A PIONEER IN BEAUTY AND SKINCARE

Read about the life of any successful leader and one quality you will most probably come across, is confidence. Taking risks, following your gut instinct and breaking new ground are impossible when your mind is plagued with ‘what ifs’. Estée Lauder was not only the head of a giant beauty conglomerate, but also an entrepreneur who invented what has come to be standard practice in most beauty and perfume shops today – the ‘free gift with purchase’ strategy. Estée broke ground in many additional ways, catering products to specific ages and genders, launching various brands that would serve as each other’s best competition, and signing the first ever ‘beauty contract’ with a model. This agreement, made with model, Karen Graham, stipulated that Graham would be featured in all the brand’s campaigns. It transformed Graham into ‘the Estée Lauder Woman’.

FAMILY INSPIRATIONS

Estée, born Josephine Esther Mentzer, was raised in Queens, New York by her Czech father and Hungarian mother. Her interest in beauty blossomed when her uncle came to live with her family and began creating skincare creams, first in the kitchen and then in a stable/ laboratory. Estée was fascinated not only by the texture and fragrance of the products, but also by the technique involved in their application. Alongside her uncle, she launched the Estée Lauder brand in 1946, selling a selection of just four products to nearby salons and hotels. In 1948, the company opened its first counter at the Saks Fifth Avenue store in New York.

A MARKETING GENIUS

To build her brand, Estée prioritised branding – choosing, for instance, a beautiful blue hue for most of her packaging because it would go well with most bathrooms. She also invested heavily in advertising, choosing models who were aspirational yet familiar. Estée paid great attention to detail. For instance, she instructed salespeople to touch consumers and encourage them to test products so they could see the effect of each product on their skin. She was present at the launch of every new counter and store, staying for various days to teach salespeople the correct display and sales techniques.

LAB-OBSESSED

Estée was also known for her passion for research. She was interested not only in learning the potential properties of various compounds, but also in creating new products that could potentially meet new demands. One of her groundbreaking products was called Youth-Dew – an oil that served as both a bath oil and perfume. Through it, she encouraged women to smell beautiful every day, not only on special occasions.

LAUNCHING NEW BRANDS

Estée founded a myriad of brands that would tap into different and slightly overlapping niches. These included Clinique, Origins, and Aramis. Clinique, for instance, was known for its scientific, targeted approach to skin, and for what is now a basic component of any

skincare routine: the three-step process (cleanse, exfoliate, and moisturise). Origins, meanwhile, relied on the power of nature and science to create lines that were free of harmful chemicals and kind to the environment. The brand harnessed the power of unique products like mimosa tree bark from Brazil or silver tip white tea from the Fujian province of China. Aramis, a fragrance founded in 1963, was the first of many products aimed at the male market.

A TRUE EMPIRE

Today, Estée Lauder owns many of beauty’s top brands – including MAC, Bobbi Brown, Jo Malone, Crème de la Mer, Tom Ford, and more. Although Estée passed away at the ripe age of 97, the company continues to thrive under the guiding hand of her son and grandchildren.
