Foreword Paul Turner “We are delighted to see our first cohort of Lloyds Bank Social Entrepreneurs Programme complete their year of learning and wish you every success for the future. We will watch with interest to see the impact of your projects as you continue to grow and develop them. Our partnership with the School for Social Entrepreneurs sits right at the heart of Lloyds Banking Group’s business strategy to Help Britain Prosper. It is one of our flagship programmes designed to support social entrepreneurs in communities and, through them, help stimulate economic growth and regeneration across the UK. Over the next five years, the Lloyds Bank Social Entrepreneurs Programme will support around 1,300 entrepreneurs, which we hope will generate up to 4,000 jobs.

society we have been hugely impressed by the diversity of entrepreneurial ideas that have such potential to deliver a positive impact on society and the economy. I’ve had excellent feedback from your Lloyds mentors about the programme, and hope that their guidance will be of benefit as you continue to take your individual enterprises forward. Congratulations Cohort of 2013.” Paul Turner Group Community and Sustainable Business Director, Lloyds Banking Group

This year, we’ve seen some terrific examples of projects that are bringing tangible benefits to communities, individuals and the environment. From food to fashion, and local regeneration to projects for disadvantaged members of

Sian Hill Ways with Willow Providing willow weaving and basketry courses and workshops throughout the wider social community. For local residents and visitors to Cornwall who want to learn willow weaving and/or improve their skills; schools and colleges; community projects; event providers; disadvantaged, vulnerable and/or isolated children, adults and young people. Having relocated to Cornwall to escape domestic abuse, Sian was keen to help others. When her son was diagnosed with epilepsy and autism, she wanted to provide a service which was accessible to all people, regardless of background and ability. Having grown up in rural South Wales, Sian had a life-long interest in the countryside, and in using its natural resources, such as willow. Ways with Willow provides willow weaving courses and workshops, working especially with adults and children with learning disabilities, mental health issues and those who have experienced domestic abuse, and is also open to the wider community. We are passionate about generating interest in willow weaving and preserving a traditional craft, providing opportunities for disadvantaged and vulnerable people, and

4

promoting the use of willow as a sustainable material. Willow is very fast growing, and over the next three years, we aim to plant and grow all of our own willow in Cornwall, leading to both economic and environmental sustainability. Working with willow is surprisingly therapeutic and hugely rewarding. Through workshops, projects and hands-on activities, we aim to encourage social inclusion, reduce isolation, promote independence, increase self-confidence, improve emotional and physical well-being and enhance lives. As a community interest company, Ways with Willow is committed to engaging members of the community who do not normally have access to main-stream activities. During 2014, we aim to expand our services throughout the UK, by developing our business model as a social franchise.

What the SSE has taught me: The advice, support and guidance I have received from Cornwall SSE has enabled me to develop a solid business model and achieve fast growth of our social enterprise. Without their help, we would not have been able to expand so quickly and achieve so much. Social entrepreneur tip: Collaboration is the key to growth and success.

Dan Sargison Tresargie Farm A venue in the heart of Cornwall for self-sufficiency and ecoconscious projects and social enterprises. For individuals and especially groups keen to be involved with, and develop social and environmental projects. Tresargie Farm is set to become a venue for our own social and environmental projects, and we are opening the gates to other social enterprises after phase one is complete. We have so many projects in the pipeline, including beehives, wind-turbines, rainwater collection, animals, no-dig gardening and making something from scrap, that the future looks bright on the farm.

Our ethos is one of resource independence, and we would like to use low-tech solutions wherever possible, whilst using the Internet to learn and teach - we believe in creating a blueprint for a greener future.

Using the infrastructure we’re setting up, we will run courses to share our skills with the wider community, and will even offer our materials online. We will also use our experience within the Autistic care industry to create enriching activities to enable these unique individuals to get involved and achieve something while learning.

What the SSE has taught me: The SSE has taught me more than just how to set up and run a social enterprise. It has taught me to believe in myself, has given me the tools to turn problems into interesting challenges, and has shown me how to turn an idea into something real - and then improve on it further! I know that my project will be a success now - thanks to Cornwall SSE. Social entrepreneur tip: Have faith in your own abilities.

I am a practising Artist and qualified Teacher and Potter, currently working in schools, day centres and community groups as an Artist in Residence. Having studied Participatory Arts Facilitation in Health and Social Care, I now also provide services to day centres and care homes. I have first-hand experience of the therapeutic benefits of involvement with creative art, which further adds to a wealth of research evidence. The ability to mix with peers and realising that everyone has similar problems helps to boost confidence. Caro Warwick-Evans The Cornish Seaweed Company Providing sustainably harvested seaweeds from the remote Cornish coasts and delivering related educational talks and employment opportunities. To target all those interested in local, healthy, natural foods including individuals, restaurants, delicatessens and food producers. Here at The Cornish Seaweed Company, we sustainably, hand harvest, traditionally process and package a number of local seaweeds to be eaten as a super-food, or used as an artisanal cooking ingredient. We are the first English seaweed company to be fully licenced, tested and to sell our products to food manufacturers and local delicatessens. We work closely with Natural England, Exeter University and the Food Standards Association to ensure the local environment is not adversely affected by hand harvesting and that ongoing research into the impact of the new industry is understood. Over the last year we have supplied Cornish seaweeds to numerous top restaurants and chefs, including Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen Cornwall, Nathan Outlaw, and the Dorchester Hotel as well as giving cooking demonstrations at River Cottage and the BBC One Show. In the forthcoming year, we will also be developing the first offshore seaweed

12

farm in the country to enable us to better supply the growing demand for Cornish seaweeds. Our goal is to engage with individuals who are in difficult situations with employment, whether unemployed, interested in starting out on their own, or keen to use their skills outside an office environment. We also offer educational talks in schools and events about the benefits of local, sustainably and healthy foods such as seaweed. Our vision for the future is to help create a sustainable seaweed industry in Cornwall, harvesting the seaweed, delivering educational workshops, and offering employment as well as business opportunities to others.

Pauline Davies Plus One Therapy and Support Services Offering counselling and therapy services / Special Guardian support and advice. For individuals, families and organisations, both private and third sector, involved with Residence Orders and Special Guardianship Orders, requiring support and advice. Pauline Davies runs Plus One Therapy and Support Services looking after the needs of the individual young person and their family. Pauline is an integrative trained counsellor working with Cognitive Behavioural, Person Centred and Psychodynamic Therapies, and has a Level 4 Advanced Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling. Pauline provides a counselling practice with a view to making a more accessible service. By becoming a Special Guardian herself, Pauline saw first-hand the barriers that individuals with Residence and Special Guardianship orders faced. Pauline’s passion for helping others stemmed from her desire to help her own family. Spending hours researching where help could be gained, Pauline found that more energy was spent on ‘fighting the system’ than solving the issues. Lack of time, money and resources prevented intervention and support when it was needed most.

14

Pauline vowed she would return to studying to make a difference, not only for her own family but for others. Setting up Friends of Special Guardian charity will be doing exactly that. The blend of social awareness combined with solid business acumen means that by working together we can make a difference. We have recently secured a service level agreement with Cornwall Council and have moved into premises which will enable the team to offer: • Group/ drop in chat sessions, reducing social isolation and forming peer support networks throughout Cornwall. • One to One therapeutic sessions, allowing individuals to work more intensively on personal issues. • Courses on attachment styles and how to support a young person affected. We plan to take our service across the UK and are currently in talks with several local governments for provision of service.

Stephanie Hirtenstein ChyPacas Offering personalised treks and activity sessions with alpacas in West Cornwall. For children on the autistic spectrum, and their families, plus everyone seeking adventure and the opportunity to walk beautiful Cornish byways and footpaths with an alpaca by their side. We specialise in providing services for families with children on the autistic spectrum. We recognise that every person on the spectrum is an individual with their own strengths and capabilities. Yet the one defining symptom of autism is anxiety, which is the root cause of further problems. Working with animals has been found to reduce stress and anxiety. Because people on the autistic spectrum often have problems coping with neuro typical (NT) communication (they find it hard to take in complicated instructions, often miss body language and facial expressions because eye contact can be stressful and they are often distracted by other sensory information that NT people can filter out) working with alpacas offers a different way to learn social communication tools. Working with animals reduce many of the stresses so a child is able to just be, to learn how to interact in their own time and develop skills NT children take for granted.

16

ChyPacas aims to provide a low sensory environment, out in nature, where families affected by autism can come and do something different in a safe, nonjudgemental space. Our activity sessions give something different for children on the spectrum to experience and enhance their lives within a safe space. Simone de Hoogh Powerwood Promotion of ‘overexcitability’ awareness, training, support, advocacy and empowerment. For anyone who has or is affected by overexcitability including families, children and teenagers, individuals, carers, schools, health care professionals and social groups. PowerWood is dedicated to helping families, children and teenagers living with overexcitabilities. Individuals who are overexcitable tend to be excessively affected by stimuli and can easily become overwhelmed and over-excited. Overexcitable children exhibit behaviours and emotional responses which are often misunderstood and sometimes misdiagnosed. These include high levels of anxiety and nervousness, strong emotional reactions and challenging or inappropriate behaviour. PowerWood’s founder, Simone de Hoogh, is a qualified Parenting Consultant, Life Coach and ‘Specialist in Gifted Education’. With over twenty years’ experience in advising, consulting and coaching, Simone has worked with a wide range of institutions and individuals. From this work, Simone identified a need for greater awareness of overexcitability and increased support for those dealing with it. PowerWood believes that greater understanding enables greater self-

18

awareness, enhanced self-esteem and improved quality of life. Parents are empowered and supported through workshops and individual consultations, while children and teenagers are encouraged to embrace the positives that accompany overexcitability e.g creativity, energy and lateral thinking. PowerWood also teaches coping mechanisms to help sensitive and intense children find happiness and a sense of belonging. PowerWood aims to build a community online and in person, starting with its own 16 acres of meadows and woodland where a Summer Camping Week is held annually. Here families enjoy the therapeutic and empowering gift of nature while sharing experiences with like-minded others. The week offers fun activities alongside talks and workshops designed to improve awareness and appreciation. Online, PowerWood plans to provide information, support, and virtual workshops for families. A special games section will allow children to engage with others while improving selfcontrol and understanding.

The proportion of start-ups in the social enterprise sector is extraordinary. Close to a third of all social enterprises are three years old or younger, with three times the start-up proportion of traditional SMEs. This is a trend that has increased since our 2011 survey. Social Enterprise UK – State of Social Enterprise Survey 2013

20

Cornwall School for Social Entrepreneurs

SSE Grad Master.indd 22

10/10/2013 13:23

Social enterprises are very heavily concentrated in the UK’s most deprived communities. 38% of all social enterprises work in the most deprived 20% of communities in the UK, compared with 12% of traditional SMEs. 38% of social enterprises saw an increase in turnover compared with 29% of SMEs in the last year. This means that proportionally, almost a third more social enterprises grew based on turnover last year than SMEs.

The most common (32%) main source of income for social enterprises is trade with the general public. Close to half of all social enterprises now trade with the private sector too. The proportion of social enterprises that trade with the public sector is increasing – and especially among social enterprise startups. Over half (52%) of social enterprises do some trade with the public sector – twice the proportion of SMEs (26%).

Vulnerable local people are our main workforce and they gain a range of benefits, from new skills, to greater self-confidence, to new friendships. The Growing Project runs a community garden in Pensilva offering excellent volunteering opportunities in organic vegetable production. We run training courses in organic horticulture and provide on the job learning. Many of our volunteers are unemployed, have learning difficulties, or different physical/ mental abilities etc. Often, they have restricted opportunities to socialise and to feel usefully engaged in doing something worthwhile. They are the engine of our project, work really hard and are great fun to work alongside, sharing mutual support and friendship. Their work generates the produce for a growing vegetable box scheme, bringing high-quality locally grown organic veg to community members at an affordable cost. We have just launched our new organic wholefood delivery service and a new food and wildlife growing space on the village green.

26

The project has generated investment of ÂŁ55,000 over the last 3 years, an estimated earned income/donations of ÂŁ5,000 and employs our first staff member, our Project Co-ordinator. In time, we aim to expand into a larger growing space, so that more people can benefit and find useful work.

Sarah Sejahtera Cultural Threads Offering inspiring creative art workshops to celebrate and support cultural diversity across Cornwall. Providing information on black and minority ethnic (BME) services and resources to schools, community groups and organisations, and working in partnership with the BME community. Cultural Threads was founded by community artist Sarah Sejahtera who has worked with diverse communities across Cornwall for the last 14 years. Sarah’s husband is from another country and her children are dual heritage. The experiences that her family members have had led her to feeling passionately about celebrating cultural diversity in a positive way. Combining her personal experience and professional skills led to the creation of this business. Cultural Threads delivers fun and inspiring creative art workshops across Cornwall, from learning about traditional stories from around the world, or using wax & starch resist techniques based on African patterns. All workshops look at similarities between cultures and celebrate difference, and are always made relevant to Cornwall, and the UK.

28

Cultural Threads will also be an information point for Black and Minority Ethnic services and resources for families and professionals. Cultural Threads will also work alongside the Black and Minority Ethnic community and involve them in developing new services. This sharing of information and experiences leads to a richness of understanding which can build stronger communities for the future and makes a positive contribution to the planet.

What the SSE has taught me: Before being involved with the SSE, I felt like I was ready to set up my business but that something was holding me back. I think now looking back it was my perfection, always wanting to do things as best as they could be done, which actually prevented me doing anything. I have learnt that it is better to have: “imperfect action than perfect inaction. Social entrepreneur tip: Make sure you are really passionate about your business - that you love it and it makes your heart sing. This is because as well as the highs there will be lows and you need to be determined enough to keep going and some days it can be like wading through mud or climbing high walls, but your belief will get you through.

What the SSE has taught me: That any social enterprise is born from great ideas but, it’s still a business, and a sustainable business needs a good business plan. After that you just have to jump in feet first and do it. Social entrepreneur tip: Network, collaborate and get the right people in to help move the project forward. Sometimes we all hold to tightly and try to do everything ourselves.

Jules Ford Big Blue Drum Arts for Health. For Work. For Life. Linking South West arts practitioners with people who want to use participatory arts to improve their health and wellbeing. For adults, children, young people, carers, employees, friends, families, colleagues, neighbours - anyone who wants to brighten the quality of their life through participatory arts! Participation in the arts has been evidenced to significantly improve health and well-being outcomes for people with a wide range of specific physical and mental health conditions. It has also been evidenced to increase general well-being, energize and stimulate creativity and to build community spirit. Big Blue Drum links South West arts practitioners to individuals of all ages who want to use participatory arts to help manage any specific health conditions, or to build a general sense of energy, health and well-being. Using the skills of an existing network of arts practitioners means sessions can be offered in local communities using village halls and community centres, so that people don’t have to travel far - thus reducing transport costs for participants and also increasing local employment opportunities for arts practitioners 32

Sessions include: • Singing for specific conditions such as chronic lung disorders, dementia or depression • Creative writing for people experiencing depression or anxiety • Music making for relaxation, fun, reducing isolation, sense of purpose & collaboration • Dance for strength & flexibility, improved posture & balance, relaxation and fun • Theatre for releasing creativity, developing friendships and building a sense of belonging & community Sessions can be accessed via an ‘Arts on Prescription’ referral process, through employers or via the Big Blue Drum website. See you soon!

What the SSE has taught me: That everything is possible! I also learned that, whilst every start up journey is different, there are lots of common situations and issues. SSE taught me that you can save a lot of time by linking in to business networks and learning from fellow social entrepreneurs - start ups for moral support and established entrepreneurs for role modelling and a sense of what’s possible Social entrepreneur tip: Reduce isolation by making it a priority to network with other social entrepreneurs for support.

Louise Brookes EarthFrogs’ Resilience Training Teaching resilience by sharing skills and solutions that create stability to economic and environmental challenges, provide local employment and establish a sense of long term security. For individuals, communities, schools, professionals and businesses especially those needing to overcome economic and environmental challenges. I’m a qualified Survival Instructor and have worked on Hostile Environment Awareness Training, in Ecovillages, lived on boats and remote glaciers. EarthFrogs CIC was founded because I felt there was a need to create more opportunities to live sustainably, to reconnect with nature at a deep level and to integrate ecological remediation for challenges faced by communities worldwide. Over 20 years I’ve collected innovative working solutions that empower people to solve problems; from keeping a roof over their heads, growing healthy food, to cleaning up waste, oil and radioactive contamination. What is remarkable about these solutions is how simple they are, and yet how profound their benefits; from Aquacultures for restoring peak habitats, BioChar for making ‘terra preta’ black earth that stabilises carbon, Forest Gardens for perpetual food and even re-greening the desert; to Myco/Phyto &

34

Microbial Remediation methods (that remove Cesium etc from our landscape), small scale energy supply units and low impact homes. I wanted to train teams that could respond to these urgent needs. I recognised it required education, literally, from the ground up. I am now teaching the EarthFrogs Intensive, an 8 week course that covers ‘Surviving to Thriving’ skills. Teaching students to optimise how they meet their basic needs for food, water, shelter and energy. Our students learn multiple skills - to be a naturalist, a hydrology expert, use tools, understand soil and plants, and to improvise. This gives them confidence to implement these skills to provide life affirming infrastructure for our homes and communities.

What the SSE has taught me: How to be effective as a social entrepreneur, to communicate clearly my goals and aims and to creatively manage and promote my enterprise. Cornwall SSE left nothing out in terms of support and encouragement. Social entrepreneur tip: Everyday remember your biggest motivation and be kind to yourself in your embodiment of it, and in carrying it through to your end goal.

Mat Price Proud2Be Project CIC Offering support, both face-to-face and online, to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people, especially in rural areas. Providing education and giving affirmative messages to family, friends, co-workers, employers, educators and the wider public. Proud2Be Project CIC is an organisation set up by gay, identical twin brothers Mat and Jon Price, to support and encourage all lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans (LGBT) people to be proud of who they are. The project began as an online video campaign in June 2011 when the brothers sat in front of their web cam and told the world they are ‘proud to be gay’. Various British public figures have followed in the brothers’ footsteps and recorded similar messages telling the world they are proud to be who they are too, including, Stephen Fry, human rights campaigner Peter Tatchell, Elly Barnes, Andrew Solomon, Sarah Waters, Christine Burns MBE and Michael Cashman MEP.

planning on opening LGBT community hubs in rural parts of the country. The twins even host their own LGBT radio show which can be heard on http://www.soundartradio.org.uk/. Proud2Be officially re launched their online campaign on July 4th 2013 to the national press in Central London. The event was opened by the Mayor of Camden and featured a live acoustic set from London Gay Men’s Chorus and speeches courtesy of Michael Cashman MEP and Elly Barnes. Proud2Be has so far been put forward for a Princes Trust Award and a National Diversity Award.

After fantastic support from both The Princes Trust & The School For Social Entrepreneurs, Mat and Jon not only run the campaign but also facilitate monthly rural social groups and residentials, host yearly rural pride events, offer training and consultancy and are

Dan James Cornwall SSE (Acting Chair) Congratulations to our very first cohort of Fellows Graduating today from the Cornwall SSE Lloyds Bank Social Entrepreneurs Programme! Over the last 12 months, we have been privileged to work with this incredible group of people who, following a ‘robust’ recruitment process joined the programme in October 2012. Each of the students you see graduating today, have brought their personalities and unique business ideas to our regular Study Sessions, Action Learning Sets and Tutorials. It is this mix that makes the Cornwall SSE programme so special, supporting the individual and developing their business acumen skills simultaneously. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Lloyds Bank and the Big Lottery for recognising the inspirational work undertaken by SSEs across the country. Also to Cornwall Council, for their continued support to Cornwall SSE, recognising the huge value our social entrepreneurs bring to the economic and social fabric of Cornwall. The Cornwall SSE Board of Directors would also like to thank Alastair Wilson and the Central SSE team for their unwavering belief and support for the Cornwall SSE Team and in particular their on-going efforts to ensure the

40

views of SSE and its Fellows are recognised within Whitehall and Board rooms across the UK. I would also like to thank my fellow Board members, who work closely with Sally Heard to steer the company through initial incorporation into the business it is today. We hope to make further exciting announcements in the coming weeks that will continue the growth of the CIC To the Cornwall Team whose effort and commitment is recognised by both the Board and the Graduates - thank you for everything you do to make this project such a success. To the Graduates…congratulations. What a fantastic achievement to have completed the course becoming Cornwall SSE Fellows. I know the journey and the friendships made over the last 12 months will have a lasting legacy. Celebrate the journey you have been on and use that shot of adrenalin you feel on graduation day to progress your dream to the next level. Good luck
