2021 Federal Election

Achieving Uniquely Stony Plain With the federal election nearing, there is a shifting dynamic between all levels of government. During the upcoming election cycle, municipal councils such as the Town of Stony Plain are taking a unified approach to engaging with their federal counterparts to advocate for local priorities. After consultation between Town Council and Administration, a number of shared objectives have been identified leading up to the federal election. The election priorities work in tandem and support the pillars of focus outlined in the 2021-2024 Strategic Plan.

Our Vision: A connected community… embracing the future. Champion of progress and community values in a metropolitan region.

Grow the Canada Community-Building Fund Rail Safety Improvement Economic Recovery Make Housing Affordable for All

To meet the needs of our community, strong partnerships and collaboration with other levels of government are vital. We have prepared this summary of key priorities to provide transparency of our goals and to generate open dialogue during and after the election campaign.

We Commit to: Pursue partnerships and advocate with regional entities, municipalities and other levels of government to provide infrastructure, programs and services for a growing urban municipality. - Strategic Plan 2021-2024

Supportive Infrastructure Grow the Canada Community-Building Fund CHALLENGE This Fund (formerly known as the Gas Tax Fund) is the only tool that transfers funds directly to municipalities from the federal government, empowering them to meet local needs. The Fund is direct, effective and predictable. In the 2021 federal budget, the government doubled the gas tax transfer to municipalities for one year. This fund has been utilized for a number of important projects in Stony Plain, including to help build Heritage Park and complete Downtown Redevelopment.

REQUEST The next federal government provides the current level of Canada CommunityBuilding Funds, with a predictable growth rate.

We Commit to:

Rail Safety Improvement CHALLENGE The Town has identified a need for additional pedestrian and vehicle rail crossings in Stony Plain. Ongoing work with CN Rail is taking place to develop the plan for the rail crossing improvements. Communities along rail lines need support and funding from the federal government to ensure citizens can have safe access around their community. As Stony Plain continues to grow and develop, railway infrastructure must be enhanced.

REQUEST The next federal government commits to funding and supporting rail line safety improvements.

Enhance the safety and protection of our community. - Strategic Plan 2021-2024

We Commit to: Increase awareness of our unique economic advantages and aligning our business attraction efforts with regional economic initiatives. - Strategic Plan 2021-2024

Economic Opportunity Economic Recovery CHALLENGE As communities across Canada recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, the need for direct resources to leverage investment, innovation, and job creation could not be greater. From snow-clearing to supportive housing to road construction, municipalities are Canada’s builders. As the order of government closest to daily life, we understand people’s real needs and will spur Canada’s post-COVID economic recovery. The Town welcomes the opportunity to work with the federal and provincial governments to address key issues related to economic development, including the delivery of improved digital infrastructure to accelerate business transactions.

REQUEST The next federal government commits to support businesses, workers, and communities in generating opportunities and prosperity in rebuilding from the pandemic and economic downturn.

Community Development Make Housing Affordable for All CHALLENGE Local governments are on the front lines of the affordability crisis and the growing disconnect between rents, home prices and incomes. Students, seniors, families, and workers are struggling to find an affordable place to live in this region. The Town is working with local partners to access the limited tools to build solutions, but lasting progress will require strong and continuing federal leadership. Implementing local solutions to support vulnerable citizens who need supportive housing requires partnership and funding to municipalities and housing organizations.

REQUEST The next federal government commits to addressing the gaps in funding to support the need for affordable housing.
