Hightop.........................................................................48

Exhaustion... when one thinks of that word the image of one being slumped over comes to mind. By taking this concept I applied it to one of Ernst Haeckel’s drawings. From Haeckel’s image bio-mimicry and anthropomorphism come into play by manipulating what was in nature to something that takes on a human posture.

Started over and just traced one area os the picture. Then copy and pasted the image. Bent two of them and then twisted two for the legs.

FRONT VIEW

Bio-mimicry- I took the inspiration image and took 3 legs and bent them under the middle and then elongated the last leg and shaped it for the back.

Hand Rendering...........................................................49 Anthropomorphic- I took the concept of the arched back of the picture to the left and then implied that curve to the image. Therefore, giving the chair a posture of exhaustion.

People are highly sensitive and react strongly to lights, colors, and sounds. Some known effects are changing respiratory rates, blood pressure, moods swings, mental clarity, and energy levels. If used correctly, lighting may stimulate cognitive development. Sound has the capability to increase productivity, but it can also be very detrimental to a person’s concentration. These elements have a great impact on the learning environment. Applied thoughtfully, light, color and sound can be instrumental in shaping an environment that produces innovation.

ti

technology fo r

With overhead projectors and PowerPoint presentation lectures have created the critical need of higher technology in the classroom. Inventive technology as captured the attention of students while reinvigorating their learning experience. Research concludes, the idea is to provide an environment for students to work together on campus, across campus, across the state or globe. Animated conversations and collaboration via webcam, flat screen monitors and videos have provided students with the ability to multi task and develop projects to a significantly higher level.

Students are faced with endless group projects in today’s curriculum. Professors encourage students to brainstorm and evaluate with peers via the World Wide Web. Students are encouraged to take advantage of the conveniences of wi-fi, portable modules, and media in this design. The prominent impact of technology is a strong design element in this historic building.

While the classroom is evolving into a new and inventive style of learning, consideration of history as our greatest teacher should be taken. Through understanding design history, we are better able to discern the why’s and how’s of the world. This irreplaceable knowledge base enables us to avoid mistakes made previously and improve to more innovative ideas. Through this renovation, creating a forward thinking design is of utmost importance. However, this does not eliminate the historic presence of architecture. A renovation that is respectful to the historic nature of the building will only add value to the education provided in this space.

STARKVILLE CIT Y HALL

Objective Take an existing building and design a space that will become the new location for Starkville’s City Hall. We had to measure and draw the existing building. The goal was to make it not only function, but design an exterior that would bring the different styles of downtown together. Software Implemented - Autodesk Revit 2012 - Adobe InDesign CS4 - Adobe Illustrator CS4 - Adobe Photoshop CS4 STARKVILLE

Located at the head of Main Street, Starkville’s new City Hall brings a fresh addition to historic downtown Starkville. Home to the Mayor, Building Department, and City Clerk, this new facility provides a space to cater to the needs of the community. The color scheme, inspired by Mississippi’s state flower the Magnolia, contains hues of red, green, and white. In keeping with the traditional downtown architecture a Chicago Style brick accented with sage green stucco clad the new façade. The use of arches on the front exterior mimics the traditional styling seen throughout this historic town. This new City Hall sets a vision and brings new opportunities for the future of Starkville.

Architectural Design II-A Date: Fall 2009

Objective Part 1 of this assignment was a group effort. We where given a plot of land located in Starkville and had to design a sudivision that would come into play in Part 2 of this assignment. After the groups submitted there ideas the teachers and students voted for the best design and my group was selected. For Part 2 we had to research and design a space that is inspired by an architect or famous architecture that was assigned to us and place the design in the subdivision that was choosen. My inspiration was the Josephine Baker House, designed by Adolf Loos, located in Paris, France. Software Implemented - Autodesk AutoCAD 2009 - Adobe InDesign CS4 - Adobe Photoshop CS4 Part 1 Individual Responsibilities - Assist in the space planning. - Draw the final site plan for our presentation.

Exhausted to No End

Ernst Haeckel Inspiration

Traced the picture and then bent the surface.

Bent the surface more to try to create a seat.

TOP VIEW

SIDE VIEW

Started over and just traced one area os the picture. Then copy and pasted the image. Bent two of them and then twisted two for the legs.

FRONT VIEW Bio-mimicry- I took the inspiration image and took 3 legs and bent them under the middle and then elongated the last leg and shaped it for the back. Anthropomorphic- I took the concept of the arched back of the picture to the left and then implied that curve to the image. Therefore, giving the chair a posture of exhaustion.

45| Product Design

What’s in a Chair? A chair is a multitude of symbols placed in one object. It can represent POWER, not only in its structure, but also in its use. It can also IDENTIFY a person and a time in HISTORY. This side chair represents unity in that it is apart of a set. It can also stand alone and therefore have a higher power aesthetically. A side chair can also identify a persons wealth. Like in the Victorian Era, the more chairs one had in a room the better off financially they were. It can also show a sense of equality if it was a part of a dining room table. Everyone at dinner would be in a seat just like it. As history progressed through the years technology changed. This chair not only brings together past design features it also incorporates manufacturing, which allows for more product to be produced in a shorter amount of time. By incorporating these three things, POWER, IDENTITY, and HISTORY, it can now bring up the idea of production and consumption. In today in age that is all we think about. How fast can we get it and when will we need to be replaced? I feel like this chair is a prime example of this because of how old the chair is and how surprising well it has held up through the years. It is a prime example of how POWER can be used. The idea of bringing HISTORY into the picture by using historical motifs and intuitive methods of assembly can help one IDENTIFY with how people perceived a chair in the past.

REPURPOSED Repurpose. Variation. Circular. These are aspects that create the chair Repurposed. During the design process the idea of a dome and the different sizes of a dome was what drove the design. As it evolved the dome was just used in the structure and seat. To include variation different sized washers took on the shape of the dome. This is also how the thought of repurposing comes in mind. Not only could this chair be made out of recycled washers it is also using this mechanical component to construct the chair in its entirety. It shows that an object can have more uses then the ones that were intended for it.

47| Product Design

SIDE CHAIR

ARM CHAIR FRONT VIEW

FINISHED PRODUCT

SIDE VIEW

HIGHTOP

Merging two styles of chairs, this chair creates its own unique style. It incorporates classical elements from both the Mid-Century Modern arm chair and the Queen Anne/Colonial Revival side chair. The low seat, high back, and curved base produce an original design. The combination of the various parts illustrates the concept of reuse. Integrating the seat, back, and stretchers from the arm chair and the legs and seat from the side chair into a new piece of furniture bring these worn-out pieces back to life.
