alongside the road make the trip delightful. Further excitement is waiting in Entoto Museum, which contains articles of great quality and historical significance. The drum that announced the march of Adwa against the Italian invasion, the bed Menelik II used while in Ankober, a crown and a Persian carpet are just a few of the many exhibits depicting Entoto’s glorious past. The panoramic view of the city and the surrounding areas, the beautiful architectural style of Archangel Raguel and St. Mary churches, and a visit to Menelik’s old palace add to an experience the visitor will cherish.
Ethnographic Museum
The Institute of Ethiopian Studies (IES) was established in 1963 with three major components: a research and publications unit, a library, and a museum. The aim of the institute is to collect documents, analyze and disseminate knowledge about languages, cultures and the history of Ethiopia. As Ethiopia is a cradle of mankind, a crossroads of cultures and civilizations, it is known as “a museum of nationalities”. This museum, therefore, shoulders the responsibility of capturing the heritage of the past and presenting it for posterity. The main focus of the museum is traditional art and
material culture of nationalities. The IES Museum brings the many diverse ethnic groups of Ethiopia under one roof. The layout follows the story of life from birth to death, and beyond, and how the different stages of life are viewed and experienced by different ethnic groups in Ethiopia. Appropriately, the museum is in the old palace, Genete Le’ul, of the late Emperor Haile Selassie, a building that welcomes all visitors with dignity and grace. The museum is accommodated on two floors, comprising the bedroom of the late Emperor and ethnographic section on the lower floor and the art gallery on the upper floor. The bedroom reminds us that the building was once a palace in the formative period of modern Ethiopia. It is the first modern palace imitating European style. We see here the bed, which Emperor Haile Selassie used for more than ten years, and some personal gifts received by the late Emperor. The reception hall now hosts ethnographic items of more than 80 language groups. It is divided into two parts. The first introduces the general socio-economic conditions of the country and displays production tools and some techniques of craftsmen. The second part provides a quick visit through Ethiopia. Here, assorted items from each region in the country are represented. Although the space is not large enough to show all the beauty and diversity of the culture of Ethiopia, it AMRAN ETHIOPIA TOUR AND TRAVEL | [ADD]

creates a strong urge to know more about it. The second floor is a gallery where the ‘high art’ of the country is displayed. The exhibit concentrates on the history of sacred, and a few examples of the secular, art of Ethiopia. The time span of some items could go as far back as the 14th century
National Museum
The Ethiopian National Museum is one of the leading Museum institutions of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia. It is the oldest, the largest and the richest in its collection, not only of the entire Nation, but through out Sub-Saharan Africa. It studies and provides documentation about the culture of the Nation from prehistoric until the present. It provides also technical advice to other Museums through out Ethiopia. It was founded at 1936/37 and during its 56 years of
existence it has changed its location three times. At the beginning, it was located at the national library, and then it moved to the lounge of the National Bank. Finally it moved in the old building of the present compound which was formerly the ministry of foreign affairs. Since 1999 the Ethiopian National Museum, displays its collection in the new building which was purposely built for it! At first, the National Museum started displaying a few collections donated by the royal family and their close associates. At present, the National Museum displays numerous artifacts mainly from archaeology. The national museum of Ethiopia has ethnographical, traditional and contemporary art exhibits and historical relics. The present exhibition halls are divided in four sections: 1. The basement is devoted to paleontology and prehistory. 2. The first floor displays culture items from ancient, medieval and contemporary Ethiopian societies respectively. 3. The second floor is devoted to traditional and contemporary Ethiopian art. 4. At the third floor visitors have good opportunity to see the mosaic AMRAN ETHIOPIA TOUR AND TRAVEL | [ADD]

of ethnographic records of the country. St. George Cathedral Museum
Is an Orthodox cathedral in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. It is noted for its distinctive octagonal form. It is located at the northern end of Churchill Road in the city. Designed by Sebastiano Castagna and built by Italian prisoners of war defeated at Adwa in 1896, it was named after St. George, after the Tabot (Ark) of the church was carried to the Battle of Adwa against the Italians during which the Ethiopians secured victory. The building was described in 1938 in an Italian tourist publication as a fine example of the European interpretation of Ethiopian church design. The Italian Fascist authorities set the building on fire during the war in 1937. The cathedral was later restored by the Emperor following the liberation in 1941. Empress Zewditu of Ethiopia was crowned at this Cathedral in 1917, and Emperor Haile Selassie was crowned there in 1930, and it became a pilgrimage site for Rastafarians. The Cathedral has a museum, and an Imperial throne is on display as is the stained glass works of artist Afewerk Tekle. Given the reason why the cathedral was named, it displays weaponry used in the wars against the Italians including curved swords and tridents and giant helmets made from the manes of lions.
Day trips from Addis Ababa
Gefersa Reservoir & MenageshaSuba Forest Reserve
It only takes around 1 hour to drive out to Gefersa Reservoir, leaving Addis Ababa on the Nekempte road. You can walk around the northern edge of the reservoir, and expect to find Blue-winged Goose, Wattled Ibis & White-collared Pigeon. The waterfowl is predominantly composed of Egyptian Geese with some Yellow-billed Duck. Continue along the road to the west for a further 5 or so km, and turn left at the signpost to the Forestry College. This road is a bit potholed but quite easy to drive, and will take you south to a turning to the left just after the college this will take about an hour. The road to the park HQ is OK, as is the road up to the mountain although it is quite steep. If you were stay till dusk (or camp here), you should find Yellow-fronted Parrots coming in to roost.
