Welcome I am pleased to welcome you to the 31st season of the Chippewa Valley Youth Symphony (CVYS). It is a privilege to be the music director during such a milestone in this organization’s history. For 31 years, the CVYS has provided an enrichment experience for many talented youth. This experience enhances their capabilities as musicians and provides an outlet to showcase their talents. The students provide concerts throughout the year and enjoy the opportunity to provide a full symphonic experience that is accessible to all in the community. The Chippewa Valley Youth Symphony has a depth of talent and musicianship. This season will bring students from the greater Chippewa Valley as well as Menomonie, Rice Lake, Cadott, and other Western Wisconsin communities. We have over sixty musicians this year, ranging from seventh graders to high school seniors. Each Tuesday evening there is an energy and excitement when students gather for rehearsal. They are very dedicated and focused and it is an honor to work with them each week. In addition, the friendships created provide these young people wonderful connections with others as passionate as they are about music. On behalf of all the music staff, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to each of them for their commitment and motivation in pursuit of excellence. I am very proud of each and every one of them. Relax and enjoy as we celebrate our 31st season! Thank you for your support. -Peter Haberman

About Us The Chippewa Valley Youth Symphony (CVYS) is celebrating its 31st concert season. The youth symphony is an auditioned music group with a diverse student population representing communities from a 70 mile radius. Under the direction of Music Director, Peter Haberman, the youth symphony will continue to provide rich music experiences for exceptional musicians in seventh to twelfth grade. Educational opportunities have been expanded for youth symphony members over the past few years. During rehearsals students are provided small group instruction through sectionals that are taught by university and community musicians. Each week, the musicians refine their music in full rehearsals under the direction of Dr. Haberman. To broaden student music experiences, the youth symphony now offers the opportunity for small ensemble groups to play and perform. These groups will be invited to play throughout the year, representing the youth symphony in the community. In addition, several of the musicians will have an opportunity to perform with professional musicians through the Eau Claire Chamber Orchestra and the Chippewa Valley Symphony throughout the concert season. The Chippewa Valley Youth Symphony provides four or five concerts each year. One important aspect of the youth symphony is the opportunity for the musicians to give back to communities through the gift of music. Each spring, the youth symphony visits other communities in Western Wisconsin, providing a full symphonic performance for many who have never experienced this type of live music. Peer performance provides a unique music experience for both the players and listeners.

History Founded in 1980, the Chippewa Valley Youth Symphony has grown over the years. Dr. Peter Haberman began his tenure as the Music Director in 2010. Through his guidance the youth symphony has developed a strong sense of musicianship. Additionally, more communities are represented and there is a greater awareness of this organization in the Chippewa Valley. He has expanded the learning experience both for the young musicians and also for university music education majors, who have an opportunity to work with the students. Founded in 1980 by Colleen Bates and Ivar Lunde, this organization has had a long and successful history of exposing young musicians to a full symphonic orchestra experience. Ivar Lunde retired after 25 years with the youth symphony and Eugene Power, a local music teacher was the music director for four years. During his tenure, Gene Power implemented auditions and the music outreach tour. He moved from Eau Claire in 2010 to pursue a Masters Degree in conducting. The Chippewa Valley Youth Symphony provides young, talented musicians a means of expression and contributes to the diverse and rich music arts community here. CVYS is a non-profit organization and relies on donations and support from the community, businesses and the families of the youth who participate. All donations are tax-deductible and directly support the educational experiences of these young and talented musicians.
