WOODSTOCK
RECREATION & LEISURE GUIDE SUMMER 2016
The Woodstock Recreation & Leisure Guide is the City of Woodstock’s official listing for recreation, leisure, cultural programs and events.
A
h, ‘tis spring – which leads to summer and plans of family outings, vacations, work in the yard, team sports and basically relaxing. On the pages that follow you will find hundreds of ideas to keep yourself and the kids entertained. If you ever hear ‘there is nothing to do’, this guide contains the response that are are many, many things to to in our great city! Once the yard cleanup is done, think about digging out a one square metre patch of soil and plant a garden. Start small, maybe a couple of different vegetables surrounded by a row of flowers. If you have children, make it a challenge. Each of them gets part of the patch and see who can grow the best vegetables. And the best part is once the veggies have grown they can come out of the garden and onto your table. You never know this might be the start of a new lifelong passion for your children. If you are a little more adventurous, plant a larger garden and be part of the City Beautiful campaign. More information is available on the city’s website: www.cityofwoodstock.ca. There is a bevy of activities for every one of all ages. You can walk the trails, relax in a park, play organized sports, play pickup games using our neighbourhood facilities. You can swim, you can picnic, you can cycle, and you can explore discovering all of the hidden gems that dot our city. Learn your city so you can be a tour guide in the know when visitors come to town. Hang on to this guide, it will come in handy throughout the months ahead. If exercise is not really your thing, a little bit can’t hurt. I suggest bending and walking. If you see a piece of litter on the sidewalk, bend over, pick it up and walk it to a trash container. It helps keep the City Beautiful! Trevor Birtch, Mayor

getting involved in this way, you’ll assist us in designing a playground that not only meets safety standards but reflects your community’s special needs. If you would like to discuss fundraising for your neighbourhood or would like to sponsor a playspace please call the Parks and Recreation office. If you notice damage to city parks please contact the Park office at 519‑539‑2382 ext. 4101.
Woodstock offers over 350 hectares of parkland and open spaces to the 38,000 people that live in the City.
COMMUNITY GARDEN PLOTS
PLAYGROUND SAFETY TIPS
Do you have a shady back yard and would like to have a vegetable garden? The city of Woodstock has a community garden at Cottle Park on Salter Avenue (off Parkinson). There are 32 plots that are 16' × 16' in size. The garden is fenced and irrigated to help ensure a healthy crop. For more information on renting contact the Parks and Recreation Department at 519‑539‑2382 ext. 4101.
To ensure that playgrounds are safe for our children we need to work together! Here are some safety tips which parents and caregivers should be familiar with and teach your children. • Playgrounds are not to be used during freezing or wet conditions, • Remove cords and drawstrings on children’s hoods, hats and jackets, • Tuck in all clothing that can get caught on playground equipment, • Wear a neck warmer instead of a scarf, • Take off bicycle helmets before using playground equipment. Bicycle helmets can get trapped in equipment and strangle a child, • Make sure children do not tie ropes or skipping ropes to slides and other playground equipment, • Supervise children on the playground, • Teach children how to use playground equipment and play safely, • Pets are not allowed on playground surfaces.
PLAYGROUNDS The City of Woodstock has 34 playgrounds located in 51 parks. The replacement and upgrading of playground equipment with city funds remains a challenge that the community can help us with. Local community groups and School Parent Councils can help to expedite the replacement or enhancement of playgrounds in their area through local fundraising. City staff will meet with interested citizens or groups to help develop a fundraising plan for your playground. By

PLANNING A FESTIVAL OR EVENT?
TREE PLANTING CEREMONY Each year Woodstock celebrates Arbor Day by planting trees at a preselected school in our community. Students, teachers, parents, local community groups and City staff join together to help plant a variety of trees and shrubs.
The City of Woodstock recognizes the importance that festivals and events can play in our community. They contribute to our quality of life, local economic development and community identity. The city intends to be proactive in attracting new events, as well as working with existing event organizers to support the success of their activities. We can assist event organizers in identifying the permits and approvals required to provide a safe and successful event. Anyone planning an outdoor festival or event must first contact the Parks & Recreation Department to obtain event guidelines to ensure all requirements for hosting an event are in place. For more information contact the Parks and Recreation Department at 519‑539‑2382 ext. 4101.
Recreation & Leisure Guide
Arbor Day originated in Nebraska in 1872 where a day was set aside and over a million trees were planted. This idea quickly spread to neighbouring states and to Canada. Today we still celebrate by planting trees each spring in Woodstock. Do your part to green up Woodstock by participating in Arbor Day activities by planting a tree at your residence.
EMERALD ASH BORER The City of Woodstock Parks Department is faced with many challenges with the invasive Emerald Ash Borer. We are currently removing, stumping, and replanting white and green Ash trees on several city streets. Please do your part and water the trees when it is required. Also, if there is any trimming required on a city boulevard tree please call the Parks and Recreation office. The Park staff will evaluate the tree and do all necessary work.

Parks and pathways play a key role in enhancing Woodstock residents’ quality of life. They contribute to residents’ physical and psychological health, enhance civic pride and strengthen local identity. Parks and pathways also support the greenspace network, enhance the City’s natural beauty and promote active transportation. In order to achieve customer service excellence, the City of Woodstock strives to provide new and growing communities with excellent parks and pathways that meet the active and passive recreational needs of residents. The success of parks and pathways begins in the early stages of planning, during the pre-application consultation stage and again at the subdivision review stage, when park blocks and pathways are selected and acquired. The size and shape of a park block helps define which facilities can be accommodated while the location of pathway locks helps provide an interconnected greenspace network. The City’s annual park budgeting exercise, as well as park design and construction process, are key factors that influence the delivery of new parks.
