critical mass co-operative Program: Urban Art Co-operative + Residence Size: 160,000 sq. ft. Location: Kansas City, Missouri Spring 2014 The Westport Art Co-operative is designed to provide Kansas City artists with urban art studios while encouraging community redevelopment. Located in the abandoned Westport Middle School , the co-operative is intended to be the critical mass that will revive local community pride and economy while breaking down social barriers found in the area. As the building has seen a rapid decline since its closure in 2008, so has the surrounding neighborhood around the school. The Westport Cooperative will provide a sense of renewal among the local community through the re-purposing of the school, but will also encourage community involvement through co-operative events, lecture series, and public galleries. Art galleries are the vital element that offers upcoming artists the opportunity to showcase work at the co-operative, while connecting members to art enthusiasts in the Kansas City area. An artist residency program is introduced to foster an artistic environment at the co-operative that is always evolving, and to provide a continual sense of support and encouragement for co-operative members.

View From Gillham Road The Co-operative additions were designed to maximize daylight into studios and galleries while creating a connection to the co-operative sculpture garden on the northeast side of the building.

reach rehabilitation center Program: Wounded Warrior Rehabilitation Center Size: 48,000 sq. ft. Location: Manhattan, KS Fall 2013 Reach Rehabilitation Center is a process driven facility working to promote the physical, intellectual and spiritual growth of United States soldiers suffering from amputations and the traumatic injuries that ensue. Located on Pottawatomie State Fishing Lake 2, approximately forty minutes from Fort Riley, the Reach Rehabilitation Center will cater to wounded veterans in the Northeast Kansas area. The center has an organized process for welcoming and fitting veterans for their prosthetics, and fosters a supportive environment for the soldiers and their re-introduction into civilian life. The devoted support wounded veterans will receive from the facility will help them grow as individuals and provide them the foundation they need to fulfill their potential..

cph lounge Program: Chair Design Dimensions:30”x34”x30” 13” Seat Height Spring 2013 The Danish inspired lounge chair was designed with the intention of using one sheet of 2mm plywood and a laser cutter to create a sittable piece. The sides of the chair use a honey comb structure that is filled with expandable foam and later connected with glue-lam stretchers for stability. The frame is strung with twine in a fishing net pattern to provide a forgiving seat pan and back, and to visually lighten the piece. The durability test concluded the chair could support approximately 220 lbs.

zephyr digital media Program: Digital Media Company Size: Floors 8-10 in Bank of America Building Location: Austin, Texas Fall 2012 Zephyr is a digital media company formed in San Fransisco, California and is expanding their business to Austin, Texas. Zephyr is defined as a western wind, which has inspired the expansion east from the west coast office, as well as the conceptual design for the new Austin branch. An open office plan encourages collaboration between employees, and uninterrupted circulation between departments. The Zephyr-Austin office combines the use of comfortable furniture and playful materials like tensile fabric partitions to encourage a social and adaptable office space.

agura grill Program: Break-down Furniture Dimensions: 20”x18”x8” Fall 2012

The Agura Grill is inspired by the Japanese tradition of low seated dining. Constructed with dry fitting wooden joinery, the Agura Grill is capable of breaking down for easy transportation and storage, while paying tribute to the Japanese tradition of using exposed joinery. The table surface uses book-matched, walnut slabs, that terminate with bread boards for easier handling and an added curved aesthetic. The base of the Agura Grill supports the hibachi coal pan and grill, while the table top is detachable for user meal preparation prior to grilling. The easy assembly and elegant form prove the Agura Grill to be a must have for intimate meals at home or picnics with a friend.

technical drawings Building and Construction Systems 1 Professor: Samuel Zeller Fall 2011 An emphasis on technical drawings and construction is what sets the Interior Architecture degree aside from an Interior Design degree. The assignment required us to choose a former project, research how it was constructed and create a section of the project using AutoCAD. The wall and roof section was created in response to a second year interior’s project, an aging, heavy timber coffee co-operative located in Nicaragua.

Case Studies: This technical drawing assignment assigned students a variety of wall and window construction types in which we drew, then were required to find a case study in which a similar wall and window construction integrated sustainable features for passive cooling

rippel brew pub Program: Family Owned Brewery + Restaurant Size: 4,200 sq. ft. Location: Centennial, Colorado Spring 2012

With a family history in Belgian style brewing, the Rippel Brewery sought to expose their Colorado customer base to their unique processes through opening a brew pub. The family owned microbrewery will promote their brand as well as provide a stimulating experience for customers by exposing a smaller brewing room open inside their pub. Interior finishes reflect the undulating effect seen during the boiling process of making beer and designate the different seating areas throughout the restaurant. The restaurant also features an outdoor patio space large enough for live bands and will feature regular events for local beer enthusiasts.

Sampling Bar The Rippel Brew Pub encorporates a smaller brewing kitchen capable of brewing smaller, specialty batches within their restaurant. This allows the brewery to host events at their restaurant to premiere beers and give patrons an opportunity to see how beer is made.

krenovian cabinet Program: Case Piece Construction Dimensions: 36”x16”x30” Summer 2012 The Center for Furniture Craftsmanship introduction to case piece construction lead to my discovery of the famous wood worker and teacher, James Krenov. My interpretation of the “Krenovian” case piece maintains the simple aesthetic seen in Krenov’s work, but expresses a whimsical elegance through the irregular curved handles, aesymmetrical proportions and bleached Birds-Eye Maple doors. The piece was designed to accommodate tea-time accessories for a playful client seeking accent furniture, while maximizing the variety of wood joining techniques for my introduction. The cabinet is constructed with exclusively wood joinery aside from the door hinges and has a polyurethene finish for durability.

trestle entry table Program: Steam Bending + Veneering Dimensions: 30”x13.5”x30” Summer 2012 The entry way table was designed for the entrance space in a family friend’s home. The base was designed with a similar aesthetic to the family’s existing furniture, but uses elegant curves the reflect the table’s bridge and water inspiration. A shaped cherry backsplash was added to reflect a drop of water hitting the table top, as well as prevent items from falling off of the back. A book matched veneer with a complex burl highlights the natural lighting in the vestibule space and visually flows away from the wall away from the backsplash. Steam bent cherry legs are half lapped together for stability, while creating wave like branches that support the top.

personal statement I chose to pursue a degree in Interior Architecture and Product Design because the program offered a variety of opportunities to design at different scales through spaces and products. I have always been interested in how people interact with objects and spaces, but love the intimacy created when designing for a specific individual. I try to use a malleable approach to my design aesthetic, but always strive to execute my designs with a high standard for craftsmanship and meticulous attention to detail.
