I myself am an inveterate “Eskilstunian” and here are three of my favourite activities and places to visit in the summer.
The summer usually reaches its finale with a visit to Sweden’s largest veteran car market. The Eskilstuna veteran car day takes place at the end of August each year. Here you will find curios, antiques, “useful” things, combined with air-shows and lots of classic cars in all different shapes and sizes.

The Gyllenhielmska trail runs from the Årby forest nature reserve to Sundbyholm. Its 23 kilometres take you through cattle meadows, villages and primeval forest all the way to Lake Mälaren. Along the trail you can take a refreshing dip in Slätviken creek and once you reach Sundbyholm you can drop in at the pleasure boat harbour for refreshment or a bite to eat. The trail is for both hiking and running. Another “must” is a trip on the M/S Havsörnen from Torshälla harbour out to the lake Mälaren islands and to Ridön island.
I am certain that all visitors to Eskilstuna will find an event, place to visit or new experience to suit them perfectly. Have a good time!

Ship ahoy! Kids full of joy! Fun for the kids? You bet! We asked some children aged four to ten to act as our test patrol in Eskilstuna. Here’s the result. Te x t: Anna Björe // Photo: Per Groth
A
day in Eskilstuna can be both fun and challenging for the younger family members. Parken Zoo is a must for most visitors – but what else is there? Molly, aged 9, Noel 10, Mauritz 4, Mitian 7 and Vanna 9 tested the playgrounds in town for us. First stop being Leos Lekland. ‘We ran up a volcano and then had goes on lots of different slides. That was probably the best fun. And we rode around on tricycles.’ This was the gist of what Noel said when we met him and the others a few hours later. They had regained their breath after Leos Lekland and taken over Lilla Stadsmuseet (approx. translation: museum for children). Full speed ahead! The word “museum” doesn’t sound thrilling to everyone, but it was definitely exciting enough in this case. In this museum the kids could sail a steamboat, load gravel, run a market stall, cook food – all these activities being based on Eskilstuna’s history. A prime example of how useful entertainment can be. ‘It’s a good way of learning about what went on in the Middle Ages,’ asserted one of our test pilots, happily ignoring any differences between the Middle Ages, the nineteenth century and the 1950s. And why should he, when he’d only been around for less than a decade? The youngest test pilot, Mauritz thought that the wooden buses that could be driven over the floor were best of all. At the same time, Mitian was fully occupied in driving an excavator and digging up sand. For this job, coordination and timing are essential and he dug with full concentration.
‘The best thing is the ball race upstairs. You push ball bearings down a pipe and they race round a track on the ceiling.’ he said. This part of the museum belongs to Faktotum and they display Eskilstuna’s industrial history. Visitors can try out products made in Eskilstuna and learn more about the technology entailed. In yet another part of the museum there is a steam engine hall containing drivable steam engines, locomotives, steam fire-pump, traction engines, coining press and old bicycles. But the children have no more time for this on their busy day. Because now is the time for their last destination. The ZeroOneSix Skatepark where we are welcomed by Tobbe Karlsson. He shows as round and helps the children with their equipment and protective clothing. With its 2500 members the skateboard park enjoys a good life and expansion is in the offing. The association was founded in 199. ‘We have 1200 square metres of skating surface. You can use kick bikes, skateboards, inlines and BMX. Bikes you bring yourself, other equipment is loaned out here,’ said Tobbe Karlsson. Age limit? 6 most days, but on Mondays kids from 3 years of age and up can test out our adventures. Molly says its super fun to try out new tricks. She’s used a kick bike before. Nor does her friend Vanna mince her words: ‘This is the best thing I’ve ever done,’ she said, and swished away down the ramp.

Emma Stenlöf is still a junior, but last year she won the heptathlon at the Swedish Senior Championships.
S
chool, training, eating and sleeping. Being a top athlete and simultaneously studying requires energy and planning. Emma Stenlöf knows this. She competes in heptathlon, won the Swedish Junior Championships last year and is one of the Swedish entries for the summer European Junior Championships to be held in Eskilstuna.
Sweden, Finland and Estland. But competition will be tough at the coming July events. ‘Morgon Lake from UK, who won the World Junior Championships, is competing and she is very good. And there are two very competent Germans as well. They came first and third in the World Junior Championships when I won second place.
We meet on her only day off from training this week, during which she is swotting for an exam the next day. Emma is studying a natural history course in Västerås that includes athletics orientation, and textbooks are taking up a lot of her time. She will be 19 this summer and the European Junior Championships in July is one of the season’s most important events for her. Everyone expects Emma to win a top place – not least after her victory last year with the senior Swedish team, when she won the heptathlon event in Finland between
Women heptathlon athletes compete in seven events during the outdoor season. As everyone knows who followed the successful Carolina Klüft when she was active. Whether or not Emma can reach such heights is still written in the stars, but this is her ambition. ‘I expect everyone who trains and competes at this level has the same ambition. I want to be world’s best,’ she said. That she has talent and the will to train is very clear. For heptathlon, the athlete needs to be strong, fast, agile and have the

right technique in all events. Consequently the training program has to be balanced to provide maximum performance, irrespective of whether this in running, jumping or throwing. ‘Sometimes you need to slow down during training, in order to improve technique. At the moment I’m practising sprint and throwing event techniques. I have four different coaches, or actually five, because I have a special coach for high jump sometimes. Emma’s big sister took up athletics when they were smaller, and her little sister tagged along. The family is still supportive, and the parents frequently attend competitions. This summer they might see their daughter break the 6000-point limit. At the time of writing her personal best is 5795. If she tops this at the European Junior Championships, that could be a world-beater.

Expect a festival atmosphere in Eskilstuna during the European Junior Championships in athletics. ‘We’re hoping for a wonderful atmosphere and masses of inspiration for all competitors,’ said project manager, Karin Grute Movin.
The World Junior Championships are opened on the 15 July at Fristadstorget in Eskilstuna.

n Wednesday night the 15th of July the European Junior Championships will open in Fristadstorget in Eskilstuna with a festive show of artists and performances. Followed by a fourdays of athletic events with 1000 participants and a big public. The organisers are working hard to ensure the occasion will be a great success. ‘The hotels are all full – including in the neighbouring towns – and participants and their teams need transport, food and facilities for training, warming up and competing. No one can avoid noticing there are European Junior Championships taking place in Eskilstuna,’ said Karin Grute Movin. Naturally, from the sports point of view, the events put on at Ekängens athletics stadium are a high point of the year. An opportunity to watch young athletes who could easily become the shining stars of tomorrow. Many are well on the way already. The sprinter Irene Eklund and heptathlon athlete Emma Stenlöf are two
Swedish favourites. At the time of going to print, the identity of the other Swedes qualified to participate was not yet certain, but we do know that the Swedish group will comprise some 50 athletes. ‘This is a big happening for Eskilstuna. It became clear that the municipality would be hosting the championships back in May 2013, and since then we’ve been working on the preparations. There are two of us working full time, plus a committee and two work groups, who put in a lot of effort. For the actual championships we are hoping for a large number of volunteers. The biggest challenge for the organisers is to get all transportation operating smoothly and ensure the timetable works. The weather too of course, is important – sunshine and warmth would be ideal. What are you looking forward to most? ‘Really exciting athletic events and a wonderful atmosphere among both competitors and public,’ said Karin Grute Movin.

AIMING FOR THE FINALS
With the stately river running slowly by, the lush greenery of the parks and the fragrance of summer flowers, we can confidently claim that Eskilstuna’s Å-quarter marathon is Sweden’s most beautiful. On Saturday the 13th of June the air will ring to the starting shot of the fifth annual run in a row. The track is 10,549 metres long, and stretches along the river with start and finish in central Eskilstuna. The route runs through a large part of the town, from the houses of Gamla Stan, the old quarter, to the Vilsta recreation park and the town centre itself. The organisers are hoping for a record number of runners this year once again. Last year the event hosted almost 3000. Both elite athletes and those just out to enjoy some exercise are welcome to take part. Lilla Å-loppet, is a parallel running event for children up to 12 years of age, and starts at 12.00, with a choice of either an 800 or a 1200 metre run.
The Eskilstuna Guif handball team has played successfully in the elite series for many years. The association target for the men’s team is to always be among Sweden’s top four, and to obtain a position among the best teams in Scandinavia.
IMPRESSIVE WOMEN’S FOOTBALL TEAM Eskilstuna United is a newcomer to the Premier Division of the Woman’s Swedish Football League, with an average attendance in excess of 2000 spectators. This compares well with the Premier Division’s general average of 800 spectators. And it impresses national team manager, Pia Sundhage. When Sweden met Switzerland in a friendly game in early April 2015, the match was played on United’s home ground, the Tunavallen stadium. ‘Lots of people dream about patting a wild animal. But wild animals don’t appreciate it – although some of them we can visit,’ said Maria Montelius, who works at Parken Zoo.
P
arken Zoo in Eskilstuna contains tame rabbits, miniature pigs, sheep and guinea pigs that can be stroked and hugged. But the wild animals are not pets, no matter how cute and cuddly they might look. Handling wild animals incorrectly can have truly disastrous results. This is explained to us by Maria Montelius, who is a qualified biologist and has worked at Parken Zoo as a zoo-keeper for almost three years. ‘Tank is an exception among wild animals, he doesn’t mind being stroked,’ she said, and introduces us to this mighty Aldabra turtle. He weighs 160 kilograms and reached pensionable age a long time ago. ‘He’s at least 68, but probably nearer 80,’ said Maria Montelius, and stroked the friendly turtle carefully.

Tank is one of the approximately 80 different species living at Parken Zoo at the moment. The purpose of putting animals in a zoo is – apart from visitors being given the opportunity to admire and learn from them – to preserve them for the future, because many of them are threatened with extinction in their natural wild habitats. The idea is that these animals, provided there are any natural environments left in the world, will be able to participant in a “re-stocking” project. This principle does not only benefit the animals as individuals, but also benefits people and nature overall. When all is said and done, we all live in a biological cycle in which we are interdependent to a far greater extent than most people realise. However, releasing animals back into the wild is not an easy task, and it can take time. ‘Many animals come from environments which have now been destroyed by humans or where they are liable to be killed by poachers. Consequently there is

Most of it is routine such as feeding, cleaning and making health checks, but some times emergency situations arise which need to be dealt with quickly. ‘We put a lot of time each day into making the days of the animals varied and stimulating as possible. This is called “enrichment”. Animals are to be able to exercise their natural behaviours and all their senses need to be stimulated in various ways. For example, we work with such things as enclosure design, interiors, group compilation and different ways of feeding the animals,’ she said.

Only a few weeks old and it will be several months before this baby ventures out on its own adventures. ‘Apes are like humans in appearance, and they are highly intelligent. They are creative and frequently surprise us zookeepers with their various antics. This is one of the things that makes it so exciting to meet them on a daily basis.’

The most keen on swimming 3 The Asian wild dog looks like a fox in both colour and in the way it moves. It has an unusual repertoire of song, which can most closely be described as chatter, wining, squeaking, whistling and growling. And it loves to swim in its pool. Wild dogs hunt in packs and as a team can fell a prey weighing up to ten times as much as themselves. A sia : India , Indone sia and M alay sia .
The most peculiar 4 Fossas are the largest predatory animals in Madagascar. Many people think they look like a mix of cat, dog and bear. But in fact they belong to an entirely different predatory animal family known as Eupleridae. The body of the fossa is well adapted for life up in the trees. Its back legs are longer than its front legs, this making it easier to climb trees and jump from branch to branch. The fossa uses its tail, which is equal in length to the rest of its body, to keep its balance when hopping around in the treetops.
The most powerful 1 The jaguar comes from South America. It is fed 3 times a day during the week and it applies its enormously powerful jaws to tear pieces of meat apart. The jaguar is a real power package, with large muscles that ripple beneath its beautiful coat. This year’s Melodifestival (the Swedish section of the European Song Contest) winner, Måns Zelmerlöw, will be appearing at Parken Zoo and taking over the Stora-scenen stage on Sunday the 12th of July. His winning number “Heroes” is thought by many to be the best entry for several years, and as having a good chance out in Europe. The popular singer himself says:
And then there is Carola. Who takes everyone by storm and broke the public attendance record at Parken Zoo in 1983. Now she’s back! Organiser Patrik Kolar remembers that midsummer Sunday 32 years ago. ‘Carola was my first concert. I was four and perched on dad’s shoulders. I was so delighted with “Mickey”, I called my little puppy at my granny’s place in Croatia Mickey. Parken Zoo marketing manager, Camilla Delac was not at home, but also has fond memories. ‘I was given her first vinyl LP and I loved “Tommy tycker om mig.’ As a ten-year old I thought she was very pretty and had such lovely skin… On Friday the 10th of July it will be time once again. No prizes for guessing this is bound to be a huge family party.

Micke Lönngren, events manager at Destination Eskilstuna, gets very busy in the summer. He is responsible for the Eskilstuna Park festival 6-8 August and Spring Pride on the 4th weekend in May. On top of this, he makes sure participants and public at the Junior European Masters in athletics are entertained properly in the evenings. ‘Oh yes – shows every night during the European Masters, at the EM village, Fristadstorget,’ he says. The environmentally awarded Park festival, with free entrance, is now in its third year and generates a strong focus on Strömsholmen, with its twin stages and the river. ‘We are hoping for 20,000 visitors and are getting off to a jump start with the Rix FM Festival on Thursday night, with full speed ahead through both Friday and Saturday nights. This year’s Spring Pride features a fully packed Saturday featuring the big parade and a performance by two very famous “Schlager” icons, Arja Saijonmaa and Magnus Carlsson. The Pride centre is located at Fristadstorget and the parade starts off from the Elite hotel. Other events include seminars, outdoor cinema and more on the Pride Days program.
Accordion fans flock to Vilsta and the traditional accordion players’ meeting, Smedraget on the 27th of June. Time for “Månsken over Ängermanälven” and other favourites. SEEGERS returns TO MARY’S IMPRESSIVE COLLECTION OF MUSICIANS IN NÄSHULTA The village show that became a festival. ‘We are celebrating our ten year anniversary and putting extra effort into this particular festival with the help of our sponsors, some 60 volunteers and the amazing enthusiasm of the village as a whole. This really is a fully functional popular movement. Chair of the Näshulta cultural association, Eric Lindman, is enthusiastic over this year’s version of Näshulta cultural days. As well as the legendary rock band Eldkvarn, the program features such names as Tina Ahlin and Orsa Spelman along with Arja Saijonmaa’s bigband Astoria. Others include the popular vocal group Vibafemba and the local choir Kör Hårt, who have been in the festival right from the start. Patrik Kolar, a successful musician himself, is a busy concert organiser in Eskilstuna all year round. In summer he is involved with concerts featuring Carola and Thomas Ledin and also looks after the popular music artist evenings at Mary’s café in the country. This year’s program at Mary’s features a return visit by country music star Doug Seegers. He burst into stardom last year and tickets for his performance at Mary’s sold out in no time. Seegers will be appearing on the 30th of June. Other music artists include legendary organist Merit Hemmingson on the 26th of June and Sophie Zeimani on the 14th of August. ‘Music evenings at Mary’s are supported by a very loyal and regular public,’ says Patrick Kolar.
Is there a difference in organising in the summer from the rest of the year? ‘Yes, there can be. Some artists I might feel really fit in with a summer milieu like Mary’s, where it feels as if they’re playing at home in their own garden. ‘On the other hand, a poet like Bruno K Oijer is better suited to the Royal Cinema on a November night, just to take one example. The right performer in the right place is always best.’

ood is important to us, as is made very apparent by the huge number of food programs on TV. But how do you select ingredients for dinner? Do you think about where the food comes from, how it has been produced and stored? If you are like the average Swede, you check the declaration of contents and origin. Because we are becoming increasingly aware that food should be produced in a way good for our health and environment. “Local produce” is now a favourite slogan. This cuts down on transport while benefitting local industry. 18 ESKILSTUNA BESÖKSMAGASIN 2015
Consequently we asked Tomas “Toffsy” Sifarow to put together a special Torshälla menu using our excellent locally produced raw materials. He is a chef who has worked at top-rated restaurants in Sweden and abroad. Right now, he runs the conference, reception and entertainment facilities at the fine old Saga cinema in Torshälla. Additionally, this year he opened up a small restaurant behind the Cinema, “Saga Bakfickan”. We met here to test the Torshälla menu. Delicious smells greet us in the
doorway. Roast chicken for the main dish, looking like a large and mouth-watering toffee. With a starter of freshly caught perch-pike. “Raw materials are important to successful cooking. I’m keen on making use of all the wonderful root vegetables grown in our country. They’re nutritious, cheap and tasty. It’s a great pity that the old cookery traditions have almost disappeared. There are not many people nowadays who know how to prepare brisket of beef with mashed turnips,” Tomas said. He went on to reveal a secret behind a really successful dinner – stock. When he works he always has a pot of aromatic stock bubbling on the stove.

Cut the fillets into 10 pieces. Turn in crushed Sichuan pepper and a pinch of sea salt. Smoke in alder chips in a smoker for 10 minutes. Allow to cool. Boil up 150 g of parsnip and 50g of artichoke in vegetable stock. When soft siphon off the stock (keep for the sauce), mix with 50g of butter and a spoonful of heavy cream. Finish off with a few drops of truffle oil. Cut fish into slices & pour the purée around the fish. Garnish with home grown (organic) herbs such as rosemary and Spanish peppers (optional).

“Chuck in what you fancy. This pot contains white wine, peas and root vegetables. You can use it for sauces, blanching vegetables, make purée, and a whole lot of other things.” He prefers honey and raw sugar for sweeteners and real butter and rape oil for frying – a combo that enhances taste and maintains high temperatures. “Smell this rape oil, it smells almost like butter. And has a lovely yellow colour. Compare it with this olive oil here, what a difference! I almost always use rape oil, olive oil only occasionally,” he said. The chicken is almost ready and the time has come for tasting and taking pictures. Tempted? The recipe is above – just start cooking!

It began when her son ate badly when he was small. Now Helena Larsson has baked gluten-free bread for almost 30 years in her own bakery. ‘Sourdough bread is one of the new favourites,’ she says.
T
he bakery is on the farm, and which in turn lies far out in the countryside, about 10 kilometres from Eskilstuna. Helena Larsson works in the bakery most days. She passed her pensionable age quite some time ago, but that doesn’t bother her. She has lots of work because the demand for gluten-free bread continues to rise. ‘Demand has become very noticeable,’ she says. ‘Especially for plain bread.’
The same day we are to meet there is an announcement on the national news that more and more people are choosing 20 ESKILSTUNA BESÖKSMAGASIN 2015
to eat gluten-free products. Sales have increased by around 25 percent. If this is because more people have discovered their intolerance – the number of unrecorded cases is considerable – or if more have become intolerant, is impossible to say. What is clear is that many people are choosing to buy food that does not contain rye, wheat or corn. These cereals contain the protein called gluten, which can damage the small intestine in some people. If you are gluten intolerant and choose to eat gluten free food, you’ll find there is a very real improvement. Stomachaches disappear, nutrition intake picks up and stamina returns. Life becomes full of life once again.
This is how it was for the Larsson family. When their son Karl was diagnosed and needed to change his diet, his mother and father followed suit. They had all been feeling tired, and suddenly began to regain their energy.
‘It used to be like living with the handbrake on,’ said Helena Larsson. Gluten works as a binding agent and makes bread fluffy. Consequently, it is something of a challenge to bake without it. All those who have tried know that without gluten, bread tends to be dry and crumbly. But Helena now fully masters the art of gluten-free baking. ‘When I started Kjula Hembageri I began baking “Lena’s rolls”. They are still my favourite,’ she said.
Fibre, cold-pressed rape oil and lots of eggs give her bread shape and colour. And herbs are important. Once the bread has been baked it is left for a day before being sliced and put in the freezer. When serving all that is needed is careful de-freezing, or light toasting. It turns out just like newly baked, fresh bread. There is now a large selection of gluten-free produce in ordinary grocery shops. It is more expensive than “ordinary food”, but the range of products for those who need them is now wide-ranging. It was a different story when the Larssons first began to search for gluten-free products in the 1980s. ‘When Karl became poorly I began to experiment with baking my own bread. I opened the bakery in 1998 and we now have 50 different kinds of bread and confectionary in our range, from plain bread to cakes and rolls. We don’t even use wheat starch in our bread, because some people are intolerant to that too,’ she said.
More good things for the stomach
FOOD FROM THE WHOLE WIDE WORLD Food and handicrafts from 15 different countries are on offer at the International Street Market in Eskilstuna. This popular food market will be held in new Fristadstorget, in the town centre, now ready after a complete rebuild. The market lasts for four days, from the 27th to the 30th of May, and keeps the same opening hours as the Eskilstuna shops in the town centre.
Have you any advice to give those who would like to try gluten-free baking? ‘Use Jytte flour, this is stocked in most shops and is gluten-free. Replace the wheat flour used in standard recipes with two thirds of Jytte flour. Keep the other ingredients and bake according to the recipe. Then you’ll be able to eat your own homemade gluten-free bread.’
MANY PEOPLE ARE GLUTEN INTOLERANT More people are inclined to be gluten-intolerant in Sweden than in other countries, according to the researchers. But only one in three are diagnosed, so the number of unrecorded cases is considerable. Avoid gluten and be healthy.
A TASTE OF NUTS You can buy delicious pastries from the Middle East from Fahed Jusef and his wife Aynour Ramadan. They opened their own bakery and café in 2014 – Hem Baklawa. ‘We had our own bakery in Syria and have now opened Eskilstuna’s first bakery selling exotic specialities,’ said Fahed Jusef. ‘Baklawa is their speciality, made of layered puff pastry filled with nuts. Despite her 73 years, she has no intention to stop expanding. Up to five people work in the bakery. ‘It feels very satisfying to help those who otherwise would not feel well. The stomach affects the whole person so much more than people realise. I read most of what I can find on the subject. I would be able to talk about it forever,’ she said, and laughed.

KANU FAHREN AUF DEM FLUSS Der Fluss Eskilstuna verläuft zwischen dem See Hjälmaren und dem Mälarsee und ist 30 Kilometer lang. Die Strömung ist leicht und die Wasserstraße hat drei Schleusen. Es gibt nicht weniger als sechs Kanuaufzüge auf der Strecke zwischen Skogstorp und Torshälla, deshalb wird ein Kanu-Caddy empfohlen. Der Fluß fließt bei Torshälla - westlich von Sundbyholm - in den Mälarsee. Für diejenigen, die ein Schiff bevorzugen, befährt während der Sommermonate die St. Olof den Fluss.

The categories are divided from A, with a maximum hands height of 10.5 h (107 cm), up to D, with a maximum hands height of 14.5 h (148 cm). Jumping courses are graded according to difficulty and the jumps are of varying heights. Classifications are divided up into three grades of difficulty and different heights.

A quartet of girls is practicing riding in the middle of a bitterly cold winter. Their goal is the Swedish Pony Riding Championships to be held in Eskilstuna this summer. ‘Being with horses is the most fun in the world,’ they assert.
T
he sun shines on the white snow and the breeze is freezing. July, the summer and warm weather seem a lifetime away, but the summer is what they’re training for – Ingrid Ravik, Alice Lindgren, Ella Björklund and Kajsa Björe. The idea is that they will compete in the Swedish pony jumping Championships in Sundbyholm, a facility situated ten kilometres outside Eskilstuna. A well-known trotting centre which has developed into a general centre for equestrian sports. 26 ESKILSTUNA BESÖKSMAGASIN 2015
The championships are six months away when we meet the girls and many days of training and work in the stables lie before them. They have just completed a training session in the adjacent manege, and ride obligingly out onto the field so our photographer can take some good pictures. A frozen crust has formed on the snow, but does not deter the ponies and their riders. They love to ride and jumping especially. Both high and fast – it’s a question of timing acceleration, braking and steering skilfully enough for the pony to clear the jump. ‘This is not only about competing. First you have to learn how to ride. Understand the pony and learn all the technique,’ said Kajsa Björe. Ingrid Ravik, who lives in Skövde, agrees.
‘You don’t get anywhere without working at it. If you have a pony that’s spirited and difficult, you learn a lot more,’ she said. There’s has been a life with horses since they were small, all except for 15-year old Alice who has been riding for barely two years. In that time she has competed for eighteen months, including two Swedish Championships and now with a third in her sights. She first rode at riding school and now has her own horses at home on the farm to which she moved with Morgan, her father. ‘Grandpa had trotters, but that’s the only previous connection with horses we have,’ she said. The beautiful Connemara pony she will be riding in the Swedish Champion ships is named Moonlight Blue. ‘Spending time at the stables is always fun. No matter if its dark

Sundbyholm is the first trotting track in the country to be environmentally certified (EkoTrav). Made-to-measure, environ mentally friendly solutions for power supply, heating and waste disposal reduce energy consumption and the negative impact on the environment. Here are some of things going on.

and cold outside, I always enjoy it,’ she said. They’re at the stables seven days a week, and “horse-free” days are rare. Even if the ponies need to rest betweenwhiles, they always need attention. Looking after a four-footed friend is as big a job as the riding itself. This is where trust and communication between horse and rider is built up; without this, nothing works. The parents confirm that it is the girls who have the ambition and drive, although their families provide support in the shape of driving them around and generally helping out. The girls plan, book training sessions and build-up a very strict discipline, which they will benefit from later on in life. School comes first, followed by riding, and the days have to be carefully planned so there is enough time for both.
‘There’s such a good feeling about being with horses, They are always present, they are loyal and they are always there for you in all situations,’ said Ella Björklund, who was riding her Pony, Hamalee Gem, when we met. If she and the other three girls are to make it to The Swedish Championships again in Sundbyholm this summer, then everything up to then has to run like clockwork. They are well aware of this. Both they and their ponies must be intact and well prepared for all that such a tough competition entails. Being a horse rider is being part of a whole. You and the horse – and neither can perform without the other.

e meet in her studio in central Stockholm, with its tall windows and masses of wonderful light. Per the photographer is happy, he could hardly wish for better conditions. And to top it all, the room is full of the most lovely, gossamer light dresses and frocks imaginable. Elsa Billgren is a TV star from the Swedish television home decorating show “Äntligen Hemma” and the author of several books about vintage and beautiful old items. Both her mother, Helene and her father, Ernst are artists, and it was very natural for her to notice and appreciate the aesthetics of objects. Her hobby gradually grew into a job. Along with the home decorating TV show, her blog about old things and helping others to uncover bargains, she rents out her fine old vintage fashion clothing. In this way, other people beside herself can enjoy them too. Recycling in its true meaning. ‘I’ve rented out my own wedding dress five times. I like the thought that others can enjoy wearing it – I can sleep soundly at night. The dress is so well worn now it’s showing signs of wear and tear, but that doesn’t matter, ‘ she said. ‘One of my blog readers asked if they could use my dresses and that’s how it all started. So now I share my dresses with other people. But that’s only a part of what I do; I like to have a mixed palette to occupy me during the working week. and Eskilstuna, have come across her rummaging in second-hand shops. In summer she and her husband Pontus de Wolfe frequently spend time with his mother, who lives just outside Strängnäs, and take the chance to hunt for local bargains. ‘I like the smell of old things better than the new. I think new articles just smell peculiar. ‘Swedish is a treasure chest of old booty. In Europe, where war has raged so frequently, old possessions are hard to come by. My mother, my sister and I go to jumble sales every weekend. Her motto is to have the courage to admit what one really likes. To find your own style and really stick to it. Not just follow the herd. ‘When you visit a shop selling new fashions, you’re sure to come out with something someone else has picked out for you, even if you think you’ve chosen it yourself. But the only articles in that kind of shop are fashionable at that moment, nothing else. So, in fact, you didn’t choose what you bought yourself. I think people should make an effort to develop themselves. Have courage, be inquisitive, and listen to your own voice. Second-hand can be trendy too ‘I know what’s in for the moment, what things are valuable. You get to know. Right now the new green vogue reigns. Back to nature. Sewing. Growing perennials. Letting things take time. Elsa is a living advertisement for her own lifestyle philosophy. She always dresses in charming old dresses –
never in trousers. Lots of colour and originality. The new gadgets she owns are stylish. Like the camera she uses to take pictures for her blog. This is high-tech but looks old. She is far from conservative, on the contrary, but she believes we can learn a lot from history. ‘Make use of what is beautiful and well-made,’ she advises.

Retro. Was popular here in Sweden in the 1980s. We liked the 50s intensely, and manufactured and used new articles exuding 50s atmosphere and appearance. Nowadays people are interested in vintage. Looking out for genuinely old, high quality articles and reusing them.

ReTuna - 5000 square metres of floor space in Eskilstuna transformed into a galleria where companies and organisations with recycling or environment work profiles can rent space. And directly adjacent to this, a new, large recycling centre is to be built. The idea is that those who visit the recycling centre, can first take your waste and unwanted belongings for a tour of the galleria. Here you can give in those things that can be recycled. This could be clothing, tools, furniture etc. and which can be refined and sold by the operations in the galleria. ReTuna is situated opposite the Ekeby wetlands and the old DHL warehouse. Completion is scheduled for June 2015.

This is the route all municipal kitchens in Eskilstuna are taking. At Stenby primary school, for example, 70 percent of food is organic.

T
hat which all began as being very interested in engineering, has grown into a passion. As well as repairing engines and gearboxes, he sits happily in front of the sewing machine, tailoring interiors for his old treasures. He recalls the successful years with the drag-racing circus in the 1970s and 80s, driving powerful Corvettes, with both pleasure and pride. ‘Why are cars and engines so much fun? I grew up in the 50s, a heyday for American cars. These days, most cars look more or less the same. High standards of crash-proofing and environmental regulations have left their mark,’ he said. ‘Compare a Chrysler 58 with a Volvo PV 58 and you’ll hear a difference. The Chrysler is powered by a 300 hp V8 with a fantastic sound. That was it for me!’
He has eleven wonderful veteran cars in the garage. Like this Cadillac from 1946. ‘It’s a year younger than me,’ said Janne “Juan” Johansson.
The beautiful car in the picture is a relatively new addition to the collection. A Cadillac 46, series 62 Coupé, complete with “gangster shade” and more. He bought it a few years back as a renovation project. Last summer, Anette, his sambo, drove the car at a ladies’ rally in Rättvik – dressed in suitable 1946 fashion – and won! The car most Eskilstunians associate with car enthusiast “Juan” is his white Chrysler Cabriolet. He has now owned this for 48 years, since 1967. In addition he and Anette have another ten veteran cars hidden away at home, all of which are equally pleasing on the eye and ear. The picture of the car was taken in Sundbyholm. KJULA DRAGWAY CELEBRATES
BIG DRIFTING COMPETITION
This summer the Kjula drag racing track celebrates its tenth anniversary. Six events in the popular Pistonhead Open 2015 will take place – the first on 16 – 17 May. In addition, there will be a large air show on Saturday the 30 May, featuring Viggen, Hawker Hunter, Vampire and others, and a car show “Parking Lot Battle” will be held each Saturday. CANOEING ON THE RIVER The Eskilstuna River runs between lakes Hjälmaren and Mälaren and is 30 kilometres in length. The current is light and the waterway has three locks. There are no less than six lifts for canoes on the stretch between Skogstorp and Torshälla, so a canoe caddy is recommended. The river runs out in lake Mälaren at Torshälla – west of Sundbyholm. For those who prefer to take a boat, the S.t Olof traffics the river during the summer months.
