Project Xperiment - Esports Teams and Creative Revenue Diversification

100 Thieves are developing a video game, G2 Esports founded a music label, and Misfits are now tapping heavily into the creator economy.

Evermore teams are taking a diversified approach: their own talent management agencies, content studios, music labels, consumer products and more. The promised land of meaningful media rights revenue seems a distant dream whilst most tournament revenues, even with more generous splits from publishers, aren’t enough to balance the books with endlessly escalating player wages tipping the scales and breaking the tables.

How creative can teams get without losing focus and, potentially, identity? Is there a risk here, or is this par for the course, and is this situation the same across regions? Perhaps it’s no bad thing, but then what does it say about the competitive gaming landscape?

The Esports Ecosystem Omelette

One must break eggs in order to make an omelette. To make a really good one you’ve got to experiment and be ready to adapt; different herbs, butter, temperature, cheese, time on the stove.

From eggs to esports, each competitive gaming ecosystem is a different beast, and different models can still have an excellent end product. In 2023 with partner programmes or equivalent in VALORANT, PUBG, Mobile Legends, PUBG Mobile, League of Legends & more, alongside different approaches elsewhere, we take a look at how they’re going and what defines success for all parties involved.

Moreover how are, how can and how should publishers work with third parties outside of just tournament operations, from data, to the fan experience and more?

Esports Events Augmented

Esports events have undergone significant change in the past few years. Interest in esports grew exponentially during the pandemic, but they didn’t necessarily have the easiest time going back to online only, and now, as the world returns to live events, this means more in-person tournaments too – with some on a larger scale than before.

How can organisers in APAC leverage new trends and tools to engage a wider audience? What do the fans want to see and what are some new, realistic revenue streams – beyond simply ticketing and F&B? Lastly, what factors determine the sustainability of esport events in the Asian market?
