Most narratives include speculations on what is wrong with men, why do they have more health problems, why do they drink more, why are they more male suicides, the list is quite long. It seems that the perspective most people have towards males is that of negativity and criticism. That being said, women are also often viewed with suspicion by men who have been conditioned to be wary of a women’s advances, that there is always an ulterior motive behind it. Have you ever wondered why these negative perspectives thrive in our society? Well, one of the reasons is that the expectations and standards that are set for each gender can be unrealistic, and in most cases damaging. Toxic Masculinity The term toxic masculinity was coined by psychologist Shepherd Bliss in the 80’s as he worked on trying to mark a distinction between the positive and negative characteristics of men.
