediums that grace our local restaurants, shops, pubs and stages—offering a wide array of talent, with an emphasis on celebrating local. Now, we should insert a disclaimer here that ‘After Dark’ is essentially defined as activities that take place ‘after the workday wraps’, so all of you early-birds can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that you don’t have to wait until after the sun sets to soak up some of our local culture! Shining a light on some of our local champions of this movement is an easy task. These are the real heroes of the movement—the businesses that have embraced the challenge to bring people into our local venues to not only showcase talent, but to support each other. artists promoting other artists and creating partnerships that flourish. And these partnerships shine, as we continue to build on the momentum of some great offerings for various ages to enjoy. So, what can you expect? Let’s dig in! Although no two weeks ever look the same in scheduling, we have a few ‘mainstays’ that are locked in week after week, month after month. Local event calendars are always available and accessible online to check the line-up of regular and special event additions, but you can be sure to expect some consistent after dark experiences at the following haunts: The Bruce, a restaurant and haven for year-round blues performances (including being home to the award winning and annual Lighthouse Blues Festival held in July) showcases all walks of talent as the stage is graced for their weekly Open Mic Night. Positioned on Thursday evenings, it’s the perfect way to gear up for the weekend—whether you’re behind a microphone or enjoying a beverage on the lakeview patio during the warmer months or partaking inside at this atmosphere rich venue. This stage typically brings in a headliner to keep the evening going, but all are welcome to perform. Not to waste the momentum, Bar Down in downtown Kincardine plays host the following evening at their weekly Famous Fridays, which spotlights a musical act—you guessed it—every Friday night at 9pm. Local and regional acts are brought in to keep things fresh, and genres can range from country to rock to pop offerings. A great spot to grab some dinner before or during the show at a favourite locale. Weekends seem to take care of themselves in Kincardine with zero shortage of goings on falling into place organically, so we certainly encourage you to keep yourself in the loop through the Municipality of Kincardine APP. This free download will keep your finger on the pulse—both daily and nightly, and with a changing lineup at varying venues, your ‘After Dark’ experiences will depend on it. If you’re concerned that we’re just about live music, not to worry! Amidst the vocally blessed and instrumentally talented, one

can choose a multitude of other activities and KAD experiences to suit, showcased at unique and historic venues and buildings maintained throughout Kincardine. You can expect (to name a few) trivia nights, comedy shows, live theatre (both professional and local/amateur), sunset paddle board rentals, festivals and events, food and of course, drink! From pubs to heritage designated venues, extraordinary memories are waiting to be made. We could wax poetic about every venue, every event, or even every beer that you could add to your flight at Kincardine’s premier brewery, Grey Matter Beer Co., but we don’t want you to just take our word about all of this buzz. We were fortunate to share Kincardine After Dark with a popular, regionally based blogger, well versed in all-things-culture. His first-hand account may better entice you to sample our wares, especially after consuming the blog post, entitled ‘Kincardine, You’re Absolutely Wild: Adventures After Dark in a Beautiful Port Town’, detailing an evening spent drinking the proverbial kool-aid, and I think we hooked him. To quote, “There’s a little charge in the air, a certain feeling you pick up on when chatting with the locals”, and we think that you’ll agree. We can’t wait to share Kincardine After Dark with you, and remember, when the sun goes down, the stars come out. KALE CAESAR (FROM SCRATCH) WITH CHICKPEA CROUTONS Nothing ever beats home-made, and this is especially true for Caesar salad dressing. This classic dressing recipe is revitalized here with fresh curly kale leaves, crispy roasted chickpea croutons, and of course flakes of shaved parmesan cheese. If you haven’t fallen in love with Kale Caesar Salad yet, now’s the time to jump on the bandwagon with the rest of us. Enjoy this new age take on a classic. Serves 4. DRESSING
1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil 5
anchovy fillets
1
clove of garlic
2
egg yolks
80 escarpmentmagazine.ca
2 Tbsp lemon juice 1 tsp
dijon mustard
cracked black pepper
4 Tbsp parmesan C H I C K P E A C R O U TO N S
1 can
cooked chickpeas
2 Tbsp olive oil 1 tsp
smoked paprika
salt to taste
SALAD
fresh curly kale
parmesan cheese
n Begin by baking the chickpeas. Turn the oven on to 350°F, then rinse and dry your chickpeas. Patting them dry is key to getting
crispy croutons. Toss them with olive oil and cook on a baking sheet for 50 minutes. Remove from the oven and toss with the smoked paprika and salt to taste. n To make your dressing, combine the oil, anchovies, garlic, egg yolks, lemon, mustard, pepper, and parmesan in a blender. An immersion blender also works well for this. Pulse to chop up and combine the ingredients. Occasionally, this dressing doesn’t emulsify in a blender. If this happens, simply pour it into a measuring cup and mix by hand with a fork until it emulsifies. n Wash the kale and remove the stems. Roughly chop the leaves, and mix in a large bowl with the Caesar dressing. Add the crispy chickpeas and toss one more time. Top with slivers of shaved parmesan. Osteoporosis Bone density is about more than just calcium
S
trong bones help us in so many ways, which we often take for granted until we either experience a break or are told we have a moderate or severe fracture risk. For the active lifestyle we all want to enjoy here along the escarpment, being mindful of bone density is critical—to prevent loss of independence and avoid disability. RISK FACTORS FOR DEVELOPING LOW BONE DENSITY INCLUDE: • smoking • having a mother who had a hip fracture • body weight <125lb • having a fracture after age of 50 • Celiac disease Also, low estrogen or testosterone, chemotherapy, chronic inflammation, sedentary lifestyle, family history
82
escarpmentmagazine.ca
of osteoporosis, poor nutrition prior to your mid-20s. WHAT DO HORMONES HAVE TO DO WITH BONE DENSITY? Estrogen and testosterone have a direct impact on the cells that are working to both build up and break down bone at all times. If you are at risk for osteoporosis it is helpful to know your hormone levels. ACTIONS YOU CAN TAKE TO SUPPORT YOUR BONE HEALTH INCLUDE: FOOD You know I love using what’s on the end of your fork as the foundation for a longterm solution to most health issues. Be sure to emphasize the nutrient-dense options of vegetables (especially leafy green), sea vegetables (eg. dulse, arame,
Dr. Shelby Worts, BSc, ND nori), bone broth, ground flaxseed, raw nuts, canned sardines, and other protein sources. Minimize intake of refined sugars, alcohol and caffeine. EXERCISE This is essential, and includes 30 minutes of weight-bearing activity, at least three times weekly, to help strengthen and remodel bone, and improve balance. If you don’t know where to start, hire a personal trainer to create a program for you. SUPPLEMENTS* Top of most lists is calcium, but not all forms of calcium are equal; look for microcrystalline hydroxyapatite, citrate, or malate. A complex bone formula is going to be far more beneficial than simply taking calcium—you need vitamin D3 to help absorb calcium, vitamin K2 to help move the nutrients into your bones, and other supportive compounds like zinc, magnesium, boron and copper. Collagen is present in bone broth and can also be taken as a supplement, to help support bone, and surrounding tissues; the easiest form to absorb is hydrolyzed collagen. LOOKING TO REDUCE YOUR RISK FACTORS AND SUPPORT BONE HEALTH? A naturopathic doctor can help by ordering hormone tests, evaluating your diet and lifestyle, and making recommendations for essential steps to prevent fractures, and preserve or possibly increase bone mass. Our goal is to keep you active and independent as long as possible! * These are general suggestions and should not be interpreted as medical advice. Discuss this with your qualified healthcare practitioner, especially if you are pregnant, taking medications or dealing with a chronic disease. E

Immune Health, Naturally
I
6 easy ways to boost your system
mmune health starts with daily habits and dietary choices, that hopefully become habits, contributing to a robust and healthy immune system and nutritional status over time. SUGAR – refined white sugar has a myriad of harmful effects to our health. One of the least talked about, but most important things to be aware of is the havoc refined sugar wreaks on our immune health. Refined white sugar consumption reduces the activity of your white blood cell defence line for hours after consumption. Skip it in favor of natural sweeteners with a mineral content like molasses, maple syrup, coconut sugar or date sugar.
SLEEP – The importance of regular, adequate sleep with proper sleep hygiene cannot be understated. If you still find yourself struggling to fall, or stay, asleep you should consider taking calcium and magnesium supplement* prior to bedtime. Higher doses of each are very calming and promote a restful sleep—the time your body takes to heal, cleanse and keep your immune system working at its best. THINK ZINC* – Zinc is the most common mineral deficiency along with Magnesium. Sublingual zinc lozenges inhibit the replication of viruses in the throat and regular oral zinc supplementation may be particularly right for you if you
are vegetarian/vegan, regularly drink, experience skin problems, frequent or chronic illness, or those mysterious white half-moons on your finger nails. VITAMIN C* – Did you know that vitamin C remains bioavailable in the body for only about two hours after consumption? And the daily recommended amount by health authorities is arguably low. With that in mind, ensure you are regularly eating high vitamin C foods throughout the day, and take your vitamin C supplement multiple times throughout the day too. Vitamin C has many supportive roles for our immune system, too numerous to list here, as one of the most well-studied nutrients and antioxidants. VITAMIN D* – Most people in the northern hemisphere are chronically Vitamin D deficient from about October—April as we experience reduced intensity and duration of daylight hours, and increased amount of time spent indoors. Be sure to take a daily Vitamin D3 supplement, at least 2000 IU per day. Liquid forms can provide 1000 IU in just one flavourless drop. HYDRATION – stay hydrated, but think a bit deeper into what that means for you and choose your water wisely— municipal tap water only contributes harmful chemicals to your body’s toxic load and can really dampen your immune system and overall wellness if you are drinking those 8 glasses a day. Opt for a high-quality water filter, and read the labels of bottled water if you end up purchasing one on the go. Avoid fluoride, chlorine and added sodium; look for alkaline waters, natural coconut water or hydrating foods like fresh fruits and vegetables. It is my hope that some, or better yet— all of these recommendations help you and your loved ones to make small choices with meaningful impacts on the long-term support of your immune health. Until next time, stay well! * These are general suggestions and should not be interpreted as medical advice. Discuss this with your qualified healthcare practitioner, especially if you are pregnant, taking medications or dealing with a chronic disease.

riginally from Orillia, Robert and Oricia Smith were first introduced to life on the Escarpment by Robert’s parents, who owned a second home at the base of Blue Mountain. “We were familiar with the area,” explains Robert. “We would come up to visit and take the kids skiing. More and more of our close friends were spending time up here so we decided to rent at Rupert’s Landing. We loved the lifestyle and before long we were looking at real estate.” Along with their son and two daughters, Robert and Oricia happened upon a piece of property in the Blue Mountains, close to the shores of Georgian Bay. “It had been for sale but we missed it,” says Oricia. “About a year and a half later it came back on the market. Our agent explained that it was owned by a builder, who turned out to be Scott Gerard of Kühlhaus Custom Homes.” Having never experienced a custom build the Smiths were hesitant at first. “Scott lives around the corner and our neighbours spoke very highly of him. We knew he wasn’t just going to build it and walk away. He was amazing right from the start,” adds Robert. “We had no idea what we wanted to build but Scott had already gone ahead with drawings for a home he planned to build. ‘This is it!’ We exclaimed!” The result is both timeless and vibrant, with 4,400 square feet of finished space that features five bedrooms, including two master suites on the main floor and a secondary family room on

the lower level. Each room displays an unexpected yet effortless combination of classic, modern, and inherited furnishings, complemented by sculptural light fixtures and vibrant paintings. The open concept kitchen, dining room and great room floor-plan is clean, welcoming and bright, warmed by natural light that pours through the expansive windows and doors from Cedarport Window & Door Centre. “We spend the majority of our time in here,” says Oricia. The custom cobalt sofa, upholstered in anti-fade Sunbrella fabric, is bathed in sunlight for several hours a day and is the perfect place to curl up with a good book or catch up with friends over a glass of wine. Floating above the fireplace and custom Dekko Concrete hearth is a birch and evergreen Sue Tupy painting from Matilda Swanson Gallery. “The fire is always going,” adds Orica. “This fireplace is amazing—it throws a lot of heat and isn’t messy.” Featuring a guillotine door and fire screen that disappear, this Valcourt fireplace invites the family to relax with the crackle of the open fireplace. The soaring 13-ft ceilings on the main level and extensive use of glass in the back of the home allow for an abundance of light and privacy, and a constant view of the natural wooded area along the back of the property. Simple, uncluttered and workable was the objective in the kitchen. The well-appointed space features quartz Caesarstone countertops, professional-grade Thermador appliances and a fusion of natural wood and white cabinets. “We were cautious of

adding warmth,” says Robert. “Oricia liked white but when we saw the wood option we immediately were drawn to it. We wanted something organic and warm,” adds Oricia. “This room could have turned out very cold if we hadn’t been careful.” A trio of pendant lights hang over the oversized island, a favourite gathering spot for this growing family. “We wanted a big island because we’re always entertaining and the kids often have friends over.” The result is inviting, intimate and bright. “We made some minor adjustments to the original plans,” adds Robert. “Added a room downstairs and made some of the bedrooms smaller, but we just loved the design and layout. It works for us.” Stunning solid oak stairs connect the upper and lower floor, featuring a custom glass partition from The Glass Place in Collingwood. Radiant in-floor heating runs throughout the entirety of the lower level, garage, front walkway and porch ensuring a comfortable space yearround. Small details like a ski tuning room and glass garage door complete this stunning getaway. The couple loves the low maintenance Mountain Modern design of the home, with its steel and wood siding. The lush and peaceful landscape surrounding the property brims with easy to maintain grasses and shrubs. Conveniently located off the main floor great room, is a 400 square foot deck for entertaining. The dwelling is magnificent all year round, but it especially comes alive in the springtime. “If we miss a weekend or two this time of year, we come up and can’t believe how green it is!” Each room in the home displays an unexpected, yet seemingly effortless combination of classic, modern, and heirloom furnishings, complemented by eccentric light fixtures and lively artwork. The uncluttered design is enlivened with carefully chosen contemporary elements: the stark white walls are classic and traditional while the sculptural bathtub and floating vanity are sharply modern. Tucked around the house are nostalgic personal effects, including an heirloom headboard in the guest suite, Robert’s
parents dining room table, and Oricia’s parents dining room chairs. “Our style is a little bit of everything,” says Oricia. “We were on a budget with the physical build, as well as our furnishings. We both work so it wasn’t as if we could be here all the time in case we were needed. Scott Gerrard was here every day and he was so transparent.” “He would send us pictures and update us on everything. the master bedroom, Robert and Oricia let the dramatic views of the wooded lot take centre stage. “As you can see, we don’t need a lot of stuff in here,” laughs Robert. Also pleasing to the eye is the symmetry of the floor to ceiling drapes which hang behind the upholstered bed, from Leon’s in Collingwood. “We wanted this room to be dark for sleeping. The long drapes conceal two linear windows—an ingenious fix, thought up by Eryn Treanor of Bouj Design Studio.” The elegant master bathroom is

NEW VENTURES
POLAR LIFE HAUS For the first time, Polar Life Haus (PLH), a modern log home building company based in Finland, is bringing their log home manufacturing enterprise to Canada. Established in 1907 PLH has sold over 10,000 homes around the world—a group of dedicated individuals including entrepreneur Wyn Chivers, are in the process of developing a Polar Life show room on the Bruce Peninsula. “We chose to open up our business here because we knew that the product was a perfect fit in this environment,” says Wyn. “Our base in the Bruce Peninsula is a good stepping off point for introducing new modern log construction to Ontario and beyond.” PLH works with homeowners, architects,

designers and builders on residential, vacation, resort and commercial projects. Using primarily spruce log construction, either solid or laminated, the home is manufactured in Finland and shipped to the customer for on-site assembly. Clients can choose from PLH’s ingenious designs or create their own with the help of in-house architects and log home construction specialists. “Most modern log home manufacturers use pine almost exclusively whereas PLH primarily uses spruce of the highest quality grade,” says Wyn. “Spruce is a stronger wood than pine and is a wood species with a beautiful even light coloring, fewer knots than pine, and has a strong resistance to humidity—all of which is a perfect match for modern architecture.” A leader in design-minded log building, the manufacturing process at PLH has
been modified so that even the most demanding architecture can be achieved. The company uses the most progressive woodworking technology, providing an unparalleled quality and precision of woodworking that facilitates the most challenging design aesthetic. “Wood is an ecological building material,” notes Wyn. “There is zero waste during the manufacturing process and log homes are carbon sinks with long life spans. Wood is good for you—it breathes, keeping indoor air fresh and humidity at an optimal level. Polar Life Haus is bold, creative, and a world class leader in design and log manufacturing. We care passionately about fulfilling customers’ dreams, improving the environment and people’s health.” For more information please visit polarlifehaus.ca

preserve its appearance and usefulness,” says Will “It is then transported to us, assessed, de-nailed, stored and dried properly until such time that it is transported to our showroom or selected for milling into wall cladding or flooring.” Touted as Southwestern Ontario’s premiere reclaimed material and components supplier, The Timeless Material Company also specializes in wall and surface cladding, reclaimed timbers and board-stock, furniture design and fabrication, custom milling, reclaimed and re-milled flooring, architectural components, Osmo finishing products and more. The vast majority of whom buy primary residential real estate within five years of emigrating. Without immigration, our population growth would be relatively flat. These economic migrants contribute positively to the financial health of our society and they create demand for real estate. Combine this with the fact that it is harder and more expensive than ever to replace and add to existing housing stock. Development costs, willingness of neighbours to accept new development and a host of “red tape” (some of which is very necessary by the way) combine to make it
more difficult for supply to meet demand. Most of us took high school economics. What happens when demand exceeds supply? Prices increase. Certainly, we have been seeing a lot of that in Ontario in the past five years. While Southern Georgian Bay has not seen the same level of international economic immigration as other communities in our province, the exact same principles are at play, but for different reasons. Rather than immigration, we continue to be affected by migration. This is to say folks moving into the area from other parts of our province and indeed s
ell—I had my topic all picked out for my Market Watch article, and then—COVID-19. The topic was supply and demand. If you look at the early 2020 numbers below, you will note that we were experiencing a very robust market. And it was not just in Southern Georgian Bay. Ontario and many other parts of the country were hot sellers’ markets. In Ontario at large, many pundits were saying that the market was being fueled by immigration and a shortage of available housing stock. We have been incredibly lucky in this country to have the best and brightest in the world wanting to come and share in our bounty. And, I am not talking about refugees. I mean economic migrants. Canada welcomes some 300,000 people annually into our vast and great land. The vast majority of these come with skills, and capital. A recent Royal LePage survey shows that new Canadians share the dream of home ownership with all Canadians.

our country. I have heard it referred to as amenity migration, and that makes a lot of sense to me. I have said this so very often, people come to Southern Georgian Bay for the lifestyle. For the amenities. Golf, trails, ski hills, biking. We have the same issue here as other parts of the province though. Supply. It may seem to many of us that the landscape is changing pretty much constantly and that there are new developments and new builds wherever you look. This is true to a certain extent, but the question that needs to be asked is “Is this new supply keeping up with demand?”, and the answer is no. And the evidence to support this assertion is found in the current (call it pre-COVID-19) market. There have been increases in volume and price over the past two years. Further, the data supports the characterizations of the market as a seller’s market. This is, by definition, unbalanced. Had this article been published pre-COVID-19, I would have gone on to say that the last time I saw this kind of a start to a year was 2017. Multiple offers all over the place and a pressure that was neither healthy nor sustainable. However, now we will have to wait and see. The effects of COVID-19 are sure to impact our market. But—and it is a big but—once this crisis passes, and it most surely will, 122 escarpmentmagazine.ca
2020 I think our market is going to get shot out of a cannon again. Here’s what I am telling my agents:” Prepare to do a year’s worth of business in nine months”. I think I know what the subject of my next market watch will be already. Regarding Southern Georgian Bay real estate sales, the 2020 market certainly got off to a roaring start. Both January and February saw record volume sales: that’s eight straight record months going back to last June. Total volume for the two months was $146,184,716, up 32% from 2019 and up 17% from 2017’s previous record. The average sale price of $609,103 was up 11% from last year’s previous record. January’s and February’s 240 unit sales were up 18% from 2019, but down 12% from 2016’s high. Those sales came on 442 new listings, up 15% from the first two months of 2019. Expired listings of 115 were up 22%. The 54% sales/listings ratio indicates a sellers’ market. The $800K-$1.999M sales bracket was very active, with volume up a whopping 128% from 2016’s prior record. On the units’ side, sales were up from 2019 in following ranges: $300K-$499K (up 16%); $500K-$799K (up 6%); $800K-$999K (up 108%); $1M-$1.499M (up 133%); and $1.5M-$1.999M (up 150%). Unit sales were down in the following ranges: $300K-$499K (down 200%); $500K-$799K (down 12%); and $2M+
(down 67%). More generally, unit sales in the under-$800K price bracket—which account for 79% of 2020’s sales—were up 7% from one year ago, while the $800K+ bracket was up 100%. In terms of property type, singlefamily homes had volume sales of $119,109,106, up 26% from 2019, with the average sale price of $680,603 up 15%. Unit sales of 175 were up 9% from last year. Condo volume of $27,065,610 was up a big 68% from 2019, while units of 65 were up 55%, and the average price of $416,548 was up 9%. That takes us into March, about which we can comment on the first half of the month—a period of rapidly increasing concern about COVID-19 virus. Although we might assume that there would be a market slowdown, we did not see it in the first few weeks of this crisis at the time of writing. Volume sales of $50,192,611 are up 4% from the first half of last March, while unit sales of 91 are up 11% and new listings of 197 are up 30%. Realistically though, such sales numbers are not sustainable, even if we consider the economic stimulus announced thus far. Bank of Canada’s dramatic interest rate cuts may come into play as things start to recover though. As I said—I know what the subject of my next market watch will be. E

Aftershot THE PHOTO “The inspiring thing about living in a small space, is that you prioritize your time outdoors. We had been living in our camper and exploring became our afternoon routine. On this unusually foggy day, we decided to head back to the camper for the evening. This forest stands just off the dirt road the campground is on. As we made our turn, it was like stepping through a portal into another world—the fog appeared to magnify the trees, making them seem twice their size. We pulled off to the side and my husband Joel ran into the trees. I mounted our macro lens and zoomed in to about 90mm and snapped the photo. This photo is still one of my favourites. Who knew a dreary day on the Escarpment could bring such excitement and inspiration.” THE PHOTOGRAPHER Jenna (Kitchings) Albany moved to Collingwood from Georgia in 2015 to live with her now husband, Joel. With a passion for the outdoors, Jenna’s photography is inspired by the natural landscape, both at home and during the couples’ travels.
