ALERT!

Sure, D.C. is full of government policy wonks, but we like to get our geek on in other ways, too. The USA Science & Engineering Festival comes to D.C. with over 3,000 different hands-on activities, experiments, and lots of scientists and engineers to talk to – including Bill Nye the Science Guy! Geared towards all ages, this free event on STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) takes place April 26-27 in the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. Bookworms will want to head to Maryland to see 100 best-selling and award-winning authors, poets, and songwriters host panel discussions and book signings at the Gaithersburg Book Festival. Held on May 17 in quaint Olde Towne Gaithersburg, the free festival is one of the nation’s top literary events. Drama geeks looking to discover the next Broadway phenom should check out Source Festival, three weeks of fresh performances that combine the forces of rising talents with established artists. Driven by creativity, collaboration and invention, artists from across the nation present 25 new works, June 6-29.

SEE AND BE OH, SEEN CRAFT Each year the region’s top interior designers renovate a magnificent local home and give tours to benefit the Children’s National Medical Center. This year’s D.C. Design House is a six-bedroom, seven-bath estate in Forest Hills. Built in 1929, the stone house’s 8,000 square feet have been masterfully transformed by 24 designers. Stop by April 13-May 11 to see this year’s dream home. Another popular annual D.C. tradition is the world famous Virginia Gold Cup steeplechase race, one of the largest sporting events in the area. Race day – May 3 in The Plains – features six hurdle and timber horses races, Jack Russell Terrier races, tailgate and hat contests, and vendor booths for shopping. And beautiful people dressed to the nines! The Capital Pride Street Festival celebrates diversity with hundreds of performances from local and national entertainers, politicians, and activists along Pennsylvania Avenue. As D.C.’s largest annual one-day event, it features scores of exhibits, a family area, and many food vendors offering a huge selection of various cuisines. Perhaps the country’s most prestigious juried show and sale of fine American sculptural objects and design, the Smithsonian Craft Show includes over 120 artists offering one-of-a-kind works in 12 different media from furniture and ceramics to glass and wearable art. Held at the National Building Museum, April 10-13. Crafts for sale in 70 boutique booths is just one part of the National Cathedral Flower Mart, which features a little bit of everything spring in this annual event. Floral displays, musical performances, garden tours, children’s entertainment – an antique carousel is a fan favorite – and the chance to climb the 333 steps to the Central Tower of the Washington National Cathedral make this a breathtaking celebration. The Annapolis Arts, Crafts & Wine Festival offers fine arts, handmade crafts, and wine tastings from over 25 Maryland wineries. Held outdoors June 7-8 at the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium with over 200 of the region’s best artists and craftsmen, it features a variety of media including painting, sculpture, ceramics, digital art, mixed media, printmaking, jewelry, fiber art, glass, wood, leather, metal and photography.

Camp David

PERFORMING ARTS Arena Stage

Camp David by Lawrence Wright; Through May 4

Signature Theatre

Sixty miles north of D.C. lies the presidential retreat known as Camp David. For 13 tumultuous days, President Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalynn host Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin and Egyptian President Anwar Sadat in an attempt to create the impossible – peace in the Middle East. The world premiere of Pulitzer Prize-winning author Lawrence Wright’s new play is based on incredibly true events.

Folger Theater Two Gentlemen of Verona by William Shakespeare; April 17 – May 25 New York’s inventive Fiasco Theater has established its reputation for bringing Shakespeare’s most whimsical and timeless tales to the stage. This dizzying romantic adventure is a comedy filled with bandits, mistaken identity, and also the “sourest-natured” dog Crab. Friendships and romances are tested in this tale of two friends who fall in love with the same woman. 26

Threepenny Opera by Bertolt Brecht; April 22 – June 1 London’s gritty underworld where the haves clash with the have-nots features a sneering antihero in the middle of the storm. Brecht’s sharp critique of Capitalism originated the popular songs “The Ballad of Mack the Knife,” “Soloman Song” and “Pirate Jenny.” With its haunting jazz score and biting lyrics, The Threepenny Opera influenced Cabaret and Urinetown. Now, Signature revives the audacious musical that started it all.
