RECREATION & LEISURE GUIDE FALL/WINTER 2016–2017

The Woodstock Recreation & Leisure Guide is the City of Woodstock’s official listing for recreation, leisure, cultural programs and events.

I

realize that thinking about fall and winter sports may be a little difficult at this time considering the sweltering temperatures we experienced this summer, but we must look ahead and that includes planning individual and family activities for the winter months. You can join organized activities or do things on your own. If individual pursuits are available there is cross country skiing, hiking on our trails, tobogganing and sledding. Many organizations have events that you can participate in. The Woodstock Art Gallery, Museum and Library also have many great programs throughout the winter season for people of all ages. For the family, read through this guide, there is something, I guarantee, that will interest everyone. The programs offered by the city continue to grow and change with our community. If you dream of warm climes and cannot head south to enjoy the water, check out the winter schedule at the Aquatic Centre. For those of you who are still fans of the blue and white (I am talking about the team from Toronto) many of you took the opportunity to check out our own blue and white squad, the Navy Vets. I received feedback from a number of families who experienced the excitement of Junior C hockey for the first time, impressed and vowing to return. The Vets schedule starts soon, so check them out. When you go out and shovel your walk, think of your neighbours, especially if they are older. I realize many people may not view this as recreation, but it is winter exercise. Shovelling makes our sidewalks safer for all. Trevor Birtch, Mayor

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

Give your child a head start in learning to swim. The City of Woodstock Learn to Swim Program develops an appreciation and healthy respect for the water before kids get in too deep. In our basic aquatic progressions, we work to ensure 3 to 5 year olds become comfortable in the water and have fun acquiring and developing a foundation of water skills. We incorporate Lifesaving Society Water Smart ® education in all preschool levels.

Inclement Weather During inclement weather, please check the city’s website (www.cityofwoodstock.ca) and the city of Woodstock Facebook page for any cancellations.

Missed a Lesson? Unfortunately, due to the large volume of swimming participants, we are unable to make up or reschedule missed lessons. Lessons or program sessions missed by participants will not be rescheduled or refunded. If you miss the last lesson, you may pick up your progress report at Southside Aquatic Centre.

Instructor Requests We review all requests for specific instructors or specific gender of instructors; however we are unable to guarantee that any specific request will be granted.

HOW TO REGISTER You can either call or visit Southside Aquatic Centre to register your child or yourself for our lessons. Please always select a couple of times that work well with your schedule so we can place you into a class easily. If you are not sure where to register your child, ask their current instructor or come in during a public swim time so we can do an assessment. Payment must be made at the time of registration.

PRIVATES & SEMI PRIVATE A one-to-one or a two-to-one instructional setting to provide extra attention to a specific skill. Semi-private participants must be registered at the same time. The City of Woodstock does not provide matches. Private and semi-private lessons run for 30 mins. We take private lesson requests which will allow us to accommodate more privates. Call 519-421-7665 to submit your requests.

PLAYGROUND SAFETY TIPS To ensure that playgrounds are safe for our children we need to work together! Here are some safety tips which parents and caregivers should be familiar with and teach your children. • Playgrounds are not to be used during freezing or wet conditions. • Remove cords and drawstrings on children’s hoods, hats and jackets. • Tuck in all clothing that can get caught on playground equipment. • Wear a neck warmer instead of a scarf. • Take off bicycle helmets before using playground equipment. Bicycle helmets can get trapped in equipment and strangle a child. • Make sure children do not tie ropes or skipping ropes to slides and other playground equipment. • Caregivers are to inspect playground equipment before use. • Supervise children on the playground. • Teach children how to use playground equipment and play safely. • Use playground equipment that is age appropriate (as specified on the play structure). • Pets are not allowed on playground surfaces.

Do you have a shady back yard and would like to have a vegetable garden? The city of Woodstock has a community garden at Cottle Park on Salter Avenue (off Parkinson). There are 32 plots that are 16’ x 16’ in size. The garden is fenced and irrigated to help ensure a healthy crop. For more information on renting contact the Parks and Recreation Department at 519‑539‑2382 Ext. 4101.

PLAYGROUNDS The City of Woodstock has 36 playgrounds located in 51 parks. The replacement and upgrading of playground equipment with city funds remains a challenge that the community can help us with. Local community groups and School Parent Councils can help to expedite the replacement or enhancement of playgrounds in their area through local fundraising. City staff will meet with interested citizens or groups to help develop a fundraising plan for your playground. By

PLANNING PROCESS FOR NEW PARKS

After a long winter Woodstock residents come together to clean up areas in the city that have litter. Students earning hours for school, parents, local community groups and City staff join together to rid the city of several tons of waste and recycling. Help put litter in its place.

ARBOR DAY

Parks and pathways play a key role in enhancing Woodstock residents’ quality of life. They contribute to residents’ physical and psychological health, enhance civic pride and strengthen local identity. Parks and pathways also support the greenspace network, enhance the City’s natural beauty and promote active transportation. In order to achieve customer service excellence, the City of Woodstock strives to provide new and growing communities with excellent parks and pathways that meet the active and passive recreational needs of residents.

PARKS & OPEN SPACES

SPRING CLEAN-UP DAY

The success of parks and pathways begins in the early stages of planning, during the pre-application consultation stage and again at the subdivision review stage, when park blocks and pathways are selected and acquired. The size and shape of a park block helps define which facilities can be accommodated while the location of pathway locks helps provide an interconnected greenspace network. The City’s annual park budgeting exercise, as well as park design and construction process, are key factors that influence the delivery of new parks.

TREE PLANTING CEREMONY Each year Woodstock celebrates Arbor Day by planting trees at a preselected school in our community. Students, teachers, parents, local community groups and City staff join together to help plant a variety of trees and shrubs. Arbor Day originated in Nebraska in 1872 where a day was set aside and over a million trees were planted. This idea quickly spread to neighbouring states and to Canada. Today we still celebrate by planting trees each spring in Woodstock.
