FEATURED EXHIBITIONS Even if you’ve already been to Washington and seen the permanent collections of some of its best museums, make sure to check out the latest, limited-run exhibits. National Portrait Gallery Elaine de Kooning: Portraits
Elaine de Kooning made both abstract and figurative paintings and drawings during the height of Abstract Expressionism in New York City. She sought to capture the “instantaneous illumination” of recognition – qualities that go beyond the physical attributes of a face which make a person recognizable. She is best known for her portrayals of men, and characterized her portraits of John F. Kennedy as “a glimpse” of the president through an accumulation of sketches and finished likenesses. National Gallery of Art Drawing in Silver and Gold: Leonardo to Jasper Johns
The history of metalpoint – drawing with a metal stylus on a specially prepared surface – is presented through 90 drawings from the late Middle Ages to the present. Often regarded as a limited and unforgiving medium, metalpoint is actually capable of a surprising range of effects, as seen in these drawings by Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Rogier van der Weyden, Albrecht Dürer, Rembrandt van Rijn, Jasper Johns, and others. NEW, NOTABLE, NOW The Pub and the People
Thip Khao
(1648 N. Capitol St, NW)
(3462 14th St, NW)
This charming addition to the blossoming Bloomingdale neighborhood features a “pub-fusion” menu that focuses on local brews, burgers, and sandwiches. Rustic décor – tables are comprised of repurposed barn wood – gives this new restaurant a cozy atmosphere. But don’t let the casual presentation fool you; the chef has a background in fine dining, which is evident once you dig in!
Named for the ubiquitous “rice basket” found in Laotian cooking, this family-style restaurant is enjoying a wave of popularity in the District. Its sticky rice is made twice a day and is featured in the popular Naem Khao, or crispy rice salad. With a section of its menu called “Let’s Go to the Jungle”, diners can sample unusual fare such as chicken hearts, fried intestines, and salmon head soup.
China Chilcano (1418 7th St, NW)
The latest endeavor by famed restaurateur Jose Andres, China Chilcano celebrates the diversity of Peruvian cuisine. Dishes are prepared with Peru’s Criollo native style of cooking and the traditional techniques and ingredients of Chinese Chifa and Japanese Nikkei. The Ceviche Nikkei with its soy-cured egg yolk, leche de tigre Nikkei, and furikake is an early favorite at this new restaurant.

Orange Anchor (3050 K St, NW)

For those arriving by more traditional means, you’ll still be “treated like a captain.” The menu has an array of seafood and steak offerings, with champagne oysters and lobster mac and cheese topping the list of recommendations by the locals.
