Case : Communal building in the Aaltokangas Housing area
My diploma thesis is a design-oriented thesis with a conceptual approach. The hybrid building in the centre of the detached housing area of the Aaltokangas, the Northern most parts of City of Oulu, is a communal building for its residents. My diploma thesis aims to create a concept for a communal space becoming an extension of one's own home, being applicable also to other areas beyond Aaltokangas. It is a place to meet neighbours, hold gatherings for friends or family celebrations, and have shared activities such as yoga sessions, hobby circles or pop-up events. There is also room for concentrated working if it is sometimes not possible at home. In this hybrid building, there is also a temporary possibility to have a good night's sleep if, for example, everyday life with toddlers does not allow it.
This diploma thesis touches upon the theme of designing neighbourhoods of social interaction. It is known that the quality, type, and functionality of communal spaces appear to be the key design factors influencing their social interaction. I was also inspired by the idea of coworking spaces and how this theme could be applied and stretched to cover broader contents needed to serve the contemporary housing area.
01
A conceptual approach to create hybrid spaces to support everyday family life and social interaction.
01
Communal space in the Aaltokangas area - co-working space along with other facilities for the neighbourhood is a response to the shift in working culture that the world faced in early 2020. Such a space provides a formal working environment for those looking for such a solution. The space houses different workstations catering to all, i.e., from small groups to individual stations. To balance the work areas, break-out zones with indoor screening, reading areas, sleep areas, dry café and warming stations, outdoor courtyard, and outdoor working pods have been incorporated.
User scenarios
Functions for the building are derived from the user scenarios, and the building mass is created considering the site analysis. In the later part of the thesis, floor plans are developed with multi-purpose spaces, wooden rectangular boxes with different functions, and flexible furniture which also could respond to the different activities proposed in the space.

Developing the design concept
02
Several spaces in one
The idea is to develop a ‘capable space’, one that expresses desire and usefulness. This is not a room, either space to be assembled.
Spatial and functional ideas
The Module
The module can be a single block or repeated side by side. It can be stacked up on each other or by the side to create a space underneath.
Multipurpose Spaces
Space sharing is a concept densely connected to the lifestyle and work habits of upcoming times. The idea is to have a space that can be used for multiple purposes. The single space can be partitioned.
03
Coworking spaces for the users
Facilities for working remotely should be included in the designed space.
Spatial and functional ideas
Visual connectivity, natural light and view
Visually connected with each other where needed, motivated to work by seeing others work around them. Make social interactions easier.
Diffuse natural light enhances one's experience inside a building.
A fluid parasite
Such prototypes can be proposed in a place with fewer people and detached houses, or in a densely populated urban setting with high-rise buildings, or even in a place with block houses or row houses.

Site analysis
To design for the diploma work, I have chosen a site in the Aaltokangas area. The neighborhood is rather new compared to other settlements in the city of Oulu; it consists of detached houses, and the site is next to the daycare center of this area.
The daycare center is in the middle of the neighborhood, making it more accessible for everyone in this specific area, and that is why I chose my site, the open area, next to this daycare center, something within the walking radius of the users. People living in this neighborhood are mostly single families with family members of all ages; thus, the functions of the design building are derived from the user scenarios so that the space can be used

The site has many existing trees.
Placing the built form on site with outdoor space around it. The existing trees around the building act as a buffer to noise and motion on the street.
Creating two entrances to the site and reducing a few trees to place the built form on the site.
Having the outdoor space around the building results in having views of nature on all sides of the building.

Floor plans
All these programs seamlessly flow into each other, giving one freedom to choose and maneuver easily. The natural lighting and the outdoor courtyard connect the users to the natural elements and aid in invigorating them. Being modular in design, the space can be planned in various neighborhoods or nodes in the city center. All that is required is a small parcel of land.

02 Oulu Art Museum
Case : Art museum in Oulu city centre
13
Concept
Main idea is to have a museum that allows artworks to be enjoyed from the outside of the building as well, the tendency is to celebrate the work of art along with the other outdoor public activity.
The other idea is that the functions inside the building can spill over in the outdoors to create more engaging activities for the public around
In order to achieve these two ideas I thought of not putting the functions by the edges of the given site rather to work with the shape of the functions to create pocket spaces outdoors for engaging activities
These pocket spaces will create scope for functions like outdoor cafes, outdoor exhibition areas and outdoor activity areas.
14
Cityscape
The plot is centrally located in the center of Oulu, at the intersection of longer pedestrian streets (Kauppurienkatu & Isokatu) thus it is important to take into account the functionality of the facilities and services from the pedestrian perspective and create interesting urban spaces between buildings. The urban space should be a pleasant space where people want to spend more time and feel safe as well as find interesting activities to enjoy throughout the year at different times of the day and on different festivals.
Once the pedestrian area of Kauppurienkatu is enhanced with such activities it will be easier to form a connection with the greenery located in Vaaranpuisto right next to the site, but the current Kauppurien aukio is not using all of its potential as a part of the green city structure. Revitalizing the site and its surrounding by creating a public hub is needed.
Such outdoor exhibition areas will encourage young and local artists to display their works regularly to the public of Oulu city and tourists visiting the site.
15
The Oulu Art Museum features an outdoor exhibition area designed to encourage more local artists to display their works. This area extends from the courtyard situated within the site to the terrace of the building.
Site surrounding
The block is easily accessible for pedestrians from all four sides. In addition, these entrances are made for the convenience of getting faster into the inner space of the block.
The site is also easily accessible by cars and public transportation like buses. There is a cycling route through the site for better connectivity in a sustainable way.
The hotel block and the conference block are located on Saaristonkatu side as it makes the vehicular access to the site easier.
Section through the site and site surrounding
Site plan
The designed plot has other functions like the hotel and conference center which creates a scope for the site to have people from all over the world attending seminars, conferences or shows as well as tourists staying at the hotel in the city center near other important facilities. This has a positive impact for the museum as well to represent Oulu’s art and culture to greater audiences. The inner courtyard created by the building blocks of the site will become the next public hub of Oulu city center with different user groups enjoying different activities on the same site.

Rethinking the Concept of Community Center in a Densely Populated Area
The project aimed to create awareness regarding the fact that the existing condition of the community centers in our city is failing to contribute to its community thus we must rethink of the concept of community centers differently, that is, community centers are not only for rental purposes rather it has a greater role to play in the community. A good community center can enhance the image of the community in many different ways.
For such a densely populated area with almost no open area for daily community and recreational activities, it was important to accommodate the missing activities of different age groups of the community in this project. The basic idea of the project was to provide an open ground for the community in the given site that will be accessible for everyone and to accommodate other facilities in the built form. The key concept was to make the community more sustainable economically, politically, socially, culturally through this project.
This design will provide the people of the community with a space for community gatherings during festivals, events, customs, and political issues as well as benefitting the local clubs, voluntary activities and any individual through skill-sharing and training. The project will also act as a place of shelter in times of community tragedies.

Center for the Pavement Dwelling Communities
Case : I actively contributed to project design and development during workshops as part of my volunteer role.
Voluntary Work
Site Location: Maniknagar, Dhaka, Bangladesh.
Duration: 15 weeks
In 2014, Paraa, a design and architecture studio, collaborated with Sajida Foundation, a well-established non-governmental organization, to create a 'Center for the Pavement Dwelling Communities' in Dhaka, Bangladesh. This project was an extension of Paraa's ongoing research initiative, 'Cycle of Care,' and aimed to support beneficiaries of the 'Amrao Manush - we are people too' social development program.
The design and construction of the project were set to be built within an existing structure in Maniknagar, located close to the Kmalapur Railway Station and Sadarghat. The land area has been leased out by Dhaka South City Corporation to Sajida Foundation.
The architectural program laid out to Paraa was for the following an emergency night time shelte

Basic health care corne
Counseling and awareness unit
Training room for recipients to engage them in sustainable profession
Space for leisure activities
However, through further analysis of needs by Paraa, the program was later rethought to accommodate a public toilet in collaboration with Water Aid Bangladesh.
