Georgetown’s roots run deep, but the neighborhood has branched out. Today DC’s oldest neighborhood has a bustling and vibrant business district, an active residential community, and one of the region’s most sought-after recreational waterfronts. It’s DC’s playground for shopping, dining, history, fitness and family fun.

M Street / Wisconsin Avenue

Canal & Waterfront District

Book Hill

Georgetown Design District

M Street is recognized as one of the best shopping streets in the country. It frequently serves as the starting point for many visitors, connecting the neighborhood to Foggy Bottom and Downtown DC to the east and Virginia via Key Bridge to the west. The intersection of M and Wisconsin Avenue is the heart of Georgetown, with boutique-lined streets extending in all four directions. Head up Wisconsin Avenue for some of the city’s most unique boutiques and small businesses, or down below M Street to the Georgetown Waterfront.

Independent boutiques, antiques, art galleries, and cafés and restaurants make up the charming area known as Book Hill, located along the 1600 block of Wisconsin Avenue. From Book Hill Park you can take in a panoramic view of Georgetown, the Potomac River, and Virginia beyond.

4

GEORGETOWNDC.COM

South of M Street are two bodies of water, the C&O Canal and the Potomac River. Between those bodies of water are nooks and crannies to explore. Along side streets including Grace Street and Thomas Jefferson, you’ll find some of the best bakeries, coffee and tacos in town, as well as recreational opportunities, architectural gems, and remnants of the neighborhood’s industrial history. Don’t miss Georgetown Waterfront Park for views of the river, and Washington Harbour for 10 restaurants and eateries—plus the area’s largest outdoor ice skating rink in the winter.

Georgetown is home to 30+ design showrooms and stores, from contemporary to traditional home furnishings and décor. Cady’s Alley anchors the Georgetown Design District, with more than 20 home furnishing showrooms, fashion and specialty boutiques nestled in a cluster of historic industrial buildings. Enjoy a pick-me-up at the authentic European bistro, Kafe Leopold, and a sweet treat at District Doughnut.

Before there was Washington, there was Georgetown.

Once a tobacco port town of Maryland, Georgetown predates the nation’s capital by 40 years. You can discover that history at sites such as the Old Stone House, one of the oldest known remaining structures in Washington, DC, built in 1765. Now a National Park, the Old Stone House—closed for renovations until December 2018—commemorates the daily lives of Georgetown’s early residents.

History On Every Corner

History beckons at every turn in Georgetown. The C&O Canal is a National Historical Park with miles of hiking and biking trails. Along the canal and south toward the Potomac River you’ll see artifacts of Georgetown’s early industrial history. Although there is no water in the canal until Fall 2018, it’s for an exciting reason. Georgetown Heritage and the National Park Service are repairing Locks 3 and 4 as part of a multi-year canal restoration, which will also include a new historic canal replica boat and the revitalization of the park. Visit georgetownheritage.org for more. Further north in Georgetown’s residential area are the historic house museums Dumbarton House and Tudor Place, which tell the stories of Georgetown’s prominent early residents. And all along M Street and Wisconsin Avenue, shops, restaurants, and offices bring modern life into the neighborhood’s historic rowhomes. The City Tavern Club on M Street, now a private social club, once hosted guests including Thomas Jefferson, George-

From taking a selfie at one of the most infamous staircases in movie history, to retracing Jackie O’s footsteps or enjoying a performance at one of the country’s oldest jazz clubs, visitors have no shortage of cultural experiences to choose from.

Nightlife

Home to the internationally recognized Blues Alley— the oldest, continuously operated jazz supper club in America—Georgetown also caters to music lovers of every persuasion, with noteworthy Georgetown Piano Bar and nightly folk, rock and jam bands at the friendly Gypsy Sally’s. If you’re looking for a post-dinner drink, sip classic cocktails at Bar à Vin and in the “Proposal Booth” at Martin’s Tavern (where JFK proposed to Jackie), or sample the beer selection at Pizzeria Paradiso Game Room and The Sovereign. For people-watching, head to Café Milano, Bourbon Steak or Fiola Mare, or The Graham and Rosewood Hotel for rooftop relaxation.

Film

It’s Hollywood on the Potomac in Georgetown, a popular filming location for movies including The Exorcist, St. Elmo’s Fire, Wedding Crashers, Minority Report, and—most recently—Wonder Woman 1984. Film buffs needn’t leave Georgetown disappointed if there’s no camera in sight; take a self-guided film sites tour, or catch the newest releases at the AMC Loews Georgetown. Just keep your eyes peeled: Georgetown is a frequent hang-out for celebrities visiting DC.

Galleries

Art is in the eye of the beholder, and there’s plenty to behold in Georgetown. Whether you’re looking for an avant-garde abstract painting or a classic landscape, the neighborhood galleries offer a wide range of styles. A cluster of galleries can be found in Book Hill, as well as sprinkled throughout Georgetown. Visit www.georgetowngalleries.com for more.

Playtime in Georgetown also means ‘me time’ with a well-deserved visit to one of over 50 plush salons and spas. Get the head-to-toe treatment, from massages to facials and lash bars, for a day of pampering that will leave you feeling refreshed and re-energized for even more exploring. Or, bring the salon experience home with a shopping spree through one of the neighborhood’s numerous beauty stores that sell international brands and made-in-DC products alike.

Stay a While

If you want to experience the real Georgetown, you have to make a night of it. Quaint inns and luxury hotels— including Washington’s only five-star hotel—offer luxurious accommodations for visitors looking for an urban oasis in the heart of our nation’s capital.

There is always something happening in Georgetown and many times, it’s free! The BID’s signature annual events—including Georgetown GLOW, Georgetown French Market, Taste of Georgetown, Twilight Shop, Independents Day, Sunset Fitness, and Sunset Cinema—offer a fun and unique way to experience the very best in local food, fashion, arts, entertainment and recreation. Throughout the year, Georgetown businesses also hold their own free events, including trunk shows, gallery openings, and pop-up shops.

Calling all Mesdames et Messieurs! Every April, the ever-popular Georgetown French Market brings over 7,500 attendees to the charming Book Hill neighborhood of Georgetown as it’s transformed into a Parisian-inspired open-air market. More than 35 locally- owned boutiques, cafés, salons and galleries set up tables along Wisconsin Avenue from O Street to Reservoir Road with clothing, jewelry, art, home furnishings and more, up to 75% off. Live music, French fare, face painting, whimsical street performers and more

Taste of Georgetown Eat, drink and play at the Taste of Georgetown, an annual celebration of food, wine, and music that has been one of Washington, DC’s premier neighborhood events for more than 20 years. There’s only one opportunity each year to taste your way through Georgetown in a single afternoon, with more than 60 signature dishes from over 30 of Georgetown’s restaurants, in addition to wine and craft beer pairings, music and family-friendly activities. Sunset on the Waterfront

Georgetown Waterfront Park beckons on a summer night, just as the sun’s going down, with a view of the Kennedy Center to the left and Key Bridge to the right. Few places are more Instagram-worthy, or more perfectly suited for a community event. Georgetown Sunset Fitness in the Park is a free series of outdoor fitness classes, running June-August. Looking for less exercising and more relaxing? Grab a picnic and a blanket and head to Georgetown Sunset Cinema, a free movie series in July and August. Holiday Happenings & Georgetown GLOW

Magical is the only way to describe Georgetown during the holiday season. Festive roof lighting lines the streets, wreaths adorn every lamp post, Santa comes to town for Book Hill’s Winter Wonderland, and small businesses compete in a neighborhood window decorating contest. Throughout December and early January, visitors can also experience the sparkle of the season at Georgetown GLOW, the region’s only curated exhibition of outdoor public light art installations. Set against the historic backdrop of DC’s oldest neighborhood, it’s a whole new way to shine. Established in 2014, the innovative exhibition has quickly become one of the region’s most anticipated holiday spectacles. For every cupcake in Georgetown, there’s an opportunity to walk, jog or bike it off along some of the region’s best trails. The C&O Canal Towpath and Capital Crescent Trails are popular for those heading west, and Rock Creek Park Trail travels north from the waterfront. Water enthusiasts can take to the Potomac River—a paddler’s paradise for kayaking, canoeing or stand-up paddleboarding. The neighborhood is also home to over 20 fitness-related businesses, including athletic stores, yoga studios, and boathouses along the Potomac River. For the perfect combination of film and fitness, run up all 75 of the infamous Exorcist steps at 3600 Prospect St NW.

Picnic in the Park

Georgetown’s commercial district is home to four national parks that comprise 11 acres of parkland. Pack a lunch and set up a picnic in one of the many neighborhood parks, including Georgetown Waterfront Park, with its 10 acres of green space along the Potomac River. Other prime picnic and recreation spots include Montrose Park, Old Stone House’s courtyard, and Volta Park.

Waterfront F un

All year round, Georgetown’s picturesque waterfront is a center of neighborhood entertainment. Kids love running through the fountain at Georgetown Waterfront Park, and The Washington Harbour offers a calendar of events for people of all ages, including live music, a synchronized water fountain show, and an ice skating rink in the winter.
