Have you ever really sat down and thought about how significant a brand new year is? I have! Many

times over. Ever since I was little, I have had a strong understanding of the value of time, and the preciousness of every minute.

2018 is 365 days that are brand new in the history of the world. It’s time that has never been had before. It’s a blank canvas. We can pretty much paint whatever picture we want on the amazing canvas put before us. Many people don’t realise that time is their most precious resource. You can lose money, and regain it. You can lose your health, and regain it. You can fall out with people, and restore the relationship. But once time is gone, it’s gone forever! Rather than treating these 365 days as incredibly precious, the tragedy is that it’s a statistical fact that many people are going to waste these next 365 days before them. For them, if 2017 was dull and boring, and unfruitful, 2018 is going to be pretty much the same! They are not going to try anything new, do anything new, get involved with anything new, stretch themselves in new ways (and I don’t mean just physically!), expand their mind in new ways and so on. Steve Jobs, the inventor of Apple, said this:

“My favorite things in life don’t cost any money. It’s really clear that the most precious resource we all have is time.” It was Lord Chesterton who said

BUILDING

I want you to do something right now for me. How old are you? Say your age out loud, and repeat this three times. Do you realise that many people did not reach your age? Their lives were cut short by an accident, or cancer, or some other misfortune. Oh how much they would love to have lived to your ripe old age! Say you are 50 years old when you are reading this. Now imagine someone full of life and vigour and ambition died at 25 in a car accident. How much would they have loved to have had those 25 years between 25 and 50 that you have had! Imagine if that 25 year old met God in their death, and God said to them, “I will raise you back to life, and you can have only another 25 years on earth, but at 50 you will die and never come back to life again. No more second chances! ” Imagine how that 25 year old would spend those 25 years, knowing that was all they had! For sure, they would have carefully planned out their 25 years, setting hourly, daily, monthly, and yearly goals. They would have been incredibly careful to go away somewhere in peace and quiet to answer the question “What do I REALLY want to achieve with my next 25 years?” In other words, they would have grasped the full and true value of those 25 years before them, and made every effort to not waste one second! None of us knows how much time we have left. My advice, live every day like

it was your last. Set daily, monthly, and yearly goals for this year. Make them specific. Make them measurable. Write them down. Read them each day. Be accountable to someone else who can check up on how you are going with achieving your goals. Make them so big that to achieve them you are going to have to really stretch! Together, let’s make 2018 the best year ever for our personal growth, and the growth of our community at Henderson Heights. If each of us in HH has a booming year in personal growth, the community will boom too. I encourage you to attend Terri’s vision board workshop, advertised on page 4.

love ALIVE

• Spend 15 - 30 minutes a day communicating without distractions. Talk about the things that went well that day, things that brought happiness and also the things that were difficult. Really listen to each other, paying attention to body language, facial expression and tone of voice. Show empathy by nodding, smiling and physical touch. Avoid judging or arguing; this is just a time to listen and connect. If an issue comes up, agree to discuss it further at another time after you have both had time to think things through. • Schedule one hour per week to talk about the more serious stuff in the relationship – finances, in-laws, holidays, childcare arrangements. Brainstorm solutions and pick those that will work. Encourage each other to achieve goals and dreams, provide feedback and offer compliments. • Plan a “date” once a week. Take turns to do this. It doesn’t have to be expensive, as time together is more important. Some couples stay home and watch movies or cook together; others go out for a picnic or a tramp in the bush. Some work out together at the gym or meet for lunch and a chat.

• Say “I Love You” to your partner every day. Whisper it in their ear; write it in

• Learn each other’s “love language”. Gary Chapman has written several books on expressing love in ways that other people can recognise and appreciate. His five love languages for couples are: Words of Affirmation, Quality Time Together, Acts of Service (devotion), Physical Touch, and Giving Gifts. You can read his books or take an online assessment to discover your primary and secondary love language and that of your partner so that you understand and appreciate how you each best express and receive love.

You owe it to yourself and your other person to keep love alive in your relationship. Here are some ideas to start you off:

a text, email, on sticky notes on their computer or fridge, in their lunch box, in lipstick on the bathroom mirror, with pebbles on the beach, carved into a tree at home. Be creative, let yourself go and be extravagant in expressing your love.

• Once in a while go away together for the weekend or a couple of days during the week. Leaving work and 'chores’ at home tells the other person they are important to you. Thank them for choosing you over other things. Let them know you appreciate them. Take the time in the relaxed environment to nurture your relationship.

People who have lived together for a while become familiar with the other person, sometimes to the extent of boredom. It is easy to take the person for granted, assume you know what they are thinking, second-guess what they will say or do and settle into a sort of mundane domestic bliss that lacks the excitement of romance.

Maxine Rudings, Chadlington Avenue, HH I like the Henderson Heights news. It’s very informative and helps me find things that I need. I like hearing about people in my own neighbourhood so I can get to know them through this paper. It’s also been a way for me to re-connect with old friends (who saw the article about us in the Christmas edition) and make new friends (people who have recognised us as a result of being in the paper, and said ‘hi’! ) Marjorie Alcala, Virginia St, HH.

To my dear family in HH, I am now in my new home in Flatbush. I miss you all. When I came here, I gave out many copies of our Henderson Heights Community News. My family and I have resided in the Henderson Heights area for the last 17 years. Our family would like to thank Julian Batchelor for his motivation and his genuine compassion for people. It’s this compassion that has inspired Julian to start this amazing paper. The articles are interesting and they give our wonderful community a real sense of connection to others. VOLUNTEER PATROLS KEEP HH RESIDENTS SAFE! Henderson Heights has certainly changed since the 1950s when I was boy. Sturges Road used to be a quiet country road. Today it’s so different! I see how busy it gets because I drive up and down this road often as part of a small group of volunteers giving their time to help protect our HH community. We call ourselves “The Henderson Community Patrol”, affiliated to a national organisation, Community Patrols New Zealand (CPNZ). We are volunteers who give up their time to help the police make HH a safer place to live. While you are safely tucked up in bed, we are out patrolling HH streets. We act as the eyes and ears for the police reporting any suspicious activity or any other events occurring that may need an urgent response: property damage, fire risks, graffiti, illegal rubbish dumping, flooding, spillages, environmental risks, vehicles which look stolen, people fighting in the street, assisting at an accident scene, people acting suspiciously.

Whatever we come across, the well being of our volunteers is extremely important so there is no obligation for us to get directly involved in any incident that will compromise our safety. Our role is simply to observe and report. The hours we operate are totally dependent on the availability of the volunteers. We are always looking for people who want to connect with their community by protecting its people and their property. It’s fun, challenging, and a great way to build lasting friendships!

with Haley World Famous Family Live in Henderson Heights! Yes, I am talking about the Babich family! In 1910, Josip Babich, a 14-year old from Croatia, made the journey to New Zealand, where he would work in the Northland gum fields, and, in 1912, planted the first Babich vineyard in the area now known as Henderson Heights. Raised in grinding poverty, his only chance to improve his circumstances was by emigrating to the ‘New World’.

“We have never abandoned the values established by my grandfather Josip”, David Babich (CEO, third generation) says. “Respect, integrity and the needs of customers were important to him. “Over 100 Years on, these values are still at the core of what we do. Back in 1916, Grandad took an order for six bottles of wine for a wedding and delivered it himself by horse. It was an 80km round trip and he ended up staying for the celebrations”. Now, the Babich Wines family business has 3 generations of winemaking experience behind it, 13 vineyards in New Zealand’s finest wine regions, and a passion of winemaking as a way of life. “A love of wine and family. A vision for

the future and to produce nothing but excellence. To share and to enjoy – but these gains can only come from honest hard work, a care for the land and a care for the people. These are the things, we at Babich Wines, will never lose sight of ”. We’d like to invite you to our Cellar Door, 15 Babich Road. Yes, we are HH residents like you, only a few minutes by car from your place! When you come, you can sample our best wines. Bring your HH friends and enjoy a morning, afternoon, or evening with us. Outside you can enjoy a game of petanque on the lawn over looking the vineyard. Inside you can explore our family history in a beautifully designed space that embraces the old and the new. We so look forward to hosting you and making new friends from our HH community!

Experts in stylish refined wine with easy drinking appeal, Babich Wines have ridden out major industry changes almost every decade since the 1950s. Expanding from Henderson (home of the first vineyard and head office) to Gisborne and Hawke’s Bay, and finally into

Marlborough, (today the producer of 90 percent of its wine), Babich Wines has continued to go from strength to strength. In the last three years it has doubled its Marlborough land holdings and built a winery that can handle 6,000 tonnes of fruit.

New Lincoln Road Mitre 10 MEGA Owners “We Love People!” 2017! “These results pleased Dave and I even more than making sales” exclaims Elaine. The key to staff satisfaction? Communication. “We have what we call ‘huddles’ two or three times a week. A huddle is when the staff meet in the store. We report back to them our customer feedback. We give out prizes and vouchers to staff who are excelling. The staff love these meetings” says Elaine. “If our staff provide excellent customer service it is reflected in our results” says Dave. For example, we know people who used to live out West and have moved

into the city. They still drive all the way out here to buy from us rather than their local DIY store. Even though we are a big store, we really focus on making each customer feel special, and giving people that personal touch.” Dave and Elaine emigrated to New Zealand from Britain 16 years ago. They were recruited by Woolworths (now Countdown), where Dave became the National Operations Manager. He was then appointed General Manager for the Noel Leeming group and then CEO of Liquorland. An impressive pedigree. Dave’s first association with Mitre 10 was as the National Operations Manager in 2012. In 2014 he and Elaine opened the Mitre 10 MEGA Westgate store. Elaine manages the administration side of things in both branches, and adores her work. 28 years married with two children, Dave and Elaine make an incredible team. We wish you well in your new venture and thank you for supporting OHHCNews. Come down and see Dave and Elaine at the Henderson store when they take over on 1st March.

TRIP TO NORTHLAND LEADS TO DREAM COME TRUE! HH resident Gavin Daji always had a dream to help people. For him, life has not always been Rosy. A father at 19, Gavin had contemplated suicide at 22. Life in his early days was tough. “God helped me through”, says Gavin “and I found my feet.” For the last 40 years he’s run a very successful panel beating business out West and loved every minute of it. But, he says, “The time came to move on. I have always had a dream to help people in a more personal way than fixing their cars. My dream is to build an upmarket boutique motel with the purpose of listening to people, understanding them, and helping them. What I have found is that most of us have issues, and we carry baggage around with us all our lives e.g. “You’ll never amount to anything. You are just like your father”. Stuff like that. This baggage inhibits us from living the life we should have had or could have had.” So when Gavin left panel beating behind, he felt led to travel deep into Northland to find the land he needed to make his dream a reality. He found it in Hokianga.

It suited him perfectly! “Most people have been robbed of their potential. How are people restored? When they are loved, and honoured, and served, they feel like doing the same for other people. This is how I want to run my motel. I want it to be an oasis.”

I saw the plans for the motel – they were impressive and not like any motel I’d seen before. Says Gavin “Stage one of five has been completed. I am so excited!” Your community at HH wishes you well Gavin. I for one can’t wait to see your vision become a reality!

The Hotel was shifted in 1962 so that another block of shops could be erected in the front of the building. In December 1996, the Falls Hotel was shifted again to the corner of Edmonton Road and Alderman Drive. The building was completely restored and is now a successful restaurant.

Hindu Family Exude Happiness! Grandparents, children, and grand children all living in the same house and ecstatically happy? Meet the Singh family in Henderson Heights! This is what impressed me when I interviewed this lovely family in their home on San Valentino Drive. “How does it work financially?” I asked. “Do you all chip in a certain amount each week to meet household expenses?” “No” says 76 year old Grandad Narendra. “We all help with whatever is needed. It works perfectly. No one keeps score. We just support and love each other. Really, it’s very simple.” Narendra and his lovely wife Suruj emigrated from Fiji in 2002. Narendra was able to get a work permit easily at that time because he had skills with heavy machinery which NZ needed. He is still working today. Son Naveen came to NZ in 2004 with his wife Swastika who was heavily pregnant back then! He too had skills that the government needed: carpentry and cabinet making. From 2002 to 2018, Naveen has owned

several successful businesses including trucking, green waste management, and freight forwarding. Today, 2018, his focus is to build his construction company DESIGNALINE CONSTRUCTION. With eleven employees, he is back doing what he loves most and is best at - carpentry and cabinet making. Naveen’s daughter Nishma is studying law and business at university. Naveen smiles “One day, she is going to be my lawyer and run my business!” Everyone laughs. This is a happy family making a big contribution to NZ and modelling a successful, caring, loving family. Study Naveen’s advert on page 8. If you need any of his skills, pick up the phone and call him! Let’s get behind out HH businesses and celebrate a great HH family.

Why this paper started... I live and work in Henderson. The concept of ‘connection’ motivated me to start this paper. By ‘connection’ I mean two things. First, ‘connection’ means developing deep, ‘real’, honest, and meaningful relationships with other people, whether they are family, friends, or neighbours. When we connect, we thrive. Creating a network of friendly relationships in a local neighborhood can give those who belong to the network a greater feeling of belonging and wellbeing. Working together to create a tighter-knit, ‘connected’ community makes you feel like you are part of something bigger than yourself. It just makes life better and richer. Sadly, today, many people have not really ‘connected’ with their immediate neighbours, even though they and their neighbours have lived next door to each other for years. Second, to make ‘connection’ we have to give of ourselves, whether it’s our time, our money, our talents, or our abilities or skills. For example, when you bake something for your neighbour you have to give of your time and money. When we give, we usually receive much more than we gave. Anyone who has lived a little knows this to be true. With all this in mind, I thought about how I could play a small part to enhance and add to ‘the connection factor’ in Henderson Heights. As a real estate agent, I wanted to be much more than just the guy who helped people buy and sell homes. I wanted to ‘connect’ and ‘give’ and help build the Henderson Heights community. Thus, the idea of a newspaper was birthed. One day, I sat with a local and our conversation drifted onto the cost of school camps. He told me how some kids just wouldn’t make it to camp because

their parents just couldn’t afford to send them. I thought “This is so tragic.” The idea came to channel the profits from advertising in this newspaper into local schools (and other worthy causes in the community) so that less financially able parents could send their kids to camp. My goal is to see that no child at any of the local schools misses out on camp for financial reasons. If you are parent who needs a hand in this way, just contact me on 0274764430. We’ll do our best to help. How can you help build the sense of community / connection at Henderson Heights? In every issue there will be ideas and stories about how you personally can help do this. This paper is not paid for by Barfoot and Thompson or any other single business or individual. Rather, it’s paid for by advertisers and sponsors. Virtually everyone associated with this paper is a volunteer. Volunteers in HH write many of the stories and I edit them. I source the advertisers. Sarah Moon, our

graphic designer has given her services for free to get the paper up and running. Nicholsons Print are sponsoring a big chunk of the printing costs. The paper is delivered by locals to 5000 homes. So when you receive a paper and enjoy it, know that a lot of people in your community have paid for it with their blood, sweat, and tears! All the money generated from advertising in this paper is deposited in a public trust account governed by local legal firm Daveports West. The accounts associated with this paper can be viewed by anyone, anytime so there is complete financial transparency. I lead a small team of people who oversee the direction and delivery of the paper. Everyone who is involved is passionate and dedicated to seeing ‘community’ in Henderson Heights flourish and grow. We’d love you to join in. Until the next issue, have a fantastic month!
