DRAGON BOAT FESTIVAL IS BACK FOR 2022 We can now officially announce that the 22nd Peterborough Dragon Boat Festival will be held on Saturday 11th June 2022 at the Peterborough Rowing Lake with up to 48 teams battling it out over the 200m racecourse! Gable Events, the festival’s previous organisers, have now closed but two of their senior event managers are carrying on their legacy with the brand new company, NewWave Events. This year the city centre is not only going to be lit up with festive lights but Peterborough Cathedral is bringing us a spectacular display which will see the city landmark illuminated both inside and out.

his amazing light and sound show called The Angels are Coming will project incredible images onto the magnificent west front of Peterborough Cathedral and also inside the building. From Wednesday November 24 to Saturday November 27 the stunning light display will be a big attraction for families during the dark nights and is a great addition to the festivities. It begins outside with a light art projection onto the three great porticos of the Cathedral, set to music composed by David Harper. You’ll then enter the Cathedral to see the interior of the nave full of beautiful light projections with accompanying sound. The immersive piece has been created by the Artistic Collaboration known as Luxmuralis, which means ‘light murals’. Peter Walker, the artist whose creation One Small Step, illustrating the lunar surface, has been on display at Peterborough Cathedral, is Artistic Director of Luxmuralis, working alongside audio visual technicians and other artists. Peter Walker says he’s pleased to work on another project with the Cathedral – “Luxmuralis are delighted to be bringing our work to Peterborough Cathedral. The Angels are
Coming will bathe the iconic west front in light, telling the nativity story and bringing the traditions of Christmas to life in a way the Cathedral has never seen before. “It will be a perfect way to start Advent, and for families and friends to come together and experience something new in this majestic place. This will be a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the joy of the season, and to be immersed in sound and light as visitors witness the outdoor show and then walk amongst the stars within the Cathedral itself.” Canon Tim Alban Jones, Vice Dean of Peterborough says it will be another major draw – “Advent and Christmas are always very special times at Peterborough Cathedral and this year is no exception. This splendid re-interpretation of the Christmas story in light and sound is a way of helping us to see these familiar things in an entirely different way. Whether you are aged 3 or 93, this promises to be a truly memorable experience.” Entry to the show is by timed ticket. City Centre Lights Switch On This year sees the return of Peterborough’s big live light switch on event in Cathedral Square. On Friday November 19 from 5pm the city’s giant real Christmas tree and a brand new set of illuminations will light up at a special stage show hosted by Kev Lawrence from PCRfm. He’ll be joined by stars from all the city’s pantomimes and Father Christmas. It’s great to see the live event return and promises a great night of festive fun culminating in the big countdown at 7pm. Take a look at our website www.espmag.co.uk for coverage of the night.

FREE FESTIVAL OF ART AND LIGHTS IN THE CITY An amazing new festival of events is underway brightening up Peterborough city centre this winter. Revitalising the arts and renewing our connection with the city, Unlocking Peterborough is an exciting and unique programme of events which runs through to December, featuring circus performances, strolling musicals, street theatre, work by local artists and a Christmas winter wonderland.

his unique festival of circus, music and art has already wowed visitors with illuminated stilt walkers and artists entertaining the crowds and there are plenty more great free performances still to come.
Unlocking Peterborough is presented by Peterborough Positive, and funded by the Welcome Back fund, supporting a safe and successful reopening of the local economy. The end of November will ramp up the celebrations in the city with a
In amongst these the amazing Winter Wonderland Birds fly into the city centre from 3pm. These feathered beauties will bring the sounds of peacocks to Peterborough, while more sound is brought to the city streets that weekend by the Dickensian Christmas Ding Dong, a strolling musical performance decked in holly and ivy while Christmas stilt walkers Tinsel and Cracker will spread some festive fun. The sparkle of Christmas is brought to Peterborough by the beautiful, mesmerising Winter Fairy. On December 11 and 12, this snowkissed figure will leave us in awe as she conjures crystal balls and skilfully moves them like ice bubbles. Zooming around will be the Roller Skating Illuminated Presents, fitted in giant present costumes with twinkling illuminations. Look out for The Christmas Belles as well – a ribbonwaving, stilt-walking duo ringing out yuletide chimes with syncopated hand chimes. Then it’s time for the grand finale on December 18 and 19 with a variety of performers taking to the city’s streets. The highlight on Sunday will be a special appearance by Spark! This
street theatre show combines highimpact drumming with kaleidoscopic lighting design and incredible costumes – these performers are amazing, it’s a show you’ll never forget.
Entertainment ELF The Musical Discover your inner elf! Peterborough’s multi-award-winning Peterborough Operatic & Dramatic Society (PODS) are back with the smash-hit ELF The Musical, based on the beloved holiday film starring Will Ferrell. Following the sell-out success of Hairspray and their acclaimed production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, PODS can’t wait to present the regional premiere of this side-splitting family favourite running from November 23 – 27 at The Cresset. Robin Hood This Christmas, join Robin Hood and his merry men (and women) in Peterborough as Lamphouse Theatre brings Sherwood Forest to the city! Lamphouse’s Christmas show, Robin Hood, is a fun filled, musical alternative to traditional pantomime. In this brand new version Marion takes the lead, escaping the castle and joining the gang of outlaws in the forest… but everything isn’t quite as it seems. A Christmas Carol Does it get more festive than a performance of A Christmas Carol inside Peterborough Cathedral? This winter, Chapterhouse Theatre Company continues its festive tradition of touring Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol to theatres, castles and cathedrals across the UK. The Snow Queen A magical performance to look forward to in January (tickets would make a great Christmas present idea …just saying!) is the critically acclaimed re-telling of Hans Christian Andersen’s classic fairy tale ballet, The Snow Queen. Events Burghley Christmas Fair
If you’d like to start some Christmas shopping in a beautiful setting away from the hustle and bustle of the mainstream shops the Burghley Christmas Fair is the place to head. The fair at Burghley House in Stamford runs from Thursday November 25 – 28 with decorative chalets, marquees and pagodas featuring a range of exhibitors. There’ll be everything from luxury gifts, artisan foods, festive treats, winter clothing and much more on sale between 9.30am and 4pm each day. Half an hour time slot sessions will be in operation between 9.30am and 3pm to space out admissions. Tickets are £5 and under 18's enter free of charge and don’t need to book a time slot ticket.
Charity ice hockey match Christmas Silent Disco On Friday December 3 Peterborough Cathedral is offering the chance to silently dance the night away under the central tower, at the Christmas Silent Disco. A silent disco is great fun for all ages – you get your own set of headphones and a choice of channels. With DJ Steve Walsh on the decks, there’ll be Christmas pop classics on one channel and favourite dance hits on another. There’s plenty of space in the Cathedral to spread out and show off your best dance moves, and Christmas attire is positively encouraged. Peterborough’s known for its ice hockey, it’s all action and great fun to watch and now two of our recreational teams are going head to head all in aid of a good cause. Peterborough Phoenix, a local recreational ice hockey team is raising money to purchase a defibrillator to go outside the ice rink in Bretton. They’ll take on local rivals Peterborough Predators in a charity match on Saturday December 11 with faceoff at 8pm. Visitors can expect to see a range of players taking part at the charity match including ex-professionals and long-standing members of the team, with player ages ranging from 18-year olds to those that are young at heart. It’s free entry but they’re hoping to raise £1,000 for the defibrillator so hope you’ll be generous with donations. Fans will also get the chance to take photos with the players as well as take part in many other engaging activities planned throughout the evening.
Join the December Daily Dash for Sue Ryder It’s the time of the year when we can easily become part of the sofa with a tin of Quality Street on our laps but here’s a little motivation to keep you active and help a local charity. The December Daily Dash challenge is encouraging us all to get outdoors and run, jog or walk 5k every day in December, whatever the weather, to raise vital funds for Sue Ryder, the national healthcare charity. Since its inception, the festive fundraiser has continued to grow in popularity, with thousands of people in the UK and across the world lacing up their trainers or walking shoes in a bid to boost their physical and mental health during the festive period. It’s free to sign up, but any money raised through fundraising goes directly towards Sue Ryder’s vital end of life, bereavement and neurological support. Katharine of Aragon Festival returns in January There’s a great event coming up for those with a fascination for history as the Katharine of Aragon Festival returns next year running from Friday January 28 to Sunday January 30. The popular festival commemorates the date in 1536 when Henry VIII’s first wife was buried at Peterborough Abbey (now the Cathedral). A highlight of the weekend, which includes family Tudor days at the Museum, as well as talks and tours, is a visit from His Majesty King Henry VIII himself. Performance historian, John S. White, will perform his show, Conflict of Church and State: An Audience with King Henry VIII, at 7.30pm on Saturday January 29 in the Cathedral. Aladdin Brings Panto Magic To Peterborough! This year our wish to see panto return has been granted and we’re off on a magic carpet ride for adventures with Aladdin at the New Theatre... The genie is definitely out of the bottle with the star cast revealed and it’s time to head off on a much needed adventure this Christmas. When we chatted to director Matt Brinkler back in the summer he told ESP they’d be going large this year and they’ve certainly lined up some well known names for this lavish production of Aladdin on Peterborough’s biggest stage. Get ready to boo and hiss your heart out as actor and comedian Rufus Hound makes his pantomime debut as the evil Abanazar. Mis-Teeq pop princess and star of I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here, Sabrina Washington stars as the beautiful Princess Jasmine and pantomime royalty, Bobby Crush, will bring us the laughs as Widow Twankey. Ricky K from Britain’s Got Talent stars as Wishee Washee and Julie Coombe from Hormonal Housewives plays the genie. Newcomer Joshian Omana gets his chance to shine as our hero Aladdin. ESP grabbed a word with Rufus and asked if starring as the villain played a part in him taking the role.

Ricky K’s exuberant performances on Britain’s Got Talent in 2014 proved what a great all round performer he is. Ricky says he’d like to play the dame in future but Bobby Crush has that one sewn up this year and between the two of them we’re in for a real giggle. Like most of us Ricky feels Christmas is all about family and can’t wait to see all gnenerations sharing the experience once again – “I think this year everyone is going to be so up for the panto. I just think everyone’s thinking, ‘I am ready’! And there’s no better feeling than seeing everyone laughing and enjoying themselves and going away happy. It’s going to be great and in a beautiful theatre.” The New Theatre is ideal for a big production and we’re promised a real spectacle with amazing scenery, lots of stunning special effects, dazzling dance routines and songs, plus some beautiful costumes. Theatre Director Richie Ross told ESP the excitement is building – “We cannot wait to deliver the locally focused and fun panto that we all missed and longed for last year, and this year's Aladdin promises to be a blockbusting spectacle.” ESP asked Rufus if he had any final words before we parted ways. He enthusiastically told us – “I still have vivid memories of being at panto as a child, shouting out to Des O'Connor and just having a great time. It means a lot to me that I’ll be a part of something that the audiences will remember for the longest time too. “It played a big part,” he said. “In previous jobs I’ve always been given the Buttons-esque type roles – so when they asked if I’d like to play the bad guy, I jumped at the chance. Plus, after the last year and a half we’ve all had, I welcome the opportunity of being part of something that will make people laugh. Laughter is something we all need right now.
Rufus continued, “So many people say – ‘Oh, it’s just panto, it doesn’t need to make sense or have a high standard of professionalism or quality to it’ – but I disagree. Why shouldn’t you set out to make everything you do the best level of quality it can possibly be? Thankfully everyone involved in this show shares that outlook and I think the audience will genuinely be in for a real treat.”

MY WINTER SURVIVAL GUIDE
And that’s what I love about winter, knowing spring isn’t all that far away and this is a time for planning all the exciting things I want to do as the New Year unfolds.
But as we get ready for 2022 I thought I’d pick out a few people that deserve a ‘Pep Award’ for all different kinds of reasons but mainly for having an impact on my year.
But we need to jump into January in high spirits and that means surviving winter until at least the end of February.

Yes, it’s started. The days are mostly dark, wet, windy and miserable and I’m whiter than Casper but guess what? Spring’s on its way!
First of all, I think I have to thank the lockdown imposed on us this time last year because for me it was a case of sink or swim. I could have easily stayed in, cut the world off and thrown myself into boxsets and Haagen-Dazs. Instead, I exercised more and got out of my house more, because stepping outside was practically the only thing we were allowed to do and I’ve never taken the great outdoors for granted since. I spent more time walking, buying coffee and meeting friends than I did in any winter previous and that’s why I’m grateful for the lockdown we were in. I also made relationships with new people and they all but one continue today. But what I took from the experience of the one that got away is how important it is not to fall out with people in these fragile times. My actions always speak louder than good or bad words and I’m hopeful to break bread in 2022. So, this time around winter will be a little easier to navigate despite having to keep on our guard because let’s face it, Covid is here to stay. What we all need is a winter survival guide! Follow my top ten tips and you’ll be beaming and ready to roll come springtime. 1. Ditch the beer. Yes, for real. Switch to red wine. It’ll keep you warm and Jesus drank it, so it’s not a sin 2. Reach out to someone who’s gone quiet on you. Never underestimate the power of contact and conversation for that person and yourself even if you think you don’t need it 3. Back off your daily social media consumption. Your friends aren’t that happy in their photos all the time. Happiness is temporary and can be deceiving. Be consistently content instead 4. Get up early at the weekend. The days are shorter and we need to make the most of them by wrapping up warm, driving to the coast and scoffing a bag of vinegar-soaked chips 5. Stay industrious. Don’t put tasks, projects and chores off just because it’s winter. The satisfaction of accomplishment far outweighs

the satisfaction of eating a whole tub of leftover Pringles from Christmas in one sitting 6. Cuddle. Throw her hot water bottle away. This means she’ll have to cuddle you for some warmth. For those of you who’ve been together for ages, what’s the worst that can happen? 7.
Book a holiday to somewhere you’ve never been to before. I’m currently looking for New Year deals to Margate
8. Don’t make New Year resolutions – they just depress you when by the end of January it’s game over. List six small achievements you’d like to tick off in 2022 instead. Mine are: paddle boarding, not throwing up on Marmite, ride my motorbike more, say ‘no’ more, eat less sugar and re-apply for Mastermind 9. If it feels good, do it. Sod emotional intelligence and listen to your heart instead of your head 10. Be honest with yourself. Live in the present moment. Count your blessings

Those of you who’ve been reading ESP from when it started in 1998 will remember me out and about every weekend armed with a camera and capturing the city’s night scene. It was a time before camera phones and social media and although some revellers would take cameras out with them, there was nowhere to publish their handy photo-work.
CAUGHT IN THE ACT! Guess which one of us had too many Babychams?
Enter yours truly with the latest state of the art camera and a couple of trusty sidekicks. We’d pop into bars, pubs, clubs and at events and snap away until the tiny camera memory card could take no more. Most of the photo content I took was unsuitable to print (alcohol made people do the strangest things in front of a lens) but for a good ten years I must have taken and published thousands of photos for the magazine’s dedicated Paparazzi pages. People still come up to me today and remember a photo I took of them even though I ‘retired’ from pap duty more than 10 years ago!
WHICH COFFEE TO GO
So, as a nod to the happiest of times, we’re turning back the clock with our regular Back In The Day paparazzi feature, which you’ll also be able to see on our social media platforms.
It’s Quality Street (the purple one) and god knows what other latte season but I don’t go for all that noise when I buy coffee.
Our first look back is from November 2008 when I hit the town with Jess Weaver (Miss Posh) and the original Face of ESP Becca Evans (pictured). We popped into Shooters, Latinis and The Solstice – all venues that have since bitten the dust.
According to the British Coffee Association, we now drink approximately 95 million cups of coffee per day in the UK. Edinburgh is the most searched city for coffee shops and cafes, followed by London and York.
IT’S IN OUR JEANS?
Have you noticed how fashionable us Peterborians are when it comes to jeans? No, me neither. But according to menswear retailer Charles Tyrwhitt, we Googled jeans more than 4,500 times in 2021 when searching for the most smart-casual fashion item. Does this mean we’re the most fashion-conscious city in the UK when it comes to choosing our denim? Not quite. But according to Google data we’re second behind Bolton. And Birmingham, Manchester and Glasgow round off the top five.
I’ve got my city favourites (in no particular order) down to The Coffee Hive, The Lightbox, Bean Around BE.AR and The Willow Café Bar. But I need new caffeine fix places to head to on my winter walks. Where are you all recommending? MY WORD OF THE MONTH:

While I’m at it, did you know Peterborough is ranked as the third most garden friendly city in the UK with 93% of addresses owning a garden? (I seem to have turned mine into a carpark though). ART ON PETERBOROUGH’S STREETS Peterborough has a fantastic collective of talented street artists we really should be shouting about so it’s hoped URBAN will also shine a light on the city’s own graffiti and street art culture. Look out for artists who’ll be involved in creating murals in the city centre on November 27 and 28 as part of the festive build up and Unlocking Peterborough Festival.

There are many to be proud of but Street Arts Hire are one group who’ve put Peterborough on the map with Nathan Murdoch achieving international recognition when his anti racism mural went viral. His incredible artwork adorns walls and underpasses across the city from Cuckoo’s Hollow in Werrington to schools and local businesses. Nathan told ESP – “Street art culture was created out of graffiti culture. Banksy’s success has made much of the culture that now exists possible.
Peterborough has bagged a Banksy as well as work by Damian Hirst and other leading contemporary artists for an amazing new art exhibition called URBAN which will shine a national spotlight on the city. generations, people are intrigued. Of course, media stories following Banksy's pieces at auction and the mystery of his identity plus his pieces just appearing during the night all add to the intrigue. Even if you’re not a fan I think people will want to see the piece up close.”
Never say nothing ever happens in Peterborough because this street art display includes big names and some works which have rarely been seen in the UK. URBAN will include original works by graffiti artists Banksy, My Dog Sighs, Blek le Rat, Pure Evil, Kaws, Damian Hirst and several other prominent artists. Opening at the Peterborough Museum and Art Gallery on Saturday December 11 and running until May 2022, it will include the unique Banksy cottage from Merrivale Model Village in Norfolk. Sheena Carmen the Gallery Curator told ESP they’re expecting it will draw visitors from across the country – “We are excited, I think it will bring a wider audience from Peterborough but also from out of the city much further afield. We are promoting this nationally as we want to use it as an opportunity to help the city's economic recovery by hopefully encouraging secondary spend. “Peterborough has been successful in getting funding for a Business Improvement District (BID) scheme, which is great news for the city. We are working with businesses on ideas to promote the city through URBAN.” It’s fantastic to have an exhibition of this standard on show here and Sheena hopes it will broaden people’s interest in the arts and open up the art gallery to a new audience in the city. “Street art predominantly thanks to Banksy's work interests all people across
The gallery, housed within Peterborough’s historic museum building on Priestgate has shown many well-known sculptors and contemporary artists in the past, including local street artist Stuart Payn, as well as popular family exhibitions such as Nick Sharritt. Peterborough has some incredibly talented artists here including the likes of Street Arts Hire and the artists who take part in the Battle Lines events around the city. Sheena says she’s keen to get them involved – “We are looking at lots of ways to involve local street artists, especially emerging artists, we are looking at their ideas to transform areas of the museum. “The exhibition features many of the best street/Graffitti artists both nationally and internationally alongside some contemporary artists. I am starting to lose count of the numbers of work but around about 130 will be on show. These include Banksy's Heart Boy, and the lovely little cottage done in Great Yarmouth at Merrivale Model Village. We have My Dog Sighs, Pure Evil, Blek Le Rat and Ben Eines and many others.”

A special preview will take place on Friday December 10 for ticket holders, who can get a first look at the exhibition before it officially opens to the public the following day, including drinks and food. URBAN is the largest exhibition of art work the gallery has had of work that is all owned by one person - John Brandler of Essex-based Brandler Galleries. It’s a mixture of orignals and prints and all the work is for sale. The exhibition was made possible thanks to James O’Rawe, general manager at Peterborough Workspace Limited, who approached Brandler Galleries to bring the street art to Peterborough. “This is an incredibly exciting event for the city of Peterborough and one its residents can be proud of,” said James.
“I’m most proud of my anti racism hand pieces around Taverner’s Road. I’ve connected with people across the world of all cultures and skin colours through some paintings on the streets of this city. Even when I was painting them, what started off as a hostile environment at times – people who couldn’t speak a language I understand, communicated with universal hand symbols of respect. hen we dropped into The Cresset to meet the cast of Beauty and the Beast they were buzzing at the prospect of getting back on stage. Let’s be honest – aren’t we all desperate for a bit of escapism and custard pie-inthe- face fun? It’s always loud and laugh a minute at The Cresset with a lively show that doesn’t disappoint, so we can’t wait to see what this panto love story has in store. Beauty and the Beast might have a rocky start to their relationship but Grant Urquhart should be able to help. You’ll recognise Grant as one of the waiters helping couples find love in TV’s First Dates, but here he’s playing it for laughs as Silly Billy, a role he feels comes naturally to him! “I think I‘ve always been that type of character anyway, I’m always dropping stuff! If anything happens in the show like that it’s probably just an accident rather than direction.” Having seen so many couples trying to hit it off, what would Grant’s top tips be for a first date? “Be yourself. Don’t over talk. Keep eye contact and be open. I think being open is the main one because we see a lot of people on the show who’ve closed off instantly – that’s not going to go well.” This panto love story gets off to a bad start so what advice does he have for Beauty... “You never know until you’ve kissed the prince do you really. Try him on for size – see how it goes and if you’re not sure, I’m sure Silly Billy will be there to pick up the pieces.”

It’s also a change of roles for stage and screen performer Vanessa Boland who plays the panto baddie Carabosse. Vanessa is home grown Peterborough talent and actually appeared in panto here when she was 7 years-old. “I’m really most looking forward to having the kids’ chorus and getting kids back up on stage. I’m really looking forward to having audience participation again; it’s going to be so magical. And if something goes wrong the audience just loves it even more.” Mutli talented Victoria Jane, known for her role as Noo Noo the hoover in the Teletubbies, plays Beauty. “I think she’s one of my favourite princesses, I think she’s a lot of people’s favourite. She’s just got a bit more to her than other princesses, she’s independent, spirited, there are a lot of morals to this panto. “It’s about not judging a book by its cover, having your own purpose in life – not just a drippy princess waiting for a savior – she saves the Beast!” Kim Taylforth who you’ll recognise from TV shows like London’s Burning, Bad Girls and Brookside is a seasoned panto pro and will cast some magic as the Good Fairy. It’s a big thing for all

Tony’s been in countless TV shows including Emmerdale, Doctors, Midsummer Murders and Casualty but he’s played the Dame many times. “I’m really excited because it’s Peterborough and I live in Northampton so I support the Cobblers who play Posh so I’ll get a few jokes in… ‘I have a bra like Manchester United, all support and no cups…’ I keep it fun. I absolutely love panto and I love ad-libbing – ‘Velcro, what a rip-off’. I love a giggle and a sing along. hen spending a prolonged amount of time with family, conversation can sometimes start to dry up. My mother will usually take this opportunity to question me on why I choose to be single whilst casually explaining that there's a lovely single lady at her workplace. Buying Christmas gifts on a budget! So many of us were told that we couldn't see friends and family during Christmas 2020. Chances are this really put things into perspective and helped many realise there were some things more important than gifts - like being in the company of loved ones. That being said, you're still likely to want to buy presents for others nonetheless. We've all seen the adverts showing you the latest must have gifts, so I won't talk about those... this section instead is for anyone on a budget. I took to my online socials with the question, "What gifts would you give to others at Christmas if you were on a tight budget?" I received some great responses... "I volunteer at a charity shop and you would be surprised how many people donate brand-new, unopened items. As well as much of what we sell being brand new, we test out all electrical items, count the pieces in jigsaw puzzles, etc. We only display things of good quality so I highly recommend visiting some charity shops." Stuart from Whittlesey "I love to bake. I've perfected my brownie recipe and always spend a lot of December 23rd baking. I do the rounds on Christmas Eve – where all my close friends and family get a few slices each and many say it wouldn't feel like Christmas without it." Jeanie from Eye "I couldn’t believe just how cheap children's toys are on Facebook pages such as Facebay Peterborough. I've even seen a lot of items go up for free. Based on conversations I’ve had with the sellers; it would seem that parents simply want to help out other parents and so offer amazing discounts. Trust me when I say that just because something is incredibly cheap (or even free) it doesn't mean they're of bad quality. Many things I’ve collected have looked brand new." Louise from Dogsthorpe "A mate of mine loved the framed poster of his favourite movie that I once gifted him. These things can be expensive when ordered online. Instead, I found a decent frame with no marks (it looked brand new) at a car boot sale and got a printing shop in town to print me off a high resolution version of the poster. It looked great. It turns out they were actually very well received. My friend used her first coupon just a few days later, having a very much needed night out with her partner. I can remember seeing panto at the Key Theatre as a child and how excited I was when performers raced up the staircase next to me. That sense of being part of the show, up close to all of the action in the intimate auditorium, is one of the special qualities of this Peterborough landmark. And when you’re small being able to see the stage from any seat and not miss a thing makes any show more engaging.

New Theatre brings the West End to Peterborough With a New Year approaching it’s time to look ahead at some of the things we can get excited about. If you enjoy a live show there’s plenty to look forward to as the New Theatre is bringing the West End to Peterborough. First of all get your fishnets and high heels on and let’s do the Time Warp again as the Rocky Horror Show heads into town from February 14 – 19. The stage version of the cult classic, described as ‘Still the sexiest and funniest show in town’ by the Evening Standard will rock the New Theatre as part of a sell-out worldwide tour. Richard O’Brien’s rock ‘n’ roll musical never disappoints and includes all the songs to sing along to including Sweet Transvestite and Damn it Janet. Then the acclaimed West End hit Footloose begins a week long residency in Peterborough from March 15 – 19 so get ready to cut loose this spring! Starring Jake Quickenden as Willard and Darren Day as Reverend Moore we can’t wait to see this one take Peterborough by storm. Following two critically acclaimed tours and a West End run we finally get to see the hit show without needing a train ticket to London! Based on the 80s film this show features some cutting edge choreography and classic hits like Holding Out for a Hero, Almost Paradise and Let’s Hear it for the Boy – but we bet you’ll be up out of your seats for the title tune! If you loved the film, don’t miss the stage party that is Rock of Ages! Starring X-Factor champion Matt Terry as the legendary Stacee Jaxx the Bourbon Room is going to rock on the New Theatre stage. Running from April 12 – April 16, this show has been a global smash hit and is packed with 80s rock anthems and a cast of West End performers. It’s a big show with big hair and tunes played loud by a live band. At the other end of the musical spectrum we have The Osmonds: A New Musical which will receive its world premiere in February 2022, as part of a UK & Ireland Tour, and runs at the New Theatre Peterborough from April 19 – April 23. This story by Jay Osmond tells the true story of the five brothers from Utah who were pushed into the spotlight as children and went on to create smash hits, decade after decade. The musical features a list of 1970s anthems, including One Bad Apple, Down by the Lazy River, Crazy Horses, Let Me In, Love Me for a Reason, (We’re) Having a Party, Puppy Love, Long Haired Lover From Liverpool, Paper Roses and many more. s the nights draw in, the mornings become damp and cold and you’re trying to resist the urge to crank the heating up a notch because of gas prices and, you know, global warming and all that, it’s easy to feel that things are all looking a little bleak. But just as you’re wishing you could channel your inner squirrel and hibernate until spring, you hear the opening bars of a familiar theme tune and suddenly, things don’t seem quite as grim. Sequins, fake tan, and serious newscasters dressed as lobsters on prime time BBC TV – it can only mean Strictly is back, and man do we need it more than ever! Strictly has held a place in the nation’s hearts since 2004 but last year, during the misery of Covid, as the optimism of restrictions easing made way for the gloom of another lockdown and Christmas without our extended families, it became more important than ever. Like an oasis of joy and sparkle coupled with the comfort of a familiar friend; free therapy and a couple of hours a week when it felt like all was (almost) well with the world. And now we’re loving it once more as it work its magic to lift our spirits all over again.
(especially that incredible Paso) performing so perfectly together, the wonder of watching Rose dance Giovanni’s choreography so effortlessly, then remembering that she can’t actually hear the music, the “are they aren’t they?” of AJ and Kai’s passionate performances, not to mention the excruciating ‘drunk dad at a wedding’ samba of Greg Wise – the perfect balance of all the elements needed to provide the perfect tonic. And to make it even more fun, there’s @The_JamesJordan to follow on Twitter for proper ‘say it like it is’ show commentary! Overmarked? Surely not!

This year, I’m predicting John, Rose and possibly Tom for the final (the latter based more on his fanbase than his twinkle toes) but so far it’s actually anyone’s Glitterball to win as the dance floor is wide open. And that’s just another part of Strictly’s joy. Whilst it’s fun to speculate on who will be voted off next and think about the eventual winners, it’s the week in week out uplifting dose of sparkle, music, nerves and joy that gives us that boost and gently guides us towards Christmas.

Peterborough’s past is set to become a leading attraction for the future... It might be winter but there are still plenty of things to do in Peterborough and even more so now as the city’s historic Flag Fen Archaeological Park is set to open throughout the winter for the first time in over 10 years.

s well as a special winter solstice celebration in December, there will be plenty more opportunities to make the most of this amazing piece of history right on our doorstep as we look forward to lots of exciting changes in 2022. Despite being a site of international importance, Flag Fen doesn’t always seem to get the recognition it deserves, even amongst people who live here. That’s all set to change as the new woman in charge has a vision to make this a thriving attraction for both locals and tourists. Former National Trust manager Jacqueline Mooney is really excited about her new role with City Culture as the general manager of Flag Fen and has ambitious plans we’re equally excited to hear about.

“I don’t think that I am alone in wanting to bring this awesome landscape back to life and reignite community support for this internationally important archaeological site,” Jacqui told ESP. ”There is so much right here at Flag Fen to be explored, some of it is sitting just beneath the turf for future archaeological discovery.” Flag Fen’s story was revealed in the 1970s when excavations ahead of the construction of Peterborough New Town revealed an almost intact Bronze Age landscape. In 1982 the discovery of an ancient timber platform
stretching almost 1km across the fens, elevated the importance of the Flag Fen basin from locally important to being probably the most internationally important Bronze Age site in Europe. Despite its significance, awareness of this great local attraction has waned a little and Jacqui is looking forward to seeing more Peterborough people visit and see what it has to offer. Her intention is to rejuvenate the 3,000year-old landscape and highlight the amazing discoveries that have been made to encourage people to discover its unique place in England’s history. “The once popular and well known Archaeology Park has been overlooked in recent years and as the residents of Peterborough travel further afield for their entertainment, Flag Fen has lost its former popularity and become less well known but I want to work with partners and residents to change that.” It looks like we’re in safe hands as Jacqui has a wealth of experience having worked for the National Trust for 10 years in various roles, including overseeing the operations of Dunstable Downs in the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Prior to that she was head of visitor operations at English Heritage, looking after a vast portfolio of
attractions in East Anglia, Kent and Dover Castle, Yorkshire, Cheshire, North Lincolnshire and Durham.
House. There had been an Iron Age Round House here previously that was sadly lost through a catastrophic fire.
Finding places to go in the colder months can be difficult but Flag Fen is a great place to walk and see wildlife, has plenty to look at and learn about, and has a spacious café and gift shop where you can get cosy with a hot chocolate after a tour of the site.
“In the medium term we hope to invest in a new museum collection management system so that we can make our fascinating finds available to a wider audience both physically and electronically. In partnership with Peterborough City Council, we also hope to improve some of our visitor and museum facilities.
Jacqui couldn’t agree more – “Flag Fen is a fabulous mix of serene fenland including a beautiful Mere walk, you will see lots of water birds and native mammals as you walk around at this time of year. Half the fun of a winter walk is getting wrapped up and feeling the wind on your face! However, there is also plenty to do that is undercover to keep you warm starting and finishing in our visitor centre with café and shop, the Preservation Hall, Museum, Dig Tent and Hudson Barn all provide shelter from the weather if it turns a bit cold or wet.” So, an exciting new era begins and we should see some early improvements in the near future. “We are already working on plans to improve the offer in the short term,” explains Jacqui. “This includes the rejuvenation of the visitor centre, shop, café and play area. We have just introduced a new annual pass to make it easier for people to just drop in whenever they want for a short walk or a quick lunch in the café. “One of the first projects that I am really excited about is the reconstruction of a new Iron Age Round
“Longer term plans will include a spectacular reimagining of the timber causeway experience that we have in the preservation hall, a completely new and modern museum that really makes the most of the incredible Bronze Age finds that were discovered when the causeway was uncovered, one of the earliest wheels ever discovered in England and our Jurassic and Ice Age past.” Jacqui also has plans to make the site more accessible and link it back to the city with a new meadow walk from Fengate as well as setting up a mini farm as part of a project to develop a new adult learning offer at Flag Fen. So there’s plenty to get excited about but for now, why not make this the time you turn off the tele, get some fresh air and remind yourself what an amazing piece of history we have here to enjoy. Celebrate The Winter Solstice At Flag Fen One event to make sure you book the family in for will be the Winter Solstice celebrations at Flag Fen. With the centre opening during the winter for the first time for over ten years this promises to be a unique experience at the centre with plenty planned during the week for the whole family. Jacquie explains – “We have taken some elements of a traditional winter solstice celebration such as bonfires at dusk, stories around the fire in the Round House, Old Man Winter giving children’s gifts, seasonal eating and festive fun such as crafting, children’s trails and a children’s big Christmas dig in our all-weather simulated archaeological dig tent.” The pre-Christmas programme will run from December 18-23 and when Flag Fen reopens on December 27 their event focus will be on the New Year with a nature detectives trail for children and crafts focused on looking after the nature in our own gardens.

Back in the Day
When ESP hit the streets way back in December 1998 we were the first to start taking our camera to venues to snap revellers. Photos on mobiles just weren’t a thing and we used to cause quite a stir with local people eager to feature in that month’s centre spread. Our Man About Town Pep Cipriano would head out with his camera and capture the action in Peterborough’s pubs and clubs and at local events photgraphing you all out an about having a good time. We thought we would look back in the archives and head back to November 2008 when Pep popped into town with his trusty Paparazzi sidekicks Becca and Jess. On this particular outing they visited three Peterborough venues in the Northminster area you may remember – Latini’s cocktail bar, Shooters on New Road and The Solstice. O
ver the past few years, studies show that lowering our meat intake and increasing foods from the plant kingdom can help to lower the risk of many modern health issues and diseases such as heart disease, strokes, Type 2 Diabetes, lowering cholesterol, triglycerides and blood pressure as well as the risk of cancer and more. More recently, research has found that eating more plant foods can help to support our immune system which is particularly important this winter with the ongoing challenges we’re facing. The Zoe Covid Study found that those eating a high quality, plant rich diet were less likely to catch COVID-19 and end up in hospital with it. This is the first time that diet has been shown to reduce the risk of developing the disease. Professor Tim Spector, lead scientist on the Zoe Covid Study and professor of genetic epidemiology at King’s College London, says “You don’t have to go vegan, but getting more diverse plants on your plate is a great way to boost the health of your gut microbiome, improve your immunity and overall health, and potentially reduce your risk from COVID-19.” Much of our immune activity is located in our gut (gastrointestinal tract) we are literally more microbes than cells, which flourish on our plant foods, but we have to eat a wide variety of them. The winter months give us the opportunity to add more plants by way of vegetable soups/stews, hearty bean dishes with lots of greens. Not only do they support our immune system they also bring nutrients that support our skin and mental wellbeing, which we really need at this time of year.
Get a winter glow…
Boost your mood…
Our skin can get very depleted in the winter resulting in dry skin, lips, and hands as we get tucked up with central heating or a cosy log burner. We also tend to drink less fresh water, eat less fruits and leafy greens which have good water content.
Lifting our mood in the winter can be more difficult, we are not getting out in the sunshine as we do in the late spring /summer months. It’s a time you may want to supplement with Vitamin D!
There are ways we can give our skin a boost –
We can also help our mental wellbeing in the following ways –

Drink more water – keep that bottle nearby to remind you to have some sips during the day. You can also have some warm water with lemon/orange etc.

Getting together with friends/family and having a games night, wholesome conversations and laughter to help you feel more connected.
•
Increase healthy fats in your diet such as flax/chia seeds, oily fish, nuts/seeds, good quality olive oil, avocado etc. Fats offer protection to your skin whilst helping to hold water in the cells.
•
Avoid too much TV, especially the news, keeping an eye/ear out on world/local news is one thing but living with the TV on in the house 24//7 can make you depressed, anxious and fearful.
•
Treat yourself to a facial or look for home facials that help nourish and moisturise the skin. You may need to add a richer moisturiser or add a serum to your skin care not only to hydrate the skin but to give a little more barrier protection.
•
Getting out in mother nature can bring her calming energy to us. Wrap up and enjoy the fresh air and the winter sun when you can get it.
•
Sleep deprivation affects our mental, physical and emotional wellbeing. Get some early nights.
•
Lessen the amount of caffeine and stimulants such as sugar you take in, not only can this affect immunity but also your mood as our blood sugar can be affected.
•
Eating plant foods with orange/yellow/green colours will deliver lots of skin loving beta carotene.
•
You can still enjoy smoothies with fruits/leafy greens in the winter, but you may need to add in warming spices such as cinnamon/ginger to give the body the warmth it needs.
•
Adding in a winter super-green nutrient dense powder that will also help bring lots of chlorophyll (and other plant nutrients) that can support skin, nails, hair as well as immunity.
•
Getting lots of sleep will help keep eye bags and dark circles away.

Invest in yourself in
2022 Mental wellbeing has been a big concern during restrictions and uncertainties, which is why it’s such a huge relief to finally be able to socialise, get that much needed release and the excitement of things to look forward to. As we head into winter and with 2022 just around the corner, how can we prepare ourselves to go into it feeling focused, positive and optimistic? The difference between extraordinary and ordinary is just that little extra. Those familiar with my past will know I’m a huge advocate of staying active and believing in yourself, setting goals to give you drive and purpose, and I’m passionate about helping others ignite that fire in the belly and the confidence that great achievements aren’t just for the Usain Bolts of the world. I’ve met many amazing people overcoming adversity to run across entire countries after beating cancer, losing 10 stone or even losing limbs. I ran the toughest footrace on earth across the Sahara, humbled and in awe of other runners of all ages, sizes and even a blind man being guided over the 250km of scorching desert. My own life-pivot began 10 years ago when I was injured in a car accident that left me in constant back pain for a couple of years, pain that even now still wakes me in the night, but that accident was the kick in the arse I needed to break a

lifestyle, which although comfortable was not realising my full potential, not even close. This ignited my running journey which went from struggling to run one single mile pain-free to running 100’s of miles across jungles, deserts, mountains and even a giant frozen lake in Outer Mongolia, several of which were world-firsts and something I’m very proud of. This brought more opportunities leading to me being invited to speak at schools and businesses and even Buckingham Palace - mingling with celebs was this random bloke from Peterborough telling his story!
The comfort zone is where dreams go to die. I’ve learned so much from my experiences and urge you to challenge yourself beyond your own comfort zones, learn how much more you’re capable of, and believe in the value of investing in yourself to become whatever you want to be. I just wanted to run a mile as part of my rehabilitation, I had no idea where it would lead, but it was literally life changing and all it took was a little nudge (from a guy in a Land Rover not watching the road). Investing in yourself could be as simple as going for regular walks or runs, a Parkrun or a weekend away hill walking, or to find yourself a personal trainer and commit to just a few weeks to get started - believe me you’ll feel amazing for it. I can’t afford that! PT’s, events, coaches and retreats come with a cost and you may think you can’t afford to invest in yourself this way - yet you might easily spend as much on a slightly newer TV or phone, or nights out that may make you feel better for a short while but then it’s back to the same grind afterwards. Investing in yourself however, can change you forever - your mindset, self-belief and in turn your whole life and relationships with those around you too, even if just in the smallest of ways. The best investment you’ll ever make is in YOU.
As winter is upon us and the New Year fast approaches, set your own goals big or small. Ask yourself if you could be any version of yourself this time next year, what lifestyle would you lead, what diet and exercise would enable you to look and feel the way you want to, and importantly what small steps could you start taking today to head in that direction?

There’s a diverse range of students at UCP, making it an exciting community to be a part of. Not everyone is from the local area as students come from all over the UK. There’s a mixture of ages – but mature students (those over 21 years of age) can feel right at home as a third of students are older when they start their studies. We also have onsite nursery facilities on our Peterborough campus, which benefits those students who are parents and require childcare support. Do you offer support for students from low income backgrounds? UCP offers bursaries for students from low income households and also care leaver bursaries. In addition, we appoint Student Ambassadors each year who apply for an engagement bursary of £1,000. How long does it take to study a degree? The majority of courses at UCP are full honours degrees that take three years to complete. Whilst a festive shopping trip is always something to look forward to, we’re still being reminded to be careful and follow safety guidance to stop the spread of Covid, so please stay safe. The virus remains among us and rising rates in older people coupled with building pressures on local health and education services led to Peterborough health leaders asking the Government to grant the city ‘Enhanced Response Area’ status to help keep it in check. The ERA status allows health chiefs to push for additional support to accelerate and target vaccination roll out to 12-15 year-olds, increase

Cllr Irene Walsh, Peterborough City Council’s Cabinet Member for Adults and Health, added: “Peterborough increasingly had higher infection rates than the East of England average, and England in general, because of issues that we are all aware of including the type of major employment in the area and our demography. “The last thing we want to do is move to even tighter restrictions as winter approaches – so by acting now, using our common sense and following the sensible measures we all know work we can make a difference. “This will help us keep our hospitals working, our children in schools and our economy functioning and I would urge people to look at these measures and take them very seriously.”

Tom Holland’s three-story Spider-Man arc – in the Marvel Cinematic Universe at least – reportedly comes to a close among a cluster of rumour-mongering. Gossip is rife of the two previous Spidey actors – Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield (sorry, Nicholas Hammond) – making cameos as a fractured Multiverse is unleashed. For the first time in the cinematic history of the Webslinger, our friendly neighbourhood hero is unmasked and no longer able to separate his normal life from the high-stakes of being a superhero – with support from his girlfriend MJ (Zendaya). But when he asks for help from Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) to reverse time so his identity remains a secret, this dangerously opens up multiple alternate universes (hence the rumours) – forcing him
to discover what it truly means to be Spider-Man. What we do know is both Alfred Molina’s Dr Octopus and Jamie Foxx’s Electro will definitely appear from previous Spidey movies – with Thomas Haden-Church’s Sandman, Rhys Ifan’s Lizard and Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin reportedly strong possibilities. Sadly, at the time of going to press there’s nothing more concrete than that, and a lot of mouth-watering details may never make it out until the film hits the big-screen just prior to Christmas. What hits the wall and sticks between now and then is anyone’s guess…

Bill Bailey Returns to Peterborough Arena! Both stand-up comedy fans and Strictly aficionados will be glad to hear that following a forced touring hiatus due to the global pandemic, Bill Bailey has announced his long awaited return to comedy with a brand new tour for the new year, which includes a date at Peterborough Arena. musical comedy show ‘Bill Bailey’s Remarkable Guide to the Orchestra’. In 2011 Bill was also invited to perform at Sonisphere Rock Festival in Knebworth alongside headliners Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax, where Bill rocked out with some 60,000 metal fans at one of the biggest comedy gigs in the world.

erforming his new En Route to Normal show on January 2 next year, it’s fair to say that despite 2020’s various lockdowns Bill Bailey still managed to end the year on a high after winning popular BBC television show Strictly Come Dancing thanks to his impressive moves and the amazing choreography of his dance partner Oti Mabuse. Prior to Strictly however Bill had already carved a reputation for himself as one of the country’s most popular comedians thanks to his roles on shows such as Never Mind the Buzzcocks, Black Books and Spaced, alongside various panel show appearances on shows such as QI, Have I Got News for You and 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown. Bill is also known for being an exceptionally talented musician, which he showcased in his performances at London’s Royal Albert Hall and the resulting critically acclaimed BBC2 television broadcast of his

Sarah’s One to Watch: Fin Taylor Considering it’s a special winter edition of ESP, I thought it would be nice to bring back an old feature to my comedy column where I write about a comedian who you may not have heard of yet, but you’ll certainly hear about in future thanks to their rising reputation on the UK comedy scene. This month ahead of his performance at the Key Theatre I’ve decided to focus on Fin Taylor, who’s perhaps best known for appearing on The Mash Report and Live at the Apollo but has also gained somewhat of a ‘cult comedian’ status after having several successful Edinburgh Fringe shows, including Whitey McWhiteface, Lefty Tighty Righty Loosey and When Harassy Met Sally. Since his first full Fringe show back in 2016 Fin Taylor quickly established himself as a proprietor of political satire that truly hits a nerve, and has been described by the Scotsman as ‘the most discussed and critically praised

A talented Peterborough musician reporting on the city’s best gigs, bands and venues for ESP
LOCAL MUSIC SCENE IS ALIVE AND KICKING I think we occasionally take for granted just how many good venues and hard working bands and musicians we have in this city. A quick look at the ESP Gig Guide gives the avid music fan plenty to occupy themselves with over the next few months.
CHILDREN OF THE REVOLUTION’S LAST DANCE (FOR NOW!) It's not been the best kept secret, the word has slowly been getting around and we have only just officially announced it, but my band Children of the Revolution will be going on an undetermined hiatus from next year. We have been active on the local scene for the last 16 years but were actually formed 21 years ago as a band to play at school functions and friends house parties! For the last decade and a half we have consistently hit over 100 gigs a year playing pubs, clubs, festivals, weddings, birthdays, you name it, all over the UK - and we have loved every second of it. At the start of 2022, my wife Hannah and I are fulfilling our lifelong ambition to travel extensively. The desire to do so has been exacerbated during the restrictions of the last two years and the time just feels right. So, we intend to pack our bags early next year and hit the road for as long as we possibly can. I want to extend a personal thank you to our loyal and ever increasing support base who are the reason we put everything into every gig we play and have enjoyed it all so much. All I ever wanted from the band was for us to create a following and be part of the Peterborough music scene, following in the footsteps of the local bands I used to go and watch as a teenager. When I look back now,

I could never have imagined the band that started in a school classroom would not only turn into a nationally recognised function band, but also allow me to do what I love with my best friends as my profession for so many years. The band wouldn't be where it is without the sheer hard work, dedication and unbelievable talent of those I've had beside me on the stage over the years. I have worked them all to the bone many times and they have never faltered, not once, always delivering exceptional performances no matter where we are playing. We will hit the Peterborough scene one more time leading up to Christmas playing a number of our favourite venues in what we are calling 'The Last Dance Tour', culminating in a big finale at The Brewery Tap on Friday December 17 which is sure to be an epic night. We will be back at some point, it's a hiatus not the end. I will be popping back now and again over the next few years so if the situation allows we will get the band together for a night here or there. I hope to see you all before the year is out.

The Ostrich Inn continues to be a big supporter of all live music. My top pick for November is the original acoustic night featuring three fantastic acts on the same show. Pembroke Tenneson, Meg McPartlin and Richard Hall will all take to the stage on Thursday November 18, individually performing original tracks. Any fans of folk, country, classic rock or just original acoustic music will absolutely love this line up of very talented and entertaining musicians. The next date after that is Thursday December 16 when myself, David James Smith, Mark Stevens and Adam Leon will keep you entertained with some more great acoustic tunes. If you haven't tried out Coyotes Bar and Grill on Northminster Road yet, you've been missing out. The American style bar is not only serving up some good chicken wings and burgers but it also has live music every weekend. A
while back I was at Coyotes watching my good friends High Rollers play. After a few cold Buds and plenty of wings, with a great band playing, I said to my wife 'we could almost be in Vegas right now!' As some of you may know I'm a huge Vegas fan, so that may be the highest compliment I've ever paid a Peterborough venue! They have a busy schedule leading up to Christmas, see the Gig Guide in this issue and keeping checking the online version for more on www.espmag.co.uk. During lockdown and all the restrictions for live events that then followed, I truly missed the hustle and bustle of a sweaty pub gig. Now, I know we all had to keep safe and stay apart and some may still feel that way, but for those that feel ready to pack a dance-floor once again there's surely no better venue for this than Charters Bar. It's a unique place to play, I've done it more times than I can remember, and the bottle neck that is created at the far end of the boat by the stage creates an atmosphere like no other in town. I'm looking forward to playing there once again in November but also getting to see a few bands there before the year is out. They are also doing regular chilled acoustic Sunday afternoon sessions too, as well as vinyl and DJ nights, covering all bases for Peterborough's music fans.
DIVISION ROCK SOME COUNTRY A few weeks back I only popped to The Ploughman in Werrington for a quick beer but ended up staying for the entire evening as the music was just too good. It was the first chance I've had to see the acoustic duo Division doing their thing and I was so impressed with their harmonies, range of songs and playing ability that there was just no way I was going to leave early. Adam and Mark have been playing together for a few years now and the cohesion between them is very evident, they also enjoy some good interaction with the crowd allowing people in attendance to send them song requests via social media. I thought I was the only one locally trying to get away with playing random country songs by people no one’s ever heard of but I was wrong. After they played a song by the American country star Luke Combs I was quick to fire in the requests, and credit to them both they duly delivered. They even managed a Johnny Cash medley which as someone who loves a good musical mash up was the outstanding moment of the set for me. It's not just country music they play, there is a bit of something for everyone from the likes of Simon and Garfunkel, U2 and The Eagles so be sure to check the gig guide for their upcoming local shows.

AUSTIN GOLD We think Peterborough band Austin Gold are destined for great things and it looks like 2022 is already set to be an amazing year. Austin Gold have been busy. Really busy! After a fantastic 2019 with the release of their second album AG2 and various performances at major festivals, including Rambling Man Fair supporting The Darkness and Foreigner, lead singer/guitarist/songwriter David James Smith set to work on their biggest album to date. Recording with their longstanding producer, Andy Hawkins, Chris Ogden (Drums) Lee Churchill (Bass) and Dave Smith wanted to capture the popularity of the first album Before Dark Clouds with the sonic size of the second record… and then some!
Signing to TMR management, who secured the band’s second record deal with OFF YA ROCKA RECORDINGS permitted the band to push the boundaries previously unexplored. A personnel change welcomed Adam Leon on keyboards and backing vocals replacing Russell Hill, giving Austin Gold a new power playing live, which was evident on the main stage at Weyfest in Surrey, supporting Scouting for Girls and UB40 no less, to thousands of music hungry fans. OSTRACISED Fans of punk and post punk have been getting their fill with the increasingly popular Ostracised nights held on the 2nd Thursday of the month at The Ostrich Inn Closed Circuit, The Fyzz Wallis Band and Manic will feature at the Thursday December 9 show. These events dovetail nicely with the independently promoted nights that continue to be hosted at the venue, The No Gods No Managers Festive showcase will be held on Thursday December 30 with three bands stacking an end of the year punk celebration.
TIME TO SEE NEW BAND 2020 VISION SHIELSY’S HOPING FOR A FESTIVE HIT My good mate Anthony Shiels is no fool. He knows that if you write a great Christmas song then you could be set for life. He's worn many musical hats over the years but under the banner of his current solo project, Glove Compartment, he released the appropriately titled 'Christmas is Ruined' last year and as is the way with festive tunes, the track is set for another push again this time around. It's a tragically funny and entertaining song that bucks the usual trend of the Christmas genre, demonstrating some excellent musicianship and clever song writing and, to keep it authentic, it even has sleigh bells on the recording. You can listen to the track on most streaming providers or help Glove Compartment take a chunk out of Noddy Holder's Christmas royalties by purchasing the track on iTunes.
Peterborough’s vibrant music scene has a new contender with 2020 Vision hitting the circuit and brining us some fresh tunes. Shaun May from the band told ESP – “The concept of our band was created during Covid and we’ve been working hard since the restrictions lifted to get out gigging around Peterborough. “The band's line up is drums, bass, rhythm guitar with backing vocals, lead guitarist and our lead singer. We’re covering some of the really popular current bands and also some of the more technical ones that a lot of bands don't take on. We have some very experienced musicians in the band, but we also have a couple of really good younger musicians which gives us a really good age balance and chemistry. “ 2020 Vision have chosen their material very carefully to create a great mix of new songs and some older favourites which are already going down well in local venues. You can expect covers of songs by artists such as The Cranberries, Green Day, Bryan Adams, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jet, The Ramones, Metallica, Radiohead, Foo Fighters and many more. Their first gig in Farcet went down a storm with everyone up and dancing and the band getting three encores which can’t be bad! Events Crafts at Peterborough Museum As the big shopathaon approaches you’ll need some bright ideas and if you fancy something a little different head to the first family Christmas Craft Fayre at Peterborough Museum & Art Gallery. The event on Saturday November 27 and Sunday November 28 will feature a wide variety of gifts from local producers, artists and craft makers, with stalls spread throughout the museum’s historic Georgian building. It will be great for stocking fillers and unique presents for loved ones, such as handmade jewellery. Festive treats on offer will include a vegan bakery, a free mince pie when you buy a hot drink at The Georgian Kitchen, and reindeer food for children to leave out on Christmas Eve. Over the weekend youngsters can also make their own tree decorations in the children’s craft area and if you’re rubbish at wrapping there’s even a giftwrapping service at the event. Once families have stocked up on festive gifts and food, they can enjoy the museum’s historical highlights across its eight permanent galleries, such as the Victorian operating theatre and Jurassic collection, which will be open to explore during the fayre. Peterborough Museum & Art Gallery’s Christmas Craft Fayre will be open from 10am to 4pm on both days. Entry is free.
Peterborough Cathedral Christmas Craft and Gift Market We’re all being encouraged to back Peterborough and shop locally to support our businesses here so it’s good to see the return of Peterborough Cathedral’s popular Christmas Craft and Gift Market. It’ll be packed with dozens of stalls but timed entry will keep the queues down and visitors well spaced. It’s the ideal way to find something a little different with a unique range of items on sale including hand crafted jewellery, glassware, wooden items, painted silk scarves, vegan soaps, bamboo socks, candles, soft toys, Christmas cards and homewares; not to mention honey, gin and fudge! You can visit the market at a choice of sessions starting on Friday November 19 from 10am until 5pm and then from 6.30pm until 9pm and on Saturday November 20 from 10am – 5pm. The market stalls will be spread over a wide area within the Cathedral to allow plenty of room to shop without jostling with a crowd. There will also be a one-way system in place and entry times will be staggered to avoid over-crowding at busy times. Christmas events at the Cathedral If you want to get into the festive spirit Peterborough Cathedral is the place to head and there are plenty of seasonal events to enjoy. One of the annual highlights set to return is the Cathedral Christmas Concert on Saturday December 18, a choral spectacular performed by the Cathedral Choir, Youth Choir, and Festival Chorus, featuring all your favourites and familiar Christmas carols to sing along to. A New Chapter for the
Iron Horse
Richard’s retirement this didn’t mark the end and he’s keeping it in the family having transferred the day to day running of the business to his daughters Verity, Hollie and Kirsten and the team at the Ranch House. Richard said – "The next generation of Iron Horse have been the driving force throughout our transformation in the last 2 years. I am confident they will take what we have built and develop it further for an exciting future."
It’s no secret that the pandemic hit the hospitality industry hard but some venues like the Iron Horse Ranch House in Market Deeping turned it into an opportunity to develop their business and build a better future. Since July 2020 the team has been working hard to transform the outside space at the riverside venue into a multipurpose events area. The now unrecognisable space, started with an outside stage and Tikki bar and this year’s developments have added a new marquee, decked dance floor and secondary stage. Named the Secret Stable, it’s no surprise the new venue is fast becoming the home of live events in the Deepings. The venue recently hosted a retirement party for the owner Richard Swinscoe with Saturday’s headline band the Foo Fighterz UK Tribute, raising funds for Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice. Despite
Verity added – "Myself and the team have been working in the business for a number of years. We have always had plans to develop the events side of the business but never had the resources to take it further. Although covid was hard for us, it has given us opportunities that we never had before through government grants. The restrictions allowed us to develop our takeaway business which helped us survive through the closed months; downtime was used to start the building works. We have all contributed to what you see today, from carpentry, painting, decorating, design and lots of cleaning. The finished venue is something we are all very proud of.” The new space has already been put to use, hosting various events including bike nights, drag events, live music, comedy nights, pop up markets and their first private booking for the Deeping Business Awards. They now have the flexibility to host events inside and outside which has extended their events season.
