Welcome It is with great privilege that on behalf of the steering group I welcome you to Business Week 2012. As a team of volunteers we are hugely thankful that so many organisations have chosen to take part in this unique programme of events; it is the event holders that make Biz Week what it is and it couldn’t exist without this support.

Hull and East Yorkshire C O M M U N I T Y F O U N D AT I O N

Biz Week is special because of the energy, enthusiasm and commitment all the communities of the Humber bring to it. The voluntary nature of the Steering group is a good example of people prepared to

go the extra mile to showcase what our part of the world has to offer. It brings together the public, private and third sector communities in a way that is the envy of other places. By coming together we categorically state that the Humber is open for business, that it’s a great place to do business and a great place to live. It proves that regardless of sector when everybody has the best interests of their community running through their veins magnificent things can happen.

I’m simply looking forward to delivering an exciting 2012 week, building and growing on the successful week in 2011 and keeping it fresh for everyone who attends. I hope that you agree that this brochure sets out a tremendous line-up and that you find attending many of to be to be a hugely rewarding experience.

Communications Partner When eskimosoup came on board as communications partner last year, we weren’t sure what we’d got ourselves into though pretty quickly we figured it was something fantastic. I think 40 events taking place in a little over a week shows that Biz Week has achieved that ‘special vibe’ that makes people want to be a part of the action. Having the honour of working with some of the best communicators in the Humber we have observed that as ‘traditional’ media converges with and compliments social media a whole new level of networking exists amongst event organisers and attendees

meaning that the business community is better connected than ever. As Tim Sanders said at the first YIBC event in Hull in 2005; “Your network is your net worth!” This network genuinely can use Biz Week as a tool to help all businesses in our region; by talking positively about Biz Week and its many great events to people we meet and through social media we can create a fascination from key people all over the globe wanting to understand what is about the Humber that enables us to build and sustain the world’s largest festival of business.

Taking part is easy, through Twitter (#bizweek), LinkedIn, Facebook, The Bizniz or any other media you use. We’ll pull a feed of comments onto the home page Biz Week website which will be featured at participating events during the week. I hope that you enjoy a fantastic Biz Week 2012 and thank everyone that is able to help spread the word to help enhance the positive perception of the Humber region. Please visit www.bizweek.biz for all the latest news.

Foreword As Chair of Humber Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) I was delighted to be asked to write this foreword for Bizweek 2012. I can’t help but notice how the Humber Business Week has grown in stature over the years to become a major week of excellence in the Humber-wide annual business calendar. There can be no doubt that the Humber has been experiencing difficult economic times, with unemployment, rising costs and the knock-on effect of the banking crisis continuing to cause particular concern. However, the Humber sub-region has much to offer, and the LEP is playing a major in helping to reinvigourate the local economy. Most noticeably, we have the largest Enterprise Zone in the UK, and our strategic location in proximity to the huge wind farms, coupled with our local expertise in renewable energy means we are well-placed to attract the major players in this, the fastest growing, new industry.

A thank you to our supporters

Hugh Rice Jewellers Brochure Sponsor

This in turn could lead to the generation of thousands of jobs, not only directly in renewable energy, but also in the supply chain that services that industry. In the longer term, we see the development of a super-cluster of companies involved in all aspects renewable energy on the Humber, with the region taking a world-class lead. Coupled with the existing chemicals, ports and logistics expertise in the sub-region, I have nothing but enthusiasm for the longerterm prospects of the Humber, and I have every confidence that this will be reflected in the excellent work carried out by Biz Week.

Success in E-commerce: A step-by-step proven approach The internet contributes to 8.3% of the UK economy; bigger than the healthcare, construction or education sectors. Some 13.5% of all purchases were done over the internet in 2010 and this is projected to rise to 23% by 2016. So, it stands to reason that whether you are starting a new business or looking at ways to make an existing one more profitable; making money online is often an attractive proposition! But with so many “online gurus”, “guaranteed quick wins” and “amazing e-commerce products” it’s hard to separate the wheat from the chaff meaning that good businesses often stall by setting off on a path that isn’t right for them. This event provides jargon free and honest experiences, advice and step-by-step instruction to building a successful e-commerce business.

When: 9:30 - 11:30 am Where: Brough Business Centre Price: FREE Who should be there Business owners, senior marketers and anyone interested in running an online business. How to book: Call 01482 223866 or email hello@eskimosoup.co.uk

The Business Week Charitable Foundation The Business Week Charitable Foundation is a new approach to supporting local activities and addressing local needs. Launched in Business Week 2011, the Charitable Foundation is active throughout the year and provides a mechanism to direct resources where they are needed most as well as building a sustainable source of funding for local community activity in years to come. Grants are relatively small (generally up to a maximum of £500) with the objective that small grants can, if properly directed, make a big difference. The Business Week Charitable Foundation is operated through Hull and East Yorkshire Community Foundation (registered charity no. 1130700) and is managed by a Steering Group made up of Business Week stakeholders and chaired by Charles Lewis. The Steering Group will ensure that resources are directed where they can have significant impact and that the Charitable Foundation is accountable to the Business Week community. During 2011/12 organisations supported have included: • Priory Enterprises (Bridlington) - to provide for a butterfly tree mural through an interactive activity for individuals with learning and/or physical disabilities. • North Ferriby Riding for Disabled – to facilitate the organisation and creation of a “Santa’s Grotto’” as a celebration and to promote the work of the organisation to the wider public. • VIP Luncheon (Withernsea) – purchase traditional tabletop games to aid social interaction, improve memory and reduce a sense of isolation amongst elderly people. In order to support the Charitable Foundation, there will be fundraising events and activities throughout Business Week itself (and beyond) as well as an opportunity for you to donate directly through Hull and East Yorkshire Community. If you would like to donate or if you are interested in holding a fundraising event or if you would like to get involved in the Steering Group or contribute in any other way then please contact Nigel Mills using the contact details below: Hull and East Yorkshire Community Foundation, Suffolk Chambers, Scale Lane, Hull, HU1 1LA E: NigelM@HEYCF.co.uk T: 01482 320021
