Case Study - newfutures – CORNWALL – developing social skills and overcoming complex barriers Ed has complex mental health needs, a history of self harming and had committed various offences including assault. Ed was twenty-five, had been diagnosed as having a personality disorder and was receiving medication under the direction of a psychologist when he signed up to new futures in Cornwall. Ed also faced other barriers including alcohol issues, dyslexia and a large tattoo of “HMP” across his forehead that was inflicted upon him at a young age whilst in prison. Ed and his case manager began by developing his motivation and confidence. They did this by referring him to the FIREWORKS programme run by the Fire and Rescue Service in Cornwall, which helped to develop his communication and social skills. Ed also attended a job club where he completed his CV, learnt about interview skills, was given advice on completing forms and applications because of his dyslexia. Ed’s confidence boost was visible, literally. Before starting with newfutures he found it hard to look at people in the eye, a trait which he has now lost. new futures provided Ed with support to search for employment, which resulted in him gaining temporary work. Ed was also helped with funding for PPE clothing that he needed for the employment. Ed’s new futures case manager liaised with Cornwall Social Services, Mental Health and DWP to secure funding of £450.00 for the removal of the tattoo from forehead. This will help Ed to progress even further as it’s a massive barrier to gaining employment and it will increase his self esteem and motivation, as currently it is a constant reminder for him of the wrong choices he made in the past. Since joining the new futures programme Ed has increased his motivation, developed new skills, registered with recruitment agencies and gained short term employment.
