B o r n i n B e i j i n g, C h e n M a n gra d u a te d f ro m t h e p h o to gra p hy d e p a r t m e n t o f t h e d e s i gn s c h o o l under the Central Academy of Fine Ar ts in 2 0 0 5 . Pr i o r to h e r gra d u at i o n , i n 2 0 0 3 s h e h a d already begun to lay the foundations of her career with the launch of a series of covers she produced for the Shanghai-based fashion m a g a z i n e V i s i o n — C h i n a ’s f i r s t a t t e m p t a t a progressive style magazine, inspired naturally at t h at m o m e nt by Wa l l p a p e r m a g a z i n e. B e t we e n 2003 and 2007, she created a sequence of cover i m a g e s t h a t we re u n i q u e w i t h i n t h e h i s to r y o f C h i n e s e m a g a z i n e c o v e r s . A r t y, m a n i p u l a t e d , fantastical, almost over the top, the images c a p t u re d t h e s o c i o - c u l t u ra l f a s c i n at i o n s o f t h e moment: a visual confluence of ever y nuance of glamour, sur face, vir tual energy and freedom of the imagination that was seeping into the bedrock of the emergent youth culture of the period. With hindsight, Chen Man’s photographs d e f i n e t h at m o m e nt , s i m u l t a n e o u s l y h e ra l d i n g the present, and paving the way for a future in which, courtesy of her success, this type of visual language is cer tain to become ubiquitous. I t is amazing to reflect that half a decade ago, Chen Man was forging a brave new path through the prevailing mediocrity: that she was almost singlehandedly precipitating a visual revolution. C h e n M a n ’s c h o i c e o f f i e l d w i t h i n t h e a r e n a of photography—st yle, beaut y, fashion— dovetails with her innate fondness for glamour, a n d h e r i n s i s te n ce u p o n p e r fe c te d b e a u t y. As a photographer she is licensed to present fantastical illusions. She takes the illusions far beyond the mere moment captured in conventionally shot photographs. Her approach is first and foremost about taking total control of the image she creates: the motivation behind that control being to achieve the ultimate in b e a u t y. C h e n M a n d o e s t h i s b y a c c e n t u a t i n g ever y feature of her already beautiful models to a perfection that is almost unbearable, even as it defies the gaze to look away.
