AfterWorldWarI,anewthreatfloodedintothemindsoftheAmericanpopulation.Communism wasontheriseanditwascausingalotofconcernwithintheAmericanpopulace.TheRedScare wasthenationwidehysteriainAmerica,causedbythespreadofcommunisminthe1920's.Thisfear ofcommunismbledintomanyaspectsofAmericanlife.ItcausedtheU.S.governmenttotargetany Americanwho'spatriotismwasinquestion,anditcontributedtoAmericans'negativeattitudes towardsforeignersinthe1920's.Inadditionto"suspiciousindividuals",theU.S.governmentalso challengedlaborunionsandintimidatedliberalconstituencies.TheRedScareledtoarangeof actionsthathadafar–reachingandenduringeffectonUSgovernmentandshowmorecontent PresidentWoodrowWilsonappointedA.MitchellPalmertothepostofattorneygeneralin1919, anditwashewholaterestablishedtheFederalBureauofInvestigation(FBI).PalmerappointedJ.
