VINTAGE MANOR HOUSE IN BROMLEY
ivete floor lamp
London borough of Bromley just became even more and exciting, after Ktesius decided to take a perennial manor house and transform it into a collection of seven luxurious apartments with private terraces and gardens, thus presenting Ravensbourne.
When it comes to interior design, Ktesius, the developers of the new property, decided to work with CUE Design for the renewal of apartment 3. The result was an upscale, comfortable apartment where details were not left to chance, making this incredible project and its designers the recipients of the 2018 Interior Design Build Award. It was CUE Design’s interior designer Georgina Chamberlain who led the project, creating two concepts from scratch before going on to present them to the developers of Ravensbourne. Eventually, Ktesius went with the “timeless, subtle, elegant scheme”. In a subsequent stage of the project, CUE Design proposed several furniture and lighting options that would come to close the decor of the new apartment, making it look even more comfortable and luxurious. Apartment 3 came to be one of a kind. Taking advantage of the renewed manor house, the new open plan living room also features a dining room area that is followed by a sleek kitchen island and counter. What first strike us when looking at this project for the first time was the subtle use of golden details all around the room, creating an
INTERIORS WITH A TWIST // LUXURIOUS APART-
unmistakable sense of richness that still doesn’t overpower the room. A lot of subtle white and pastel hues were used as a juxtaposition for the golden elements, such as the creamy white sofa and the pastel pink accent chairs, which still both boasts stunning golden decorative details. The marble and brass center table is yet another amazing piece that was not left to chance. It is noticeable how it matches the marble and gold-plated palm tree standing lamp on the side of the couch, a signature piece by mid-century inspired brand, Essential Home. Looking around the room we can see gorgeous minimal lighting fixtures, making Ivete lamp by Essential Home an amazing accent piece that stands out from every point in the open plan living room. As for the color scheme of the dining and kitchen areas, CUE Design’s Georgina Chamberlain went with more solid and classic tones. Here, we can see Essential Home’s Collins dining and bar chairs upholstered in rich beige and teal velvet. To bring it all together,
we can see a few more gold-plated details peeking around the room, from the feet of the chairs to the amazing pendant lamps above the kitchen island. An amazing private interior design project by CUE Design that comes to show contemporary luxury doesn’t have to mean over cluttered houses. Much on the contrary, here we can see a stunning and luxurious apartment where comfort, usability and attention to details are key to make a house into a home.

However, at the same time, they add a wow factor that will inevitable amaze their clients when the project is completed. But when we talked about styles and, the team confided that they don’t necessarily feel tied to a specific style or aesthetics. Instead, they believe that, as interior designers, it is their job to be on the lookout for new styles and trends as a way to be prepared to meet their clients’ expectations, and to ensure every project they work on is one of a kind. And what makes INTERIOR DESIGN + projects so unique? Well, let’s go back to the beginning when we talked about functionality and
Based in Florence, INTERIOR DESIGN + and their concept were born amidst the desks of the Italian Academy of Florence. However, it was only a few years later that the project became a reality, when, in 2016, Valentina Malevolti and Martina Mustur officially founded INTERIOR DESIGN +. How did this happen? After having graduated from the University of Wales and from the Accademia Italiana Arte, Moda e Design, in Interior and product design, the two designers went on to working in a few architectural studios in Florence, where they acquired expertise in their fields. Cut to some years later, and the designers felt it was time they had their own studio, thus founding INTERIOR DESIGN +. Nowadays, the interior design studio focus on creating stunning interior design spaces where both aspects of function and beauty always seem to meet in harmony. What allows for this to happen is an intricate and well thought process where every need of the customers is addressed and met. To make this happen,
INTERIOR DESIGN + follows a thorough process that starts with a meeting with their clients, which is when they listen to all their requests. This is followed by the design phase, where these requests are taken into consideration to make their customers’ concept and vision a reality. Here, furniture and finishes for the interiors are selected in order to create a context that is a combination of the clients’ request and INTERIOR DESIGN +’s team professional experience before moving on to the execution in the actual physical space. And after asking around, we quickly realized this is where the two designers are happier, as they get to play with interior decor and create stunning private homes. Furthermore, when preparing to write this story on INTERIOR DESIGN + we asked the team what drove them, and what they looked for when creating a new interior. We were not surprised to find out that they long to create environments that reflect the needs of their clients, which only makes sense when talking about great interior designers.
beauty. These two aspects are pivotal when the team is designing a new space, whether we are talking about a commercial or private project. During their process, the Firenzebased studio always takes into account that their interiors should be both functional, and beautiful. There will never be a finished interior for INTERIOR DESIGN + if these two conditions are not met. The team believes their interiors should be designed and built to be lived to the fullest, which can only be achieved if they are comfortable, functional and provide their owners with a fantastic living experience.

ARCHITWIST // MID-CENTURY ERA
THE SHAPES AND LINES THAT DEFINED THE MID-CENTURY ERA
ARCHITWIST // MID-CENTURY ERA
to their homelands. In fact, many of them believed, during the 1940s and 1950s, that their forward-looking style could be a way to incite social change, thus creating better and improved societies. When it comes to recognizing the shapes and lines that define the mid-century modern style in architecture, there are a few signs you should pay attention to. First of all, look for flat planes. You’ll notice how all mid-century modern homes have very regular and geometric lines, especially on the roof, with flat planes are one of the most common and distinctive features of
Architecture stopped being just about having a roof over our heads a long time ago. Long before our time, ancient civilizations had been interpreting the way people lived as something much deeper than just having a place to live, or to pray. A clear example of that are works like the Great Pyramids in Egypt, the lost city of Machu Picchu and many other buildings and construction works we all know by heart.
North America, where it was warmly received, especially in Chicago, and the West Coast, where Palm Springs would eventually become the pinnacle of everything mid-century related, from mid-century architecture, to mid-century design and furniture.
However, as time went by, new technologies came into the picture, and so did new techniques and new ways of thinking. Fast forward to the 20th century, and you will quickly realize that the mid-century modern movement first saw the light of day in Northern Europe. Architects like Eero Saarinen and Arne Jacobsen were at the forefront of it all, right next to Le Corbusier and Oscar Niemeyer, which are some of the big names we can’t help but mention.
In the United States, nowadays considered to be mid-century architecture icons such as Mies van der Rohe, Frank Lloyd Wright, and many others, took inspiration from what was being made in Europe, and adapted it to create a style that seemed to uncomplicate things and bring a breath of fresh air to the architecture industry. If you know even just the tiniest bit about architecture, you know that it has an important role as a clear reflector of the times we live in. After the complicated and terrifying years of the First World War, it was time to make things simpler, cleaner, and wider, so the big names we all know turned to what the northern Europeans were doing.
Some time after this, the mid-century style quickly made its way across the ocean into
These great architects wanted to take that European minimalist mindset and bring it
the mid-century style. Then, you will instantly realize that these constructions all have very large windows, because the architects and designers believed that sliding glass doors and other expansive panes of glass would allow for daylight to enter the rooms from multiple angles, creating brighter homes. In third place, look for changes in elevation in the interior architecture floor planning. Putting a small set of stairs in between rooms created split-level spaces, even if the rooms’ height differed only slightly. Another thing designers and architects used to do to create this sense of change in elevation was to build partial walls, or cabinets with varying
ARCHITWIST // MID-CENTURY ERA
heights that would also come to add depth to the room. Finally, mid-century modern homes always seem to have some sort of connection with its surroundings, and with nature. You will find that architects always placed their constructions in areas with lots of natural surroundings. As a way of taking advantage of this fact, rooms usually had several windows, or multiple access points. It is easy to understand how simple, yet complex at the same time, mid-century
modern architecture turned out to be. Nowadays, there are still many architecture students, or just simple architecture lovers who turn to this style when in need of inspiration. Iconic mid-century buildings such as the Farnsworth House by Mies van der Rohe, and the Falling Water House by Frank Lloyd Wright will forever be hold as exceptional examples of architecture, inspiring many generations of architects to come.

THE ART OF LIVING WELL

Once you try the Scandinavian style, you can never go back. Why? Because it gives you the simpleness of a life well spent while bringing style, functionality and harmony to your home and life.
Emerging during the 1930’s within the five Nordic countries, the term is now a recognized design term in the world of a home sweet home style. The simplistic ways of living, the minimalist philosophy emphasises clean lines and simple designs that are surely a must-have in nowadays culture. Beautiful designs plus quality, while sustainability as a key characteristic, is always something we cherish as one should be in harmony with their environment, and things should be made to last rather than be replaced. - An easy way of enhancing an unencumbered lifestyle. Influencing every part of design since the mid1950’s from Europe to the USA, we’ve got a lot to talk about. So, what’s Hygge? “Hygge is not a thing or something you buy... hygge is a state of mind”, claims Morten Georgsen. An uncluttered home and life is the dream we all aspire so, that’s where hygge comes to you: in unexpected ways. That peaceful atmosphere within your friends, family and home is something you create. That’s what hygge is all about and this means bringing that I-lovebeing-here state of mind comes into play. With the late arrival of industrialization to the
MID-CENTURY TALKS // HYGGE LIFESTYLE
Scandinavian region, wood and handcrafting are just a small part of what this all really means. With that in mind, craftsmanship is the tradition and handcrafting is one of the key characteristics of the Scandinavian design and a winning factor when you want to achieve hygge. To achieve this lifestyle you don’t need much and that might be the reason that the Danes are usually the happiest people in the world. The carefully chosen furniture is something to think when decorating your home and it has a huge impact on how you incorporate it. So, subtle coloured plaid in pure wool or cashmere and soft rugs in tonal colours are always things to strive for. In another state of mind, lighting is always a simple yet problematic feature to have - so, in few words, this means: purpose over design. A great way of having the hygge atmosphere is by having an indirect light in your room. Good reading light and that cosy yet-just enough type of focus lighting is something to strive for, while the lighting design is usually charismatic and centred around the mid-century world. Clean lines, organic textures, and minimal shapes are found throughout the mid-century
lighting world along with something we all know and love: music. The emotion, the life and that relaxing feeling that only art can bring to anyone are one of life’s greatest achievements. Inspired by those movements, DelightFULL is one of the few combining some of the strategic moves that the Scandinavian style and hygge have. Creating relaxing pieces of lighting designs to fit any home, the luxury lighting brand brings alive some of greatest musical inspirations. Inspired by icons of music that won’t let themselves pass unnoticed whenever passed on, the high end of Portuguese craftsmanship and artisanship is something that brings life into these mid-century lighting designs. Icons of music that still inspire millions worldwide, the love put into every single one of these lighting designs calls for passion, strategy and most of all, love for what you do and what you create. Materials such as brass, copper and marble are just something you can expect along with the sinuous moves of Tina Turner, the iconic songs and style of Frank Sinatra and the dazzled feeling of Amy Winehouse are incorporated into the lives of so many and lighting the world one day at the time.
