Robert A.M. Stern Doctor of Humane Letters honoris causa A believer in finding the magic in the mundane, you , Robert A. M. Stern, live, work and teach by your credo that: "Building a building is an act of optimism ...an act of faith in the future." This day of commencement is also an act of optimism, and your example, as scholar, architect and teacher, inspires and energizes everyone along the paths you travel. A native New Yorker, you are considered a leading authority on the architecture and architectural history of that city. Earning degrees at Columbia and Yale, you went on to teach at both universities. Having served as Director of the Historical Preservation Department at Columbia's Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, and now as Dean of the Yale School of Architecture, you continue to influence the future of your craft. Your numerous distinctions include the John Jay Award from Columbia University and the Medal of Honor from the American Institute of Architects. You have written that architecture must be valued as "an enduring record of who we are, who we were and who we will become. " Your life's work fulfills your mission of locating and honoring "a sunlit corner in a courtyard, a glimpse of nature in a dense urban setting ... the discovery of the new and the rediscovery of the forgotten ." You founded the firm of Robert A. M. Stern Architects in New York in 1976, and your designs include private residences, public spaces and structures that celebrate visionary icons of American culture, such as Norman Rockwell , Mark Twain and Walt Disney. You have also left an enduring imprint upon Salve Regina University by designing the Rodgers Recreation Center. For your outstanding achievements in architecture and education, your commitment to architectural history and your act of optimism in the future of this campus, Salve Regina University confers upon you , Robert A. M. Stern, the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa, with all its attendant rights and privileges, on this fifteenth clay of May, two thousand and five.

Doctor of Philosophy WILLIAM FRANCIS BUNDY Dissertation Topic VISIONARY TECHNOLOGY LEADERSHIP FROM ADMIRAL HYMAN G. RICKOVER TO MASTERS OF THE INFORMATION AGE
Mr. Bundy's dissertation ponders the question of how visionary technology leadership is exercised to deliver transformational change in the United States Navy by examining the state of technology leadership in the Navy from the time of Admiral Rickover to the current era. It asserts that technology leaders must evoke passion to advance visionary ideas, draw on their professional experience to transform vision into innovation, and ultimately gather critical talent and sponsorship in order to drive innovation through complex organizations.
JULIA MONTMINY Dissertation Topic ASSESSING COGNITIVELY IMPAIRED PARENTS USING A STRENGTHS-BASED MODEL
Ms. Montminy's dissertation seeks to employ a balanced, holistic view to suggest a more ethical means of assessing the strengths and needs of cognitively impaired parents. A key question asked in this study is whether it is fair to hold cognitively impaired or mentally retarded parents to the same assessment standards as non-impaired parents. The question raised is w hether social justice is served if challenged parents are expected to perform as well as their nonimpaired peers in an assessment process that is not tailored to their needs or does not take into account their functional capacities.
TERRY BARNES MURPHY Dissertation Topic AN ETHICAL ASSESSMENT OF INTERCOUNTRY ADOPTION: ROMANIA TO THE UNITED STATES, 1990-2003
Ms . Murphy's dissertation provides an answer to the following question : Was the intercountry adoption of Romanian children by Americans between 1990 and 2003 ethically justified? Utilizing developed ethical theories-specifically, deontological ethics, an ethic of care, and utilitarianism-this dissertation qualitatively assesses intercountry adoption from Romania to the United States.
FERD SCHROTH Dissertation Topic THROUGH THE EYE OF A NEEDLE: THE PROFIT MOTIVE'S EFFECT ON MANAGERIAL MORAL REASONING
Mr. Schroth's dissertation examines the effect of the profit motive on managerial moral reasoning by qualitatively reviewing and empirically testing the "Separation Thesis." The "Separation Thesis" states that in a free market system, economic decision-making exists in total isolation from any moral implications whatsoever.

Academic Regalia Whe n Universities were taking form in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, they were under the jurisdiction of the Church. Most of those studying we re clerks in Holy Orders, monks, or priests. They wore a habit or cloak to which was attached a cowl or hood. This could be pulled up ove r the head or thrown back, according to weather. Gowns were necessary for warmth in the unheated buildings, and hoods served to cover the tonsured head before the use of the skull ca p. Today, the academic costume of ca p, gown, and hood has taken on a symbolic meaning. Colors and shapes conform to a generally accepted code and indicate the faculty conferring the degree and the kind of degree conferred . Gowns for the Bachelor's degree are worn closed and are distinguished by their long pointed sleeves. Master's degree gowns are designed to be worn open. They have very long sleeves, oblong in shape. Gowns for the doctoral degree, usually black, are also designed to be worn open and have velvet panels. Three velvet bars are stitched to the upper part of the full , bellshaped sleeves. Hoods are trin1med with a slim strip of velvet to indicate the specific faculty awarding the degree. The colored lining is the official color of the institution conferring the degree. Hoods may be trimmed to represent the following academic areas: Arts, Lette rs, Humanities ...... ............ White Business Administration .. ...... The Mace The mace and its beare r represent a custom that dates back to the Middle Ages. From the sixteenth century in England and since colonial days in Ame rica, it has become a symbol of office carried by the procession leader. In the academic world , the mace signifies teaching authority. The Salve Regina Unive rsity mace was designed by Rhode Island sculptor Paul A. Cavanagh as an octagonal, formalized flower. The staff of ebony re presents "lignum vitae" - the tree of life. A circle of eight rigid geometric forms of silver, peaked with pyramids of lapis lazuli , are representative of the Virtues. The Intellectual and Moral Virtues enable one to lead a fruitful and good life. The exte nding leaves of blossom deriving from the silve r forms are symbolic of one's develo pment in the world. An inner circle of leaves, in close embrace with the central form , and pistil-like cruciform with crown, suggest one's development in love of Christ and the cross.
The President )s Medallion The sterling silver medallion worn by the University Preside nt at all formal academic functions symbolizes the leadership and authority of the institution's highest office. Handcrafted by John Cavanagh, the design is based on the Unive rsity shield , which symbo lizes the commitme nt of the Siste rs of Mercy to Salve Regina University, the dedication to learning by all me mbers of the Salve Regina community, and the unending sea rch fo r wisdom that fl ows from the knowledge of the liberal scholar. Each link of the chain is a "Me rcy Cross," with a crown superimposed over the face of each cross.
