Building Elements While selecting and designing building elements including doors, windows and other repetitive elements, the designer should aim for achieving efficiency and reduce cost. The designer can achieve this by using modularity and repetitiveness in elements.

Windows

Jordan School Expansion Project (JSEP)

All usable spaces shall have windows opening outside for daylight, vision and ventilation purposes. Best orientation for windows is north for elimination of heat and direct light as well as providing constant lighting. Second best orientation is south for easy control of direct light that cause heat and glare. General windows are preferred to have sills at minimum height of 90cm in order to be above student’s deskwork surface. Total preferable complete height of windows is 180cm with upper fixed part and a sunscreen devise and light shelf incorporated as per recommendation in Sunscreen Devices section next.

Funded by the United States Agency for International Development

Al-Rasheed Secondary School for Boys

Jordan School Expansion Project (JSEP) | Al-Rasheed Secondary School for Boys

(JTIC) and the Jordan Energy Efficient Building Code’s (JEEB) requirements. Keeping the same total width of 40 cm, the designer can either keep or develop the wall section for next stage. • Roof Construction The roof of the building receives the most direct solar radiation per m2. In low-rise buildings such as the case of our schools, it represent a large percentage of the surface area as well. The roof construction should also achieve the U value requirement of the JEEB and JTI Codes.

Corridors preferably have widows opening from adjacent spaces to provide visual connection, daylight and ventilation except for labs, workshops and multi-purpose room. Corridor windows should be easily operable to help control noise in educational spaces. Both fixed vision and operable ventilation windows should have double-glazing clear glass, the double-glazing is not for thermal reason in this case, it is used rather to eliminate noise from adjacent spaces, when desired. Toilet windows to have fixed lower parts glass, with prismatic glass up to 150cm high to ensure privacy, upper parts to be operable and of clear glass type. Windows with double-glazing panels should have different thicknesses for glass panels to help in noise reduction proposed is (6+12+5). 24
