CRITICS - SHOW SOME LOVE!
The following article is a HH resident’s response to the cover story in the February / March issue of this paper in which a resident criticised residents who don’t keep up there gardens. I have been enjoying the community spirit involved in your community news and really felt hope for the future of Henderson Heights. However, the front page of the latest addition “I am sick of it” article really made me feel upset and excluded from the Henderson Heights
community. I felt like the community news was always about bringing the community together and helping out others who are in need. The article spoke about someone being upset at neighbours who do not keep their houses tidy because it makes their house price drop. My question is what about these people in these houses!!!! Of course everyone wants to live in a nice home. If they don’t have their curtains open all day there is definitely a mental health problem I don’t think they need to be put down for it.
In the article it says “how can people feel good about themselves if their houses are a mess?’ That’s the whole point they don’t. They don’t need to be put down by a local community news, they need to be supported. My advice would be to this upper class person in the article is mow someone’s lawn for them. Knock on their door with baking and see if they need help in the garden. We are part of the community too and there are millions of reasons that someone can’t mow their lawns. I was a young mum with three young kids and a new baby. I couldn’t even get the dishes done let alone the lawns. One day my neighbour - without saying anything - came over and mowed my lawns for me. That is what I call community spirit!!!! Please remember there is more to life than the price of your house. Please look out for everyone. Many of us in Henderson Heights are struggling to do daily life but I still believe we are an important part of the community even if we don’t mow our lawns. (Written by an anonymous HH resident)

AN UNHEALTHY HH COMMUNITY = EARLY DEATH.
stores are nearby you can walk or bike there, improving your physical fitness and reducing car use.
Plant trees. Besides absorbing air pollutants and carbon dioxide, protecting against climate change and providing oxygen, trees add to the health of humans, wildlife and neighbourhoods. Plant trees at your home (preferably native varieties adapted to soil and climate conditions) and encourage your neighbours to do the same. Consider organizing a community tree-planting project.
That’s right – studies show that people living in dilapidated neighbourhoods with fewer public services, safe spaces and supportive social networks are more likely to suffer poor health and premature death. There are plenty of smaller things we can start doing right now to help make our neighbourhood healthier. Here are 4 ideas to help us and everyone around us to live better and longer.
Grow your own veges. Garden-fresh fruits and vegetables grown naturally in your backyard with homemade compost and without synthetic pesticides or fertilizers are more nutritious than refrigerated produce shipped from long distances. Organize a healthy produce swap with neighbours. Also ask local
grocery stores, restaurants and schools to offer more healthy food and drink options.
Make HH more walkable and bike-able. According to research, each hour you spend in a car per day corresponds with a 6 percent increase in your odds of becoming obese. Lobby for speed bumps, elevated crosswalks, lower speed limits and other traffic-calming designs to slow down drivers. This makes conditions more favourable for walkers and bikers in HH.
Buy from the local shop. Buying from businesses in your community doesn’t just help them thrive, it also helps you and your neighbours in a number of healthpromoting ways. For one thing, if
In the next issue, I will share more ideas about how we can build a healthy HH community! Until then….

Anthony Robbins
FOUR REASONS SOME PEOPLE SUCCEED AND OTHERS DON’T Have you ever wondered why some people succeed in so many areas in life, while others give up early on? There are some major differences between these two groups, but the good news is that even if you’re not successful, you can do something about it today and turn things around. Here are the main reasons why successful individuals achieve their goals, and how you can be more like them.
They have a vision. If you don’t have a direction, you’ll end up somewhere you don’t really want to be. An end result is what you need to have in mind not only to be on the right track, but to also get a motivation boost every time you visualize it. So think about the things you truly want in life. Where do you see yourself a year from now? What do you want to change about yourself and your current life so that you can get closer to that vision?
They stay consistent long enough. Consistency brings results, but you need to be patient and to be doing what you do long enough to see any progress. It may not be visible in the beginning, you may not be making any money during the first few months after creating your business, you may not be losing any weight even though you’re dieting. But change happens when you’ve put in enough time and effort. Once it does, you’ll feel great about yourself and that sense of accomplishment will help you move forward. So find ways to stay on track no matter what, don’t let
Bought to you by the BATCHELOR. Your local Real Estate Agent.
distractions get in the way or other people discourage you. Keep going and know you will succeed, it’s just a matter of time.
They change their environment. Your environment must breed success if you don’t want to be ordinary but to achieve big things in life. That means that you shouldn’t be surrounded by negative people, read information made for the masses, eat unhealthy food etc. All that affects your judgment, your energy levels, your health and success. Make the necessary changes so that you can be inspired, positive and productive every single day. Communicate with those with similar goals, read biographies of successful people, watch YouTube videos of the same, go to places that increase your energy, take care of your health. All that matters and is part of the person you’re trying to become.
Successful people don’t listen to naysayers. There will be at least a few people in your surroundings that will tell you your goal is not worth pursuing, that what you’re doing is crazy, that your idea is impossible. Your job is to ignore that and focus on your vision instead. Any genius in history was considered crazy, every successful product and company seemed almost impossible to be built in the beginning. But what’s behind every life-changing creation is a person that stayed true to his beliefs and didn’t listen to the crowd. I hope you found these helpful! Next issue, I will give your four more!

Re: I am sick of it.
Re: Living Well.
I read your story about some people in Henderson Heights being upset about some houses in the area becoming unkempt and neglected. A lot of this has to do with cultural differences. Some cultures see a house just as somewhere to live, and the garden area is just the land they own. In the country they come from, land is for production and not for decoration. This is why you see some cultures in New Zealand using every space centimetre of their land for growing vegetables. Kiwis, and by this I mean Europeans who have lived here for many years mostly come from European stock where the land on which a house sits is for beautification. And what’s more, now the horse has bolted, there is absolutely nothing we can do about it. That’s how I see it.
Well done for having a page written by Anthony Robbins. He is the most famous and successful motivational speaker in the world and I have read his stuff for years and it’s helped me a lot. I thought the 10 points he made in his article were excellent and I have started to put some into practice already. Thank you guys!

Re: 9 Reasons Why Auckland Real Estate Is Going To Take A Hit In 2019 Julian, I thought the points you made in your editorial made perfect sense. You summarized the current market conditions really well and make it easy to understand. You didn’t mention how government policies around insulation for rental properties and other compliance laws were going to force rents up. Otherwise, it was a great article.

JAGUARS FIRST ELECTRIC CAR Jaguar NZ general manager Steve Kenchington says the award is recognition of the level of design expertise that has gone into creating this exceptional electric car.
“This award is one of the industry’s most prestigious and is an endorsement of the nextgeneration technology and refined innovation that have gone into its development. Already well received by the New Zealand market, interest in the new model continues to grow with demand far exceeding supply before the first customer’s vehicles have landed here,” he says. The car is 94 per cent aluminum, more than any Jaguar. Not only does it have the power of a V8 supercar but the torque is also impressive, going from 0-100km/h in 4.8 seconds. An impressive aspect is the regenerative braking which, when set on high, means you don’t have to use the brakes any time in your journey. Instead, the moment you lift your foot off the accelerator it begins to brake, creating single pedal driving.
of the Year, and Kiwis will be able to see for themselves why the SUV won the crown. The title of 2019 European Car of the Year will definitely help get more eyes on the vehicle in our showrooms. The Jag took out the European title from six other finalists. The award recognizes technical innovation, design, performance, efficiency and value for money.

GARDEN TRANSFORMATION
Hi, we are Kelvin and Avery, and we are both post 70! This “gardening” story begins in the beautiful North Island town of Taupo where we were living 3 years ago. For various reasons, we wanted to move from Taupo to Auckland. After we’d sold in Taupo, we decided to rent in Auckland which would give us time to look around for a house to buy. Through friends, we were offered a lovely flat in Auckland for reasonable rental in exchange for us repainting the interior. As a way of saying ‘thank you’ for the flat owner’s kindness, we went on to landscape the garden as well. Creating a garden is just the best “happy place” for both of us – me doing the planning and my patient, accommodating husband doing all the heavy hard slog! Enter – Julian Batchelor! Julian took us to a small cottage still in the process of internal repainting and with lots of DIY needed, but within our price possibility. My initial
How they found the garden.
reaction was – “Oh Julian, it’s so ugly” and my word it was! Dark brown exterior in awful condition, holes all over the place inside and absolutely NO garden. While we considered the possibility of buying this house, our Epsom landlord asked that we take out the garden we had planted as any future tenants were unlikely to care for it!!!! Ohhh! Chinese torture! Then the idea came to us – eureka! We’d purchase Julian’s ugly duckling, and take all the plants and garden fittings with us from the Epsom flat. The initial project was to tidy up the interior and we had a lovely cheery handyman Ray, who worked wonders on replacing doors, tidying up wardrobes, reshaping an exterior deck and many other “jobs”, then it was garden time! First many hundreds of river stones – small and big, had to be dug up from the circumference of the small yard – clothesline moved, weedy grass killed off and drainage of the sour, soggy
After extrodinary transformation
soil. Slowly it all came together with a little pathway wandering through the beds and a circle of artificial grass nicely edged with pavers found on the property amongst the rubbish! On the whole we utilised every plant we had to remove from Epsom, and now so enjoy the tranquil small corner that is now our home. The final job in the transformation was exterior painting which last summer my energetic 80 year old ex pharmacist husband tackled – along with inserting some decorative panels in the plain wooden fence, scalloping the top and I managed a coat of paint on that to make our little cottage have that loved and looked-after feel.

NZ TOUCH RUGBY CAPTAIN and COACH here in Henderson Heights Captain and Coach of the New Zealand Touch Rugby team lives in San Bernadino Drive, Henderson Heights! That’s true, and his name is Jamie Laufiso. What an incredible feat for a man who’s 53! Jamie is off to Kuala Lumpur from April 27 to May 4 to attend the touch rugby world cup. For Jamie, this is the culmination of 35 years of full immersion in league, rugby, touch rugby, and a new code called tag or ripper. His road to the World Cup took off last year when he was selected for the Auckland team, which then played teams from all the provinces at a national tournament. It was from this tournament that Jamie was selected to trial for the national team. Not only was he selected to play, but he was also selected to be the team captain, and the national coach! Amazing eh! Say’s Jamie “My real passion is for coaching children from our local school, Western Heights Primary, and also kids from the Waitamata Rugby club. I coach the under 13s for this club, and whole cluster of teams at Western Heights primary including rugby, league, and tag. I absolutely love working with the kids and their parents. Believe it or not, I am more nervous coaching the kids than I am playing senior for NZ! The Western Heights Primary tag rugby team recently won the West Auckland tag competition which means we to get to play other Auckland teams at Eden Park. Wow!” Now here’s the kicker – Jamie works for Turners and Growers. He starts work at 3am each morning, and works until 10am. He comes home, trains hard at the gym for his personal fitness and development, then coaches the kids after school and in the evenings!
Jamie Laufiso “Sometimes,” says Jamie “I spend 30 hours a week coaching and playing. I love my life. I only need 6 hours sleep a night, and the rest of the day is sheer joy. My wife Meredith and son Isaac are so happy to be living such an amazing life.” HHCNews: Jamie, bring back the world cup to NZ! (no pressure..ha ha).

8 WAYS TO IMPROVE YOUR CRUISE EXPERIENCE Welcome to our inaugural helloworld Travel page in the Community News. We are pleased to introduce ourselves as your local Travel and Cruise professionals. Helloworld Travel Henderson is an established Retail Travel Store under new management. Creating holidays is what we do best. Our friendly, experienced and passionate team will create your memorable holiday. We are proud of our exceptional customer service and attention to detail. Come meet the team and plan your dream holiday.
8 Ways to Improve Your Cruise Experience Every Cruise is a time to remember. Here are some tips from the experts to consider when you book your next cruise: 1. Get there the night before. This extends the fun and you won’t miss the ship departure. Experience the local destination and be fresh and ready to board your ship the next day. 2. Eat on Your Terms. Try the variety of specialty restaurants found on board ships for the relatively small extra charge to do so. You could even eat off the ship to experience something local if the ship is departing late.
3. Book a Repositioning Cruise. These are one-way cruises when ships move seasonally to different destinations. They can be great value, particularly if you enjoy lots of sea days, and you then just add airfares to and from the ports. 4. Enjoy the Free Activities. Movies – shown in cinemas during the day and often on giant poolside screens in the evening, live theatre shows, hosted games, libraries, gyms and sports courts are all free. The larger ships are competing with each other to add more free entertainment activities such as wave riders, rock climbing, dodgem cars and much more. 5. Take a Break From the Kids. On major cruise lines kids clubs are free for children aged three and above; qualified childcare staff organise games and activities while the grown-ups take a well-earned break. 6. Find a Quiet Spot. There’s often so much happening on board you can forget about those peaceful places where you can do absolutely nothing. There are few more relaxing experiences than watching a ship’s wake churning into the distance, gazing at the horizon, watching the sun set and rise, and seeing stars in skies that are many miles from landfall.
Bought to you by the BATCHELOR. Your local Real Estate Agent.
7. Book a Balcony Cabin. A balcony cabin does cost more than an inside or oceanview cabin, but for the extra few dollars a day a balcony cabin more than repays the cost in quality of cruise life – you have uncrowded sea and port views, fresh air whenever you want, and the luxury of privacy. Contact the award-winning team of Travel and Cruise Professionals at Helloworld Travel Henderson to book your next cruise experience.

BARFOOT & THOMPSON MENTAL FLOSS! More advice from Centenarians people who have lived to 100 or more. Researchers interviewed them and the following are two things they say contributed to their long life 1. A Positive Attitude Trudi Fletcher. A lifelong artist, remains an innovative painter at 100 and recently had a gallery exhibition showing off her new style. She credits her creative longevity to “attitude, attitude, attitude.” Almost all of the centenarians we spoke to believe a positive yet realistic attitude is critical throughout one’s life and described themselves as optimistic people. 2. Diet Here’s diet advice you may not have heard before: Eat like it’s 1960. Our centenarians were critical of today’s supersized portions; the majority advised just eating nutritious food in moderation. Only 20 percent said they had ever been on a specialized diet plan, although some had become vegetarians. Lillian Cox, 107, confided that in her 50s she became “quite heavy” but resolved to lose the weight, did so and kept it off by just eating less.

TOP INDIAN CHEF SETS UP IN HENDERSON Headhunted all his life for his skills as an Indian Chef, Manu Lal decided to go out on his own by launching his own business. Says Manu “In 2001 I was single and working in New Dehli as a chef in a top restaurant. Most of the top chefs in India are found in this city. One day a businessman approached me, telling me that he was setting up an Indian restaurant in Christchurch New Zealand, and would I be interested in being his chef. Well, I’d heard a lot about how beautiful New Zealand was, and because the contract he was offering me was so generous I took the opportunity with both hands. Together, we grew a top Indian restaurant. It was not long before other restaurant operators around NZ heard about me, and were offering me jobs. In 2005 I went back to New Delhi and I married my lovely wife, who I love so deeply, and since then we’ve had two children, who are now 11 and 9. To cut a very long story short, the offers from New Zealand for jobs kept coming and I moved from one Indian Restaurant to another over a 16 year period. The great sadness for me is that for many years between 2005 and now I have had to work in New Zealand without my family being here with me. I sent all my salary back to India so as to support them. Two years ago the NZ government granted my residency and my family moved from New Delhi to join me! I was so excited. This brings me to today. We have set up our own restaurant on the main Street of Henderson. I am putting all my experience and skills together to create the top Indian restaurant in Auckland. This is my goal. Is your rental property compliant? Are you aware of all the recent and upcoming compliance changes of rental properties in New Zealand?
Do you have smoke alarms on every level of your rental property? Are they within three metres of every bedroom? Are they checked annually and in-between tenancies? Has your insulation been checked and is it up to the required standard for your property’s area or do you have plans to have this done by 1st July 2019? Are you aware that if the above legal requirements are
not completed within the required timeframes, you could be fined $4,000.00 for each requirement? This penalty is payable to the tenant of the property. Have you read through the new Healthy Homes Standards for rental properties in New Zealand? Are you preparing for when the 2021 laws take effect? Have you ensured your rental property is complaint? It’s not scary for us – we deal with this all the time. But if you have neither the time, patience, skills or knowledge to complete all this with ease, let us help take the stress away and take care of your property for you.

2019 HEAD STUDENTS Jayda Heremia, Cody Cama, Suzianne Faeamani, Alex Lay A great term comes to an end at Henderson Intermediate School! As the term comes to an end it is good to look at all that has been achieved. The year got underway with a further 2 more teaching spaces being needed to accommodate roll growth. The School is very much “the school of choice” . January saw a huge number of people turned away because of them not living in the School’s zone. “I would love us to be able to take every student who wants to be at HIS, but unfortunately that is simply not possible. The Ministry of Education met with me and the Board Chairman Ron Crawford last week and they have promised us 3 new classes to start 2020.“ Principal
GREAT TERM 1
at HHIS Wendy Esera said. The school is delighted to have gained a new van this term through the Trusts Million Dollar Mission. A big thanks to the number of people who voted each day for the School. This van will provide the transport needed for the number of children who go out and about representing the School in all sorts of different things. As the Board Elections approach, Principal Wendy Esera says she is feeling
Useful Numbers
very excited at how almost all her Board want to stand again. “Intermediate Schools always find it hard to get people to stand for their Boards because of the fact that children are only at the school for two years. Having almost all the Board wanting to stay on, is a real credit to staff and to our parent community!” Wendy added. This year’s Head Students are a very articulate group, very confident and already making their mark on students at the School. 2019 is going to be a great year! (Right: Wendy Esera, Principal)

I am Dr. Lisa Fernandes, with over 20 years experience in the field of dentistry.
My husband and I migrated to this beautiful country in 2001 and ever since I have been practising in two dental clinics in Henderson and Mt. Roskill. I have now decided to open my own surgery closer to home in Henderson Heights, so as to maintain a balance
