Case Study – newfutures – Cornwall – setting goals, gaining new skills and securing employment Ben was signed up to new futures, in Cornwall, on release from custody, for manslaughter and was at the start of his community order. Ben was twenty-two, had a previous history of drug misuse, and was living in a hostel, in Cornwall. Ben needed advice/assistance in finding accommodation and support into employment as due to the nature of his offending, his age and limited work experience he was struggling to find employment. Ben’s new futures case manager worked with him to set goals for the future that included improving his motivation, building his self confidence, developing new skills and securing employment. Ben attended a job club where he wrote his CV, developed interview skills, had advice on completing forms and was advised how to disclose his offence to employers. This helped to develop his chances of employment as well as developing Ben’s motivation and confidence. As Ben needed to improve his skills base he looked at what could help him gain employment and decided to complete an intensive construction course with a training provider in Cornwall. Ben successfully completed his course and gained NVQ level 1 equivalent qualifications in construction related occupations and also gained his CSCS card. Ben was helped with travel costs and also with funding for his provisional licence. This gave him ID as well as helping to provide possible means of transport in the future, which living in a rural county like Cornwall would be very useful. In addition Ben was referred to an organisation that could provide support with his housing and he was given help with budgeting. Ben has now successfully gained full time employment.
