Moving into your new home at LMU
Before you arrive
Besides planning and packing, there are other things to consider before arriving to campus. We encourage you

to read through this publication and visit our website in order to create a “to-do” list for move-in day.

Select Your Bed Configuration All rooms contain modular furniture for each student: an extra-long twin bed, a desk, chair, bookcase and dresser. Several different configurations can be created to optimize available floor space and personalize your room. We offer four bed configuration options. Select your choice from the options on the right, and we will configure your bed prior to your arrival. Once you decide on a configuration, you may make your selection via MyLMU “Student Housing Online Services.” You must submit your bed configuration request before July 27, 2014. If you do not submit your request by July 27, 2014, we cannot guarantee that your selected configuration will be waiting for you when you arrive. If we do not receive a request from you, your bed will be set to the default configuration of “captain.” Students assigned to triple rooms or temporary housing are unable to request a specific bed configuration. Their furniture will be set-up at our discretion to provide optimal living space.

Your belongings
The residence halls and apartments are fully furnished and carpeted, but be sure to bring items that will help personalize your living space. Coordinate with your future roommate(s) to avoid bringing duplicate items. Please avoid bringing any prohibited items such as air conditioning units, pets, candles, etc. For the complete list of prohibited items, please refer to the Student Housing Policies both on our website and in your license agreement. Appliances
Insurance coverage for Belongings
The University partners with Collegiate Concepts to provide on-campus residents the opportunity to lease microfridges (microwave-refrigerator combinations). You may bring your own refrigerator as long as it is no larger than 5.0 cubic feet or lease a maximum of one microfridge per room. Microfridges from Collegiate Concepts are the only ones allowed in our rooms. For additional information, please visit www.collegefridge.com or call (888) 929-0806. Rentals with this company help support the Resident Housing Association (RHA) and its programming efforts.
You may wish to insure your belongings while living on campus. Before securing a policy, be sure to review your family’s homeowner’s insurance to see if your belongings will be covered while residing at LMU. If you find that your belongings are not already insured, there are several companies that offer property insurance to students. One company that provides this service is National Student Services, Inc. (www.nssi.com).
Linen You may purchase the extra-long, twin-sized linen that you will need, along with many other useful products, from On Campus Marketing (OCM). To check availability and place an order, you may visit their website www.rhl.org/lmu or call (800) 957-4338. Using this company also helps fund RHA’s programming efforts.
Shipping Your Belongings Unfortunately, there are no storage facilities on campus. Any item(s) being shipped to you on campus must arrive after you do. Always be sure to include your campus mailbox number to prevent delays in mail delivery. Be mindful that cash should never be sent through the mail. LMU has partnered with University and Student Services Inc. (USS) to provide pick-up and delivery of your belongings. For more information, please visit www.universityandstudentservices.com/85.html.
Parking on campus LMU is a relatively small campus. You will find that most destinations are only a short walk from your room. If you do choose to bring your car to campus, parking is available at various locations and will be determined by your room assignment. All students must register their vehicles with the Department of Parking and Transportation. The associated parking fee will automatically be charged to your student account in accordance with LMU parking policy. During move-in weekend, officers will be on hand to issue temporary loading permits for the parking spaces that are nearest to our housing facilities.

Become a part of RHA! The Resident Housing Association (RHA) is a student organization that is dedicated to enlivening the residential community at LMU. As the second largest student organization on campus, RHA advocates for resident students and provides numerous programs and activities throughout the year. We encourage you to apply for an RHA leadership position in your building. Applications are available online at www.lmu.edu/housing, and building elections occur during the first few weeks of school. When you arrive to campus, plan to attend “LMU Connect” events, many of which are coordinated by RHA. These include:
casino royale Friday, August 22nd
block party Saturday, August 23rd
Schedules & Sundaes Sunday, August 24th
Your meal plan LMU Dining Services offers a variety of meal plan options and campus dining venues. There are two diverse dining rooms and various other dining locations including a wingery, coffee shop, juice stand, convenience store, diner and full-service restaurant. These options give students ample opportunity to find the complete meal or quick snack they’re in need of. You should have already selected a meal plan option within your housing application. If you wish to change your meal plan selection, you may do so during the third week of fall semester by completing a Meal Plan Change Form, available in the Student Housing Office. LMU Dining Services is pleased to answer any other questions that you may have. For additional information, feel free to contact them at (310) 338-2977 or visit dining.lmu.edu.
Get connected
Network Each room on campus has ethernet connection, as well as access to the campus wireless network. When you first connect to the internet, you will be prompted to register your computer. LMU requires that you install approved anti-virus software and all operating system updates. To avoid interference with the wireless service, wireless routers and 2.4 GHz cordless phones are not permitted.
Cable All rooms on campus have basic cable service, including some premium channels, such as HBO, and several high definition (HD) channels. Only digital televisions currently work with the system. Although you must provide your own television and coaxial cable to access the system, the cost for cable service is included in your housing rate. For additional information regarding cable services, please visit www.lmu.edu/about/services/cbs/cablevision.htm.
Mail The Business Center offers several postal services including USPS, FedEx, DHL, and UPS. Cash or OneCard Flexi-dollars are the only form of payment accepted for postal service transactions. Please contact the Business Center at (310) 338-2890 or (310) 338-3797 if you have questions about their services.
Laundry Facilities Laundry facilities are available in each building. Laundry Alert, a web-based notification program, displays the availability of laundry equipment so that students only go to the laundry room when machines are available. The system can notify you by cell phone or email when a machine becomes available or when your laundry is done. Since there are no coin-operated machines, you need to add money to your Flexi account and use your OneCard to purchase cycles on the washing machines and dryers. The laundry cost is an affordable $1.25 per wash and $1.00 to dry.
LMU Alert System The LMU Alert System is designed to inform the LMU community in the event of an emergency or crisis. LMU Alerts are restricted to health, life, and safety issues affecting the campus community. The system will contact you via phone, personal email, and/or text message, based upon the preferences that you have selected. For information about how to register, visit www.lmu.edu/alert.
OneCard The LMU OneCard is your key to convenience! The OneCard is not only your student ID and library card—it is also the key to your room. You must have your OneCard with you to check in to your housing assignment. If you do not have a OneCard, the first stop when you arrive to campus should be to pick this up. To do so, please visit Campus Business Services, located in the Charles Von der Ahe (VDA) Building. The OneCard may also be used to purchase cycles on laundry machines, products at the bookstore, and food at campus dining facilities and select off-campus restaurants. For additional information regarding the LMU OneCard, please visit www.lmu.edu/about/services/cbs.

Get to know your roommates!
The first step to a good roommate relationship is a mutual understanding of who you are and what you expect of your new living situation. To establish this relationship, it is necessary to have an open conversation about the habits and routines that will affect your living space. The key factors of this conversation are being honest about your likes and dislikes, but also knowing when to compromise. Before discussing living arrangements with your roommate(s), it is best to assess how you plan to use your living area. To help address the topics mentioned below, a sample roommate agreement is available online at www.lmu.edu/housing. Roommate Agreement sample topics
Create a Great Experience on Campus
• How you work out differences • Your communication style • Your preferred study environment • Your sleeping habits • How important cleanliness is to you • Cleaning schedule • Entertaining guests in the room • How you feel about sharing personal items
• Talk through problems, and discuss issues as they arise. • Discuss important topics with your roommate(s). • Find areas of compromise. • If compromise is unsuccessful, speak to a Residence Life staff member.
• Use of the telephone, computer, television and other technology • The role your family/culture/religion plays in your education • The values that are important to you (e.g. personal time, privacy, social interaction with friends and roommates, religion, etc.)
Once you have reflected on these topics,we encourage you to sit down with your roommate(s) to discuss your answers. When you arrive to campus, we will have a roommate agreement ready for you to help facilitate this discussion. During the conversation, remember to be honest with each other about your wants and needs. You may come across a topic on which you cannot agree. This is expected and is also where compromise becomes a very necessary tool.
Make Living on Campus the Best Possible Experience Strive to foster great roommate relationships by creating a positive living environment. While your roommate does not have to be your best friend, honesty and open communication can be the pathway to creating a positive on-campus experience.
